Good Morning,

Another Rainy Morning in NJ, Good Day to be at Work. I must be nuts!

Chief, I know what you mean about people and being "Humane". We have the same problem in NJ with the bear & deer hunts. Now that bears are breaking into houses, deer are doing property damage it is ok now.

AF53, Ray I heard the Chrissy Story at the Firehouse last night from the Birthday Boy.

Prayers for Chuck for a quick recovery.

Good Morning

70/83 today.

Your right Doug, the last post I could find from him was Saturday, no mention of being sick. Special thoughts for him today.

I wanted to cut the grass early before it gets warm but everything is wet from overnight dew. New frying pan survived my first cook with it, but left it for granny to clean...s.j.

Looks like my 1-year-and-five-days old lawn mower is dead. Good excuse not to cut anything I guess.

Prayers offered for Chuck today.  Sorry you are having such a rough time buddy.  Get well soon.

Jack, my garage window is the sliding type.  One half is stationary and the other half slides.  Probably would have to redo the entire window.  Thanks for the information.  I need to rewire the place also.  Definetly would have to if I put in A/C.  At the moment, a lot of little chores are piling up.  Need service on the car and need dental work.  Went to doc today about the back trouble following up on ER visit back on the 4th and 5th.  He is trying prednesone for a short course of 5 days only to reduce inflamation.  I have been holding my own with just Aleve but he says prednesone is a lot stronger.  Only problem is too many side effects for long term use.  Doc wants to see me again in two weeks.

I need to get walking again as soon as I'm able to help with weight gain.  Put on 5 lbs in the last 2-3 weeks.

later,

Ray

Hi GIZ,

I am taken back by the news.  Had to take time for a prayer for CHUCK and will say one tonite too.

Went up to help work on the Lokie at the PIONEER TUNNEL.  We got all the tubes pulled today all 79.  Toke out the blower pipe, main drive extension pipe for the cylinders, intake and exhaust pipe assembly. and bonnet.  cleaned and grinded all those surfaces, and cleaned up all internal surface of the boiler.  Tomorrow the boiler guys are going to spin in new tubes and hydo test it and then the guys will pt all the parts back in and have it fired up for friday?  The big Pioneer Day is set for Saturday so we hope all is ok.  The big thing I learned today while working on this is that these tube when they get a 1/16 inch scale on it it actually is like having 3-4 inches of insulation on the tubes and that is not helping in the steam process.  Just that little amount of scale makes it very inefficent in helping produce steam.  The tough part was cutting out all the tubes after that its easy.

Will post pics tomorrow?

Stay frosty,

laz57

Laz, do they use treated water in the boiler on the lokie?  A friend of mine used to fire a steam engine at Knotts Berry Farm out here (near Disneyland) and they always dropped something in the water tank on the tender when they filled up with water.  The old timers used to have a saying that "if you wouldn't drink it, don't put it in a boiler."  Sounds like that scale could be a real problem.  I feel the same as you about Chuck.  We are all concerned about him.

More prayers for ChuckAngel

Prayers continue.

Work, work, work today.  They think more overtime might help.  Riiiiiiggggghhhhttttt.  NOT.

Stopped at Walmart tonight for some supplies.  Tomorrow, I need to pick up kids from school - first day back to school here.  I'll stop and put some stuff in the mail on the way home.  Also might need to stop at Best Buy for some computer stuff.  Kids will love running around with me after a hard day at school, but oh well!

TARDIS is ready, so beacons.  We need to make a special Cheerios run to a good buddy.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Cloudy, rain showers and in the 70's today.

Continued prayers for Chuck.

Interesting day at work today.  Group of VIP type people jetted in and toured the plant.  Of course, we had to stop everything and spiffy the place up.  Wasted an hour and a half looking for parts of a couple of my projects as a result of them being 'put away' on one of the off shifts last night. Bang Head

Laz - scale build up is very bad news in a boiler.  Scale is a lousy conductor of heat.  Might expalin some of the poor performance that you have been mentioning lately.  Years ago, I had the opportunity to tour one of the power plants in Lansing, Mi.  One of the things I took away from that tour was that the feedwater to the boilers in the power plant was cleaner than the drinking water supplied by the city water department!  Was doing some reading about the care and feeding of boilers recently and ran across this topic.  Was not really pertenant to the subject I was researching, so I just skimmed the section on scale formation.  Seems like scale formation was porportional to water hardness?

