Good morning guys.  It is a beautiful day outside.  Went out early to turn on well.  I will check the irrigation a little later.  So far, the feed piping seems to be holding.

Brutus, great news on Char.  Pray for her continued success.  With regard to the Coolpix, I have not owned or used one, but it is a good make.  I would suggest going to both Amazon.com and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ to check their reviews and pricing.  Also, you can see any accessories that may augment the photo experience for Char.

Was watching the morning news today....they had a story on some of Ronald Reagan's cards and quotes that were found in a box.  Reminded me of when I got to see him in NJ back in the mid 80's.  Not getting political, but I liked Reagan.  He could certainly inspire.

Now, the news is saying that Al-Qaeda has just put out a statement stating that Usama Bin Laden is dead.  Now if we can convince a few more terrorist to join him....  would be a good thing.

We have our daughter's tap and ballet dress rehearsal tomorrow.  MIL is coming to see it.  I have to do some prep here at the house, so I had better get to it or I will be in trouble with SWMBO.  Have a blessed day.

Hello all,

Think I'll have a quick cup this morning.

Chief,  Your mention of the National Day of Prayer is the only one I heard. Sad

On tire pressure. I always run mine at the maximum PSI the tire is rated for. The last tires I bought for Mrs' S10 blazer were rate for 40k miles. At 50k plus they still still had enough tread to pass the PA state inspection. I replaced them anyway because we were heading in to the winter driving season. When I bought them they were the most aggressive all-season tire I could find. They did excellent in snow. It went better in 2WD than my Company vehicle did in 4WD. Even the previous winter when the the tires should have been replaced.

Relatively dry weather predicted for this weekend. Going to try to get some grass cut. I did finally get the pasture fence gone over so I can let the cows out of the barnyard and quit feeding them hay.

Family get together at Mom's house on Sunday. I'll supply a big bucket of KFC with all the sides. Mrs'  favorite and we avoid all the restaurant congestion. (& I don't have to cook)

No time for trains. My Gilbert HO clock did arrive. It is nicer than I hoped for.

Prayers for those in need

Good Morning,

A cool 30 @ 4:45 this morning. I had to look twice. May or December?

No trains yesterday, just relaxed and an early bed time after the ASE Recerts.

Brutus, Great news about Char.

On the gas front, Regular dropped $.04 to $3.79 - $3.83 on Rt.9 by me.

Thoughts and Prayers for all in need.

Have a great day.

Good morning all,

IIARDISEI with temps in the 60s.  I mowed the entire yard that was above water all at once for the first time this year.  Work was busy.  I had the regular fare on the dining car for breakfast.  I see where some one clued the "Donald" in at IMS and now we will have a more appropriate driver to pace the 100th anniversary of the Indy 500.  TBIL later tonight and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Hey guys, turned out to be a nice day in Saint Louis except for a short heavy rain downtown today.  Wife is doing really well and is now working 30 hours a week and cashed out a lot of her leave she had donated to her.  She had to do it, so that she can start earning leave each payday.  So, we got a really big paycheck last Friday Thumbs Up  This is good as she still wants a camera for her birthday, which was a month ago!  Any of you guys have or have you tried a Coolpix camera?

Doug - sounds like a great find, man - can't wait to see some pix or a video of it on your layout Thumbs Up  BUT - it's not your BD yet!

Off tomorrow as the HVAC guy is coming to check and clean our system.  Working 4 hours of OT on Saturday.  I need to make a run to the store tomorrow morning while wife is at work and get her some Mother's Day goodies from the kids and I.  Also something from Chewy Laugh

TARDIS is ready so let's hit it guys.  We'll get Banilla on the way!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Mostly cloudy and about 60 today.  Some drizzle type rain too.

RI52 - Your tire wear sounds like it might be a combinaton of too much toe in and incorrect camber settings on the front end.  I had similar wear patterns on my pick up truck after an alignment.  Took it to a different shop for another reallignment - came out of that shop driving like a different truck.  Tire wear about dissapeared too.

Tire pressures are developed by the manufacturers as a compromise between vehicle noise, vibration & harshness, tire wear, and handling characteristics.  In general, going lower than reccomended pressures will soften the ride, reduce the tire's load carrying capacity, but it will cause the tires to run hotter - particularly when driven at high speeds.  Heat kills tires.  Going higher in pressure usually results in a harsher ride, improved ability to carry load, and slightly cooler running temperatures.  Excessively high tire pressures will reduce the tire's grip on the road, and change the handling characteristics of the car.

