JACK,

No I do notm need a license to run this engine it is a narrow gauge anthracite fired steam engine that goes out about a mile then back.  Here is a you tube video of one of our engineers (not me).

Morning all,

Another nice day on tap.  Might just put some new trains on the layout.  Not new, but new to the layout for a while.

Also do have to get back to work on doll house for GD #5.

A nice crowd at the RR Museum of PA yesterday.  Next week should be a wild one as Thomas will be at the Strasburg RR across the street for 9 days starting on the 18th.  I will be volunteering at the Museum on the 21st & 22nd so there will be lots of kids there those days.

traindood, I tell my kids the same, but to no avail.

Take care,

traindood

Mornin':    Swell day here today......

Got heating oil today 3.50 a gal. Says i got a good price!    Bang Head   Going up 17 cents a gal. next week! YIKES!  Glad i resisted buying a second car. Can't imagaine how the young parents make ends meet.  I tell my own kids to stop spending so much money, you're goona need it.   But, what do I know?          later.

Amen, traindood.  My heating fuel oil company is very large, full service, but yet is not anywhere near the lowest priced company around.  They show up very quickly in the Winter if I have a boiler issue.  I got a quote of $4.05 per gallon this morning, down from $4.20 in April.  But my oil company won't speculate where the fuel oil price is going over the summer months.  They do have a 12 month price cap plan where you are guaranteed a ceiling price for a year, provided you PAY for an additional insurance fee to cover their costs should their acquisition price exceed the guaranteed cap price.  Like DougM......weather-wise I am in that precious period during the year when no heat (heating oil) is needed and the daytime high temperatures do not require air conditioning (electricity), yet.

Gasoline prices locally here have flattened out at an available $3.59/gallon for regular 87 unleaded.  That is a far cry from where they were a year ago at this time when the prices were $1.06 a gallon lower.  Bang Head  JimmyT will have to keep his new (thirstier in a good way) 2007 Mustang GT garaged a bit this Summer.  That, or hitch rides with 96PGT.  Whistling

I have no more wiggle room for reducing our gasoline consumption and the associated expense.

I am employing every fuel saving tip I can, including using the car in the fleet with the best fuel mileage when I can and cutting down/consolidating trips out and about.  Filling up in the early morning, tire pressure (up 4 psi), driving the speed limits and coasting into off ramps, driving/anticipating the traffic lights, clean air intake filter, no excess weight in the car, no excessive idling time, etc.  My wife thinks I am an anal retentive moron.  Bang Head

I am exceeding the EPA estimated mileage figures for both my vehicles (city, highway, combined).  But the fact of the matter is that, short of eventually getting rid of the cars we are driving in exchange for something more economical, I am stuck.  Bang Head

Hi GUYZ,

I've been working on the railroad all the live long day!!!!!

........a great fire and awesome pressure all day long.   We didn't go below 90lbs. even with me driving which I took two tours today then did 3  tours of playing fireman.  Stay frosty and watch your topknot.......

laz57

Good mornin' ya'll from sunny Taxachusetts.  The rain and clouds have moved off the coast, and we are temporarily experiencing beautiful weather with temps in the high 60s for the day.

Laz......do you have to have a license of some sort to be an engineer on these tours?  I have the theme song of Gilligan's Island filling my head.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Brutus......that was great news on Char.  Yes, she is aggravated.  But aggravated wives are determined wives. Thumbs Up Big Smile

JimmyT.......I agree with all of the advice that has been posted here.  Another thing that dovetails off of what Dennis recommended......some car washes recycle their water which means that in the Winter your car is getting washed with water contaminated by all the corrosion-causing road chemicals used to treat ice and snow.  Ask the ones you frequent.  Also, if you can keep the Mustang GT garaged when not in use, that would be great, protecting it from the elements like sun, tree sap, and bird droppings.  Short of a garage or a carport, a quality car cover is a must.

MikeC.......you must be so happy that you get to play alongside your son.  How many of us can say we ever got to do that? Thumbs Up Bow

Chief......the reason that McDonald's does not serve grits is because they are concerned their establishments will be overrun each morning with masons, pavers, and dry wall contractors looking for some raw materials on their way to work.  Smile, Wink & Grin

HudsonJohn, RT, DougM, Dennis, and all..........depending upon whose news account you read about the crash, the Liberty Foundation (FL.) B17 had been recently serviced for a fuel leak.  A spotter plane and the pilot noted an engine fire (pilot's side).  The pilot turned around but decided the plane could not safely make it back to the Aurora IL airport, and he set it down in a field.  All 7 people on board made it out safely with one bumping his head on the way off the downed aircraft.

