AF53 Dennis - Sorry for your loss. I do believe that some of the most wisest and important people we will ever know are our grandparents. I learned alot from my grandfather as he was almost a father figure to me after losing my dad at age 14. From the sounds of your last week or so you could use another vacation.

Ditto....My father died two months before I was born and my grandparents raised me. I have photos of me and my granddad at his well drilling rig. He was a well driller and when I attended college the easiest subject for me to understand was hydraulics and hydrology. Go figure!
Again Dennis, sorry about your families loss.

Not much going on today. Sable is now ready to roam the house and play as she wants. Just can't wait until all her furr grows in, prob a few months.
Mitch - Congrats on your victory. Those things can be alot of fun. Prayers for you friends granddaughter.
SJ - We used to make homemade bread with "The Bread Machine" I bought for the wife some 15 years ago. You could make any mix you want. One of our favorites was pepperoni or cheese bread. I'm gonna dig it out, thanks for the idea. PS, how was it?
Roy - That video was GREAT! Thanks!

Good evening everyone. Was a short day at work, but looks like we are going to be making up for things tomorrow. We have three hearts to do and one of the guys is on vacation, so it will be me doing two.
Thanks RT, got the delivery today. It is a very handsome engine. I am looking forward to getting her on the rails. It has TMCC and Railsounds 4.0. Winning bid was $106. The electronics alone are worth the cost.
Spanky, don't hold back....say what is on your mind! Yeah, I agree, this is all hogwash, they should have had a budget passed back in October. Personally, I think it should be the way it was originally, where people went to Washington for a short legislative session, and spent the majority of the time back home. Now, DC is a way of life for these folks.
Thanks for the kind thoughts regarding my grandmother. Dad told me that she often wondered why God was keeping her around so long. She had been in very good health up until she was 96. She had fallen and broke her hip, then a few other issues till now, two years later.
Well, time for bed. Hope everyone has a blessed night,Dennis

petfinder.com should turn up a collie rescue nearby. There's one in Virginia we have been looking at. Great site for finding dogs, cats, horses, fiddler crabs...

Never made 50. Well I ran trains, watched TV, took a nap and granny was home. Never did get to the mags that are stacking up. Oh my, a neighbor just brought us a hot loaf of home made bread. I stopped writing to eat some. Banilla will be ready for Brutus and the thingy..S.J.

Jack,
You wouldn't have to worry, I've got enough duplicates. Seroiusly though, just give me a shout if you'd want me to fix anything.
Brent,
No comment on the stealth thing. I was thinking Stealth + Boysenberry = Win, but never mind.
Pat.....those dogs in Roy's shared video have better table manners than either Buckeye or the Chief. Better looking too. Bet others have opinions on this.
Speaking of gas prices, DougM: here in my neck of the Taxachusetts. Regular $3.53. Midgrade $3.63. Premium $3.73. Diesel $4.03. The gas price you posted of $4.05 for regular is Chicago proper, not Crystal Lake, right?
RaySP.......sounds like your neighbor needs help/advice, despite his suspicions of who dropped the dime on him. He's losing his dogs and is bitter and sad. Wonder if he has a pc and knows he can find a breed-specific rescue that will care for the dogs until they can find a foster home and then a permanent home. Breed specific rescues usually keep a dog until it can be placed. If the authorities take his dogs when the hourglass expires, and they plunk his dogs in the Humane Society shelter, the dogs may get wacked/euthanized if the dogs cannot be placed right away.
Traindood......one hot dog and one beer would not tide me over until the National Anthem at a baseball game, let alone the whole game.

Good afternoon,
Wow, time sure flies. I haven't checked into the April pot until today and already 10 pages. Spent a few days in Rocky Gap, MD at a Lowrey Organ conference with Jean, she is the one who plays, I'm just a listener. Nice area but rainy most of the time.
Next week is York so will see some of you there.
Good morning all,
Dennis, condolences on the loss of your grandmother. Mine was wonderful to me and practically raised me. She passed on in 1979. I still miss her today.
Jack, haven't heard anything so far about the disposition of the three extra collies. I think you are right about him being in over his head. I know he loves them but can't find time to do them justice apparently. Will feel out the sitiuation if I get a chance and see what's happening but I hope it turns out OK for all concerned. When they first moved in they made a great effort to befriend all the neighbors but lately there seems to be a cooling off toward me. Maybe it's just my imagination or maybe he thinks I am the one who blew the whistle on the extra dogs. I assured him that I was not. If I had something to say I would say it to him, not the city.
More wet weather forcast for later this week. At least the drought has been declared over.
Been watching the rerun of Ken Burns' Civil War documentary this week. Looks better on my new TV. This year is the 150th anniversary of the begininng of the Civil war, April 1861. Watched some of the series about the Kennedy's also but the critics panned it. I think we have all heard enough about that for a while.
later,
SPMan

