A quick pass through.  Just walked in the door from Town Hall.  Starving as not eaten since breakfast at the lake.  Was getting ready to open a can of soup when I got a call to rush back to town for a project.  Seems the blanky the blank ~@#^*( Yankee weather forecasted for tomorrow evening and night into Saturday moved a Town project up to this afternoon.  Jon, Buckeye, Chuck and Don, project was taken care of.  Sad but had to be done.  BTW: calling for up to 10 inches of snohio and with below freezing temps for a couple of days after that.  BURRRR.  Later

Hey guys, just a quick one tonight.  We'll have a few tough days now as my wife's numbers are really getting low.  They said she won't hit 0 immunity, but will get really close, then the new stuff will start working and numbers will start to climb, slowly at first and then faster.  Her sister, the donor, is still having really significant pain, but she is walking a lot better.

Tardis is ready and I'm ready to go, beacons on men!  Mike can drive tonight and the rest of us will check out Wes' new crane car, his flat car with load on it, and now a hobo campfire - I smell s'mores!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Ok, here's a couple pictures I took from the 5th floor balcony (after I shovelled it off). The first is looking south. Mexico is somewhere out there.

The second is looking west toward the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope. The snow level is halfway up the windows and it pretty much buried a Cherokee last week. We got 16" more inches of new snow last night. Supposed to have a breather 'til next Wednesday.

Now we are just waiting for some good weather so we can test out the new high frequency receiver (600 - 700 GHz). When this clears out we may get some really good weather. The low frequency receiver is still down due to technical issues.

Ray - that sounds like the same storm where the cab forward got stuck. Pretty impressive. If you down have a copy of that book, check it out. I found a used copy on line. The Nevada Northern still has it's Leslie rotary it ordered back in 1910 in fairly original condition. They'd like to restore it to operating condition like they did with the steam crane.  Apparently the one preserved at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum was the one involved in the City of San Francisco rescue.

Pat - I've seen a promo clip for the Colorado snow plow video you were talking about. I think it was on the Cumbres and Toltec with 4 of their Mikados and a steam rotary. Enough to salivate over. Will have to find a copy some day.

Starting to wear my orthotic inserts a few hours a day. Feels weird at first but I'm getting used to it. I think it corrected how I walk the first time I had them in. My podiatrist says I walk like a velociraptor, on three points.

For now I'm just taking care of some small stuff and waiting out the weather. I'll try and walk down the access road tomorrow afternoon and get some more photos. As the road is only one lane now, I'll need to wait until all the day crew yahoos are off the hill.

Brutus - I brought a candle up to the scope w/ me. The first time were open on my shift I'm going to light it for your wife. When the telescope is open and on sky, I've always thought it looked like it was open and listening for God's inspiration and guidance.

Brutus, Prayers for Char and Bow to your sister-in-law. Being a donor is not the most pleasant thing to go thru but well worth the reward of knowing that you have made a contribution. I've been on the list for many years but haven't been called, maybe they think crankiness is contagious. Smile,Wink, & Grin

Wasn't able to get my trolley earlier this week, should be there tomorrow.

Roy, Hope your sister is doing better. Angel

Love to watch some of those "youtube" clips on RR snow clearing. Thumbs Up

Almost sunny and almost 30 here today.

Brutus - thanks for the Info.  I've got to go look up and see what model dishwasher we have.

Been invited to have dinner next week with the VP in charge of our division - no, not just me, the salried staff of the palnt.  The dinner is being billed as a 'congratulations for a sucessful 2009' event.  At this point, spouses are not invited, so it is essentially another late night at work.  IMHO, they are missing the boat by not inviting the spouses - they put up with a lot - extra hours away from home, grumpyness, O-dark thirty phone calls, etc.  Seems to me the spouses are as much a part of the work team as the employees. (End or rant)

Later all.

