Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a rainy 50 degrees. Looks like rain all day. Only going up to 68 today.

Today is a busy day. I have a bunch of things to do, chores and some paperwork. I will relax this afternoon, hopefully. Got some nice pictures taken at PT yesterday. Legs are achy today.

Dining car is here for a Cheerios breakfast. Got a chocolate cake from "Points West".   Cupcakes too.

Y'all have a great Tuesday.

Chuck

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Sunny Taxachusetts,

Dennis.......thanks for the words about your Dad and his recollections of your Mom on Mothers' Day.  I had several of those conversations with my Dad who missed my Mom terribly in the years after she was gone.  He wasn't an overly sentimental man, so his comments about her had impact.  At times I had wished my career had kept me closer to my folks geographically, but we spoke often and I made trips back to Chicago to visit whenever I could.  Life's choices sometimes separate us but are necessary.  I listen to those in my realm of acquaintance grouse over small matters about their parents, those whose parents live close to them.  I try to remind them that many of us don't have the luxury of simply being there to listen or to help out.  And as in my case, not even with the visit or by phone since both of my folks are gone.

Later, Gang.

Jack

Good Morning Guys...and our hosts and censors as well....

Happy B-Day Chuck, sorry I’m late!  Hope it was a good one!

Well, the Princess turned 18 on Friday and we left Thursday night for Orlando.  Friday was the big day and the Princess had her Disney Jeweled tiara and Disney Birthday Princess button.  We went to Animal Kingdom and she received a Happy Birthday button.  The day was filled with Happy Birthday, Princess comments from the Disney staff.  We had lunch at the Rain Forest Café and then back to the park until 3 or so, the kids and Mrs went to the pool while I recouped a bit in the room.  We went for dinner at Planet Hollywood where her 18th Birthday was announced.  Back at the room by midnight, the room overlooks the nature preserve where water buffalo, gazelle, zebra and other sorts of wildlife graze.  Alas, the sprinklers came on and they all scooted...

Still waiting for my water tanker from Choochoo, and my bargain AtlasO track has arrived as well as my 2010 Golden Spike literature.  My 2 cars, however will not make it until August....Banged Head.

Angel for Char, Spanky, Mrs. 8N, and anyone else ailing.

Up to 82 today, low humidity....couldn’t ride in today Banged Head, have some stops to make for business...maybe tomorrow.

Chief, Nice garden....but we all KNOW Jersey tomatoes are better....Whistling

Ok, guys, later on!

Jack, I think my Dad and yours are of the same stock... not very emotional, so when those moments come, they are poignant.

Rich, when we were down at Disney this past year with Mom and Dad, we stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge as well.  Room was on 2nd floor facing preserve....fantastic!  I have about 900 photos from our balcony.  We also ate at Rainforest Cafe' before we headed to the cruise ship.  Boy is that place fun!  For those interested in staying at AKL, the only complaint is that you are a good 20-30 minutes  by bus from the other parks.  If you are doing Park Hopper, it is a long ride.  If you are staying there and only going to Animal Kingdom, it is great.

Tractor is loaded and I will soon be taking it to the repair folks.  Then, have to get into the hospital and take care of some business.

God Bless,
Dennis

Aloha from a rainy Chicago. Good meeting with the pastor last night - hope encouraged him. Long day with class tonight. I'll be looking for fellow riders on my 'milk run' home.  Banks, if that diner is 14 inches long, it looks O to me. A nice find.  Prayers for Mrs 8nt. Submbob, the teen has a A in Small Engines, definitely related to the small motor repair book you sent him. Smile I have collected a few old radios too. Love seeing the vacumn tubes warm up...

Doug .... I picked up a ZENITH TRANS-OCEANIC TUBE SHORT WAVE  at a yard sale years ago for $1.00 .... brought it home ... plugged it in and it works like new . Looks excatly like the ones in the old war war 2 movies the resistance listened to fighting the axis . Anyone know anything about them ? Banks,

That is the Chat and Chew Roadside Diner from 1995.  I've had one since new.  Yours is missing the sign on top of the roof and the cover on one of the streetlights.  You got a good deal since they were $80 when new.  I'll try to take a pic of mine today.

mso-492, is ocean minesweeper

Navy, is that the same kind of ship in the movie "The Caine Mutiny"?  Always liked the photography and the patriotic music in that show.  An actor friend of mine won a contest years ago doing the scene where Jose Ferer makes a speach to the officers of the Caine following the Court Marshal about how they could have prevented the mutiny by backing up the Captain played by Humphry Bogart.  The prize for winning the contest was a free apprenticeship with Broadway actors doing summer stock.  That was around 1956 or 57 I think.  The movie had just been realeased then.

