Good Mornin' Y'all From The Waterlogged State Of Taxachusetts,

Rather than do a lot of redundant typing, see my previous 10 posts for the weather report here.  Bang Head

Traindood.....re your property tax appeal, I'd be tempted to pursue it even if it means a road trip to Trenton and back.  What my FIL discovered when he did the same was not surprising.  He found out that the same-aged guy living directly across the street from him in his subdivision with the exact same house with the exact same additional touches on the exact same shaped/sized lot was paying about 25% less in property taxes.  Turns out there was some chicanery going on.  Rather than fight his appeal, the town caved instantly when he presented his comps.  His take was that there was a lot of this "special treatment" going on, depending on whom you knew, and they needed to shut him up and send him on his way satisfied. Whistling  He saved a lot of $ year after year taking this approach while "those who did not ask did not receive."

Chuck and SJ.......perhaps the two of you could make a friendly wager over the Indians and Tigers final W-L records this season.  The loser has to eat grits for breakfast for a month.  Smile, Wink & Grin  Chuck, hope you are enjoying your Cheerios car.

RaySP.......that is really good news on the knee.  Since physical therapy begins next week, you need to get your camera ready to take pictures of your "coaches."  Chuck did and posted a picture or two on the POT.  Check with him about his strategies and tactics.  Whistling

By the way, maybe your neighbor next door can get a "number of allowed dogs" exemption from the city by starting a business selling his services to the city, having his dogs patrol the city's public grounds, golf courses, and corporations with ponds.....after teaching his dogs to patrol the ponds to eradicate the geese.  Collies are herding dogs, perfect.  He'd get a good tan sitting all day on a lawn chair, catching up on his reading, while his dogs do their thing.  Maybe even get a free golf membership to an exclusive club.  Laugh

DougDG and HudsonJohn......up here in the Northeast USA the Canadian Geese migration patterns have been altered significantly, both in distance (reduced) and in time (more months here versus further South).  Since protection, the geese have learned it is not necessary to pack their bags and do an extended and more lengthy migration.  The food is plentiful here locally with a limited anount of "predators" and the time they need to spend in the more moderate Winter climates a couple of hundred miles to the South is less.  Guess they don't "cotton to Southerners."  Whistling

HudsonJohn........I hear ya loud and clear.  While face-to-face meetings can be a valuable form of team communication (and provide the higher-ups with a sense of comfort or importance), they can be a terrible time and productivity waster when overdone, especially when not kept on topic.  As in everything, balance is the order of the day.

Chief.......thank you for the video of the knucklehead kid driving the black Firebird past the State trooper and into the bridge abutment at 100mph.  But your comment about stupid Nawtheners in Ohio was misguided.  Smokey and the Bandit was about Southerners driving black Firebirds at 100mph past State troopers in a suicidal fashion.  Whistling  I liked HudsonJohn's interpretation of your TV station's WRAL call letters.  Could also stand for "Weather Reports Always Lousy."

Joe........the little ones occasionally need some propping up, perspective, and to learn that good things only come with hard work.  Been through that with my boy, both in school and athletics.  We are now having similar issues with our 7 year old granddaughter.  I can appreciate he feels devastated about a bad night at the plate and feels like it is the end of the world.  My dog trainer got an idea about t-shirts because she saw far too many adults expecting instant gratification handling their dogs.  She got tired of hearing all of the constant whining.  The t-shirts are black with large yellow letters on the back:  "SHUT UP AND TRAIN."  Big Smile

RT.......Sloppy Joes, now that is something we haven't had for a while.  Don't know why.  We love them, and they are fast and easy to prepare.  Thanks for the idea.  Need to borrow daughter's deep fryer to make up some french fries to go with them.  Dinner

Brutus.....overall continued good news from the Docs on Char's progress.  I didn't think she could get back in the groove so quickly.  She is a trooper.  You are truly blessed.  Continued prayers that HE/SHE and you keep the germies away. Bow Angel

Dennis........waking up at 03:00 and then staying up?  That would do me in for a couple of days.