Brutus......progress with a price.  I was sorry to hear Diana is in pain and I hope that subsides asap.  An ordeal for all.  Prayers continue for this dynamic duo and your entire family.  I'll bet Chewy and the kids are restless.  hang in there.

SJ.....close the door.  Your cold temps are headed this way.

Roy.....hope sis is doing ok and the meds do the trick..  Prayers continue for her too.

Bob.....enjoyed the photos.  Simply beautiful.  Thanks.

8N......are you sure you would want to subject your wife to an evening like that?  One large outfit I worked for thanked the management staff for a solid year by giving out hefty gift certificates to take the wives out wherever and whenever.  Didn't make up for the zillions of hours away that you mentioned but it was intended to recognize that sacrifice.

Chief must be up to his knickers in snow about now, Northwood's weather..

Dennis.....windshield washer fluid without a de-icing agent?  What do they sell you down there?  Colored water?

Don.....thanks again for the transformer repair info.

RT and Rich.......was glad to ge a rise out of you two with the grits comment.

Laz......225?  Is that a svelte 225,  a Mark McGuire 225, or a Fat Albert 225 ?

High winds right now with temperatures forecast in the single digits for tomorrow night.

Bob, beautiful pictures.  Brutus, prayers for Char.  Now some say 2 to 3 inches of snow and some say 10 inches.  We'll wait and see.  Got a little over 40 hours of gas for the generator.  Hope that is a good "insurance policy".  Reclinerized holding Trains magazine.  Off to bed.  9 AM staff meeting with Town staff.  Sleep tight.

 Evening All,

Bob, that is some serious snow!!!  Great pictures! Looks beautiful. How long are the shifts up there?

Jack, Thanks for the compliments.  I too will repair something or have it done, especially if it has some history to it.  I see to much of our "disposable" society on a daily basis!!!

Chief,  Glad your deed is over!  Know its not fun, but sometimes things like that have to happen.  Its just like weather have to have the rain to enjoy the flowers.

Ran trains for a while tonight.  Need to run them more, I'm forgetting minor details, like not throwing the switch.  Caused a engine to run into a bumper, no physical damage but having difficulty getting the sound back up.  Will have to work on it more tomorrow.

More craziness going on here.  Most of the cement manufactured in Ca., is manufactured in San Berdo County.  (Approx 1/3).  Anyway, carbon dioxide is a by-product, CARB requirements regarding global warming and CO2 restrictions, are causing cement companys pumping the gas via a underground pipe a couple hundred miles, then buried in empty/abandoned underground crude oil sites.  (More companies moving to AZ or NV ???

Here's the Donner-like-Pass photo I was talking about. The loader has a snow blower on it. They haven't needed to use the blowers in 10 years.

Don - the shifts are 12 hrs long and we do 7 in a row. Then take a week for R & R (Rest and Recouperation) .

Spent the shift fixing a few things and catching up on ordering some items.

Doug - there's a very cool video on You Tube of the return of White Pass & Yukon's #1 steam rotary.

I found a couple of videos on steam rotary operation, but I need to save money for Corvair parts.

Almost at the end of shift and then off to bed.

Good morning all,

It is cloudy again in SE Indiana.  Easy drive on the Tardis last night as even Patrick and Don's neighbor were on "good" terms and the GRITS discussion settled down.  TGIF.  Long day of training where I have to be the leader today.  Could be interesting.  Hopefully will go smoothly.  Wife is finally getting back to normal.  When she starts yelling at me, I know things are fine lol.  Dining car rolled in from "Points East" with the regular fare.  Go easy on the PT, Chuck.  Did the usual at the YMCA.  TBIL anytime after "Numb3rs".  Last "Dollhouse" tonight.  No more Elisha Dushku for awhile after tonight :-(   A sad occurrence in Indycar yesterday with Tony George shuttering his team for the time being.  From running the entire show to total lack of involvement in less than a year......  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Mornin' boys.  It's cold...I'm complaining.  However, looks like SNOHIZO is raiding south of the Potomac.