On a related note, the Collings Foundation out of Ohio (?) has a website and brings a B17 Flying fortress and a B24 Liberator to my hometown airport every September, along with other vintage WWII aircraft.  Last year a P51 Mustang joined their ranks.  Many moons ago when I took my son to see them we got to meet a WWII Air Corp veteran who had crewed on a European theater B17.  We and so many others got to shake his hand and thank him for his service.  He was in tears, memories I suppose.  And he didn't have the $ to go for a tour ride.  The Collings Foundation folks put him on the B17 for the next flight tour.  Thumbs Up

http://www.collingsfoundation.org/menu.htm

Chuck, SJ, and Laz.........re the Tribe and the Tigers, being on top of the division or close to it 40% + through the season is a good thing.  Better yet, if the Yankees don't qualify for the AL Wild card for the playoffs.  Laugh

8N........I read somewhere that walking is good PT for knee replacement patients.  If you truly loved your wife you would let her do the lawn mowing.  Whistling

Game 7 for the Stanley Cup and all of the marbles on tap for tonight.  The Boston Bruins CAN DO THIS!!!!!!!! Thumbs Up

Later, gang.

Jack.

Aloha. Sending rain and cold your way SJ. You can thank me later. Wink
Ran the trains last night. Thomas has started noisily 'slipping' - sounds horrible when it happens like all his gears just stripped - I think it's a combination of the elevation changes on the layout and pulling too heavy a train - I'm not going to ask him to pull more than Annie and Clarabell for the time being.

Biopsy on Char's rash came back and it's not graft versus host disease.  OTOH, it's either rosacea or something else - derma.  So, we'll find out how to fight this now.  Good news immunity wise, but it did upset her that she has yet another thing to worry about.

Good morning all,

It is stormy in SE Indiana today.  Some more good news.  Lucas is now officially on my soccer team this summer.  It has taken a while to get this done, and our first game tonight will probably be postponed, but it will be nice when we do finally get on the field together.  I have to admit I have been MIA the past few weeks here.  I have been posting, but not really taking the time to be actively involved.  Perhaps things will start to settle down, and hopefully after the first of July, I can concentrate again on the important things in life, such as soccer.....and well, there is soccer, and of course, we can always talk about....soccer.   Oh, and INDYCAR racing as well as long as Team Red does not win.   I had the regualr fare on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL after the game.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Morning all.  Slept late again.  Sunny and cooler than last week.  Say rain is coming.  Hope so.  Planning on installing shelves in other side of walk-thru closet in trainroom.  Got clothes out and now room for shelves to hold more train engines.  Try to dust things off from the last construction project.  Trains and rooms have been ignored.

We do not go to McDonalds anymore.  They offer oatmeal.  We only go to BoJangles.  They offer SOUTHERN style grits.

Have a great day.

Good Morning,

Beautiful morning, rain ended, humidity low temps in the 70's.

It is a shame about the Liberty Belle. We had a couple of B-17's at Miller Airpark a few years back for tours. Very interesting but erie for me. My uncle Danny was killled in one during WW2. I actually got cold chills min 90 degree heat when I went into the belly turret. He was a belly turret gunner.

Laz, Pioneer Tunnel may be a trip for me this summer. What days will you be there. Like to meet you.

Everyone have a great day,

John

Laz - way to go on that 0-4-0!  SOunds like a lot of fun, but work man!  How about some pics again this year?

Brent - big congrats to you and the Q!  Wow - where does the time go?!  Once the baby is here, you guys will really see how fast time can fly past us!

Too bad about the plane and the blimp!

Got a train stuff catalog with a model of Stephenson's Rocket, but it's about 170 and with motor 370, plus it's G gauge.  If it was in O gauge with motor it would be really cool!  Wish Lionel would put that out too Smile

Nice chat with the guys, then finished watching Ask a Policeman with Will Hays.  Good old funny movie - a lot like Abbott and Costello, but from England.  Lots of old jokes and slapstick from the 1940s.  I got a whole set of his movies recently from Amazon UK, but have to watch them on one player or on the computer due to different formats.  Exchange rate is great right now, FYI.

No leaks in the new plumbing except I didn't get the screw-on valve tight enough.  I took it off, added some teflon tape, put it back on and turned the water back on.  It seems to be fixed!  Every step is a step closer to my layout :)

TARDIS is ready, so let's hit it!

Dennis, the B-17 was the Liberty Belle - owned I think by a Liberty Foundation. They were giving rides in the area - along with a 2 seat P-40.  Buckeye, was that the Goodyear Blimp that crashed in Germany?

Dennis I believe earlier on yahoo news it was saying they believed the plane was owned by some company out of FL. but had not gotten a response back from them confirming it. It is great the crew got out safely but a shame for the lost.

Evening all not a lot going on here. just thought i would stop in and see how all are doing.

Good evening guys.  Long day, but finally home.  I did not read the story about the car wreck, but saw Chief's follow up and Brent's wise words.  Brent, you are on target with that post.  I would add that we have all made poor decisions at some point in life.  Just that most of us have gotten away with them.  Thank God we made it this far.  I pray for discernment every day.  With regard to the driver being young, I had posted several weeks ago about a mother who turned in front of a tractor trailer and it killed her pregnant daughter.  I think that most of us put away the attitudes and thoughts of invincibility that we had when we were younger and make better decisions based on life's experience.