8N......please send some of that sunshine my way.  Forgot what it looks like around here, and we have several more days of showers, drizzle, and steady rain with temps in the 50s on tap.  Looks like I'll be emulating the local landscapers here who mow regardless of the weather.  Bang Head  I'm in one of those "keeping up with the Joneses" situations.  I am surrounded by about 6 homes where the folks have lawn irrigation systems, chemical lawn services, and use landscapers.  Their landscaping always looks perfect while my wife looks at me and observes "Our place looks like the Beverly Hillbillies' former house."  Bang Head

LAZ.......I need to find an amazing video that was shared with my wife and I by one of the guys with whom we used to train (dogs).  His dog was very difficult in so many different ways, but he nonetheless got some amazing results from training.  His video is of "extreme heeling off-leash."  He is on his mountain bike, racing through the woods and over the trails and jumps with his dog running at full speed right next to him.  His wife positioned herself at various points along the trail and took about 5 minutes of the two passing her at speed, in perfect harmony.  Thumbs Up

Fife.......don't know about things down your way, but there are so many folks up here who either anchor just off shore or just enjoy their yatchets tied up to the pier or their bouy.  Gas prices have put a real dent in things.  On the positive side, I pointed out to my wife the other day that it seems so many more folks have put their boats in the water far earlier this year than in previous years.  The indomitable American spirit.

DougM.......my FIL who lives about 30 miles South and West of you says his A/C has gotten a real workout already this year.  You have already had several days in the 90s!!!!!!!

JimmyT.......I wasn't trying to blow sunshine up your PGT tailpipe.  My wife has spent her entire career in HR and currently does recruiting for her company.  You are in a good place with this one.  Making the short list of a zillion applicants is something to be proud of, no matter how it works out.  Get that followup letter out.  And don't be surprised if you have to hurry up and wait.  Prayers continue you nail this one down.  Angel

Gotta run.  Later, gang.

Jack

RockIsland - It's been a wet and wild April all along the coast.  I took advantage of the earlier good weather (late March-early April) to prep.  Lots of boats still up on the hard.  I only need the Yanmar (1/3 gallon an hour) to maneuver through our channel, then the "laundry" goes up.

Good morning all,

Jack, don't think the neighbor has time to sit and watch collies as he is a fire fighter.  However, he is home off and on the way they work.  As for pictures at therapy sessions, not counting on any lookers at the place where I am going.  My wife went there some time ago so I know.

Sad news today.  Close friend's mother passed away.  She was 86.  Funeral on Friday.  Did not know her very well but had met her on a few occasions.  Will go to service if I'm able for his sake.  I think I did too much walking on my bad knee yesterday.  Went to super market and it's sore today.  Doctor says I can start taking showers now when I feel like it.  Been taking bird baths for a few days to keep dressing dry on knee.  Doctor says tape will hold if you don't soak it with soapy water or rub it.

Our former guvonator out here put his foot in his mouth this week with shocking news about his extra marital child from 10 years ago.  He thinks he will get a free pass and keep on doing what he does.  Glad he isn't depending on me for a living.  My opinion of him has been consistant.  I thought he was a jerk before this news and now I still think he is a jerk so nothing has changed.

Later,

Ray

Afternoon fellas and gals:    Rain on and off here, heavy at times. Ain't got much to do 'cept brood about the tax appeal.   Grumpy    More info: 63% of my tax bill goes to schools. Since my youngest is almost 40 yo, irks me all the more.  Bang Head Wifey and I are considering goin' to Trenton anyway. May not git my taxes lowered but i'll give 'em what for!     SoapBox     later.

Think good thoughts, do good deeds!

Whatever you guys did, it worked.Bow  I got the call while I was on break today.  I have to go for drug/medical testing tomorrow, then it should be good to go.Thumbs Up  Thanks again for the support through this one.