Went for my usual walk this morning.  Have a get together with church social group tonight.  Got invite to another birthday party yesterday but at least this one is causual dress and no gifts required.  It's just birthday cake and drinks.  This is the second one in a week where somebody is turning 75.

Have a good day y'all,

Ray

SubMBob.....did some reading up on the Corvair, inspired by your restoration posts.

The Corvair was the Motor Trend Car of the Year for model year 1960.  A lot of folks think Ralph Nader killed the Corvair over its treacherous rear suspension, but that issue had been mostly corrected by the time he had gained a lot of traction with his efforts and before his book "Unsafe At Any Speed" was released.  It was the introduction of competitor vehicles (Mustang, Falcon, Valiant) that spelled the Corvair's doom.  Apparently GM didn't think it was worth it to pour any money into it despite the fact that between 1960 and 1969 nearly 1.8 million Corvairs had been sold!?!  The Ford Mustangs hit the GM Execs in their pride zone, and they folded.

The Corvair was one of those cars that in many ways was ahead of its time.  A flat 6 with opposing cylinders (like today's Porsche Boxter and the Subarus), aluminum heads, air cooled, and the turbo version.  On the 1966 Corsa turbo, here was a 2,450 pound car witha 2.7 liter engine with 180 gross horsepower!  Unitized construction.  Fully independent suspension.  It could hit 60 in just under 10 seconds and top out at 120mph.

So which engine are you are you building?  Is yours a coupe, sedan, convertible, or the rare station wagon?

Smilehello ray, i do not know what kind of ship was used in the caine mutiny as i did not see the movie.  i was on the uss pledge MSO-492 beginning in 1980.  it was a wood hull minesweeper 172 feet long.  it was one of four home-ported on the west coast.  the ship had been built during ww-11 but like most navy ships, the navy got its moneys worth. when i got to long beach naval station(now closed i think), the navy had two minesweepers and two old destroyers there.  with ron reagan as pres when i left there, there were more than 50 ships and the place was booming.  sad to think of that place shut down now.  all the ships are now at one base...san diego...think that the govt would have learned from its experience with pearl harbor.  when i was in there were three main navy bases on the west coast. navyjack

Hi All,

Hope everyone remembered VE Day Saturday. Had a great Mother's Day. It began with Mass, Joshua"s soccer game and then back to our Gamma and Papa's house. The men cooked (well the ribs) and Chicken Shack did the rest. The men did the clean up also.

Doug, Sounds like I should have consulted your son when my JD/Sabre was not charging the battery. Did find it myself. The in-line fuse contacts were corroded.

Doug and Oletimer, I have some old, old vacuum tubes. Anyone interested, e-mail me.

Prayers for all in need, ESPECIALLY those "IN HARMS WAY"

Also, prayers for the UNDOCUMENTED and OUR ENEMIES.

The Caine was based on a larger ocean-going minesweeper that author Herman Wouk served on in the War, a conversion of a four-piper WW1 DD.  Now that's something we need in O scale.

Off to class.

Good evening everyone.  Has been a long day, but I should be heading into bed soon.  Have a case I am watching for another 45 minutes, but it should be fine.  Made some vegetable soup tonight for dinner.  It was good, but a tad spicy for the wife.  Helped son with some project he was working on.  We had gotten him some Star Wars paper model kits that he likes to build.  They are fragile, but he does a good job.  Funny, while working on one, he told me he remembered one of the Toy Train programs in which they mentioned Lionel having paper kits for kids during WW2.  Kid has some memory.

Banks, I am surprised that they seller gives a TCA rating and yet doesn't know the scale of the piece and also doesn't mention the missing sign on top.  Still, it is a good deal you have there.  Good luck with it.

Watched Avatar this morning with wife after dropping off tractor.  While it does have a bit of the "mother earth" garbage, once you got past it, it was a pretty good flick.  Quite imaginative.  Some of the guys on our production team also worked on it and they said that the filming with the actors only took about two weeks as they hooked them all up with sensors and once a complete motion scan was done, they could make any movement with the generated image they wanted.

I saw the sad news about that 25 year old golfer who died.  Not sure of the circumstances, but regardless, it is sad.  She was a pretty woman with a bright future ahead of her.

Chuck, when I had my knee done, the PT in charge of me was quite attractive also.  It almost made you want to stay in there.  She is a good looking woman, but who is that grumpy looking character sitting next to her?  Just kidding.  Glad you are well along in getting back to 100%  Keep up the good work.

God Bless,
Dennis
