Evening all,

Buckeye: Happy Birthday! Cake Cake Cake

Reading turned out to be pretty good. I stayed at the show for the whole day and got an hour and a half running time in. I met up with a few friends out there and we just looked at the other layouts. One HO layout, belonging to the Reading Railroad Technical and Historical Society, was one of the best modular layouts I have ever seen. The signals are completely computer controlled and the members each wear 2 way radios so the dispatcher can contact them to give directions on what to do and what signal they will be approaching. The detailing is pretty incredible too. It had me thinking of getting back into HO again. With this steady flow of income, it may be happening soon enough! I'd also like to get back into O Gauge too, but the only issue is room as my dads home office is in the basement. Besides, if I move out in a few years I'll have to find a location where my layout would be able to be set up again.

After the show I sat at Wyomissing Junction on the NS Harrisburg Line. I only saw two trains, an empty coal train, NS 507 which was headed by a Dash 9 - Dash 8 (SC) and another Dash 9. Close behind was 15T with a GMTX (former Oakway Leasing) SD60 on point with an NS Dash 8 (SC) sandwiched in the middle of another NS SD60. 15T is a huge manifest and we overheard chatter from the engineer that he was losing air pressure in the brake hoses rather quickly. The usual PSI is around 70 and his dropped to 61 PSI in just a few minutes. The train came to a halt and the conductor had to walk the length of the train. The train was so long that it blocked the interlocking and prevented any westbounds or eastbounds from traveling along the line. I went to another location and came back an hour later and it was still sitting there. I left Reading around 830 after I had dinner with a few friends and it had finally left. Apparently, 15T had more bad luck tonight in the form of a broken coupler.

I ended up painting some more today and I'm headed to the city tomorrow to take some measurements for shelving that we have been asked to install in a food market. Tuesday I'm doing touch-up paint in one house and then we are beginning a few other jobs later in the week.

I'm grabbing dinner (finally) and then headed to bed after I read some more of the book I just got.

Night guys.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 40s.  We had a good family gathering.  Daughter loved the Coca-Cola train.  Fifedog, get used to it.  It will be all Danica all the time.  Would not be surprised if she gets punted into the cheap seats if the focus the entire season is on her.  The difference between Indycar and NASCAR as far as the media attention is concerned is that the other Indycar drivers never attracted that much attention before she showed up.  JJ, Tony, Jeff, Little E and the Busch boys are all used to being the center of attention after winning their races and championships.  "Princess Sparkle Pony" has done nothing of the sort, and I believe there could be some serious resentment.  I had cinnamon roles on the dining car for breakfast.  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Happy Real Birthday, Frank!  Cheers!

Slow day in Saint Louis - my son went to a friend's birthday party, then brought him home to hang out here.  They are going to sleep over, then meet up with some other friends tomorrow at the Mall.  I sat down this afternoon to watch a movie and promptly reclinerized!!!!  I woke up and started the movie over - GAMERA: Guardian of the Universe.  It was really good and had some model trains in it, of course.  I read a bit in Trains magazine and caught up on some other magazines.  I'm off work tomorrow - supposed to get some labs done, but I might wait and do that Tuesday as with everyone home it would be nice to sleep in and make a big breakfast for everyone....  We'll see when I wake up.

TARDIS is ready and Mike can drive.  We need to get some more Famous Banilla, from SJ!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Just a quick stop before I hit the sack........Buckeye, hope you had a good one.  Your story set in 1956 rekindled memories (sans train wreck) of my first train rides frome Wausau WI to Chicago when AA engine sets were first introduced, to the Northwoods Hiawatha line I believe.  DougDG, must feel really good to belong to a group like that.  Chief, our apologies for not sending more snow your way, the inventory is low.  Dennis, home safe and sound with a family adventure in travel to remember.

Will be a long day. Got to go get the trailer ready to hook up.

Hope you had a great birthday Buckeye. Cake

Prayers to all in need.

