Hi GUYZ,

Well our school, like most here, is closed due to flooding.  In the past 48 hours we received 10+ inches of rain.  The Susquahanna is slated to crest at 28.5 feet on Saturday.  The all time high water mark of AGNES back in'72 was at 32.5 feet.  If it doesn't stop raining today we might exceed that mark.  Looks like my gun show in Harrisburg will be cancelled.  Maybe no school again tomorrow.

DON B., we live about 1.5 miles from the river, on a hill so we are ok.  Just a little trickle of water by the floor drain in basment.

Stay frosty,

laz57

Aloha. Another 'crisp' sunny Fall day here.  Ran trains last night. Roy, hope you get some more rain!  Brutus, I'm jealous of your Percy / Ivor find. Congratulations!  SJ, prayers for granny's knee. I'm impressed with the Tigers this year. The Sox are fading fast.  Joe, once you're over there, your Japanese will be better. Immersion works! Can you believe we have parrots here in Chicago too - an escaped pair allegedly begat whole tree-fulls - and they survive our winters too.  Don, that's a great Tardis link. Uh oh, United's calling. That's never good. I'm not traveling for another two months but I'm sure the flight's changed.

Mornin' boys...Zzz  Big StormLightningStorm rolled through middle of the night.  Too much water, and with threat of power loss, stood guard over the sump pump for awhile.  Spent yesterday on the Baltimore/Howard Co border, as Gwynns Falls simply got mean mid-day.  Then Fifepup woke up late, entitling me to a 45 min ride to school in bumper-to-bumper traffic.  Not much conversation along the way.

Oh well, lots of folks got it way worse.

BTW got my gold plated 25 year pin from PD (1 1/2 years later).

8ntruck

Another nice September day today.

Interesting day today at work.  One of my projects has reached crisis mode - so now I have backing to work on it.  Other 'help' too - what is taking so long, how come it isn't ready, what's the problem, etc, etc.  Months ago, when I said this work needs to be done before we got into volume production, it was never deemed important enough to be supported - no  immideate need. Bang Head  Oh well.  Chalk it up to corporate entertainment factor and go on 'cause we learned some new things about how the tools work today.

Go Tigers!

8N.........I love to pull out that 6-9 month old email with the challenge clearly stated, the options listed, the solution recommended, the benefits summarized, the posiible obstacles delineated, the required resources outlined, the costs estimated, the responsible parties identified, and the time-line required for victory.  Then resend that same unaltered email to the same crew, including the higher ups.  If "we" choose to stand still, that is exactly where we will find ourselves in a deeper panic down the road.  SoapBox

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Rain Day #4 From Lake Taxachusetts,

Chuck........  Angel continue for your recovery.  I suggest you take a speed reading course before you tackle your Pot "reading" arrearage.  Laugh

The past month in these here parts have left little respite for so many folks in my State.  We had the multiple and massive power outages, devastating tornadoes, Irene, and now this.  Somehow, my family and I have been spared throughout this spate of bad weather, but so many have not been as fortunate.  Wifey said she encountered a flooded railroad viaduct blocking her intended path this AM, and she had to figure out an alternate route.  City crews are out in front of my house checking out the street drains and running a street sweeper to make sure the some of the water keeps headed towards the......well, the Atlantic Ocean.  The rest makes its way to the pond behind my house.  The outflow structure for the pond seems to be losing the battle with the amount of inflow; so I suspect that too will overflow its banks before things are through.  I am up high enough so it will be a non-issue.  Bet some of my (lower lying) neighbors are in need of some valium right now.

Some streets and roads are now closed (again) from flooding, and folks are being encouraged to stay home if they can.  The downpour my wife and I drove in last night to and from dog training let up only briefly while we were out and about.  Even the folks travelling on on the interstate were (uncharacteristically) driving much slower and holding their lanes.  Normally, it is 80 MPH and incessant lane changes, like on a NASCAR race's road course.  If the State would at the least repaint the worn away lane lines on our highways, one wouldn't have to guess where one's lane (and the edge of the highway) ends and something else begins.  Add in the dark of night, the torrential downpour, and the glare of headlights, and it all makes for some unsettling travel.

Wifey asked me how "we" are going to get the lawn (which is growing rapidly) cut.  "We."  Nice word.  Think she meant "you."

LAZ..........did you and Minnie go for a swim this morning?  Our dog hates the rain, and getting him to go out with me and take care of business is not quite as simple as it might at first seem. Bang Head  Technically, Maximus is my wife's dog.  But in times like this she shares ownership.  Bang Head

Roy........I suppose the placement of soaker hoses on timers around your foundation don't work, not to mention the cost of water and watering bans.  Wish I could send you some of our H2O.

