Sunny and 40's here today.

I was thinking about how nice the butcher section at the local grocery store was while Laz was telling about the miss-firing black powder firearm during his deer hunt.  Grreat fun as a hobby, but would be a royal pain if that was the way you were putting food on the table.

All for now.

Time for me to call it a night. It's still raining and storms are still threatening. I worked on the Accurail DT&I covered hopper today. It now sports Kadee #242 gear boxes with #118 couplers. I also tossed those ridiculous truck pivot pins and put brass screws in their place, so now the trucks won't fall off at some inopportune or location. I still need the end sill and ladders for one end but maybe I'll stumble across one some day. No cleanup work on the layout I'm afraid. Too busy watching some old Mission Impossible shows from the first season. That was before Peter Graves joined the cast.

See y'all tomorrow.

DougM - Glad you liked it. It was made in 1956. When I picked this up at HudsonJohn's house we thought of you right away. It's a flawless runner capable of pulling 10 cars or more easily.

JoeD - That billboard was a gift from the wife, real nice! It even lights up. BTW - since you're a day ahead of us can you give us the results of the Super Bowl this year? My football pool looks pretty high this year! Laugh (of couse I'll cut you in on the winnings!)

Wow - really warm out today, like almost 60 degrees!  High tomorrow will be about 55.

Local guy is fighting for his right to shoot the squirrels that were getting into his attic space.  State law says he can shoot them on his own property to protect his house and he's using a pellet gun.  Locals passed an ordnance to say he can't do it.  It's going to be challenged in the state courts, you can bet on that!  I think he's in the right on this.

Had to research a lot of training materials today for a class I'm giving on Wednesday.  Sure made the day go fast!

TARDIS is ready, so let's go guys!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Evening All.....

Had a good day, was off, and attempting to get caught up on some of the  chores.  Got the door lock motors replaced, boy a HUGE difference!  Best $80 I've spent in a LONG time.  Then managed to wash 3 cars, did some shipping, and repaired to pool table Chris made a few years ago.  (Goes in a building on the layout.)  Purchased one of MTH's  small buildings, (Seafood diner) and modified it.  Pool table fits in perfect, going to rename the building "Sloppy Shot's Pool Hall".

Have the day off tomorrow as well.  Going to take down Christmas Decorations, try to work on the flagpole, (Need to paint the Eagle).  And if there is time work in the train room.

Hope everyone has a good day, and God Bless.

A sincere thanks to you guys for your prayers and positive thoughts for my buddy, Frank.  Additional medical complications have set in.  He is struggling mightily but is in tough shape.   My buddy has been living on a shoestring, is a loner, and has nothing to fall back upon except family.  An only child, he has no other friends (just acquaintances) and he has no blood relatives close by that I was aware of over the years.    I have been desperately trying to locate family, next of kin.

With the help of my daughter and wife, we were was able to pour through his old paper phone directories and scraps of paper and map out a plan.  Yup, I just took his keys and cell phone, went over to his apartment, and started searching for something to go on.

Called his ex from many years ago for help.  The last names in the phone directories were not the same as his, so we had to go on first names or last names that might ring a bell in my and the ex's head.  The phone numbers I called were not in service, one after another, and I also needed to take care I didn't reach a 90+ year old aunt and make (her) matters worse.  His cell phone directory was useless, even though arguably it was the most current and should have been my best bet.  It wasn't.

Contacted his employer and landlord last Friday and got things rolling with them.

I finally got lucky and put a couple of names together, remembering a male's first name (a cousin) and a woman's first name (the cousin's mother), an aunt whom I recalled was 90+.   But I only had the number for the aunt and reached her.  Told her my name and needed to reach her son on an urgent matter.  Didn't mention my buddy (her nephew).  Found out later that this aunt was my buddy's mother's sister.

She was suspicious of me on the phone, probably thought I was a telemarketer or something similar.  But she took down my name and number and passed on to the cousin (who doesn't know me from Adam) request for a return call anyway.  It only takes one hit to get things back on track.

The cousin called me back in 15 minutes, and he is a three hour drive away.    So I was hopeful we had a productive start.  We did, almost.

The cousin has been superficially helpful, but not in matters that count, not yet.  This cousin wants me to take on the responsibility to serve as Frank's power of attorney for health and for financial matters if we can get the documents approved by the medical staff.......not likely right now because my buddy Frank cannot communicate, is in a coma, and his neuro state will be questionable if he can get that far.