Happy Monday and be safe,

Party's over.  Back to work. Sigh

SP I had never thought of an article for a magazine.  I have the FRA report, but I have seen newspaper accounts of the wreck with photos.  The actual route of the National Limited through WV has long been abandoned and is now a bike trail.  After reading the report again and counting car, I believe the front truck of our sleeping car was off the track.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 40s.  Watched "Desperate Housewives" and "Once Upon a Time".  Both were good.  Wife was up all night not feeling well.  Hopefully I do not get what she had as she was miserable.  I had bran muffins on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East".  It was a good flight on the Tardis.  No loop de loops, but I did toss in a couple of barrel rolls.  TBIL for tonight as well.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Mornin' boys.  Partly sunny & 34 in the "Metro" Mid-Atlantic region.  Had to clarify, as snow totally missed us above the Potomac.  Blueberry, nice shooting partner Cowboy.  Heading for a streak of mild weather this week.  Crocuses are in full bloom, and tulips are emerging.  Wifey had me pull out all of the Easter decorations.

Good morning all.  As of 07:00 this morning, I am officially on call.  It means I will be heading in a little later. I still have some tax things I need to get done, then get to some honey dos that SWMBO has in store.  Buckeye, I enjoyed reading your recollections on the train wreck.  It is amazing that something like that can happen, one end of the train in total disarray, the other end as if nothing happened.  I recall as a kid a freight train wreck down our block and the loud noise of cars being crushed.  It was a mess, and the Fire Department had not evacuated anyone, even with the tankers of fuel on their sides.  Now days, they clear the area for anything remotely like it.

Jack, yeah, it was quite a trip.  I am thankful for the reflectors marking the lanes on the road.  It was the only way we could tell where the road was.  If there had been any shelter nearby, we would have taken it.  Did come across a few trees that were down and blocking part of the road.  At least they were already down before we got to them.

Little cooler here, but supposed to head into the sixties by Wednesday.  No snow, and we are thankful for it!

God bless,

Dennis

Aloha Paradise and Happy Presidents Day where I am one of the few at work. Had a quiet weekend, complete with church volunteer celebration at a local bowling alley. 'appy Belated Birthday Buckeye! Cake. Looking forward to the next one in a few months. What an adventure on the National Limited! That's a special memory for that young man, DougDa, created by you guys who cared more for the boy than someone 'touching' their trains.

Rainy afternoon and chilly.  Temps dropping from 50 this AM to the mid 30's tonight.  Snohio on the way. ???? 50 tomorrow.  Pat might be in for some accumilation.

Being lazy and staying in.

Buckeye, your birthday present is in the mail.   Doug W, the cake for Buckeye is "right on". Laugh

Later.

I had to sign in to post this. What's up with that?

My Snow deflector kept the snow off of us here in central Virgina. However, due to settings error, the deflector sent it to far south. Sorry Chief.

Buckeye - another birthday? O'h that's right. This is the real one. Happy Cake

Danica has not earned the respect afforded to JJ, Tony Etc. It is only because she is female. I for one seriously resent her over shadowing the true heroes of NASCAR.Thumbs Down I like the name "Princess Sparkle Pony". It fits.

Morning.  No snow.  All gone except ina few shaded spots and that is going fast.  Already in mid 40's.

Got up at 3:30 AM and went out to get this photo as snohio was already melting fast.

Wanted to prove to the Yanks that you had won one.

UPS has screwed up a delivery.  The main reason is the Post Master [African-American female who can't be fired] in Rolesville.  UPS on cheap ground delivery now hands off package to the USPS for delivery.  She refused the package.  Then UPS is suppose to hold and investigate [call you] for 5 days.  The clerk for UPS shipped it back.  That clerk is now in "hot do do".  The Post Master will get "talked to" [only] by Greensboro headquarters as they have voice mail waiting for them tomorrow when they return.

"Lazing" around.  Got hockey game tonight.  Canes VS Capitals.  VIP parking, box seats and free food. Cool

Frank -- it's an unfortunate situation with your postmaster and UPS but it happens all the time.  A buddy of mine (UPS driver his whole life) tried twice to get to a farm home in the winter when the weather was bad and he just couldn't make it.  He called the recipient and explained the situation and the recipient told him just to drop it off at the post office and he would ride his snowmobile in and pick it up.  The postmaster just about threw my buddy out the post office door when he entered with the package and asked for some help, that postmaster was a dirt bag PLUS it was a small town.  My buddy just turned around and walked out, the recipients son met him at an intersection and they got the package, medical supplies!!!

