Rich....Again this year I really took the high road and gave up grits for Lent.  So far no with-drawl symptoms.

Laz.....I'm up a dawn tomorrow, so you need to post the TGIF.

I still have snow in my front yard where it fell.   I'm thinking of moving to Buffalo for milder winters.

Attended a meeting today just to listen.   Does anyone understand that construction costs money?  What ever happened to economic analysis?  Now if someone "thinks" its good for (put the cause here) then it must be the best thing that has hit town.   As an old engineer once said, "if they have enough money, we can build it."

Brutus....More great news!

Cloudy and 50's here today.

The exhaust pipe broke off of the back of the cat con on the '78 Aspen today on the way home from work.  Two hose clamps, a hacked up piece of galvanized drier vent, and 20 minutes on my back in the driveway produced a patch worthy of the 'there its fixed!' web site.  Good enough to get to the muffler shop in a day or two.

Won the 3472 milk car & platform! About $20, including shipping.  Looks to be a later version, as it has the plastic doors.  Will need to arrange for a set of milk cans though.

Heard from mom today.  She reports that her knew knee is now finally feeling better than before the surgery.  Also had a discussion with the rehab center's diatition about the food.  Boy, I would have liked to be a mouse in the corner while that was going on!

Navy Jack - "we are the US, not the government" - you got that right. I'll stop here 'cause politics are verboten on this forum.......

All for now.

Back at the scope a day later than normal. Two of our trucks got stuck late Tuesday, and since I needed one to bring up more liquid nitrogen, I delayed until today. I think the EE's will be really afraid of snow now.

8N - I've read about the 3 angle valve jobs, but I didn't realize that was a new thing. I entrusted it to a Corvair shop in CA and the heads do look nice. One has a couple of broken sheet metal bolts, but nothing that can't be remedied. The 110 HP crank and clearancing the block are next. Quick work on the Aspen BTW.

Jack - with my schedule I have to strike while the iron is hot. Showed her around the place after dinner. The place was cleaned up and neat, but she may be in slight culture shock when it comes to some of the furnishings. This is the first real place I've had by myself, so up to this point most things have been inexpensive or freeWhistling

Brutus - love to hear the continuing good news!

Buckeye - did you hear if they were going to pave US 401 this time 'round?

Dennis - think you have already made your decision, but have the windshield seal done. Those guys earn their pay and know the tricks. And as I'm sure you already know, not much is cheap on a Mercedes.

Chief - congrats on the new engines! You are going to need a full circle roundhouse in the near future!

NavyJack - glad to hear the wife is better and that you are close to a layout!

Jim T. - keep the old ones running, they really don't make them like they used to

The surplus snowshoes are pretty cool. Looks like they were made in 1979. Had I gone to Bridgeport, CA for Cold Weather "You want us AZ boy's to do what?" Training they may very well have been what they would have given me. Hope to try them out Sat. morning.

Good morning all,

It will be rainy in SE Indiana today and still mild.  Just did weights at Y last night as toe still hurts.  No bruising, but it is slightly swollen. Worked on taxes.  Took an hour to recopy and recheck Federal return (including printing off some more forms).  There was one form I had to fill out that had absolutely no effect on the amount of money involved.   Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!  State forms are almost as bad.  I had the regular fare on the dining car (English muffins instead of toast) as it rolled in from "Points East".  TBIL after series finale of "Numb3rs".  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Morning all

TGIF and I am aking today off for a few projects.  I got the kids off to school but my bride did not approve of my hair fixing abilities on the girls and did a touch up.

Greg - A while back on the AF picture link you had a picture of a 635 crane car with a black roof.  After research determined he roof was blued.  I took a beat up crane cab roof and blued it to reproduce the black roof look.  When I'm done I'll post some pictures.

Need to get started

Good Morning Jim,

I think I posted that on a Sunday Photo Fun. Here it is again.

It will be great to see your results. Personally I like the look of the crane with a black roof.  I still think that we should start a Gilbert American Flyer S-gauge pictures thread.