SJ........does Granny's orthopedic pit stop mean you are the Chef for the next few weeks?  Sounds to me you are going to get to know the pizza and Chinese delivery folks quite well.  You will have all of our prayers for her full recovery.  Angel

Later, gang.  Stay dry, get wet, or cool down.

Jack.

D. Baker, that is bad news about the city raising the rent on the club building.  I hope you have enough members to afford the increase.  You guys have one of the best club layouts around.  It would be tragic to lose it.  What ever happened to giving seniors a break.  I know at least some of you fit that mold.  I remember when things like fishing license were free to seniors but not anymore.  I have to hold my tongue here about politics but I am surely tempted.

It was so hot here yesterday, the air conditioner ran non stop from morning until night.  I'm afraid to see my next light bill.  We have over 100 temps predicted today also.  Pray that we don't have any brush fires during this heat wave.

I watched the debate on TV from the Reagan Library last night.  I have not been there yet but would like to and see that Boeing 707 Air Force One hanging in the building there.  Our TCA division put on train displays at the Nixon Library twice so I have seen a lot of that one.  We are not doing one this year as the management wants to do something different.

later,

Ray

The rivers are cresting above flood stage and areas around the Passaic River are flooded again, some worse than before.

AF53, Sorry but I was not home last night and did not know if the UPS guy came or not. I will be home about 4:30 today. Instructors meeting at the Vo-Tech tonight.

Hello all,

Fife, Congas on the pin.

Been an interesting week so far.

Helped son plant 3acres of alfalfa / orchard grass with barley as a cover crop over the weekend. Mrs & I did 18 quarts of tomato juice on Monday. Yesterday morning as I was heading out the door to take Mom to Pittsburgh for her first followup I heard water running in the basement. Not a good sound. Turned out to be a fountain about 6" high out of the floor drain in the family room & furnace room. I stuffed a rag in both and found the small pump we use to pump out holes. It got the 2" down to 1/2'' before I left almost an hour late for Pittsburgh. Who knows how deep it would have gotten if no one was home.

Mom got a good report from her Docs. We return Dec 13th for another check.

After I got home I surveyed the damage. The new hay field has some severe washes. About 1/4 of it will need redone.

The reason the floor drain backed up is a sloppy job by PennDot when they replaced a drain pipe across the road last summer. About 1/3 of the entrance is blocked and the water backed up in the ditch. My Pap built my house in 1957. Many much worse rains never resulted in a wet basement.

88 - Looks like you're gonna have the tough commute today.

Banks - Would be interesting to see what Rockville Bridge looks like right now.  Mighty tough week to be near the Susquehanna, upstream or down.

Honestly, the Mid-Atlantic region hasn't seen water totals like this since AGNES back in '72.  Which, coincidentally, forever changed the railroading scene in Maryland.

Fife, congrats on the pin.

Good evening all,

Welcome back Chuck!  It's great to see you back here.

Day two of my invasion went well.  Academically, it was an easy day as well.  I'm watching the Packers-Saints game now.  Neither one is my team so I'll just enjoy the game.  The Yankees lost today, but at least the Sox are losing right now.

Good night,

Joe

Oh what a great evening to check in...Welcome Back CHUCK!!!!!, it is great to see that you are awake and active.  Now listen, do your exercises, breathing treatments, take your meds, stay away from anything that will hurt your lungs, etc., and do as your docs tell you!  You have certainly drawn a lot of us to focus prayer on you and Paula.  We will keep them coming!  It is great to have you back....you have a lot of folks who care about you big guy.

Joe, glad you made it down to the deep south!  Hope to make arrangements to visit soon.  I am on call and have been working a lot of long cases.  I will check in with SWMBO and find out when we can head that way.

Don, good luck with the city.  Sad thing is that they will be quick to kick a group out who pays a certain rent without having any viable group to move in and rent the place at higher fees.  Then, they lose the revenue from the first group and the place just goes to pot.

Regarding parrots, they are neat to go see at an aviary or zoo, but I can do without the wild ones.  When I lived in south Florida, they were everywhere.  Boy can they be loud too.  Never mind the mess they leave behind.

Chief, our bow season opens up too.  This year the limit is 12 deer.  Also, our season goes till the middle of January.  Regarding senior licenses, Georgia does have a good deal for seniors.  They also have lifetime sport hunting/fishing licenses that are a good deal if you buy them for your children.  Even if they move out of state, they keep them.

Well, it has been a long day.  Going to head into bed.  Hope that each of you has a great night.  I need to go thank God for the answered prayers with our friend Chuck!