When we were first married (soon to be 40 years) we lived in a small community where we had to go to the post office to get our mail.  My wife stopped in one day and didn't have the key to the box and asked in a nice way if he could help out, he did but he let her have his wrath.  I then went down and had a "discussion" with him as I had worked part time at the post office when I was in college, needless to say he learned to have a whole lot more respect for my wife and other females.  That was 1972 and disrespect ran rampant in the post office, still makes my blood pressure go up.  I gave up my rating in 1973 and have often wondered how it might have all worked out in the long run.  I do know now that postmasters are simply overwhelmed with fewer workers and more work but that's not a reason for poor customer service.  Good luck to you!

I made a trip into town today to the local library to get some reading material. 'HO Railroad from start to finish' by Jim Kelly and 'How To Build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery' by Dave Frary. It also gave me a chance to evaluate the operation of the vans automatic choke. It seems to be working perfectly. Later I got the two Bachmann GP30's off the display rack so they could have some time on the layout. The one in the photo below is #30 and has a somewhat strange decoder setup. The stock bachmann decoder has a bad motor control circuit but I left it in because it had the headlight LED's on it. So the original decoder controls the lights. The motor control is handled by an old Lenz decoder that's piggy-backed on the Bachmann decoder. The setup works quite well. The other loco has the original unmodified decoder They'll likely be going to a new home soon.

Well, I'm calling it a night. I'll have an easy day tomorrow. I thought I was going to have to take my mother to a doctors appointment in Alexandria. I got the call this evening from my father that he has tomorrow off so he'll be taking her there and back. That's a great relief for me. Driving that little Pontiac G6 of hers makes what's left of my ankle hurt, and it hurts enough already. I can see what looks like another piece of shattered bone starting to emerge from the wound on the side. I'll have to watch it closely and be ready to pick it out with the tweezers when it's pushed out. This has happened before. The last chunk was about the size of a dime. See y'all tomorrow.

Greetings from Saint Louis MO, where it was chilly but sunny today.  We picked up the van this morning, before my wife took the boys and another kid they picked up on the way to the mall for a few hours of semi-supervised fun.

I put in a few hours trying to fix my daughter's computer.  It turns out she had 9 viruses and a trojan program on her netbook.  I got the viruses and trojan cleared after the 2nd run from the online F-Secure program, but after a reboot the trojan was back.  Obviously it's down in the root of the drive.  They have another tool for that type of problem, but I already had enough time on it.  Some website of "fan fiction" goes to another site, so that website has been hacked.  I explained how these things work a bit to her and she needs to avoid those websites from now on.  I hope to get it cleared off tomorrow, as I'm just tired of messing with it now.

I think my son has a sinus infection - probably take him to the doc tomorrow.

Thursday is my wife's 2nd eye surgery, so I'll be off with her all day.

Please pray for my friend's Larry and Vickie Andreassen.  Vickie has cancer and it's looking really bad right now.

TARDIS is ready and we have some M&Ms, Chips, Cookies, and Banilla Smile

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Today's was the Wifey's birthday.  Unlike Buckeye, she only has one a year.......and her age remains at 29. Whistling  I took her out jewelry shopping since she lost one of her favorite earrings.  She got all excited and off we went.  After hitting about a dozen stores we had to give up because she couldn't find anything she liked nearly as much, so we quit the search and had an early dinner at Joe's American Bar and Grill.  We must have walked 5 miles shopping.  Did I mention I HATE SHOPPING? Bang Head

Dennis........adventures in travel!!!!!!!!  My in-laws flew out for a visit and then we drove down to Carlisle PA just South of Harrisburg (454 miles) for my son's parents' weekend at school, not far from LAZ.  Most of the way down my wife and her folks had great fun taking potshots at my driving.  The smiles abruptly stopped just North of Harrisburg as it quickly became dark as night in the middle of the afternoon, the skies opened up, and the winds ramped way up.  Visibility was about 30 feet.  If we pulled over and stopped, we risked getting hammered from the rear.  So we crept along at about 25mph with the flashers on, following a semi in front of us.  When we got to the hotel in Carlisle we dumped our stuff off in our rooms and went to the bar for a frosty.  We noticed  everyone was glued to the TV.  Apparently we had just driven through 3 tornadoes that had passed West to East right over Route 81 and us!!!!

I am pooped, off to bed!!!