I got the 313 yesterday, and it worked right out of the box.Surprise  The engineers at Lionel outdid themselves with the 313.  Very impressive piece.  After that test, I took the cover off the gearbox and removed and replaced the long dead Lionel Lubricant with Green Grease.  It works well, but the counterbalancing spring could probably use some adjustment.

I got the grass cut but not trimmed. Banilla is ready for the thingy.

As for the bet with Chuck, I'd rather drink out of a toilet than eat grits....S.J.

Starting to pay for yesterday's weather - clouded up, started to drizzle.  Forcast for the next few days does not look much better either.

Jim - congratulations on the job.

Did some research last night and found part numbers for a fan driven smoke unit.  Planning on putting one in my recently acquired EMD generator car.  Anybody know if there was a real life prototype for this car?  My first pass through the internet search did not turn up anything useful.

All for now.

Chuck - just glad you didn't get a Grits-eos boxcar!  Thumbs Up

JIM - EXCELLENT!  So glad you finally got the job, man!

Thanks guys - sometimes it seems like she has made incredible progress, but then we will get a reminder.  One good thing is that apparently they kicked that CDIF stuff with the last go-round on the antibiotics.

Sad news today is that two of my sisters have had to have their dogs put down this week.  Both are devastated.  One brother-in-law has a heart cath tomorrow, but we're hoping for good-ish news.

I got a new locomotive and caboose - GP30 Chessie with tmcc and a scale caboose from a set breakup.  Got a really good deal on them, too Thumbs Up  First thing I did was break off some kind of little piece on the handrail of the caboose.  It's some kind of signal thing - flat piece.  I'll glue it back on - no big deal.  Engine looks great.

Son is trying to punish us for grounding him, but we have superior "evil" skills.  He shall not prevail Laugh

TARDIS is ready!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good evening all,

I had a busy day at work and then we had Bible study tonight at church.  It was our last week to meet for Bible studies until the fall.  With folks going on vacations for the summer, we don't have as many people around for Wednesday night studies.  We had some tornado warnings this afternoon but nothing developed near the base.  Those warnings do scare our son a bit.

Bob – I saw eight trains (shot video of six) pass through in less than two hours.  All were headed by CSX locos, but as you stated, the freight was as varied as anything I’ve ever seen.

Hudson John – I think he doesn’t concentrate as much sometimes.  Last week he hit like an All-Star.

Jack – Amazingly he shrugs a weak outing off very easily.  He knows he needs to work harder and focus more.  All I ask is that he does his best and has fun – so far he is doing that.

SP Ray – I’m sorry for your loss.  Don’t overdue with your knee.

Jim Probe – Congratulations!  Your perseverance paid off.

Good night,

Joe

Rainy, Dreary Day again.

Doug, Thanks for sharing Ivor. Never saw it before.

Fife, Nothing gets past you. I missed "budjet". Enjoy the yachtet.

Traindood, Jack: Do you think there is chicanery with the property taxes in Jersey? Whistling

Jim: Congrats and Good Luck with the job. You Did It.

Brutus: Prayers for Char's continued improvement and good luck with your son.

Chief: I listen to a radio station at work from NY, WCBS FM. The morning DJ, Dan Taylor, is always teasing the weatherman, "Mr. G" on his forecasts when he is wrong. They even have songs about him. My favorite is the one that is a take off of the theme song from Mr. Ed.

Joe, Remember he is a kid and he is enjoying himself.

Have a Great Day,

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cloudy 52 degrees. Misty rain. Going up to 67 today with a chance of thundershowers.

Today is an easy day. I plan on relaxing in the train room, later. Have a few chores to do and some paperwork. Then, of course, an afternoon nap.

Indians lost to White Sox last night. 1 to 0.

Dining car is here with the usual for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Thursday. Stay dry.

Mornin' Fellas.