In my 30 years as an engineer for a tier 1 automotive supplier, I've been involved in a few of these developments.  Interesting stuff.  Those development drivers have an amazing awareness of the vehicle they are driving.  They can tell the difference in 1 or 2 psi tire pressure change on one tire!

Does my wife's 'social therapy' involve alchol?  Maybe, but with the stack of medication she is on, she steers clear of it.

All for now.

Evening to all,

I've had an interesting week at work.  The politics get to me sometimes. Wish we could just focus on what is best for kids and not get into the gamesmanship.  Hope tomorrow is better.

Have to find a home for the All Aboard set which is two boxes.  I really need to get out in the garage and do some clean up because my family with my 4 yo nephew are coming Sunday for Mother's day and I know he'll want to run some trains.

I did get the grass mowed and trimmed tonight. I'm feeling pretty tired so I might as well head to bed.

Take care,

Mitch

Good evening everyone.  Ended up being a long day as a case was added just as I was about to head home.  Finished that up, but I may need to go in about midnight to do rounds....we will see.  Regarding Whites, the Hess fuel depot near where I grew up had a whole fleet of them.  Was nice and the folks at Hess kept them super clean.

Doug, happy birthday!  Hope you get plenty of toys and a special dinner for your special day.

Got to watch some videos from ground zero from 9/11/01 that had not been released till now.  This was filmed by someone attached to FDNY.  While nothing bad is seen, still, it chokes you up watching the firefighters and S&R guys working the piles and searching with their dogs.  I was looking for some familiar faces, but didn't recognize any.  They did show the engine assignments from one of the houses and I saw someones name that I knew who died in the collapse of tower 1.  While it is a given that firefighting is a noble profession, think about the guys who went into that tower after seeing the other tower come down.  I have a DVD that was sent to me of photos taken by some PO and FD photographers from that day....sad.

I finished running the new piping to our irrigation system from the well.  I hope that when I try it out tomorrow, that no leaks and I can finally keep the peach trees watered on an automatic timer.  Been a bit hot to not be adding water.

Take care and have a good night.
Dennis

Good Evening,

Back from the ASE Recerts. I think that I did well. 3 recerts within 45 minutes, not bad.

Traindood, You are right, they both shared a lot of the same chassis parts. The gas engines I am not sure if they both had the Gold Comets or not. The Company that I work for had mostly Whites of that vintage. People commonly loop the 2 together. I can't let a good bust slide.

Doug, REO, stood for Ransom E. Oldsmobile, the founder of Oldsmobile and one of the founders of GM, who left and started REO.

One of my favorite trucks are Whites. I really like the round cab COE White 3000. We had a fleet of them when I started. They are hard to find. I also have a few White Super Mustangs on the layout as well. In tractor form, a 1957 Super Mustang was the first tractor trailer that I drove with a low boy attached. Yes, I have one of them also. I am planning on painting it grey and adding our company logo.

I thought this was a model railroad site. Never mind we are trying to get the vehicles period perfect. (yeah, right, who cares what year it really is as long as it looks good).

Early to bed,

John

Aloha all. Kinda of grey-y but high 50s - which is the best weather in a long while. Boy, I sure learn a lot on this thread - sometimes about trains too - now I've gotta try graham crackers with BBQ, raise the pressure in my tires and check out the 'ol Reo firetruck this weekend. I thought Reo was an early Oldsmobile. And as Jack said, I'm paying the highest price per gallon for gas in the nation: $4.45. Don't worry about missing out. I'm sure this price will come your way too. Big Smile

I had the best morning. Put down the weed-and-feed on the dandelions and mud. Then drove all the way to Woodstock Hobbies to buy myself birthday gifts. Got a pedestrian overpass kit from Atlas, a tube 'o glue - and an MTH operating coal tower - the AF-looking one I've always wanted. Paid full-retail but at least it was there. Now to wait until the big day to be able to play with it. Not sure where I'll put it on the layout. Yes

Prom tomorrow here too, Laz. Middle boy isn't going though - he's too consumed by the NHL playoffs. LOL.

Speaking of my teen, he has a school assignment that calls for him to interview someone who was in the service during 'a war' - not sure what that means exactly, I have to find that out, but if you know anyone, could you PM me?