All for now.

Prayers for Chuck.  Good night all.  Take a look at this.  This video was shot [by cel phone] on the back side of Main Street Park 3 days ago.  Debate.  Young coyotes or distroted vidoe due to cellphone and they are foxes.

 http://www.youtube.com/user/mahonemb1?feature=mhee

I set up caller this past evening at this location.  Instantly got two foxes that came to the electronic caller barking and trying to get the caller.  This went on for 30 minutes.  No coyotes came.  Going to use caller and video this coming evening.

Sleep tight.

Hi GUYZ,

  Countinued Prayers for CHUCK.

Ran an easy enjoyable 3.25 miles today on rails to trails at Ned Smith Lands.  Took my dog MINNIE, she loved it.  Told her we are going running she gets all excited.  Now she is taking a nap.  Gotta dig out clothes line pole today then replant it.  Hope to get pics of Lokie retubing on later.

SPMAN and 8NTRUCK. after every day before we put him to bed we fill up the saddle tank then put and additive in the water to help prevent the scaling process.  This stuff is green like antifreeze but we only use about 8 oz.

Stay frosty,

Good not so early morning everyone.  Worked all day yesterday, then had to go to a school function for our daughter.  Got home in time for  a nice conversation with an old friend on the phone.  I am on call so brought kids into school this morning.  Dropped son off, then daughter, then noticed son forgot lunch, so had to swing back and go to his school again.  Glad I didn't drive all the way home.

I already said my morning prayers, and of course, Chuck led in those intercessions.  Have a lot on the plate for today and for the near future.  Currently listening to some talking heads saying that food stamps actually stimulate the economy....HUH, doesn't make sense to me.  I guess it makes jobs for those in government who run these programs.

Laz, while they are doing the tubes, will they re-do the bearings, etc?  While it makes sense with the down time, I wonder if the expense and down time will allow for more extensive work.

Hope each of you have a great day.  God Bless,
Dennis

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Sunny Taxachusetts,

To begin, Angel prayers and good thought continue for Blueberry Hill.  Get well soon, Chuck!

Got a (flaming, irate, angry, ballistic) phone call from the travelling wifey last night regarding air travel.  She had a flight yesterday with one stop to switch planes and continue on to her final destination..  Conclusion: air travel has become a chore if not a nightmare rather than a convenience.

Wifey got to the airport here 90 minutes early and without a snag, thanks to the RI52 livery service. The unpleasantries began here on the front end while she was boarding her flight.  A gate attendant erroneously concluded her carry-on would not fit under the seat in front of her.  This carry-on was the exact same bag that for the past 10 years has fit under every aircraft seat (commuter to 747) on every airline (domestic and international) and through every airline template, and is within the airline in question's website measurement restrictions for carry-ons.  They messed with the wrong passenger:  The flight departed with her carry-on stowed beneath on front of her.   Score:  Wifey 1, Airline 0.

Wifey arrived in Chicago on time and had a 50 minute layover to switch planes, plenty of time for the airline to move her checked bag from one plane to another.  But when she got to her final destination, she and other passengers found their checked bags missing.  To add insult to injury, this airline charges $25 per checked bag.  The airline assured her that her suitcase would arrive later and be delivered directly to her hotel.  Score:  Wifey1  Airline 1.

What's the big deal?  Her luggage never arrived on the (only) subsequent arriving flight last night, 3 hours later.  So she found herself at her hotel, forced to scramble-shop in a strange city at 8:30PM last night, without so much as a toothbrush to freshen up for today's activities.  Score:  Airline 2  Wifey 1.