Morning all!
Back (and trying to recover) from business trip. Did not get much sleep due to working late and I never sleep well in a hotel anyway.
Less than a week from York trip. Looking forward to a break with some friends, trains, and fun included.
Partly sunny here and 80's today.
Have a great day all!
Lunch time,
Dining car came and I just finished a good bowl of soup.
Brooklyn: Home of the best Bread and Pizza. Worth the trip for that alone.
John Baker, DJ, Jack: It seems no matter what side of the Atlantic the politicians are all the same. A new party or way of thinking should be established called the Competent Party, or Common Sense Party. Some politicians have this as the Chief seems to demonstrate.
SJ: I am jealous. You have the perfect day ahead of you.
Doug: Gas prices. I paid $3.44 this morning. We are continually rising also.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Sunny But Soon To Be Raining Taxachusetts,
Brent.....Taxachusetts is inhabited by drivers also know as "M*%sholes. Those commuting Eastward toward Boston on the Mass Pike (US Route 90) drive striaght into the blinding rising/sun at 80 miles per hour, then smack into each other. Every day it is something.
Dennis......I will say a little prayer for your Grandmother. Your post prompted me to think of mine, and the wonderful memories associated with them. Lost my last grandparent when I was 13, and I never met my Dad's Mom as she was taken before WWII.
SP Ray......hope your neighbor has potential homes for those three Collies he has been ordered to remove from his property. Sounds like he got in way over his head with not only the breed he selected but also the number he has. These are not couch potatoes. One solution: a breed-specific, no-kill Collie Rescue shelter may be a seed you can plant in his head. As you already have observed, these are active, high drive dogs that need lots of exercise and a job. Beyond training, they need an owner who has a lot of time and energy for them.
DJ.....I know it is of no consolation to you, but handling estate responsibilities are a way of paying back your folks for all they have done for you. As Fife would say on a different topic, "slow and steady" is the order of the day.
JimmyT.....I consdidered sending you the few operating accessories I have for restoration and repair. Then it occured to me, I would never see them again.
Traindood......McD's, lunch of champions!!!!! Supersize the fries next time and counter the wife's FFpilferage with quantity.! My wife ALWAYS refuses to order fries. Then she criticizes my apparent gluttony when I supersize. Then she proceeds to eat my fries. Anyone else have this curious routine?
RT........glad to hear you have the source of your fever nailed down and that antibiotics whould put you back to full strength.
SJ.....when I go out to eat with family, it is not uncommon for the rest to be loading up on steaks and what they consider to be the good stuff. Hamburgers to me fit that category (w. bacon, cheddar, and jalopenas). Two weeks ago the son-in-law went out to pick up (for take out) burgers at a burger-only restaurant (Fudruckers). He and I ordered the 1 pound burgers for ourselves, with chili cheese seasoned fries, naturally. I can't believe I ate the while thing AND managed to find room for Dairy Queen afterwards. Yup, the wifey was pilfering the fries I ordered, Traindood.
JimSP.....sorry to hear you are at a physical space crossroads with your home, that the neighborhood has changed for the worse, that the dollar for dollar payback for an expansion is doubtful, and that you would be leaving behind fond childhood memories should you decide to move into something larger somewhere else. I think your head is in the right place because you are thinking "practical" and long term.. Location, location, location. You goal to keep a lid on debt and yet satisfice the space needs. True, mortgage interest rates and home equity loans are very low and will probably remain low despite the scare tactics lending concerns scream at us. The available inventory of unsold homes (hence favorable pricing with motivated sellers) opens up your options, and it gives you time flexibility. My first order of business might be yours....put your efforts into selling the vacant house and getting the lay of the land for your alternatives. The rest isn't going anywhere. Prayers you are given patience, brother.
Joe.......that Theraflu stuff works for me too, that and beer. !!!! Get well soon.
AF.......my grandparents (Mom's folks) lived about 60 miles due North of Northwoods in a tiny town of 359 in Rhinelander, WI. Nothing to do and all day to do it in the relative middle of nowhere. I have fond memories of sitting with my grandfather on warm summer evenings, listening to the Milwaukee Braves on an AM-only tube filled radio. We could learn a lot from our grandparents about a simpler life that was not overloaded with stress and complication. One of my sisters still has that radio, and it soldiers on!!!!
Brutus.....prayers that Char's return to normalcy continues. Those half days at work must be taking a lot out of her over the short run. Buy the jewelry! .
Mitch.....prayers for your friends' daughter and son-in-law, may He sustain them and the little one through this worrisome time. And thank you for reminding me how precious and precarious childbirth can be. It has been three years and a month since our daughter and son-in-law lost our first grandson in the exact same fashion. It brings tears to my eyes to this day, but I am thankful He has blessed us all with another grandchild after that.
HudsonJohn.....hope your bout with the crud is moving offshore and you are on the mend. Why not be generous and and spread it to some of the co-workers you are not particularly fond of.
Chief.....a haircut? I didn't know wigs required barber intervention.
JohnBaker......any time the politicians get their hands on your money you can be fairly certain most of it will be squandered and mismanaged. Party is irrelevant. Re the military budget, my Dad used to borrow the saying "Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it."
Gotta run. Tell your loved ones you love them, do it today. And go put a smile on someone's face while you are at it.
Jack
Aloha. Grey and cold today. What a series of adventures, Dennis. We heard about the winds. Glad you're OK and I'm sorry for your gram's passing. Joe, hope you're feeling better. Tried to connect with you all on my train ride home but Yahoo was acting up. Brutus, how lucky is that with the water pump? Whenever our mechanics think something is going bad during a fix-up, it always does. Funny how that happens.Looks like gas just popped over $4/gal. for regular here. I expect we'll be .50 cents higher by July 4. Whew! Wonder how the UP pays for all that diesel? Taking the teen, his younger brother, and my father-in-law to a local minor-league hockey game this weekend for the teen's birthday. Never been to one. I asked the bride if she wanted to go too - to celebrate her birthday - and she declined. Wonder why? Visited the local 'modern art' museum yesterday at lunch (because it was free); they sure got weird stuff in there. They did have some interactive stuff. You could sit in a giant clamshell, climb into a mini-house (felt like a giant), and print and fold and mess around with other things. Of course, of all the attendees, I was the only one to do all this stuff - they were just looking at the art - and me. I'm sure I'm in some photos online now somewhere.