God Bless,
Dennis

Wow!  A live post from Chuck!   Atta boy Chuck and keep up the good work for recovery.  You had a lot of guys sending up prayers for  you and we will send more for recovery.  Should we call you Lazrus?  Just kidding but it appears the Lord has done wonderous things to you.

I tried to do what I consider a simple job this afternoon.  Stopped by Ace hardware and got a new leader hose to attach to a bad on in the hose reel/caddy.  It was about 105 outside but I was in the shade. Hose was a little too small to go over the nipple on the thing but I forced it on.  I also cut the wrong end off of the hose before attaching to get rid of unwanted thingy on the end of the hose.  Went back to Ace and got an adapter to fix my mistake.  I finally got the thing hooked up but it still leaks a little around some of the connections..  Used clamps on them as tight as I could go.  By the time I got through I was wringing wet with sweat from the heat.  What was that saying?  Only mad dogs and Englishman go out in the noon day sun..  Finally had lunch about 4:00PM and a nap.  Just woke up about 7:00PM.  Got to figure out what we will do about dinner now.  Back was complaining after all this activity.  All I need to know now is where to go to surrender.  I give up.

Welcome back Chuck.

More EF (Entertainment Factor) at work tomorrow.  I got pulled into the 'how did we let this happen' meeting on the project I was venting about yesterday.  With the people involved, and the documentation that is available, I think my part will be a minor part of the meeting.  Going to have to remember to install a new scarcasam filter before the meeting and put my 'keep your mouth shut' cue card in my pocket.

Can anybody reccomend 'must visit' train shops in the Cleveland area?  Just found out I've got a business trip there in the near future.

All for now.

Let's see, 8:10pm here, so most of you have probably gone to bed.  Therefore, Good Morning.

Ray - I have those days as well, sometimes you just can't do anything right, and everything seems to just "go wrong", THEN the next day the opposite.  Hope the bad days don't become to frequent.

Looks like there is a major power outage going on here, obviously I'm not affected.  But, guess over a million people are in Arizona and So. Cal, (San Diego and Orange Co.)  What's really strange is that San Onofre Nuclear Plant is right in the middle.  Doug dg is probably affected.

SURE GLAD TO SEE CHUCK BACK !!  GREAT TO SEE YOUR POST !

Talked with John F, earlier.  Seems he managed through the rain OK, but sure was a lot of people affected in his area.

Going to be heading up to Reno tomorrow, taking Chris to a campsite then up to see my brother for a couple of days.  It will be a pleasant drive and should be an enjoyable trip.

Jack - You need to increase the font.  Your stuff is always worth reading, but having to print it out, then putting under a microscope, is a pain.  Or was it that you had folks looking over your shoulder?

Listened to the President's speech tonight, now I'm fully motivated and looking forward to tomorrow.

Till later best wishes for all, Chuck glad to see you back, hope the flood waters don't rise, and the fires subside.

God Bless

WELCOME BACK CHUCK!!!

I sure hope you continue to improve every day and get back on the dining car schedule!  We all missed you, brother!

RAY - Love that Gilbert and Sullivan song about mad dogs and Englishmen Thumbs Up

Prayers too for all those in the flood areas, Laz, Banks and RIJ!  Keep your powder dry!

8NT - sounds like situation normal to me.  Oh - Electric Trains Outlet on Page is great, you will like it.  They are pretty much MSRP, but they have a really wide collection of stuff in O gauge with mostly Lionel, MTH, and some Atlas.  When will you be in town?  I might be able to meet you for a burger somewhere for lunch?  Maybe you can come over to Union Station, which is right next to where I work?  They have a very small display of train stuff, but it is worth a quick visit?  Send me an IM on here if you want to try.

Doug - that Percy showed up today and someone really did a job on it.  I sent a message to the seller with a long list of the problems including parts glued in place that should come off, like the smoke stack which releases the face, a couple stripped screws, glue drips on one side, rubbed pain, re-glued bumpers that are not even, etc.  I told him I will keep it for parts, but want to know what he will do before I post feedback on this engine.

Don - good luck on the rent, man.  Thanks for the TARDIS link, I really like that website.  I even had a hardcopy of their catalog one time, but loaned it out and it disappeared as usually happens.

Haven't seen the pic, but Congrats Roy!

RT - glad to hear your spirits were uplifted!

Really needed to mow the yard tonight, but just haven't been feeling well this week, so took it easy.  I'll try to get to it this weekend.

Chief - better get ready for that snow!

Fife - congrats!

I know I missed a lot of commentary here, but I am not good at that, lol!  God bless us, every one.

TARDIS is ready, so let's go!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
