Mornin' Fellas

Fife - hope she is OK and no one decides to come after you later (we're dealing with this now after 3 years a lady that Susan's father tapped on 40 has decided that her carpel tunnel is due to the car accident)... don't get me started.

Not much going on here. I really am not happy that the sunroom won't be done for X-Mas, unless something miraculous happens and I have a few fellas show up a few Saturdays in a row to finish it. Had I not done what I did I would be nearing completion and would be starting to build the Christmas layout... now it seems neither will be done. Sad Really a blow to the mid-section when stuff like this happens.

Well gotta run so I can hopefully get out of here early today.

Mornin' All.

Had a late dinner with old friends last nite, went to Buca De Beppo. Did exercise a bit of self-control, but all that pasta is so gooood. Sleepy

Brent, Yes, it's a bummer that the room won't be complete for the holidays but it could have been much worse had that saw cut deeper and longer.

Gotta try to get myself in gear, need to pickup the last of the goodies for tomorrows meal. Gonna be hard cooking for such a small gathering, only 7 of us this year.

Afternoon all

I had to work late yesterday, one of the supervisors got sick so I worked for him.  Got home about 2000, and after a bite and getting the kids to bed, worked on the All Aboard panels I am going to set up at the train show this weekend.  The switches on the switch panels were not working.  On one I was able to just change out the actuator, but the other was replacing the whole switch.  Got the layout working then took it apart for transport Friday.  It is a neat concept.  I take pictures and share them.

Jim T – Yes, I won the 600, including shipping it was around $30.  I’ll have another $8 in replacement parts that I know of at this point.  Sometimes at the Train Show there will some, usually very little, AF stuff, but I’ve gotten lucky before.

Fife – I can sympathize with what you are going through.

Brent – Don’t beat yourself up too bad.  You will mend and the sun room will get done without the added pressure of a timeline.

Got to go

May God bless

Jim

Brent,

Don't blame yourself for what happened. If you rush, that could open the door to more potential accidents. Take a break and get that Christmas layout together.Smile I wouldn't miss the opportunity to build the Christmas layout for anything.

Jim,

Good luck with the 600. I found a very nice 342AC for Christmas. The seller split the engine and tender up but I got them in time. Unfortunately, they also have the box and wrapper in a separate listing. It would have been nice if they would have left everything together. Search the completed listings for 342 on ebay and the engine and tender will show up. Once it gets here, I am going to wait until Christmas to open it.

I hate when sellers break up locos and tenders.I realize it is to maximize the selling price but it continues to be apet peve of mine.

Harold,

It really makes me mad as well. The way I see it, they'd get the same amount of money when both pieces sell, so just leave them together and charge that price. I was worried that someone would buy the tender out from under me while I was buying the engine.  I'd really be upset if that happened.  Although this practice makes me mad, don't get me started on parting out good running items.

OH MY!!!!!!  Wifey just came home from MIL's with great neice [4 years old and spoiled].  Bet she is spending the night. Banged Head

LAZ, preacher's son killed a doe this AM.  Went to feed them tonight and 7 came and stood in front of me.  BTW: a big fox keeps coming out like he is going to eat corn but runs off when deer come out.  Did not think foxes eat corn.  Then another big one ran by me at the truck while I was talking to the deer.  Time to fox hunt.  Also time to shoot beavers.  They are coming from another pond and stopping up spillway.  Have had to clean it out twice [full of limbs, leaves and mud].  I guess they forgot what happend to their cousin two years ago.

Later.

Evening all

Just had a great supper, my bride made Cincinnati Chili, with Sam Adams for the beverage of choice, then oatmeal raisin cookies for dessert.  Marvelous!

Jim T – Congrats on the 342AC, you were lucky to get both pieces.  Makes you wonder why folks split them up?  I don’t know if I could wait till Christmas to open it.  You could open it and test it just enough to see if there is any problem, that sounds like a reasonable excuse!

Buckeye – I got Rich’s tanker today.  I will take it to the train show and take pictures of it on one of the layouts there.

Chief – One of the guys who work for me is a trapper and he said that foxes will eat just about anything.

Got a few things I need to take care of.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for health, family (do in-laws count?) friends, especially my train buddies, our nation and those who protect us, and for the salvation offered to us by our loving God.

May God bless

Jim

HI GYZ,

Well had dogs on the grill, no fire, good vittles!  Then took dog for walk.  Watched Amazing Shots on Outdoor Channel.  Then ran trains for 2 hrs.  NO PILE UPs.

CHIEF, fox will eat anything.  And as JUNE CLEAVER once said, please don't be so hard on the beaver.  Watch those beavers, they'll dam the whole thing up, then no deer will come.  I hope to get a buck on Monday.  Will post pics if I do?  Also CHIEF, I ordered and got the U30C NS UBoats from JIM'S TRAINS at a great price.  RUN fantastic, both dummy and powered.  I had them pulling the OIL CANs.  No Problems.

Stay Frosty,

Another night at the scope. One of the engineers did some sleuthing w/ the receiver today. We know more of what it isn't anyway. Trouble is mainly in the upper end of the band, so it's still quite usable, but we strive for perfection. Funny thing happened when I opened the building tonight. The receiver compressor has been stalling occasionally.  The cryo engineer thinks it's a bad contactor in the power control box. The building jerks a bit when you open or close (each of the 4 panels is about 20 tons) and the compressor quit at the same time, prob jostling the bad contactor.