Women like my wife travel with a ton of very select, specific toiletries, equipment, and clothing to help them hold out an entire month should a nuclear war, tsunami, or a 10 degree change in temperature occur.  And they/she are adamant (inflexible) about their product preferences.  I didn't hear back from her last night or since, and I am glad she has had time to cool off.  And I just hope her suitcase arrives at her hotel today.

Final Score:  TBD, but the wifey lost this one.

As an aside, husbandly humor to help put these unexpected things into proper perspective is a bad idea because wives seldom find humor in any of this.  Even my suggestion she visit the hotel bar for medicinal purposes fell on deaf ears. Drinks  Husbandly advice is a similarly bad idea because when a woman is in ballistic mode, every well-meaning (and effective) alternative plan of action suggested by said husband is found to be fully without merit and replete with unwanted, unacceptable compromises.  Bang Head

Later, gang.

Jack

Back at work for a few days. My current work schedule is keeping me moving.

Continued prayers for chuck.

Chief - did you ever find those foxes or coyotes?

Laz - sounds like you have been getting some experience on the Lokie. Hopefully you didn't have to needle gun the inside of the boiler while the tubes were out. Couple of the guys on the Nevada Northern got to do that on the #40 a few years back. Hearing protection required.

Take care all

Sleep tight.

I am no animal expert Chief but from the look of the head, ears, snout, and tail they sure look like foxes to me, albeit a tad taller and skinnier than what we see up here in New England.  Adolescent foxes would be my guess.  I am not a hunter.  I am sensitive to reasonable peaceful co-existence, as long as it is safe for people, their children, and their pets.  Unfortunately, substantive action by the powers that be is seldom taken until disaster strikes and the heat on the local officials to act is turned way up.

We have ongoing and growing coyote issues here as well, ones we didn't have 23 years ago when we first moved here.  You might think that the Northeast and New England is one vast expanse of urban and suburban sprawl.  Such is not the case.

One night roughly two years ago, around the time we usually let the dogs out back off leash for a final pit stop, the wife and I were on the second floor (elevated vantage point).  We heard some rustling/racket and some distinct on-and-off whining in the wetlands directly behind our home, about 20 yards off our rear deck.  I turned on the back lights to shed some light on things.  We could initially see nothing but moving brush.  The rustling and whining in the weeds and brush continued.  Then we plainly saw one small coyote (the bait) and what looked like 4 more laying in wait (the assasins).  We assumed they had our nightly pattern down pat and came looking for a quick dinner, our dog.  We are not allowed to shoot coyote (or anything else for that matter), and our local animal control is ill-equipped to help or mitigate this growing problem.

The coyote (and deer) are migrating closer in to the populated areas.....instead of away from them and toward the large, vast open spaces just West of me.  For the easier meals I assume because the coyote population is growing and the pickings out in the open spaces are getting sparse.  Residents reporting sightings are advised to keep any food (like dog), water, and garbage secured, and to be careful with pets while outdoors.  That's it.  That is the master plan.

The number of coyote sightings and encounters here and in my surrounding towns are steadily on the rise.  The number of fatal pet encounters as well.  So too the reported MIA cats and smaller dogs.  And there are a growing number of more brazen daylight standoffs with people and kids.  The town's approach is short-sighted, do nothing.  Something has to give, and it won't be on the humanoid side of the equation.  The inevitable ugly encounter will occur.  And then belatedly my municipality and the others will have to take the very same action they should have in the first place.

Now I can't speak for you guys, but if my dog were being attacked by coyote out back, my wife would be standing at the back door in a flash, holding it open, while screaming at me to run out like Rambo, unarmed if that is the case, and save her dog.  Smile, Wink & Grin Bang Head

Pass the rifle and ammo, please.

Jack.

Lunch Time,

Continued prayers for Chuck.

RI Jack, I totally agree with you on wives.

I knew this mornings post of mine was too good to be true. I was asked to work Friday and Saturday. I told the manager that I have plans for this weekend, but if I have to... He stopped me and said that since I stepped up for Monday and Tuesday he will figure something else. They depend on me too much and he said that I deserve the time off.  Amazing

Thougths and Prayers for all in need.

John