Good morning
37/50s today. lite rain.
It looks like a quiet day with granny gone till 5 so I just might run some trains. Haven't thought about breakfast yet..S.J.
Mornin' Fellas.Well that brite circle of yellow caused all sorts of havoc on the roads this morning. Took me 1.5 hours to get to the office because of accidents and slow moving traffic heading East! Now I remember why I try to get here by 7am everyday. So much for getting a few more winks in. UGH!Got all of the upper level that I am redoing torn down last night. Really opens up the room! Now that it is down I have the space to look at the entire left side of the layout and think about how this is all going to work out.Dennis - for you and your family.
20C here in jolly England. Not so jolly really, these blasted conservatives (what a mis-use of a word!) are consigning 10,000 workers a week to the breadline. They are selling our Air Force and Navy to the scrap yards, now they are setting about wrecking our wonderfull health service.
THATCHER the bas***d all over again. The Argies are plotting to take over Rockall and all we have left are a few boy scouts with sticks to defend it.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....
It is a cold 36 degrees. Going up to 62 today with a chance of rain. This weather is Spring.
Today is a busy day. I have a few chores to do and some paperwork to finish. A small project needs some time. Maybe a nap this afternoon.
Dining car is here with the usual breakfast.
Y'all have a great Wednesday.

Hi GUYZ,

TRAINDOOD, gotta start doing some wrist curls either with 12oz or 16ozers. Build up those wrists.
BUCKEYE, I like Brooklyn.
MITCH, I can't believe you are even allowed to have apoll. We were told NO POOLs. At least you have money for YORK.
Stay frosty,

Buckeye Riveter Returned home from seeing the daughter and her family in Brooklyn, NY. Morning all. Yesterday started as a slow easy day. Then got real busy and did not get to post. This morning is going to busy and I hope to have an easy afternoon. Starting off at a Chamber breakfast. Walking 30 minutes with the two elementary schools and then 30 minutes with the adults in another park. American Heart Assoc. National Walk Day. After that a haircut [and I have hair, SJ ].
Prayers for all who are sick [I see we have several] and those who have a lost a love one.
Enjoyed the "Governor visit" post. If our Governor came in where I was, I would get up and leave.

