Laz, those carp are very nasty - and getting closer to Lake Michigan. Too bad they're not good eating.

Doug, maybe they will be eatible eventually.  Pollack and Talapia didn't used to be too desireable.  Now they seem to be on everybody's menu.  Same goes for Shark.  Now that is a high priced item.  We used to bury them in the garden for fertilizer.  I guess it's all about supply and demand.  BTW did you see those big fish jumping in the boat on "Swamp People" alligator hunters?  They used them for alligator bait.

Hello all

Settling in on another long night on the mountain. Got down below 10 deg F last night. Should be warmer tonight.

Don - hope the job works out! Looks like fun!

Jack - I'm w/ you on cell phone technology. For a long time I thought it ironic that I run the world's most accurate radio telescope, but didn't have a cell phone. I like technology that replaces older technology, not just something else to spend money on. Since we don't get cell coverage up here, I stuck w/ a land line for many years. Finally was convinced by some friends last summer that a cell phone would be useful. Did some research and found Cricket my best bet. Unlimited voice and text for a price that is a bit less than what the land line cost. I have about a 5 yr old phone that is a basic flip phone that Cricket was able to flash w/ their programming. And no contract either.

Looks like the landlords are going to put AC and real heat in the house next week. They were going to try and start next Tuesday, but I told them I wanted to be there. So prob next Thursday instead. No more rusting of the train tracks w/ the swamp coolerBig Smile

DougM,

DKY (Don’t Kid Yourself) those carp are in Lake Michigan already.

That is where the Jones boys got their harvest.

They swam right up the Mississippi, then the Illinois River here from down by Jeff’s places.

Just another rebel invasion.

Rain/sleet mix this morning.  Patches of blue sky when I left work for home.

New Hot Rod magazine came in the mail today.  Interesting editorial and article on NASCAR.

The Kansas City public TV station aired a Celtic Thunder special tonight.  Turns out it was the show that we went to see last fall.  I'm 99% certain my wife and I are in several of the audiance shots, though we'd need to collect some 'screen shots' to be sure.

All for now.

Good Morning,

TGIF. Tomorrow we are heading to Arlington, Va., for my nephew's wedding reception. He works for the State Dept. and he married a nice girl from Thailand. My Brother and Sister in law are having a recption for them before he is out of the country again. We met her at Christmas and her family is joining us there. This should be a fun time.

Don the best of luck with the engineer's position.

I missed everyone on the Tardis last night. I guess that I was a bit early.

Everyone have a Great Day,

Good Mornin' Y'all From Still-Springlike Taxachusetts,

About 40 here right now, 12 lower than yesterday at this time.  Yesterday's 69 was an all time record high for a March 8 by 3 degrees.  Glorious day outdoors, albeit windy.  Back to reality, will press 50 today with possible snow dusting in the forecast for tomorrow some time.

Brutus.........it sounds like you and Char have turned the corner with the crud.  Good news.  So have I. Thumbs Up

KEV........re the Asian carp infiltrating Lake Michigan.  With all of the direction flow of the proximate Chicagoland rivers and tributaries, plus the locks, one wonders how the carp could possibly infiltrate Lake Michigan.  Fish eggs on the bottom of boats?

A few decades ago (3-4) Lake Michigan was overrun with alewives in similar fashion.  A non-indiginous species making its way where it doesn't belong with no existing predators.  In this case, the alewives were able to make the transition from salt to fresh water and made their way (eggs?) via the St Laurence Seaway through locks, etc., into Lake Michigan.  Ultimately they began propagating and dieing by the zillions but repropagating so badly that the Chicago beaches were frequently closed from massive carcass washup on the shores, so bad it became that they had to use bulldozers and dumptrucks at times to scrape the beaches clean of them and then haul away in trucks to dump somewhere on land or sell for use in fertilizer.  The stench and appearance of dead fish can really put the damper on the ambience of a lakefront.