Been a very busy almost two weeks around here. Last Monday we made a day trip to FL concerning the adoption. The Birth Mother was very nice and it was very helpful to meet her and her family. TheQ and I spent last Saturday going and registering for shower gifts... my feet are STILL sore - I tell you it was harder on my feet than a FULL day at York! Think I need new walking shoes. Sad

Looks like we're finally rolling out a new update to the application at work. This will solve a bunch of problems we've been experiencing and will prevent the users from entering bad data... hopefully the ill-informed questions will stop as well?

JimT - Big CONGA!!!! on the job. Now you have time to focus on more colorful objectives. Whistling

I've been working on a bathroom remodel for the past few weeks. Two weeks ago I laid the new tile floor, last weekend the floor was grouted and I started working on tiling the tub/shower - should finish that this weekend. When I test fitted the vanity I found that the walls don't form 90 degree corners... really? Builders take this little pride in their work? I can gaurantee when we build the next house there are going to be a lot of measurements taken. I will NOT stand for this. So when I put the vanity in I have clearance problems with a drawer and the cold water shutoff valve. Also need to get a new drain adapter, stop at Lowes during Lunch today. Then tonight I can install the last section of baseboard, silcone the vanity top to the base, install the drain, silicone the backsplash to the vanity top and wall, reposition the mirror (for the third time Bang Head), install the hand towel ring, and install the toilet paper holder. Not sure if I will install the toilet tonight. It gets a bit cramped in the bathroom with the toilet in place and could make tiling and grouting the tub/shower a pain... we'll see. BUT the bathroom should be done on Sunday!

Next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend... I really hope I have some time to get down to the train room and finish the rework, if not finish I definitely want to make significant progress. Really want to get that done by the end of June so I can start cleaning up the basement and going through the rolling stock, engines, accessories, etc - determine what I MUST keep, what I would like to keep, and what I can do without. Then either take what I can do without down to the LTS and get it put on consignment or post on Choo-Choo. Also need to get the bins organized so I know what is in each one and consolidate some stuff. Goal is to get the train stuff out of the main basement and under the layout.

Hope everyone is doing well and Angel for those in need.

BTW - Stephen Hawking is an idiot.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Cold and Gloomy Taxachusetts,

Somebody stole the sun and won't return it.  Must be youse guys on the Left Coast, with SubmmBob stopping any sunshine that makes it over the mountains. Was 44 this AM, don't think we will break 60 today.  Like Laz, we had heavy overnight rains.  Taxachusetts moronic drivers headlined the news this morning.  To them, heavy fog (can't see) + water on the highways (risk of hydroplaning) + commuter traffic (more morons challenging each other) = must drive faster (an opportunity to cause even more carnage on the roads).

SHOCK!!!!!  LOCAL GASOLINE PRICES DROPPED 2.6% or 10 CENTS A GALLON IN THE PAST WEEK TO $3.85 PER GALLON (87).  I must have been mistaken when I thought I observed that the price of oil dropped 12% in a day a few weeks back.  Why do consumers have to take it up the caboose faster than you can blink WHEN OIL PRICES RISE, but it takes months for the prices to recede.......and they seldom if ever get back to the same previous lower prices?  My local mechanic showed me what he is paying for a gallon of fuel, so he isn't reaping any benefit from this.  It is high time the slugs on Capitol Hill stop pontificating and actually DO something, earn their keep, follow the money trail, and start laying the wood.  SoapBox

Roy......there is a truly sad story that has headlined our local news for days, too close to my domicile for comfort.  Mother drives up to the Northeast from Texas for reasons not yet clear.  After staying in a beach town motel for days, murders her 6 year old son in NH, dumps his body in Maine, and is captured in MA.  Her family is clueless.  Sometimes people cry out for help, but no one listens, even family.  Gets me to thinking sometimes it is appropriate to NOT mind ones' own business.

