Hello all

Another day here on the hill. Not much going on for us as this receiver goes in. This group is entertaining to say the least. The 6 hour drive to Socorro tomorrow w/ our esteemed electrical engineer should be quite relaxing in comparison.

RT - sounds like quite the project you have there. Take it slow and you should be fine. Will be a good time to make some improvements to your system w/ regard to outlets, switches, etc.

Kev - worked on a house where the entire house ran off of one 20A fuseSurprise They hooked up a cooler using interior romex, not in conduit, on the roof, in Arizona....

RJ - nice view from up there. My antenna is bigger BTW, but yours is taller...Stick out tongue

Ordered the wheel cylinder yesterday from my friends in Jack's state. Also got a mirror for the right side of the car. Remember when those were optional?

Jack I have the aluminum wiring and in time after last night wife wants me to start replacing it. ( I wanted to about 4 years ago but wife said why Bang Head now she wants it guess if its her idea then its good and 4 years later makes it her idea. )

.......I took my beer cans in this morning and got beer money. $.50 a LB. for the cans.  $29.42 Beer Yes Wink

I tried to do the math on my calculator to determine how many beer cans that would be, but the calculator did not have enough digits.  SurpriseWhistling

Jack

Jack,

I will help you out. Cans, 58# @$.50 = $29.00 1# of Clean sheet Aluminum @$.42 =$.42 = $$29.42. I had some help from the SIL. He had 3 bags of un-crushed and I had a plastic 55Gal drum. Now as for now many cans,,,,,,,,,,,,,A lot Laugh

And BTW I put one crushed can on my postal scale and the weight was 0.7 OZ do the math. Wink a few cans under 830 or 27.6 30 packs. Beer

Jack I have a friend at work who is a license electrician who will check everything I do and he will wire to the meter box from the breaker box. I will have to cut and replace drywall to run a lot of this. At present I have aluminum to copper switches, plugs and use the tube of stuff on the wiring of the lights/ceiling fans in this house and want to add a ceiling fan to the ceiling of the living room.........

RT........I think that is the best way to do it, but I no longer have anyone I know who could recheck my work..  And there is no sense in me burning down my house by DIY to save a few bucks.  The worst would be what the wife had to say about it:  "The fire marshall called, Jack, said the wiring was done incorrectly.  And that was the cause of the fire WHERE WE LOST EVERYTHING!!!!   Wasn't that the area you did yourself?" Whistling

Besides, I would never put my trains at risk. Laugh

A while ago my Internet Explorer quit working and my tenant got me going on Firefox. It seems like it doesn't always cancel a web site I was on and after a few days it gets so loaded up my computer becomes agonizing slow. Turning the computer off helps and may fix it or may only help some. But occasionally I get a message when I first turn on Firefox, I forget exactly what it says but it says its embarrassed that there are too many tabs and do I want to continue to try to connect or to cancel them. It will list web sites some of which I havent been on for a week or more. I click cancel them and then my computer works perfectly. I forget how old my Dell Windows XP is but I'll guess 7 years. What is a tab?

Chief a post or two above said good afternoon, its 10:30 here.

Dennis,
Do a left click on the start button on the bottom left of your screen. Then click on Control Panel in the right column. Then click on Performance and Maintenance. Then click on Rearrange programs on your hard disc to make programs run faster. Then hit Defragment. It will take awhile but do it don’t bother clicking on Analyze just do a defrag. . When your done with the defrag go back into Performance and Maintenance. And do a Free Up Space on your hard disc. A Disc cleanup. It will scan your files and then ask you to remove temp internet files and downloaded internet files. They will have check marks in the boxes on the left. Click Ok. It will then ask you if you are sure click Yes. And let it get rid of all of the junk slowing you computer down.
This should help you out a lot.
If you want to PM me and I will give you my phone number so you can call me and I will walk you through it.
You should do this about once a month if you use the internet a lot.Wink

P.S. I also have a anti-virus software from my internet provider I run once a week with the option to call in and let them take over your PC to repair problems. It cost $4.99 a month,,,, well worth the money. They have saved my PC from the dreaded BLUE screen twice.

Dennis,,,,,,U can do it!!!! Yes

Afternoon.  Busy at home [sort of].  Had to take Grady [neighbor] to get load of water, gas for his pressure washer and bleach.  Then transport all on trailer to the back side of the Main Street Park.  He is pressure washing the big wooden bridge across the creek.  Then I mowed grass.  No for a bite to eat [Southern Fried Chicken in frig].  Going to start shoveling beds in garden.  Set out plants as rain on the way per weatherperson.

Later.

Yeah RT aluminum wiring! A bad idea from the 60s. Replace it asap. Ick!

Jack, In Plainfield was the same as Cook County, all wiring had to be in metal conduit and all plumbing in copper. Out here not so. Romex is okay and that is what this house is done in. You can also use plastic pipe here. I used plastic for the outside faucets and copper for everything else in the house. I do like conduit if you need to pull an extra circuit just pull it through the conduit that is there. I did the shed myself and it is all in exposed metal conduit. Makes for easy additions if power is needed later on someplace else in the shop.

Good morning.

Got that book last night. Started reading it, and so far so good. May have mentioned the title already, but is "A Higher Call", which is about Franz Stigler, a German Ace, and Charlie Brown, a B17 pilot.

Worked hard last night, hence why I hadn't gotten back on.

RT.......in Chicago proper, code mandated all wire, regardless, hadto be run through conduit unless you used BX.  Even Romex had to be in conduit.  All receptacle outlets and light switch boxes, had to be metal, not plastic.  Out here, conduit, BX, and metal boxes are not required.  ROMEX and plastic are OK.  That is how I did my basement with guidance on site from a guy who knew the what and how.  He checked everything I did, as I did it, right down to the wire nuts!  I did not trust myself.  I always wonder what my homeowners' insurance company's position would be if a "faulty wiring job in basement was cause of the fire" was the fire department's final assessent after a house fire here.  If they knew I did it myself.   JACK

Good morning. It's 68°F with 97% humidity. Cloudy, showers possible, high of 82°F.

I think today I'll just sit back and watch some movies. I may clean up the work area on the layout later.

Jack I have the aluminum wiring and in time after last night wife wants me to start replacing it. ( I wanted to about 4 years ago but wife said why Bang Head now she wants it guess if its her idea then its good and 4 years later makes it her idea. )Now I can do all but the main connect to the house. she just won't like me tearing up the walls doing so lol will try to come down from the attic as much as possible. I want to move the panel box anyway from one wall to another as it now is behind the dryer I want it on the wall into the laundry room so there is nothing in your way if you need to get to it.

The fires first one was something at the stove what she did not sure but supposedly the stove was just repaired the day before. the second one they left a electric incense burner plug in and on and left the house (mini crock pot I call them) and guess it either went dry and cracked and caught fire or shorted out some how. Both to me where human mistakes Who knows on the first if she put something on the stove and went to the bathroom or what. I have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and not a tiny one

I had to replace a stove ( gas) that you would turn the oven on and it would lock the door like it was going into clean cycle let a repair person come couldn't find anything I did figure out to get it out of the cycle hit clean then cancel but after doing that trick a couple of times I said enough. Wouldn't do it all the time just about once a month or so. but I would have to check it about 5 minutes into preheat to make sure got tired of doing that.

Talked to Brutus and SJ on the tardis last night didn't accomplish much but good eateries in Nashville, TN.

Well time to see what I can make for breakfast talk to you all later need to work on train table some also

Bright sun and maybe 70s today on the North Bluff Cool

Jeffery,  I am with Ryan, I like that Patchmark the way it is. Nice looking paint job on it.

WOW RJ I freak out on a 7' step ladder. Embarrassed i fine Model Train Stuff has good prices on things too and had good luck with them.  https://www.modeltrainstuff.com/

RT. Are there a lot of houses around you that are not lived in? I would worry about arson if that is the case.

Jack makes some good points about covering your bases on fire safety. Our first house was 70 years old when we got it and had knob & tube wiring with a 60 AMP service done when there were no codes. Surprise I dealt with that right away. Our last two houses we have built so I know they are done right and what they are. Makes for peace of mind. Yes

Good morning all

Going into the 60's today with 70's in the future. Then back to 40's for friday ... what the heck??!!?

Ryan - Sometimes the heights get to me. What I really hate is getting on the residential towers and it sways by 3ft at the top. Lets just say my butt puckers on those.

Chuck - Thanks for the reminder the race is a Saturday race.

Jeffrey - Hope you're feeling better with the new meds and the engines are looking great.

Need to get out and clean out the trailer. I have a couple people headed over to see it and one on hold if they don't take it.

All for now from the thumb of Mi

All shook up tonight monday befor last house burnt tonight the house across the street burnt. Don't know how much more of this I can stand niether of these houses are more than 80 feet from mine. Sad

RT.......the fear of a house fire is something we all share, though we (I do anyway) tend to keep that thought inside. .  Having two such fires within yards of your house is very unsettling.  Hopefully Rich and other former firefighters can weigh in here from a professional perspective.  And your local fire department may be willing to share the cause of the two house fires so close to yours.  .