Chicago's water supply was also challenged as the sheer numbers of these suckers clogged the water intakes for the Chicago water filtration plant, the sole source of all clean/treated fresh water for the entire metro area and beyond.  Engineers had a fun time with a filtration workaround and countermeasures.  Long term solution: introduce a predator into the lake, coho salmon.  That did the trick, but it took time for the predator population of salmon to grow and turn the tide. Dinner

DonB........can't wait for pics of you mowing down tourists at Knotts. Smile, Wink & Grin  I have not been there since the mid 1970s when I was a single and young travelling  businessperson with time to kill on a weekend stayover.  I remember zero of the Knotts trains, probably because my eyes and my mind were otherwise engaged with the female that took me there.  Laugh

Chief........it occured to me that your arsenel has been growing at an alarming rate and may soon be adequate to arm an entire Reb militia.  Could another invasion North of the MD line be far off?  "General Chief' sounds kind of redundant. Whistling

Blownout........have not said this before, but I have been enjoying the pics you post of the old drag cars. Models of all manner of cars were an integral part of my youth!!!   Chuck Barris customs and Hot Rod magazine.  DougM is too young to recall the radio screaming "Sunday at beautiful U.S 30 dragstrip, drag racing capitol of Chicagoland!!!!!!"

Thank you to all for your responses to my cell phone conundrum which many of us share and ponder.  I thought many might be at a crossroads like myself.  As a pencilhead businessperson, and now a person in my 60s trying to reduce frivolous and unnecessary overhead.

First by my Dad and then through my business training/experience I have been directed to look at three sides of the coin: to make and/or keep money you have to earn it/sell it profitably (increase income), save it (lower expenses), or both.  Convenience/wants versus needs versus absolute necessity.  Many solid ideas were shared.

Pay as you go bare bones so you have no flat monthly expense draining your wallet whether you use it or not.  Switching to a second or third tier, lower cost carrier.  Why do we need a landline phone if we have the bases covered with cellular phones?  In the event of an emergency near home or away from home, like when I am out on a roadtrip with family and my car totally dies at midnight in the middle of Winter in the middle of nowhere (yup, that happened more than once).  Or participating in the dragnet, looking for my supposed MIA granddaughter two weeks ago.  Or sitting in a hospital waiting room furiously trying to contact a friend's family while he just slipped into a coma (my buddy in January).  Or simply trying to cover the bases grocery shopping when the wife insists I pick up X, Y, and Z, tells me to not come home without it,  and the store doesn't have any of it (weekly occurence for me).

Finally, each of us has to determine the value of the peace of mind, knowing the communications are there no matter what occurs, where it occurs, or when it occurs.  For me, I won't go without; but I won't get sucked into more than I need.  And right now I am drawing the line at the edge of smart phone: texting; apps and features I don't want/need or duplicate;  internet connectivity via phone (emails);  music and video from my phone; and the list goes on.

Later, gang.

Jack

RI Jack cell phones are a good travel companion BUT in the middle of nowhere you probably won't get a signal. As for land lines they will probably be gone someday but the reception is better and no dropped calls.

I have a cell phone. they offered one year service pay as you so I bought 60 minutes back in oct. I still have 34 minutes would have more if wife would stop calling me about once a week to tell me a nieghbor scratch there nose. Bang Head

I bought mine for emergencey use only ( was the plan) when time runs out on this I will keep it as you don't need service contract to call 911. and that will be how I plan to use this phone. Emergencies I really don't care for cell phones as a whole.

SJ........you are right on the money with the signal thing.  Why I have never switched from Verizon during the past 16+ years even though it was never one of the lower cost carriers.  I could get signal early on (and until today) when/where my Sprint and ATT friends could/can not.  Arguably, 80% fewer dropped calls as well.  Living in a relatively more densely populated area like I do has its advantages, plenty of cell towers.

However, when we went camping in Vermont, with grandkiddies and Maximus the dog, I had signal when my daughter and SIL did not with Sprint.  Before we left home I had looked up and placed in my speed dial three emrgency numbers: the VT.  "local" police, closest hospital, and closest emergency vet.  Fortunately, didn't have to use them.