Hey John:   Now that we have begun to split hairs, in deference to some of our "Pot" brethren, the Diamond T and Reo type chassis were most similar. It was a no brainer when they merged. Rather than get boring, Diamond Reo in colloquical lingo is meant to describe a class of vehicles that exemplifies a type of truck that was easily adapted to a variety of body styles. And yes I drove a custom job that was a stake body used for bales of waste paper.  So there!

Think good thoughts, do good deeds!

Lunch Time,

Nothing on the train front to report on. I have been reviewing for the 3 ASE recerts I have to take tonight.

Traindood, Time to bust on you. You learned on a 1956 Diamond Reo. It must have been custom built. Oops - Sign Diamond T and Reo merged in the mid 1960's. You must have meant a Diamond T. It could have been a Reo, but a lot of guys automatically call either a Diamond Reo, including the guy that does the web site for the Vol. Fire Co. He has our 1957 Reo and our 1958 Diamond T as Diamond "Rios". Whistling I worked on this stuff too long.

Tire Pressure: The manufacture's have the recomended pressures for a reason. That is why Tire Pressure Monitoring systems are mandatory now. Remember the Rash of SUV blow outs and roll overs. I would stay with the recomended pressures. SoapBox

Back to work.

Have a great day,

John

Mornin' fellas and gals:    Hey Jack;  The deal with the tires is this; you can buy expensive ones or not, the ozone in the air breaks down the compound that the tire is made from. Most last about 3 years or so, then the steel belts start to flex out of round and different wear patterns occur. Of course when they are new, the premium tires are better for a while. This way you can brag to your neighbors how great your tires are!  How do I know? I have been around heavy equipment one way or another most of my life.  Started drivin' about 14 yo. Learned on a 1956 Diamond Reo. Retired as a manager of heavy equipment after 35 years for nyc.  I currently have one suv and that' too much!   Only use synthetic oils in the car. Figure if it's good enough for M1A1 Abrams tanks and F-15's, it's good enough for me!   later.

Think good thoughts, do good deeds!

Good Mornin Ya'll from Overcast Taxachusetts,

It appears the rain has moved off the coast, it's 46 degrees, and we may have a sunny day on tap.  About 35 degrees colder than the boys on the Left Coast, but soon I'll be checking out the air conditioning, just to be ready.

RaySP.....cream of rice?  I'd rather have a root canal than eat that stuff.  No

traindood.......cornering at 90mph, me?  You have me confused with my wife.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Pat.....sounds to me that some of those Southern dishes need to be tried out on your cows first.  Thumbs Down

DougDG.......this year will be different, and you will be receiving your Halloween Lionel order early.  I called the powers that be at L, and they promised to get right on it. Whistling

SJ......glad you found that lost check in your shirt pocket.  Laundering money is a Federal offense.  Laugh  Re the road construction and planning things out.  The main State road from the North going into Salem MA has been in a state of teardown and reconstruction for 4 years.  Goes like this:  tear down road.  Repave.  Tear down road.  Repace sewers.  Repave.  Tear down road.  Add curbs and replace water lines.  Repave.  Tear down road.  Replace electrical.  Repave.  And the State is broke?  Duhhhhh!  The local businesses along that stretch have been hurt quite badly by this bungling as customers have given up trying to get there. SoapBox

RT.......German chocolate cake is one of the basic food groups and is actually good for you.  Just ask your "Mama." Dinner

Jon........animal patterns have changed around here.  The deer have moved off into the less urban areas North of me.  The groundhogs have taken up residence elsewhere.  The rabbits are thriving despite the influx of coyote.  The wild turkey and canadian geese have moved in.  And the chipmunks have become the nuisance de jour......annual and perennial flowers are toast.  Wife undeterred, insists we plant again.....and I need to lace the flowers with birth control drugs.

Dennis.....how does one combat poor judgement and sheer stupidity with folks behind the wheel of a vehicle?  My Dad taught me to drive and always warned me that defensive driving, the use of seatbelts, and anticipating the worst in folks in every scenario was the key to survival on the road.  He loved the phrase "dead right" when trying to explain to a sixteen year old (me) that being in the right and assuming others will do the right thing will still get you killed.

DougM.......the change in metro Chicago's Metra policy slowing the commuter trains down from 79mph to 55mph serves a useful purpose.  It make the fatalities easier to identify.  Yet another case of folks getting ejected from the vehicle because they were not belted.  If seatbelts work for race car drivers in 200+mph crashes....never mind. Bang Head

AF Ray.......Regular 87 now at $3.99 here.  DougM in Illinois at least $.40 per gallon higher, due to the perfect storm of taxes and transport.  On my road trip I found gas was much cheaper right over the border in Indiana.