Good Morning,
30 when I left the house at 5:15, up to 36 going to 59 and rain by nightfall.
No trains, just relax and to bed early. Fighting the crud and winning.
Spank, Take a deep breath and don't let it overwhelm you. It will work out.
Traindood, Christie and Mickey D's. He turning into Bill Clinton.
Dennis, Prayers for your Grandma. Sorry for your loss.
RT, Good luck with the leg.
Demay, Joe, get well soon.
Brutus, That sounded like the rope a dope. The local GMC dealer tried selling me a $400+ service with the free oil change for life deal also. The service was not required and that manager wished he did not open his mouth in front of all of the people in the waiting area. He tried selling it in front of of everyone by using the it is required and recommended line. They lost a lot of customers that day.
Mitch, Prayers for the little one and your loss years ago.
Time for the Safety Huddle,
Morning to All,
Plenty of crud in my head again this AM. As the day goes on I feel better, then start to get congested again as the sun goes down. I found out yesterday I won the March Madness pool at work, came home with a few more $$. First time I've won in years. Took the Mrs. out for dinner when I got home because she had spent several rough hours yesterday afternoon getting the taxes done. We might be getting some $$ back, preparer had to recheck the numbers.
Prayers needed for our dear friends, daughter and SIL, their first granddaughter was born yesterday at 26 weeks gestation. Baby Sierra will spend several months in NICU. No details on birth weight, etc. This hits especially close to home for the Mrs. and me because we lost twins at 26 weeks in 1983. They would 28 years old in July if they had survived.
Long night tonight, won't be home until 7:30 or later. Oh well, this too shall pass.
Better get moving.
Mitch

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 60s. Two championship games in two days. Two opportunities for Indiana teams to win. Two losses instead. I figured out how we can all get rich. Take the team I am in favor of and bet the farm against it, and start counting the cash. Hmmmmm.... I keep thinking there will be another year, but.......Oh, well, compared to the weeks Dennis W. has been going thru, the games are irrelevant. My condolences to you and your family. Yes, Brutus, the teeth are just a pebble compared to the mountains you have been up and over. I had the regular fare on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East". TBIL after soccer tonight. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,
Mike C. from Indiana
Prayers for your loss, Dennis. Also, glad you had a good trip and avoided all the bad stuff!
Took off today as had to get the truck serviced and wife had dentist appt, so I had to get the kids from school etc. I had a free service and detail on the truck because when they serviced it last time they didn't properly tighten the tires nuts down and one was vibrating loose. So about 9:30, the guy from the garage says the mechanic noticed the bearing on the water pump felt a little loose and did I want to replace the water pump for $400? I told him to check it and see what he thought, but if it was bad then I guess it needed to be replaced. He called about 3 hours later and said he and another mechanic both checked it and it was dry and didn't feel loose to them at all. They had the first guy recheck, and he didn't think so either - must have been the fan flexing a little? Oh well, I didn't have to pay $$$ today, so glad for that. Hope it doesn't go bad on the interstate though!
Wife is doing well and getting better at making it through her half-days at work. She had dentist appt today and they found some cavities and other issues that they said are very common with advanced chemotherapy. Just another blip on the highway, though - nothing we can't handle.
Nice chats with SJ, Charlie and Joe tonight - hope you feel better soon. TARDIS is ready and some banilla sounds good. I have the rootbeer, so beacons on boys
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Good evening all! Another long day of work. Just winding down he reading the past two days posts.
Had a great time at the Stadium last night as Mo finished it off like he usually does (with the save). Next game is on the 14th.
The other day when the topic of listening to games on the radio brought to mind of when I stayed with my grandparents at the Jersey shore every summer. I usually went to bed listening to the Yankees game and fell asleep without turning the radio off. Well my grandfather didn't know how it turned off. So there were many mornings I woke up with it unplugged! Great times!
Fifedog - Got to be careful at these games. So much good food at the park. Kept it under control with just a dog and 1 Becks! Week 3 -1 more.
John - Let me know the next time you go and see the BlueClaws I'll drive. We go to about 2 games a year. It IS a nice place to see a game!
Jim - Good luck on your choice about the house. You're so right about how things change so much from when it was "our" nieghborhood.
Joe - Let me know the next time you're around maybe you, John (if I can convince him) and I can take in a game.
MikeC - Yes, it wasn't pretty with the Bulldogs last night but they still made alot of noise in the tournament this year again. Something tells me this will be a habit for them each year. They have some good coach.
Jack - Glad all is ok. The vehicle can be repaired, your body, not so easy!
Good night all
Good evening all,
I’m still feeling a little sick, but the Thera Flu is helping. I came home from work early and relaxed. I had dinner with the boys while the wife and princess had a girls-night-out dinner. I did some small maintenance on the Reading Alcos and ran the trains for a while. We had another minor pile up, but we were back to normal operating in a minute or so. The neighbor kids were playing in the garage with my son and also asking many questions about the trains and I got sidetracked – once again I forgot to throw a switch. It’s nice other kids are taking an interest in the trains.
I had a brief chat with Brutus, Charlie, and SJ, and now I am off to bed to sleep off this crud.
Good night,
Joe