I visit my buddy for a few hours each day.  My wife accompanied me over the weekend.  He needs to know one thing in whatever state of awareness he has: he isn't alone, even in the coma.  At this point my buddy's family (the cousin has brothers, other cousins) remains detached and is really letting my buddy down.  No visits, no plans to visit, nothing.

It ain't over.

The time for a full court press by me is approaching, even if I have to threaten the cousin that I will call his 90 year old mother, drop a dime on him, and shame him into a better frame of mind.  His brothers, the other cousins, will be next.

In years gone by, my Dad often reminded me that we don't get to choose our family or neighbors.  In this instance, sadly, his wisdom becomes clearer to me by the day.

More later.

Jack

Konbanwa,

I don't have anything exciting to write today.  I watched the Bama-LSU game while knocking out some work today in the office.  Bama sure made some adjustments from the last time they played.  It's been a quiet evening at home and it's now time for some schoolwork.

Jack - You are amazing.  You are proving how valuable true friends are.  I'll keep praying for you and Frank and for his family.  God bless you.

Roy - Are you planning to share any photos of this layout project?

Doug - Thanks.  This site has neat toys.  I saw some cool planes, but this has really caught my eye.  http://www.tintoyarcade.com/products/Bavarian-Express-German-Tramway.html  I'm wondering if I could incorporate into a Christmas layout.

V8 - I hope you are feeling better.

Kev - I don’t blame you for taking the shelves with you.

AF Ray - I wish it worked that way.  I’m pulling for the Broncos at this point.

Sayonara,

Joe

Aloha from a sunny and warm Chicago. Looks like today and tomorrow in the 40s and then the hammer drops Wed. night. Oh well, it's been great being warm. Went to visit the fishes at the big Shedd Aquarium during lunch tomorrow. Since it's a 20 min. walk through Grant Park, I usually don't go in Jan. Today maybe the Museum of Contemporary Art which is way up Michigan Ave. Another place I wouldn't go in the cold.

Joe,
that tram is fun!  It's a bit over 3 ft. long but small. I'm sure you can work it into the layout.  Did you see the Paya reproductions too? Jack, you are a saint. If he's not conscious, you can't easily take power-of-attorney (at least in IL). Kev, hope your hand feels better. That sounds painful. Ray, can't wait to hear after you run your newest acquisition! Roy, even with rain, I manage to kill most of the things I plant in my yard - including the grass. Laz, that's real shooting. Good thing the British had them too or we'd still colonies!

Boy, last night's game really shows what you can do with so much time to prepare.

Good morning,

Another nice day here in North Central Illinois, going up to 55 today.

Not much going on other than trying to work out the Beep 027 S curve thingy with Walter from RMT if I can. Installed my LED in the floodlights yesterday. It is a huge improvement for only $9.00.

Jack I think you are doing a great job for Frank and hope you and him all of the best. I know it is hard to not be discouraged in times like this but it sounds like you are his best bet.  Angel

You all have a good day,

Kev.

Good morning. It's 57° and cloudy. The high is expected to be 62° with 50% chance of rain and thunderstorms.

I woke up this morning to find myself in a most unusual situation. Sometime during the night a fully loaded metal DVD rack containing over a hundred DVD's broke loose from the wall and landed on the upper part of my back. It only had a few feet to fall so it didn't hurt much. The whole thing together probably weighs a few dozen pounds. It seems that what happened was a thin hanger strip across the back of the unit broke off. In any event that was the only piece still on the wall. So after getting out from under it I unloaded the thing, drilled several holes through the upper part of it's back then several more through the lower part and reattached it to the wall with six one and a half inch wood screws with washers and did away with the chintzy hanging strip it came with. It had been on the wall for around ten years. It should be able to stay there for another twenty years without a problem. I got it reloaded with the DVD's all in alphabetical order. All that kept me busy for the better part of three hours. I'm just happy it wasn't a rack like the one standing on the other side of the room. It holds at least another hundred DVD cases, about a third of which are movie collections holding three or DVD's per case. It also holds about two hundred VHS video cassettes, several emergency lights, spare batteries for said lights, a 13" antique computer monitor, a rice box, a Pioneer stereo and several dozen large books and a myriad of miscellaneous items. You could say that the floor on that side of the room is well anchored! That rack is well worth the $40 I paid for it! It's a four shelf book case that measures four feet high, four feet wide and a foot thick. And I wouldn't like it if something that big fell on me.