Enjoy your day off, and have succes on those projects.  Hopefully at least a few of them are train related.

Aloha from a sunny and cool Chicago. TGIF! That AF photo thread should be 'permanent'. Looks like it'll be a productive day but busy weekend. Ran the trains last night. Noticed a rattling in James' tender where the sound suddenly stopped working. Hmmm. Put aside the 96 and 45 Gateman projects - to get their solenoids working - for now. I'm going to look for someone else to look at them for a second opinion.

I just got a call from Buckeye and he was very upset.  It seems ,that while he and Wes were having breakfast, at a local Columbus Soup Kitchen, his car was vandalized by the local hobos. They stole his prized eight track tape player, and a rusty shovel. They also took a canteen of cheap wine, that was his lunch. His spare pair of shoes are missing too. Then, they rubbed oil all over his windshield, and set it on fire. All his tires were slashed. They painted his headlights with maroon and gray paint. On the way home, he got a ticket for speeding.

You could hear him reply, as he drove out of sight.................................." TGIF ".

Now how'd that happen?Whistling  Was there any moonpie cargo?  Sometimes that happens when those cars come south of the MD line...or so I have heard.  Anyway, hope the damage wasn't too severe.

Cannonball, I love Grand Junction.  That is where I fly into when we go Elk hunting.  Regarding your train purchase if getting into the hobby, I have a couple of suggestions.  First, get a starter set so you will have something to run and have fun with while you are working out exactly where you want to go in the hobby.  None of us seem to have unlimited resources, so it is best to limit your purchases beyond the starter set to a direction you want to go.  Some great starter sets are available by most manufacturers these days.  With a 40% coupon from Hobby Lobby, you can pick up one of the Lionel "Flyer" sets for about $150-$200.  When looking for direction, try to see other people's layouts and find what interests you most.  May be Post War, Pre War Lionel or others.  May be modern with or without command control.  You may also want to limit it to specific railroad names like New York Central, etc.  You would be well served with doing ten times the amount of time looking and getting ideas before the time of purchasing.  You might also decide to model late years, all diesel, or electric.  Or, perhaps Steam/diesel of the late 40s to early 50s.(this is where you have more options).  Anyway, good luck.

Good Afternoon,

Got a little warmer and now cooled off some with the rain. Hey anjdevil if the storms keep up I may be up to see you or the Chief a whole lot sooner than anybody wants me to!!  Got a tornado watch until 5pm or so today, just hope that I don't catch the Big Wind Gust!!

Speaking of traveling I might be going up to Philladelphia this summer, with a side trip over to Lancaster PA. Will be going to Leesport market on wednesday morning, have some nice shopping there.

Still don't know anything more about the sale of the RV!  Maybe if I go up there and kick down the office door he may pay attention, then again if I do that the sheriff's department may give me a free ride to the slammer.

Been working on my layout a little, lighting up the house for Shrek on the Ogre Pass siding. Repalced the passenger cars on that run because they kept jumping the track without permission.

Jim, Welcome aboard the coffee pot.  That 3 inch long caboose sounds like N gauge.  That stuff is hard to work with when you get a little older and the eyes are'nt as good as they used to be.  The advantage is that you can get a lot in a small space.  I have tried HO, N and finally O gauge.  O gauge suits me just fine but it takes up my whole garage to run it.  Of course you can build layouts as small as 4 X 8 feet.  Try to meet someone with an O gauge layout in your area to get ideas or visit local hobby shop.  I doubt if there are any train clubs near you but that's how I got started in O gauge.  Good luck with whatever you decide.  There are plenty of folks on here that will give advice if wanted.

Another evening collecting photons at the 'scope. Got a number of projects to work on if things stay quiet.

Jim - Welcome to the Pot! Nice to see another Arizonan too. There's a couple of stores in the Phoenix area: Roy's Train World in Mesa and another in Cave Creek which would be closer to you. I've not been to the Cave Creek store so you will have to let me know how it is.

Jim T. - the car looks and sounds good!

Well off to work on some of the electronics for the windbird.
