Greetings from the New Mexico Tech campus in Socorro, NM.
Drove over yesterday after futzing around w/ the the rx group @ the telescope. Talk about a long day.
Spent the first day at the VLA site today working on dismantling our 'new' telescope. Here's the view from the office:
Long day up in the lifts pulling cables out. Possibly too windy for much lift work tomorrow but we'll see. Got to keep this quick the the morning here comes early.
Jeffrey - I thought you had a 'U-boat' on the property
You guys are gonna dig how they move the array around. They've combined radio telescopes and railroads for me Too bad the one we're taking apart for shipment isn't on rails.

Well seems the only bad thing to happen today was a McHenry coupler on the front of an Atlas/Bachmann GP40 broke. That was easily fixed with the installation of a Kadee 119. I received a packet of Kadee 142 couplers today. The project I needed them for was handled in a different way so I have them on hand in case a need for them arises in the future. A railfan caught a crew member, hat in hand posing on a GP40. I have no idea what the L&A's dress code is but it must include T-shirts.Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Wow already the end of April. Just now seeing blooms we would have seen two to three weeks earlier last year. Tired out from work and working on the platform. Sure feels like I'm over building this thing. If it doesn't hold up 200 lbs something is wrong!

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 70s. Did not get home until after 5:30 from conference. Edged sidewalks, moved 4 very small cedars, watered all new and transplanted trees, and picked some violets for the "Saucy Wench". Long day. Long day tomorrow, but at least tomorrow night I get to scrimmage with "my" soccer kids. New groupings for girls gives me hope that my final prayer will be answered this year if "my" soccer girls can win a sectional title. With the boys wining last year and AJ back in the Winner's Circle, the only item left on the bucket list is seeing the girls win. Then I can go home. I hope everyone has a good day.

Brutus, I once was dragging logs with my 8N tractor, (the log was way too big, front end off the ground going DOWN the mountain, but I figured as long as were still pullin) the log went one way and the chain another, and hooked on a tree, and stood that tractor RIGHT up on its rear end. I did the backwards butt shuffle like never before, as I was afraid it was come all the way over on top of me. but it just stood there, wheels a spinning, gas and oil flying every where. so I ran up beside it turned it off, and gave her a push and on our way we went

Jeffrey, I am on a some what restricted diet myself. I guess the trick is learning what bothers you and avoiding it but that is hard to do sometimes. You never know what they put in food at restaurants. I have more problems there than at home. Citrus fruit is pretty hard on me too. I can't take the acid. However, tomatoes don't seem to bother me as much. Less citric acid I guess.

I finished up the repair on the trans cooler lines on the Nissan UD and took it for a test run down the street.
I found out that it needs two headlights replaced so I will do that this afternoon.

Finally hitting the 70's today but with wind and rain involved. I'll take it any way.
My ups package is supposed to arrive on Wednesday! I fill like a kid the day before Christmas. I finished two more platform pieces late last night. Ran out of screws so hopefully tonight I can get the other two wrapped up - at least the frame work that is.

Good morning. It's 62° with 100% humidity and a fair chance of rain. The high will be 82°.Nothing on the schedule today except working on the layout and running trains. I was running the GP40's (Pathmark, L&A) in consist with the H24-66 and U30E645 this morning. Everything went well for a few laps around the layout then I saw the Pathmark loco break away from the L&A GP40 and take up a new career as a runaway! The locos are speed matched so it only pulled away a few inches in ten feet. The other three locos had the weight of the train slowing them down slightly. Of course an investigation into the incident quickly ensued. It was found that the front coupler on the L&A GP40 was a McHenry shelf coupler. The jaw on it had apparently cracked and broken off. This was corrected with the installation of a Kadee 119 shelf coupler. Running after that was uneventful. No more runaways.Got a short video this morning. Just click on the photo.

V8Vega Forecast has our 1st hot weather coming. Thur.95 Fri. 97 Sat. 95I have a sprinkler head right by the sidewalk and it sticks up a little and I see its riser is broken again. I hope its the black soft plastic riser and not the pipe itself as it becomes a big job then. I need to get a shorter sprinkler so its flush with the ground, I guess people kick it or step on it or something as they walk by. I have to put my Border Collie Cooper in the house when I mow the lawn. I'm afraid he will get his paw under the mower deck,a real fear as he thinks the mower is something to attack and he is a nuisance when I'm trying to mow.

Dennis....putting the pup away when you mow the lawn is a good idea for the reasons you state. But you can train your Border Collie to ignore the noises that get it going. This is a common problem.....many folks' dogs with whom we train react differently to different noises.
Up at our training center they use leaf blowers, animated stuffed animals that sing, jump, walk, and play music, remote control cars, drums, they bang on 55 gallon drums, pots and pans, use starter pistols, metal containers with rocks or pennies in them, a vacuum cleaner, they pop bubble wrap, and the list goes on.
The concept is simple: the dog gradually (over time) is desensitized to what sets them off. You have your dog sit or down on leash and keep them there when the noise is introduced and then removed. Then you reward your pup for maintaining the position (quiet praise, food) when they tolerate the distraction. Gradually the noise is prolonged until they tolerate the noise without correction. They may not like the noise--ever--but they have to learn that you will keep them safe from "it" , that they won't be killed or harmed, and that you are the protector.
Re the sprinkler head........you must have hit it with your snowblower out there in the Southern California snows.

Well, 2 days since the grits poisoning, guess I made it this time. It was a close one. 3 days until I get my parole and can fly back home. My wife informed me the lawn is a foot high and threatened to try to drive the mower "just to cut the front yard". I'm sure it will end up down in the woods. I hope she doesn't try it. Of course, she threatens to do all kinds of work around the house, so what am I worried about

Had a busy day today. First mowing the grass and doing laundry then feeding my fathers dogs this evening as he's at work tonight. It looks like I may have a problem with oranges now and I may have to add them to my taboo list along with bananas, cherries, avocados, tomatoes and a few others. In the past few weeks every time after eating an orange I've been hot, shaky and really weak not to mention my sinuses go wild and I sweat profusely. That never happened before until a few weeks ago and it's gotten progressively worse. Tomatoes and avocados will keep me on the throne for hours. Cherries make me quite sick and a banana will require that I be taken to the ER. Looks like oranges are on the way to doing the same thing. I was thinking today that this might be some kind of reaction with the new meds but this started before the new meds were prescribed. My father eats oranges from the same bag and he shows no ill effects. And we've been through several bags. So why would they effect me and not him? Another point to bring up with my doctor.Time to call it a night here. See y'all tomorrow.

Is it just me, or is there something wrong when you can pay over $500 list for a Diesel engine just by itself and yet at the same time buy a complete RTR set for less than $500 with a Diesel powered engine with a lesser array of sounds and other nuances? Personally the most interesting catalog of the 3 was the American Flyer one. TBIL and I can drive. I hope everyone has a good day.
