Happy Wednesday!

This is my Friday, and I’ll be gone as soon as I can get the car packed up.  Oh, yeah, need to get off of work, too!

I moved quite a bit of stuff from the train room to the living room and that’ll have to be packed up in the car.  It’s amazing what I have and what I have forgotten.  Maybe if I can complete my bucket list, I’ll find a place for all this.  But, until then, it’ll be safe at my sister’s house in New Jersey.  It’ll keep my roadrunner company...Banged Head.

I spoke to one of my firefighter friends the other night and she asked me why I'm moving all this up.  I told her that maybe if I move enough stuff up, I’d eventually follow it.Laugh

Had an early morning ultrasound (no, I’m not pregnant) of the kidneys and bladder.  results in 3 days or so.  I think this is much to do about nothing, seems like my urine output is too high and the creatinin level is high as well.  Went through this 2 years ago and nothing then, I suspect nothing now...

Cool and nice here, maybe a precursor to the weather in New Jersey, and I hope it is.  Had the windows open last night and slept well.  I hope the same for Jersey when I get there.

Jack, yup the ol’ Hog seems to be running well these days, knock on wood, it stays that way.

Mike, I used to love the Indy 500, until everyone had the same car and such.  I loved those turbo Offenhausers and Granitelli’s Turbo car.  The sanctioning bodies are so worried about parity (yeah NASCAR as well), the innovators and inventors have been run out of town.  I mean really, is the HEMI that much of an advantage?  Couldn’t you just see an Indy car with a 355cid Hemi going down the back straight of the Brickyard?  Yeah, that would be NASCAR and Indy Car...and it would have happened in the 50’s (check your champ car history...).

Geez, I’m sounding like Jack Smile,Wink, & Grin...ok, until tomorrow night,

See ya later!

Rich M.

ROCKISLAND,

JACK, nope on the dog for the run.  She's 12 and it would do her in.  I'll take her down to the creek this afternoon so she can take a dip.

Jack, I have the same pool problem with the declining use issue.  Wife does not go in at all anymore.  Only myself and grandson basically use it.  Other two sons will go maybe twice a season.

Doug, you don't want to own a pool.  Find a friend with one.  If it were possible, I would give you mine.  They are nice when the kids are growing up but after, not much use.

I put in the amount of dry acid yesterday per the pool store but upon testing, I find that it was a little too much.  Now I have a slightly alkaline pool.  I have been told that using the liquid chlorine will bring the PH back to normal in time.  I don't want to start putting in soda ash to compensate for too much acid.  Before you know it you would have a toxic waste dump for a pool.  The pool at least looks good for now.  I put in the stuff this morning to get rid of phosphates.  I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Found a nice website yesterday about the new train museum in Portsmouth, Va. where I grew up.  Same guy that put the pictures up had a whole set of historical things around town.  Saw a picture of my High School being torn down and I almost cried.  I saw the thing being built back in the 50's.  It was still in good shape as far as I can tell but the population shift in the area caused the students to go to different locations so they were not getting enough use out of it.  You can Google on Train museums in Virginia and find something on this.  The train they have is a N&W class M 4-8-0 and some passenger cars.  The engine was rescued from a scrap yard in Roanoke, Virginia.

Howdy all!  Had therapy this morning, did nothing with the hamstring - think we're just gonna shut it down for the week.  Iced it down for about 3.5 hours last night, and will probably do it again tonight.  I'm keeping it tightly wrapped during the day, which helps.  Right now, any contraction of the muscle is painful.............

Spanky.....I'd be inclined to shut the hammy down for two weeks except for heat, ice, stretching, the pool, and either diathermy or ultrasound, maybe some analgesic under the wrap, based on your recent bumps in the road.

Granted, some of the pops and discomfort are from the surgical repair (site) itself and/or breaking adhesions from scar tissue, but all of them?  Sounds like a combo of this and muscle to me.  The diathermy is an old technology that I think uses electrical current to heat deep into the muscle.  Keep aggravating an already damaged or pulled muscle, and this could extend things quite a bit.

I am certain the PT folks are well aware of what was repaired, how, and what they have to do to rehab the knee, but..... with Murphy's law, ya never know if the left hand (the doc) and the right hand (PT folks) are communicating.  My 2 cents

Guys, Swimming pools and boats are a lot alike. Can't wait to get one but even happier when you get rid of it. Whistling When our daughter was in school, elemtentary/middle/high, the pool was in use at least six months out of the year but when college started it was little if ever used. Between the chemicals & electricity that thing cost a fortune, hopefully today's pumps are much more efficient.

SWMBO has a BUNCO party coming up so as usual the honeydo list is very extensive, spent most of yesterday on the sloping yard prepping & planting some Trailing Lantana. Should start rooting and spreading PDQ. Supposed to stand up to gophers pretty good.

Mike,

You were right about the Lost finale.Zzz  That was a long and boring 2.5 hours.

Jack,

Haven't had any calls regarding a real full time job yet.  I am still working at a local grocery store until one comes along.  It isn't bad, but as soon as something better is available, I'll definitely move on.

Hey Spanky - sent you an email Thumbs Up

Okay - got on the computer late last night as we were out running around getting haircuts and icecream.  Windows Vista, Defender, and my security suite all decided to update at the same time Banged Head  I got on the chat, got booted off, then computer locked for about 30 minutes, no joke.  I rebooted it even.  Eventually everything updated, but what a pain.

Read the new OGR and finished the new issue of Trains.  Got a magazine on Historical Trains that I guess I ordered some time or other - looks interesting!  That latest issue of Trains was about short-line railroads and was very interesting.