Fife.....my take on this phenomena of folks up my way getting their yatchets in the water earlier this year is this:  extreme cabin fever from the past Winter, driving a desire to get in more boat time this season.  At dog training last night one woman defiantly declared she already opened her swimming pool and has the heater running!!!  With daytime ambient temps in the 50s, talk about major "shrinkage."  Whistling

RaySP.......prayers for your frind's Mom who passed away.  I remember when my Dad passed away I dreaded the wake and the funeral.  It wasn't just the responsibilities of handling matters.  I wanted to escape, to contemplate things in private, to have time to mourn.  However, the throngs who showed up to pay their respects to my Dad at the W and the F boosted my spirits and helped get me through it.  I think your friend could use a friendly face about now.  Hope your knee can hold up and you can attend.

Brent.......you have my continued prayers that SuzieQ's and your long and arduous journey will finally be rewarded.  One thing is for certain.  There is no quit in you two, and we are all pulling for a most successful outcome.  In anticipation of your parenthood, we promise to provide you with all of the unwanted, inane, and misguided parenting advice you can handle.  Smile

traindood and HudsonJohn.......chicanery in local government with property taxes?  In NJ?  No way!!!!!  Next, you will try to convince me the Governator in CA. was unfaithful to his wife.  Whistling

JimmyT.....be very careful about what you say around those folks performing the requisite drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.  They may uncover your serious addiction to Mustang GTs.  Smile, Wink & Grin  According to my calculations, you have already resurrected your search. Thumbs Up

SJ......you're way out in front of me.  I can't even get a break in the rain to mow!!!!!!  I expect more of the same for at least two more days.  Sorry about last night.  My Boston Red Sox outswam your Tigers 1-0.

MikeC.....hope you are feeling better.  It must be a case of overexcitement with the qualifying for the Indy 500.  Wink

JimSP......is your camper gone for good?

Brutus......besides being evil to the core, you and Char are mean, nasty, and sadistic parents, grounding your poor innocent son for an academic indiscretion. Laugh  It is amazing how quickly the child is able to turn around a grounding when the stakes are high (Xbox priviledges withdrawn) and the powers that be haven't responded well to the "Take pity on me" routine.  Thumbs Up  Question is, how do you and Char keep a straight face when said son realizes he is hopelessly outnumbered?  Sorry to hear both of your sisters had to put their beloved dogs down.  My wifey got very depressed when we unexpectedly lost both of ours just three days apart around the holidays a couple of years back.  Prayers for your BIL's heart test. Angel

Joe......these are Kodak moments with your son, and you will cherish them always even though it is just a bad night at the plate.  When my son was in little league he took this kind of stuff quite seriously......until the next day. :D]

LAZ......Minnie must be in her glory with all of the rain, out for runs with you in a monsoon. Thumbs Up  What a difference the breed makes.  Last night my dog was walking around outside in the wet like he was stepping on broken glass and hot coals. Laugh

Chief.......how are da tomato plants lookin'?  What is the ETA for my delivery?  With all of that running back and forth to the lake house (Eagles' Nest), you must own an oil company and get your gasoline for $ .20 per gallon. Stick out tongue

Later, gang.  Stay dry.

Jack

Good morning all,

It is a comfortable 60 degrees right now, but the threat of some severe storms looms.  The wife went out this morning and picked up some donuts for breakfast - jelly filled donuts and coffee make for a great breakfast.

Hudson John - Having fun and being active are the most important parts of the game for his age.  However, when he grows up he wants to either be a MLB player or attend the Air Force Academy to become a fighter pilot, both of which require a great deal of hard work and practice.  The sooner he figures out what it will take to achieve either one of those goals, his chances of obtaining one of them will be greater.

Laz - You're almost finished, but just to rub it in, our kids are finished tomorrow.

Chuck - I believe the White Sox pitcher threw a complete game shutout.  He deserves a tip of the hat for that performance.

Jack - We are enjoying every bit of his baseball season.  We are very proud of him for doing his best and not overreacting (whining) when he has a down day - he knows it's not the end of the world.

I have plenty of work on my plate today so I should get back to it.

Good day,

Joe

80's and might rain this afternoon.

Meetings all day and then an industry dinner event here tonight. Ugh. Meetings all day tomorrow and more meetings all day Monday and Tuesday.