RaySP......hope that MRI today reveals the source of your knee issue so you can finally get that squared away.  Angel

Chief.......I am placing my order with you for free tomatoes early this year.  Prices here just under $3.00 a pound for what tastes like and has the consistency of red major league baseballs. Bang Head

LAZ/Chuck.......apparently Juan Valdez and his mule got a raise, explaining the ridiculous coffee prices.  Your $9.00 per downsized container is $11 on sale here.  Looks like Beer may soon be a financially viable morning beverage, though I don't think it will taste good on the Cheerios.  Bang Head

LAZ......the number of folks in these here parts looking for homes for their beloved dogs because they lost their homes is frightening.

JimmyT......prayers for a solid interview!!!!  When is it?  Angel

Mitch......cheer up.  It could be worse.  You could be smack dab in the middle of the school construction project you were saddled with just a couple of years back. Wink

MikeC........I am in strong agreement with you.  Even folks who are not fans of motorsport sit in in the stands with their jaws hitting the ground in awe as those open wheeled Indy cars come flying off of turn four at the Speedway and scream down the front straight at 230mph, wheel to wheel.  TV doesn't come close to doing the Indy 500 justice.

SubmmBob.....glad to hear the project is progressing nicely.  You need some rest!!  Zzz

8N.......re your wifey's "social therapy," hope she didn't find your train stash hidden in the rafters in the basement and blow it all on a game of five card stud.  Smile, Wink & Grin

JimSP......let us know when your funeral arrangements are complete.  We'll need to make transportation arrangements once your wife opens the box with a "circus train" inside on Mothers' day.  Laugh

Gotta run.  Later, gang.

Jack -- forget about "recommended" tire pressures, they are only concerned about a comfy ride, frustrating to say the least.  1)  ALWAYS  check tires cold;  2) rotate more often; 3) find an independent shop owner who has the best alignment machine in town.

Chief--no need to hunt raccoons any more, I have visitors every night -- what I need are Seals Team 6 to come in and cull the herd of raccoons and deer Thumbs Up

Jon.....thanks.  That is what I figured, a too-low manufacturer's recommended tire pressure, for the soft ride only.  I did increase the psi on all four corners from the F/R recommended 30/32 to 32/34 about 5K miles ago.  I might bump the pressure another psi unless the fairer sex jumps in and starts complaining.

I use a tire shop that has the Hunter Force balancers.  I have been checking the tires cold every three weeks as you recommend.  But in my case, the tires cannot be rotated as the SRX uses offset tire sizes.  Great for turn-in, but this SRX (a crossover) is not the vehicle that needs that.   The fronts are P235-60-18 and the rears P245-55-18, with the rear wheels .5 inches wider.

I could rotate the tires side to side in the front by having them dismounted and remounted on the opposite side wheel for the time being.  What I should have done is "jack" the tire pressures 2 or 3 psi on all four corners when I first noticed the outer edge wear on both fronts, and just the fronts.  The rears are wearing much more slowly as expected, and are wearing dead even.

Looks like I'll be replacing the fronts only with the same Michelins (to match) and then down the road getting those 4 wearing out at the same time.  These Michelin tires that came on the car are great but far too pricey; and I expect that eventually I'll be switching to a more reasonably priced tire brand to my liking.

Thanks Jon for your help.  I am not very mechanically inclined and need all of the help and advice I can get.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a sunny and clear, cold, 34 degrees. Going up to a sunny 60 today.

Today is an easy day. I have a few chores to do and some paperwork. Then, I can relax. Haven't gotten my new reefer from Marty yet.

Indians lost last night. 3-1. Still 20 & 9, which is pretty good.

Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Thursday.

Morning guys.  getting ready for another fun day of call.  With regard to the loss of the young lady, I have seen far too many folks pass.  It is too easy to become jaded in our attempts to not let it affect you too much.  On that note, I really have no desire to see the UBL photos, but I can understand how others may wish to see it.

Got the Lionel catalogs in the mail yesterday from The Train-Station.  I see a few items I'd like to have.  Mostly, I am looking at scenery items, but may need to check out some of the newest offerings in motive power, etc....but my wife says I have enough!Whistling

Hope to check in later.
God Bless,
Dennis