Jim, I agree with the others regarding the undercoating.  You would be better off having it detailed at a place that washes the underside too every so often just to keep it clean.  Keeping it out of the weather will be a big help too.

Well, our house is at the 10 year old mark.  Had a contractor from church come by to check things out.  Looks like we are going to need about $7000.00 worth of repairs, caulk, painting, etc.  While not that much, it is still money I would rather spend on fun things.  It could have been much worse.

Doug, I read that article on the B-17.  Sad.  Was it one of the Confederate Air Force pieces?  They are based out of Texas and bring a lot of vintage planes to local air shows.  I have not seen an article or news report that identifies who's plane it was.  I think the crew did a remarkable job to bring her in and save the crew.

Hope each of you has a blessed night.
Dennis

Hi GUYZ,

I've been working on the railroad all the live long day!!!!!

Yepper started today at the PIONEER TUNNEL and had a GREAT DAY running the Vulcan 0-4-0 saddle antracite fire steam Lokie.  It was AWESOME getting her ready for the day tours.  Doing something a little different before starting our new fire for the day and that is doing a Blow down of the engine to get all the old pressure out.  Seems like a good idear now and helped give a great fire and awesome pressure all day long.   We didn't go below 90lbs. even with me driving which I took two tours today then did 3  tours of playing fireman.  I really do enjoy this voluntary job and hope next year to get hired on a part time basis.  Great bunch o GUYZ to work with, we all have fun and like to raz each other and sometimes the paying customers.  I will be working every Tuesday and maybe at the end o summer Tuesday and Wednesdays?

Stay frosty and watch your topknot,

Mornin' Fellas.

Been thinking alot about the car wreck... what I came up with is this.

No one understands why these things happen. No one knows what took place in the boy's life prior to that fateful evening. His father probably felt that he raised his son well enough to know not to do something like that. No on knows what was going on inside the car either. Were the others prodding him on? Were they telling him to slow down? We'll never know. We stand on the sidelines making assumptions based on our upbringing, our past experiences, etc, we we simply don't know what really happened. Is the father to blame for purchasing the car? No. Is the Law to blame for allowing young drivers to haul young passengers without someone over the age of 21 in the car? No. A poor decision was made and that is all that needs to be said. No matter what we show our kids, tell our kids, it is up to them to make the wise decisions in their lives, some learn, some don't, it is how it has always been and will continue to be till end of our race.

Amen, Brent.  A poor decision.  Beyond that all is speculation.  Parents can give 100%, and sometimes that just is not enough.  I've been thinking about this tragedy too and discussed it with my wife.  With two kids, we ourselves could have been those parents and families.

I wish to be the first to wish you and your better half a hearty congratulations of your upcoming 5th anniversary.  Hope you spoil her rotten!

Jack.

Mornin' Chief:    Just purchased a  J.C. madison passenger set from 2000.  It's a Lionel set, item #6-29066.  All cartons were sealed and unblemished. Upon applying power to lighted cars a weird buzzing noise started. Carefully removed shell, then e-board to find noise, not coming from e-board. Further poking around and seems 6 wheel trucks are the culprit.  Here's the weird part, applying full power with modern ZW ( 17. 6 volts) noise goes away. Using minimal power (coventional mode)  noise is really annoying. Something is viabrating in the truck assembly.  Don't want to look further until I get some guidance from the experts.       Thanks for your interest.     later.

This sounds like a Roy thingy.  Designed to run on command [full power]????  Sent Roy an email.

Good morning all,  PT session this morning at 10:00AM.

D.Baker, Congratulations on kicking the habit.  Keep up the good work.  I quit 3 and a half years ago and like you, it seems like I started falling apart.  However, if I had not quit I might not be around now. Regarding dental problems.  It's a given that they always occur on the weekend.  Never fails!

Doug,  I know the drill about flying with oxygen.  American will allow me to use my portable oxygen concentrator provided I bring enough battery power.  They want three for my model for cross country.  Medicare only covers one.  The extra ones cost $350 each but I think the airline will rent them to you for $50 per week.  In addition, you need a letter from your doctor which is good for one year and you must show up early for security check.  The airline wants plenty of notice for flying so that almost rules out emergency flights when you don't have waiting time.  I had to forgo a funeral back East for this reason.  If anyone has a better solution, I'm all ears.

Ray

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Overcast and Cool Taxachusetts,

I've got about 11 pages of Pot reading to catch up on.

JimmyT, sweet ride, low miles to boot!  Dennis, glad you had a fun and safe trip to Lost Wages.  DougM.....that B17 is toast, what a shame, irreplaceable, and it went down within 50 miles of your place.  I read where they suspected a fuel leak that caused the fire when the Flying Fortress was airborne.  Bruins refuse to quit (game 7 next) and the Red Sox, despite injuries, are ahead of the Yankees.  Smile, Wink & Grin  RaySP.....hope all is going well with PT.  Chief Thumbs Up Bow  SJ and Chuck.....the Tigers and the Indians may be slugging it out until the playoffs.

Jack.

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

Thanks for your interest.     later.