As Arnie used to say - I'll Be Back!

Welcome aboard Richotrain. HO stands for half O dosen't it?  Always wondered if one could run an HO train between the center rail and outside rail of three rail O gage track.

I wondered the same thing.  My brother-in-law is a Lionel guy, so maybe I will try my HO stuff out on his layout.  Smile

Hey guys, thanks for the warm welcome to the Coffee Pot.

I'm a 66 year old retired lawyer who ran a financial planning group at a large Chicago bank until hanging it up two years ago.

Now, I am a bum.  Play golf all summer and run trains all winter.  When it gets too hot outside here in the Chicago area, I descend into my basement dungeon and run trains.

Look forward to drinking some coffee with you from time to time.  Is it decaf or regular or half of each?

Evening all!

Jack (SPMan) - the wind here this spring has been 15-20 mph+ every single day until this week. So there was no point in taking a ski/wakeboarding boat out as the ride is rough as a cobb. I was going to go today, but then I had a critical meeting move from Thurs to today so I moved up the launch a day. Wind yesterday was 5-15, so it was nice and smooth behind the dam on the lake. The winds today were 0-5 mph - and guess what? - the meeting today got cancelled Angry. It is supposed to be decent for the holiday weekend with winds no worse than 10 mph which is good - I will have 6 16 year old wake-boarding bums with me.

Rich - Welcome to the 'Pot! Stick around. What you will find is quite a few of us have found a way to meet face-to-face in our travels and have become even better friends. If you are a TCA member - come out and hang with us at York (April and Oct each year). If you are not a TCA member - we'll sign you up!

Have a great evening all!

Regards, Roy

The answer to the million $$$ question.  NO!

Passing through.  Actually going to hit the bed.  Got to be up at 5:30 AM for a 7 AM Human Services Board meeting in Raleigh.  Then home to pick garden and mow grass.  Then back to the lake house.  Was going to mow this afternoon but lost an hour and a half looking for Lucy.  She suddenly got missing.  Showed up 1 1/2 hours later.  Folks riding golf carts looking for her and several including me walking in the woods calling her.  Mystery!!!!!  Either chasing a deer or treed a squirrel and would not leave the tree.  ????

Now for my friend Fifey.  Wifey fixed this just for you.

New planter bed at the street at the lake house by new power pole.

Mostly sunny and 80's today.  Muggy too.

Mowed the lawn tonight.  Got some front porch swing time in while I was drying out after mowing.

I'll have to agree about the 'uniform' equipment they are currently running at Indy.  It does taks some of the creativity away.  Long and interesting history of equipment run there over the years - Smoky Yunik's side pod car, Crosworth V8's, Eagle V8's, Offinhauser, a couple of Cummings diesels, Buick 215 aluminum V8's, Buick & Chevy 'stock block' cars, twin engine car with a Porshe engine on each end, front wheel drives, rear wheel drives, four wheel drives, and of course, the turbines.  I'm sure that I missed lots of other interesting stuff.

Interestingly enough, I immediately noticed the architectual similarities of the Ecotech four in my Cobalt to the Offinhauser - four cylinder, cross flow four valve head, dual overhead cams.

Sorry for the car talk on the train forum, though I've run across a couple of references that interest in both toy trains and cars is not uncommon.

Have I ever mentioned how nice this forum is?  I've been lurking on some car related forums lately.  A lot of the things posted there would not be tolerated here.  The keepers of this forum are doing an excelent job.

All for now.

Good morning all,

It may be rainy today in SE Indiana.  I agree with all the comments about the lack of variety at Indy any more.  I never saw any of the front wheel drives race, but I have seen most of the other variations mentioned.  The sweetest sound was the Novi.  Hopefully some new choices will appear again.  Personally, I think some front engined Silver Crown cars that USAC tried a couple of years ago would be the best option, but I doubt if that option would be considered.  I am not sure how this race will play out.  The "push to pass" may make passing feasible again or it could be another snooze fest like last year.  We shall see.  I scrimmaged with the high school kids last night.  I had a little extra on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL after the yard is mowed.  I hope everyone has a great day.

Keep on training,

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a sunny 68 degrees. Going up to 80 today with sunshine.

Today is a busy day. Grocery shopping. Not the wife's favorite job. But, it has to be done. Chores to do this morning. I need to dust the trains again. That will happen this weekend.

Dining car rolled in from "Points West". The usual for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Thursday.

Good Mornin'Ya'll From Overcast Taxachusetts,

It's about 20 degrees cooler at 57 this morning than it was yesterday at this time.  Topped 90 yesterday again, a near record.  Rain on the way to give way to the sun.

So I did some reading.  Re the topic of "vanilla" and innovation at the Indy 500, Texas-born Illinois millionaire Andy Granatelli secretly built a gas turbine-powered car with the help of Pratt and Whitney for the 1967 race.  Legendary driver Parnelli Jones piloted the car to within 6 miles of victory when on lap 197 a $6 ball bearing let go, in the trans I think, close but no cigar.  The car featured 4 wheel drive and set the conventional gasoline engine auto manufacturers on their ear.....until the sanctioning body "adjusted" the rules to significantly reduce the turbine's air intake for future races, dumping the horsepower and making his car uncompetitive.  It seems Granatelli claimed his turbine developed 550hp while the conventional piston engines developed the same.  AJ Foyt and others claimed otherwise, that Granatelli low-balled the claimed hp output, some speculating closer to 700.

Turbines did not die off as much as got sanctioned off.  They ran in the 1968 race but suffered mechanical issues.  Development of the turbine for open wheel racing continued briefly until the "sanctioning" body banned turbines and 4 wheel drive altogether.