For years a buddy could not even use his ATT in his home, or on the main road near his home (hills) but mine worked fine, drove him nuts (ATT coverage weak/dead zone or the phone reception iteself?).  Same at my daughter and SIL's home to this day.  Laugh  While the latter are getting a great $ deal, better than me, their devices don't work (or work as well) where they need and use it a lot.

RT..........my wife likes to add to the honey do/get list when I am out doing her bidding at the stores.  I have to carry an analog pen with me and add to the list. Bang Head  Saves me from being sent back out a second time.

Mornin Guys

Bright sun and 40 degrees right now already better than the weather guesser predicted.

Wifey’s birthday today, Not sure what we will do tonight. I have a lot of stuff on my mind and things to do, talk through and decide in the next week. Big life changes coming for us for awhile. Not sure what to make of it but we have been there before. Goes to the old line be careful what you wish for.

Just got in from a walk over to the neighbors for a chat. He just got back from a trip where it is summer all year long. Sounds like he had a lot of fun.

RI Jack

, "KEV........re the Asian carp infiltrating Lake Michigan. With all of the direction flow of the proximate Chicagoland rivers and tributaries, plus the locks, one wonders how the carp could possibly infiltrate Lake Michigan. Fish eggs on the bottom of boats?

"

I remember the alewives situation they had years ago. That one was bad too.

The DNR has installed several locations in the canals leading to Chicago with an electric grid to kill the carp on their way up river. Problem is carp is not all it kills and it goes down a lot. There are many who believe that the Asian carp are already there. I have not seen any on the river here but some of the people I know that spend more time on the river have. As for eating them it is already becoming a specialty at Asian restaurants in the city.

Blownout, I have always been a big fan of Crosleys. Nice picture.

Chuck, you got my attention. Always have to beware of UPDATES.

Cell Phones, I have Sprint, they suck, but phones for wifey and I are $63.00 a month so I guess it is okay. I don’t like them but they are a holdover from when I worked. And like Jack said it is about peace of mind. I remember when I was working on assignment in Georgia and my daughter totaled her car late one night and was in the ER. The wife called my cell at 5:00 AM and I was home by 1:00 PM that same day thanks in part to the ability to communicate by cell phone with the people I needed to, to get home.

Chief, you should have dyed the pond green for St. Patrick’s day next weekend.

Well I have gone on too long,

Y’all have a good Friday, March 09, 2012 Later,

Kev.

Good morning. It's 48° and wet. The high will be 55°, mostly cloudy and wet. Chance of rain 50%. NE wind 15 to 20 mph gusting to 30.

Nothing planned for today. Didn't get much sleep due to storms. I'll be trying to rectify that today.

Lunch Time,

Everything is pretty quiet today. Just the regular work.

Banks, coal in the basement brings me back To my youth. My Grandfather had it and us kids thought it was great playing with it, until Mom did not like us getting filthy.

Bownout Cyl., Enjoying the drag pics. I spent a lot of time at Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ. That Crosley would not pass tech inspection now. We did grow up at the right time.

Hark the Herald Angels Shout, 3 more Hours and I am OUT!!!

Enjoy the weekend,

John:  I remember hearing the commercials for that on a certain radio station waaaaay back when...much like the same type we had for the St Thomas Dragway from CHLO as well here. St Thomas was almost closed down at one point when some people moved into the area and protested the 'noise' that eminated from there...the complaints were shut down pretty quick....Whistling Somewhere in my mess of photoboxes here I still have pix of my old Mustang I had...429CJ with a medium rise intake with a couple of 4 bbl carbs....raced that at Cayuga and St Thomas....

As for cellphone usage..weeeelllllWhistling ...I use mine a fair bit...I also have a few music apps in it so that I can note down any music ideas that might come crawling through my beleaguered beakus...also an amplifier simulation program that I got for my birthday awhile back...so that I could play without interrupting SWMBO....WhistlingMischiefLaugh