Lunch Time,

Finally able to post.

Prayer request: A fellow Vol. Firefighter from another Fire Co. has an 11 year old son who has terminal cancer. I would have posted this last month but for some reason it would not let me post. The doctors said that he would not live to Christmas. He fooled them. The Fire Co. made him an Honorary Member. We gave him an escort from the hospital and a show of support afterwards. Check it out on Youtube under Convoy for Kyle. His request when he dies is for a Fireman's Funeral. This group has done wonders before so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

John

Good Afternoon!

V8Dennis - Yeah, it's an enthusiast's car, but I like it so far.  I'd rather have a 2 door than a four door.

As promised ( a little late ) the gift from RT, still has me smilin':

Jack - You're doing the right thing.....Angel for you and Frank.

HudsonJohn: I saw that on Facebook, I'm going to try to send him a patch.  He's in Barnegat and that's not too far away.  Message me if something happens.

Jeff - Glad you are ok...I'm sure that was a surprise/shock.

Had a phone interview yesterday morning and that went well.  Have 3 more phone calls to make for employment this afternoon.  Spent 6 hours today doing paid firefighter stuff....Smile, Wink & Grin.  Cash is good!

Princess made it off and is in sunny FLA.  She's already tearin' up Jax....Bang HeadDead

Parents are on their way back, they should be home 5-6 PM, then leave Sunday for Mexico.

In the 30's this AM up to 47 later.

Gots to get finished cleaning up then phone calls.

I went to my Youtube account to look up the 'Convoy For Kyle' video. Found three of them. I was about to post them on my forum when I noticed one of my members beat me to it by mere minutes! He posted all three. I must say that watching them was a moving experience even for an veteran fire fighter like myself.

Evening. Long day.  Tomorrow is the rescheduled nuclear stress test in the morning.  Suppose to rain all day.

Jack, prayers and stick in there.  You are a good man [for a Yankee Yes].

Hudson, prayers for the young man. Sad

LAZ and Banks, keep your powder dry. Laugh

SHE IS READY TO ROLL!!!

The box is ready for the mover.  All skirting removed [and hauled home], all water lines cut loose under the flooring, drains lines cut loose under the flooring and all wiring cut free.  We even pulled the water lines and septic/drain lines out from under the trailer.  Junky double front deck pulled out into the field to burn [Chevy pickup did it].  Small back desck and steps are in back yard hauled by trailer here.  Mover has to jack her up, put axles and tires under, take tie down straps loose and bolt on tongue.  Now depends on the amout of rain tomorrow.  He has to come across the field next door [pretty solid as not plowed up] and across my garden.  Praying that it will not be too much rain and he can make it.  If all goes well, by Thursday night, the box will be set.  Then I have to bury, for a short distance, 200 ft. of number 6 wire [going aerial under big shelter].  Get heatpump reinstalled and put on skirting.  Will build new front deck.  Then the work begins.  Redoing ceiling, taking out kitchen cabinets, stove, sink, hot water heater, refrig, all bath fixtures and three walls.

Love my new cellphone.

Later.

Good afternoon all, got a new thingy called an oximeter at the drug store today so I can check my blood oxygen level and pulse rate anywhere I go.  Might come in handy doing exercise or traveling.  I've been wanting one of these for a long time but thought you had to have a prescription.  However, you can buy it over the counter so I got one for a little over $50.  Some of them are more expensive but this one seems to work fine.  Don't know if it's covered by medicare or not but I paid for it myself.

Chief, sounds like you are rarin to go with the "box".  It's all packed up and ready to travel.  If you can't have a bathroom in it, how about a chamber pot?  I have a toilet in my garage/train room but I usually come in the house most of the time cause the one outside is just a toilet without a wash basin adjacent.  I just use it if I can't wait.

Jeffrey, didn't know you were a firefighter.  You probably mentioned it before but I must have missed it.  My next door neighbor is a firefighter also but he is retiring now on a disability.  He has had a lot of wear and tear too.

Went for another walk for the second day in a row now.  I have to keep this up to build up my stamina again.  Haven't done any regular walking for several months now.

Still on the look out for my new WBB Baldwin 4-6-0 steam engine.  Probably be here by tomorrow.  We took down the Christmas Tree yesterday but I still have a loop of fastrack on the floor.  I will put that away tomorrow.

good night all,

Ray