Ole Timer - Get my post on Tall Pines and Winding Rivers?

cheapclassics - If they could go back in time, do you think the open wheel folks would have avoided the split?

submmbob - Looks like the setting of a Stephen King book.

anjdevil - that made me smile.  My grandfather looked a lot like Jack, even down to the facial expressions.  I remember watching reruns of DRAGNET with him.  Thanks.

Aloha from probably the coldest day of the year so far where the air temp is 3. Sorry to be sending it on east to Michigan and Ohio. Prayers for Brutus' ladies and Roy's sister, Dennis' travels and safety for those in the near South not used to this weather. Thought about my dad so ran the 248 for a while last night. Bob, those photos are awesome. BTW, the son loves the motor book (for his class). It's come in handy already. Anyone have a recommendation for a GPS that isn't too expensive?

TGIF!!!!! Morning Guys FifeThumbs UpThumbs Up Angel – Char & Di & Roys’s sister...everyone else who needs ‘em Sprinklin’ now going up to 70 (oh yeah, sure), it’s 54 now and the humidity makes it feel colder.  Talking rain after 11 AM tomorrow and temps might make 60.  Great...I was going to ride the Harley (to trade it in on a HONDA, Jon). Need to start cleaning out the closet and sorting out the Hot Wheels....they’re going to the Train Sale on the 20th and they will get sold. Bob – Nice pictures – I sorta remember SNOW....Banged Head. Making plans to be in Intercourse, PA on Labor Day weekend.  This will be my car club’s 69th meet (yeah, that’s why it’s at Intercourse).  I KNEW it was near Strasburg and I plan to either be early or stay later, to partake in the PA railroad museum.  I hope to be driving the Road Runner, top down and all.  Should be a decent year, definitely going to NJ in October for the 175th Fire Dept. Anniversary October 16th – Mark yer calenders!!! Thanks for that info, Don!! Check ya later!

Smilehello bob.  it looks mighty cold there in new mexico?  it went down to -1 here last night, but no snow.  did you get the basic requirements for your job from the NAV?  i learned how to smoke cigarettes and procrastinate.  my wife and i lived all over the world, only coming to illinois after i retired to take care of a sick relative.  when i got to the cold weather it made me sick, mean and nasty.(of course i did not learn any of these behaviours in the navy).  now i wish we could move to warm weather, but i cant walk, and could not sell our house if we wanted to.  so we are stuck here.  have a mth rotary plow.  will have to try it out, in case some of the southnn weather comes here.  well whole hog is waiting....your friend navyjack

Good Morning

12 degrees, 8 when we woke up. No snow on the ground.

On the plus side the cold mass is keeping the snow to the south. Chief normally I would stand with you but this time you ask for it and you may receive. My only plan for today is our friday meal out, usually in the afternoon and then we get good service and no waiting. It also means by bedtime I am more comfortable. Have a good weekend and chief better look for that snow shovel....S.J.

Good morning all,

Training got canceled (long story, very frustrating, will talk about later).  To answer Fifedog's question about the IRL, I do not think anybody could anticipate the split lasting as long as it did.  When CART first split with USAC in the late 1970s, that battle lasted about a year or two and then USAC folded its Champ car series.  The difference then was that the IMS and USAC had suffered some major losses (Tony Hulman and several USAC officials) and there was no strong leadership (and money) in the late 70s.  With the CART / IRL, both sides had money (at the time) and a strong desire to win.  Also, the IRL did not originally set out to fight CART, but when CART scheduled events the same day as the IRL ones and changed the rules so people could not run the same equipment competitively in both series, that is what really started the brew-ha-ha.  If CART had been smart, they could have run in the IRL races, qualifed for Indy under the 25-8 rule and eliminated all the small teams that were cobbled together to run at Indy the first few years.  The "split" would have been over before it got started.  What is really sad is that none of the original IRL teams are left except for AJ's.  May have been too long an answer.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana
