Good morning. It's 77° and mostly cloudy. There's a slight chance of rain this morning. The high will be 95° (feel like 107°) with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Nothing scheduled for today except rest.

Back to work today - can't sluff off on that since the SS ranks are now larger.

Another triple digit day.  My dashboard thermometer in my black car with a black interior parked in a black parking lot read 113 when I started the car for my trip home this afternoon.  Read a108 when I pulled in my driveway.  The weather guesser is saying that it will cool off next week - only going to be in the low 90's.

KRM - I've taken more pictures and am planning on putting a 'how I did it' type post on the forum when I get it completed.  If you have questions, send me a PM.

It's 85 now.

We got a little rain around noon but not much, it did keep us cloudy till late afternoon so we didn't hit the 100 mark. Sat outside till dark. Went to the train store today, got my Atlas 2 bay hopper. No supper but we had banilla with chocolate syrup and peanuts.. Waiting for the Tardis..S.J.

Good evening all, got root canal done this morning.  In chair for over two hours.  Parking in the area is only for two hours so the dentist let me go out and move my car in the middle of everything.  Got temporary filling and need to go back for permanent one in two weeks.

Friends coming over tonight for trains.  Should cool off out there by the time we meet.  Higher temps predicted for next week so this may be the last one for a while.

Tree guy lined up for Saturday to take out my trees in the way of new fence.

#2 son going to visit a friend in Oregon tomorrow so we will have the place to ourselves until next week.

Prayers for Chief's friend, Judy.

Chinese take out for dinner tonight.

later,

Ray

Good evening everyone.  Was a nice day, got done early, then worked out at the gym.  Feels good, but sure to pay for it tomorrow.  Will have to get to sleep early as I have a case first thing in the morning.  Chief, looking forward to seeing the "plywood prairie "come to life.  Sounds like you have busy enough for all of us!  Good luck, and I will pray for your friend's wife.

Jack, right now, we are looking at the August to September time frame.  We should have about 7-10 days notice before we leave.  I say should as last time, we were called  at 4:30 Thursday afternoon and told to be in Beijing Saturday morning.  That was crunch time!  I may email privately at the time of departure as I would wait till we were on our way back to keep from advertising our absence at the homestead.  We may have someone stay here and that would make things easier.  Regarding being anxious, yeah...big time!  One of the anesthesiologists on our team has a best friend from med school who is a missionary in China.  He has seen our son!  Out of the many people in China, he has seen our child....

Gotta run.

God bless,

Dennis

Spent most of my day in Alexandria today. Got my mother to her eye appointment so she could have her tests done. Afterward we went to an Italian place, Corrino's I think it's called for lunch. Went by the LHS and picked up an Athearn 52' mill gondola with a load included. Also got a pack of Bachmann street signs and traffic lights. Picked it all up for half price.

Now I'm tired and sore and just want to rest.

What a day.  Had to put together a outdoor patio set and move one.  Fix an outdoor umbrella.  Then hit the Box.  Built the big gorge.  All benchwork done.  Now to build 4 lift bridges.  Shake and Bake sent me photos of the special hinges he uses.  Will have to track them down.  Went to Edna's and got all of her 30" track and some more shorts.  She is getting more in tomorrow.  Got 75% of the switching yard done and the two switcher storage tracks.  Really looking complete.

Off to the lake house unless the "wind changes" again [Wifey thing Wink].  Back tomorrow.  Wifey may stay.

You all remember me telling you about guy named Joe who reads this forum, goes to church with us and lives here and his wife has cancer.  Saw here today at Harddes at breakfast.  She is holding her own.  Please pray for Judy.

Chat later.

BTW: rained all around us and none in Roseyvlle so far.

Chief........the Wreck Tangle is really coming along.  Thank you for the pictures!!!!  I had to laugh at your wife's observation that there was no room for moving around and your response was "This isn't a dance floor!!!" Laugh  Whatever happened to the layout moniker "plywood prarie?"

V8........when you try to comfort your dog during the fireworks, you just might be reinforcing the behavior you are trying to eliminate, the nervousness and pacing.  That is what our dog trainer advises.  Better to ignore the dog, act like there is nothing to be concerned with, and/or mask the noise by turning up the volume on the TV or music.

Dennis.......what do you estimate is the lead time now on your departure for China?  You and your wife must be beyond anxious!  Hang in there. Angel

Jack I just looked and 103 here and climbing, Too hot to be outside.

Doug, I see they found a automobile under the coal. But they have not said if anyone is in it. Dead

Pat, have you ever seen a Northern Tools catalog? They have PTO units in there also you can go to their web site to look as well.

13,000 Watt gen is $1,400 That is a lot of power, 2- 20amp 120V outlets 1- 30amp 120V outlet and 1 50amp 220v . It needs only 24 HP at the PTO You have the tractor and PTO shaft already. They also have a 7,000 watt set for $999.00 It will do 30amp on 220v. It needs 14 HP at the PTO. John Deere also sells them but they would be three times as much.  Smile, Wink & Grin Most farm stores have them too.

Aloha. Paradise, Continued hot here: 101 about now.  Kev, that derailment in Glenview was at the end of a long coal train. The overpass collapsed after some cars derailed and everything fell into a spectacular heap. Now, they're looking to see if there's a car under everything. Surprise.

DougM and KEV.....my FIL in Elgin IL. says it's 103.3 by him right now with the temps still trending upward!!!  Four straight days of 100+ and the warmest Summer since 1934!!!!!  Elgin is going to buy power from Commonwealth Edison for the next two years and resell it to its own residents.  Will be interesting what that will do to pressure the prices downward.

BTW........my oldest sister lives in Glenview IL. and was right down the street from the derailment yesterday getting gas when the police cars came flying down the road, responding to the wreck !!!!

Re generators, I understand both sides of the generator cost or the cost/benefit discussion.  Once upon a time "we" didn't have refrigerators and air conditioners!!!!!!  My wife and I have been very fortunate in that over the past quarter century (ice storms, hurricanes) we have never lost power for more than 5-6 hours at a time, usually for less than an hour, and that was twice.  Had the beer temperature ever been in jeopardy, I'd need one!!!! Pat , you need approximately 2 PTO horsepower per 1000 watts (1kw) Then wire it in with a manual transfer switch. Most dairy farms have one. They are in remote locations and it's hard to milk cows by hand.

Banks - Thanks for the information. I did not know you could run a generator off a tractor PTO. Great idea. I will definitely look into that. I need a bigger unit than 4500 watt but less than 100Kw. I do have the tractor for it.

Happy July 5th Youse Guyz!!!!!!

We had a fantastic July 4th, exciting too.  I went out at 7am with grocery list in hand expecting a throng of about 15 at my place for an allafternoon/evening cookout.  So I did what I always do and bought way too much of everything.

Then the "regrets" phone calls commenced due to a variety of medical issues, old and young.  Didn't bother me because if I were in the same boat I would have stayed close to the ranch myself.  Nine out of 15 showed up for the first round.  BUT......the no shows did not remain no shows, called to re-enlist, and we still hit the max number of expected partygoers for the second fire-up of the grill about 5pm.  My menu included 5 different salads, meats (burgers, dogs, Italian sausages, marinated steak tips, and two flavors of buffalo chicken wings and drumsticks),  Heineken on tap.  Banilla with 3 toppings for dessert, plus fresh sliced strawberries and whipped cream, self serve.

The weather was cooperative early on, but it was like a veritable, unpleasant sauna outdoors.  The attending kiddies (including my grandchildren) found the pool replacement (slip and slides) quite adequate and stopped playing only to eat and visit the facilities.  The last of the guests pulled out about 8pm and the wifey and I went into cleanup mode.

Thirty minutes later things got really  interesting......a severe weather front approached from due North and moved through Eastern Taxachusetts.  The thunder and lightening show with the center about ten miles to my West provided some spectacular natural fireworks from our back yard.  Then we were driven inside by the winds and rain.

About twenty minutes later, the half million or so folks that had ventured into Boston and the Esplanade on the Charles River for the annual July 4th Boston Pops performance and fireworks had to be evacuated because of the same impending lightening threat!!!!!  The powers that be in Boston had a zillion folks booking it for whatever cover was available outside of the Esplanade while a time-out for the show was called.  No serious issues, the throngs returned from hiding after the storm had passed, and the show went on.

The wife and I meanwhile had a front row seat for the show and the fireworks from the safety and comfort of our family room while we grazed on leftovers and more banilla!!. Thumbs UpSmile, Wink & GrinDinner

Later, gang!!!!

Happy Thursday CTTFans!

Lisa and I got the heck out of town for the 4th and got in some RRAdventures time plus did some other stuff in and around 11,000-12,000 altitude range.  When we drove back into town the city was in a haze from smoke so we jumped to see what the news was and to our surprise it was smoke coming in from Wyoming from their fires.  Seems like the entire Front Range is burning these days; but, at least for Colorado fires are slowly coming under control...

Well, it's official, JUNE was the HOTTEST is Record History here and we have been above 95F for nearly two weeks straight.  They say some serious RAIN is coming in by the weekend - YIPPEE!!!!!!!; but, that too can be bad news for mudslides in the burn areas and could cause damage to the Colorado Spring water supply...

Hope to have my Travel Blog updated by the weekend from yesterday's travels so stay tune for that...

Lunch Time:

90's today going past 100 by Friday.

We had a great 4th of July. 2 parades with the Fire Company and a BBQ with my brother in law Dan and our kids, as our wives worked the ice cream shop. We know that our brother in law Ray, AF53 has tickets for a number of games, but when we were watching the Yanks play the  Tampa Rays, we did not know that he had a web site: RAYSBASEBALL.COM Whistling When his 2 sisters came in during the 7th inning and we told them about the website, they asked us how much beer we drank. Beer Laugh

AF53, Ray, Derek Jetter called and wanted to know why you drive a Chevy suburban and not the Yankee edition Ford Escape! Whistling

Hello all,

Glad every one had a good fourth. Ours went well with one exception One fellow in the local development gets a permit every year and does a great display.  While watching we see another guy release what looked like a garbage bag with a candle. This really got my attention because of the fire danger. There are many acres of fields and woods in the area that are ready to burn. Even the cornfield was ready to ignite before we got 0.4 inches of rain overnight the 3rd. After several more were released I couldn't contain myself and went to register my concerns. He didn't seem to care at all if he started a fire somewhere. I did learn what he was releasing were "Chinese Lanterns" or "Sky Lanterns". I did some online research this morning. It seems they are the latest fad. In addition to the fire danger the wire frame is hazardous to live stock and farm equipment. Some are working to have them banned. I'm looking in to helping them.

BOC & Colorado Fire victims  Angel

It's official. I have asthma. I just returned from a visit to the Lung Specialist. I failed the Methocoline Challenge. At least I know why I get out of breath so easily. Gave me a scrip and 30 days worth of samples of Alvesco

Busy as he**!!!!!!!  Baled  over 15 ton of hay in the past week or so. Mostly round bales but also 500 square bales.

Concerning backup power. Pat if you have a tractor why not look into a PTO driven alternator. You'll have one less engine to maintain. I have a 4500 watt unit that I connect to a Gravely garden tractor. It is big enough to run the minimal amount of stuff to keep us warm, fed and clean if necessary. It hasn't been out of the garage in years but the tractor is run on a regular basis so I know it will run. My uncle used to have a 100kw PTO unit on his farm. It ran for more than a week one time. Only shutting down the tractor to add fuel and check the oil.

Kev,  I think it might be time to look for a new Doctor.

SS fund is calling

Prayers for those in need

Good morning all, hope you all had a good 4th.  Getting ready to go for my root canal this morning. Oh joy!  The neighbor in my rear and I came to an agreement about the new fence and removing my tall cypress trees on the fence line.  He will pay half the cost of the tree removal but I hate like the devil to lose them.  However, technically they are encroaching on his property but the main reason is that the roots might damage a block wall.  The tree removal is scheduled for Saturday.  The neighbor is still trying to coordinate with the fence guy.  Big problem with it is there is an old cement footing some amature poured years ago but never put up a wall.  This has to be jack hammered out and redone because it is lumpy and uneven.  When everything is done, I will have to plant something new to green up the back yard again.  Meanwhile it will probably look like a desert.

D. Baker, good to hear from you again.  Be careful with that finger at work.

Some of my lights on the layout went out.  Have to try and trace where the break in the wires is.  That could be a nightmare since nothing was coded etc.  Might be easier to just rewire the whole thing.

V8 Dennis, we live just a short way from the town of Azusa to the West of us where some types of fireworks are legal.  However, the illegal ones are plentiful over there.  It sounded like WW 3 over there last night.  Don't know how my neighbors three Collies fared yet.  Fireworks is illegal in our town.

Chief, et al, check out the photos on the internet of the NS heritage units at Spencer, N.C.  Awsome!

later,

Ray

Hi GUYZ,

Hope all of YUZ GUYZ had a safe 4th of July.  I finally got my fence done yesterday.  Then at about 4 took my MINNIE and Wife for a nice run.  It was 90+ in the woods but a nice breeze was with us, so not to bad.  After run was done me and MINNIE jumped in the creek to cool off.  REFRESHING!!!  Also had my bath for the week.

Getting to 95+ today so not going to push outside activites.  Got all the chores and workouts done this morning so today might be a goof off day, ala SIR JAMES, I think he invented it?

PAT, WOW 2500 for a generator?  Ouch.  I was thinking of picking one up at Cabelas on sale now for 800 bucks.

CHIEF, Da WRECK TANGLE looks GOOD.  If you need track or the switches you can call BARRYs Direct at 717 367-4745 and tell him I sent you.  Or call me and I'll talk to him for you.

saty frosty,

8ntruck

Hid Worked in my basement workshop this afternoon on my dual motor 200 series Alco 'B' unit project.  Got the frame ready to be spliced together.  I'm taking pictures along the way and will post them when it is more or less together.

Good morning all,

8n I would be very interested in your B unit with dual motors. I would like to do the same to one of my 218 ALCO B dummy units. As of now the 218 is shy of tractive power to pull my 7 car Blue strip passenger set with the dummy B unit.  Huh?

Sounds like a good project. Yes

Going to be in the 100s again today. YUCK, YUCK.

Just got back from the DR. because I have a sore throat sinus thing starting so I thought I should be proactive and get some meds. My Dr. was not in today as usual so I got to see some nurse practitioner. As it turns out she told me to come back in 10 days because they don’t give out antibiotics anymore till you’re on the brink of death or something along those lines. Dead  Most times I go it feels as if my doctor is just a general contractor anyway because he always just sends you to see someone else and gets his cut. Super Angry

I have been doing the sinus drill for 45+ years and I know when it is starting and if I jump on the meds I can stop it before it knocks me down. So I will be sick in about 3 days to where I will not be able to eat or swallow but what choice do I have?? SoapBox Angry

Prayers for all in need. Have a great day and stay cool.

It's going to 99 today, 102 yesterday. A couple of small storms has brought us some more needed rain. We spent yesterday afternoon with the kids, good food and the guys gave us a great fireworks display. I will be heading out to the train store soon, Got an Atlas 2 bay hopper waiting for me...S.J.