After I read your post I decided to do some reading for a refresher course......so I could check or recheck some things.  Statistics about the rank order of house fires.  I tend to spend more time thinking about something rather than doing something about it.  Doing something settles my mind, makes me both feel more in control and know I have (some of) the largest risks covered.  When it comes to a house fire, assumptions are a dangerous thing.

Heat sources top the list (no surprise),  kitchen fires sit on top of the stack.  Furnace is #2. http://www.readersdigest.ca/home-garden/cleaning/top-10-causes-house-fires?id=1

In my house, I have my furnace serviced and cleaned at least once a year.  I check my dryer venting twice a year.  And I keep harassing household members about cleaning out the filter/screen on the dryer..

A year ago I replaced an electronic eight year old Sears/Kenmore electric oven/range whose electronics went bonkers with no apparent precipitating cause, we were not using the oven---the oven flipped onto high and would not shut down using the buttons, like the controls were stuck on full-on, like it was on the "clean" option.  I flipped off the 220 breaker and then unplugged it.  When I reversed the process after 30 minutes (and the oven had cooled down), the oven repeated the "mind of it's own."  I immediately googled "Kenmore electric oven malfunctions" and I got an more unsettling news.  Others with electronic (controls) ranges (Kenmore and other brands/models) had experienced the same berserkness.  AND a service call by a qualified service technician by some only alleviated the problem temporarily!!!!  It repeated itself.  Those affected brands covered their units under warranty, but who takes out a warranty extension on an oven/range.  Needless to say, that range was quickly history.

I think you once posted that your house wiring was ancient with aluminum wiring.  Or was that Jim/Brutus?  And how many of us don't have enough wall sockets where we need them, with inadequate amperage, and overload the circuits we have?

Grab some piece of mind.  Check some things and know you have the bases covered.  That is what I am going to do today.

Jack.

Jeffery, just a thought, I would leave the paint on the Pathmark "as-is"   its just different, in a good way

My thinking exactly. If anything I'll just brush off any flaked up super glue left over from installing the railings and cut levers. I looked on Ebay for another one like it and came up empty.

good morning

RJ thats ALL you buddy,,,,,,, you wont see me up there.  Now I see why the roof job with all the crazy ladder configuring wasn't really a big deal for you.

Jeffery, just a thought, I would leave the paint on the Pathmark "as-is"   its just different, in a good way

KEV, good deal on the pt job.   we have a few companies that do that around here, but from talking to people I know that have worked for them, its not such a good deal, IE the one company has a policy, that if the vehicle your driving breaks down, you dont get paid for the run. and you may sit all day waiting for them to come get you.  now keep in mind most of this is runs of really used hard cars going from and to auction houses.

gotta run

RJ just what type of work do you do that entails getting in that type of situation?

I work for a company in the thumb of Michigan that has phone land line service, cellular service, dsl, and fixed wireless internet. I work in the area of wireless internet. usually I handle the equipment at the towers. Unfortunately the way things have worked out this past year we have no installers/service men. So I now wear three hats. I still handle tower equipment. I do the installs and service calls. Plus In the last couple years I have been trained in a proping software that gives us results of new builds before we do them.

Here are some shots of me on a 120 ft mono pole.

R.j.   (charliebrown)...  I have bought a few things from T & K and have been satisfied with the prices and service.  I visited their store and was impressed.

Chuck

I watched a video they had on youtube of their layout. It is quite big. I found them through a search and they have the best price on the track I want. The other items are about the same.

I hadn't intended on putting much into the Pathmark GP40 today. Well I guess it wasn't all that much, just stuff I had laying around. Both short hood handrails were fixed, the rear handrail was fixed. The front handrail and both handrails along the long hood were replaced. The stock couplers were replaced with Kadees. The old Bachmann train set drive was replaced with a new Bachmann GP38 drive with all-wheel pickup and drive and DCC. I then added coupler cut levers then started looking around for air and mu lines but then decided it was time to stick a fork in it. It was done. It's not a bad accomplishment for a day of goofing off. I still need to find a horn for it.

Here's a couple of photos I took a few minutes ago.

Time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

If the paint is bubbling, the steel underneath will be weakened.  If it is isolated to one area, I'd find a shop that could cut out the affected steel and patch it.  Too many shops just knock it down and pile on filler.

I attempted to repair the LH rocker on the 97 Probe, and it looked good for a while.  After some time, that rust came right back.  With 200K+ on it, I am not that concerned right now.  I don't want to see how it look under the side skirt thoughIck!

That's why I sent that other Probe to the crusher.  Once rust gets so far in, it becomes much more than just a cosmetic issue.