Have a great day all!

Regards, Roy

Lunch Time,

The Sun is Out. But for how long. A lot of localized flooding.

Brent, I wish you the best with the adoption process. Meeting the birth moter and family probably put everyone's mind at ease.

Joe, He is shooting for the top. It would be great if he did either. When my son was young he wanted to be a Lineman. I will never forget when he was in first grade. The first parent/teacher conference the teacher asked me what an LBH was. I explained that it was a bucket truck and what it did. She then told me that they where working outside and she told my son to pay attention in class and not the guys working on the wires. My son told her that they are not working on the wires, they are using an LBH to change a transformer. Smile, Wink & Grin

Back to work,

John

Roy,

Do you actually get anything accomplished at the meetings or is it just do more with less and I am sure that you can figure it out? I hate meetings.

John - they are trying to figure out why nothing is getting accomplished.

Mornin' All.

Finally in a decent frame of mind to where I can post w/o a very long string of expletives. At the last minute my sister was able to fly out for a visit which makes us very happy. However when we went to pick her up at the airport what a fiasco, the entire parking area for terminal 2 is closed and some of the traffic lanes for arrival/departure folks. But of course the "Valet Parking" option was still there taking up most of an entire lane, funny thing that there was nobody operating it and no cars ($34/day).  banghead]

All is ready and waiting for tomorrow, only decision remaining is what kind and where to get the doughnuts for breakfast.  Dinner

A really big CONGA for Jim T !

re: management meetings are sometimes only used to justify the position of some managers. Best part of the meetings was when they were over.

Ray, Go easy on the knee. The trains will be there when you are ready.

Joe, He has some high ambitions, but speaking as someone who's love of planes was earlier and stronger than trains the A.F.Academy would be about the ultimate. We are fortunate in that we have a few former flyboys in the club. One has flown most everything in the AF inventory at one time during his active duty years, and yet another who was a Top Gun instructor at one time.

I once had a boss who had a tendency to call all of his charges on the spur of the moment toward the end of a work day to schedule a staff meeting for that evening at 5:30PM.  His rationale?  He didn't want to cut into our 8:00AM-4:45PM productivity.

What he chose to conveniently ignore was that the rest of us actually had a life, a family, and responsibilities outside of work.  Apparently he didn't have much of that stuff or shoved it way down on the list of his priorities in life.  When he was politely asked to call these meetings earlier in the day, he graciously complied.  After that, these meetings were scheduled for the following morning at 7AM.  Bang Head

Jack

PS:  Did you ever notice at work that the list of "life-and-death" priorities which absolutely, positively must be achieved on schedule (and on budget) grows practically by the day?  The newer "life and death" priorities  come faster than the existing ones can be accomplished.  The staff cuts, hiring freezes, and salary freezes are ignored.  It is like standing under Niagara Falls with an umbrella.  No matter what, you are going to drown.

When you ask which life-and-death priority is more important than the other, or which one can be shelved for a while, you get a blank stare.

I have long since been convinced that far too often the management in Corporate America deliberately sets employees up for failure.  That management, gone astray in this fashion, can create more of a morale and productivity problem than any other single factor.

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

Been There Done That !!

Company I worked at the President would have his staff meeting on Wed, at 5:00pm, with all his direct reports.  There were 10 of us!  Meeting went until 1:00 am.   SAME SITUATION -- PRIORITIES WRONG!!

He came into my office one evening and asked if I would take a Red Eye to Boston, and we would set up a "good guy/bad guy" scenerio.  I was to be the bad guy.  Told him no, that that was not the way we should be conducting business.  AND, I already had plans for the evening.  He came right back and SAID.  Your priorities should be Company First, Family Second, You Third.  I responded with KNOW WAY, you have it exactly wrong!  Me First (otherwise no go to family), Family Second, Company Third.  His reply was I don't need you here then.  I said your right, packed my desk and walked out.   (Company closed about a year later.)  Don't know what happened to him.