Finally got the 4.0.2 version of Xtracad working on my Linux machine and got the 0-27 parameters loaded. Spent a lot of time last night playing w/ two different designs based off of a 4' X 6' plan I found on the web. That program sure is some fun and open source so it's free. Will save me a lot of time sitting on the floor scratching my head w/ track pieces and pins laying all around me. In one design a may be able to incorporate a reverse loop. Of course I'll need more switches for that one...

Jim - congrats on the 342AC. That engine is a beauty!

Dennis - was moved by your comments about Thanksgiving. I was thinking some of the same thoughts yesterday. There was a lot going on this year, but still even more to be thankful for.

Off and running on a fairly smooth start tonight. We are looking for organic compounds in a young stellar object that someday may be much like our sun. For those sky fanatics out there the object is in Taurus. If it stays quiet I might have a chance to clean the two new switch machines.

Happy Thanksgiving All!

Jim,

I am not sure if I want to open it before Christmas. In a way, I'd like to be sure that it is okay, but at the same time, I don't want to spoil the suprise. Given how clean the engine and tender appear, I think they will be just fine.  Even if there would be a problem, you know how resilient Gilbert steamers are.

I am also thinking of getting a digital camera for Christmas that can shoot video so that I can post some Flyer videos on youtube. I've got a lot of plans for videos, from running pieces, reviews, as well as servicing items. I think that doing video reviews of Flyer items could get more people interested in Flyer, and that would be great.

Partly cloudy and low 50's or high 40's today.  Hard to tell exactly with the wind blowing as hard as it was.

Got an e-mail off to Banks, the dressing for tomorrow prepared, no activity on trains today other than checking the front porch for the e-bay refugees that ought to be showing up any day now.

Fifi - my son's friend rolled his car on day #1 of his driver's permit!  His mom was in the car too.  Fortunately, other than the car, ego, and nerves, there were no injuries.  They were on a two lane road and he edged over to the right for on coming traffic a little too far and dropped two wheels off of the road.  Near as I can figure, he jerked the wheel left and got the front wheel back on the road, but the back wheel snagged on the edge of the pavement and snapped the car sideways.  I took my kids out and demonstrated how to get a car back on the road after that one.

Later all.

Good Evening All !

First all ....  Hope everyone has a peaceful and relaxing holiday!  We have a lot to be thankful here!  Reasonably good health, everyone seems happy and satisfied.  So many with so many other issues around us.  Some brought on by themselves, others unfortunate victims.  But, sure is a great time to reflect on all our blessings!

Real busy day at work, got a lot of backorders taken care of and prepared for the weekend.  Sure could notice a lot of people had left their jobs early, and tonight the freeways were packed.  We are going to have a quiet day, in-laws coming over.  So will have a nice dinner, probably watch a movie, and then get an introduction to the Wii system.  Chris had been saving his money up and was able to buy it for himself.  He signed up for his classes for next semester.  Looks pretty tough, College Alegebra, Chemistry, and Biology.  14 units, but they are all pretty heavy classes.  Need to get going for dinner.

Good Night and God Bless!

Reclinerized after a raid from upstairs.  Niece came charging down with Lucy behind her.  She was like the Energizer Bunny. Disapprove  Finally got wifey to take her back upstairs.  Then I fell asleep watching the beginning of a movie.  Even Lucy moved back downstairs.  Oh boy, tomorrow morning.

LAZ, started to buy one of those NS's as great price.  Got some many engines, jsut holding off.  Got a new NS engine on order from Miss Edna's [not the Genset but another new one].  Good luck on the buck.

Seems I can feed the foxes .17 or .22 mag.  Lucy and I are off to bed.  Sleep tight.

 Happy Thanksgiving!!

I had to fly to Raleigh yesterday, to pick up a truck.  Rain when I left, cloudy and gray in NC. Left FL at 0530, got back to Jax at 7 PM.  In bed at 9, up again, couldn't sleep.  Stopped outside of Fayetteville to a Hobby store off Exit 49 on 95.  Nice selection, will have to go again sometime.

Well, my answer came back about PHL, not great, but not terrible either.  Will have to ponder it and decide by 15 Dec.

Fife - glad she is ok, thank goodness mine dosen't want to drive --- yet.

Thanks for all the prayers, my Princess is doing well, glad she is better and HOME.

So much to be thankful for, especially youze giz here.

I'll be up later to start cooking and watch the Macys Parade in NYC - a family tradition here.  Dad went there one year and supplied the helium for the balloons.

Well, I'll clean the train room and then go back to bed when I get tired.  Still wound up from the long road trip.

RT - Thanks for the invite - hope to get up there sometime, without having to repair the car - long story for another time!

Giants game later, too!!

Happy T-Day!

Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving!

Here is a link that is appropriate for today:  George Washington's Thanksgiving Declaration  Interesting that it states: "whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer ".

It sure nice to have the time off.  I hope to of course eat well, but I don't think we are going to have one of my favorites, oyster dressing.  At least we won't be eating Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, the delicacy of Roseville, NC.

Morning all and Happy Thanksgiving!  Woke this morning at 0400.  Was going to head to the gas station and pick up a paper, when I collected some quarters and got in the car, drive to the end of the driveway and there is a Thanksgiving Day paper!  Mind you, we don't normally have the paper delivered as I read it at the hospital and spend more time there anyway.

Jim, You may want to check out some of the DSLR cameras that have come on the scene lately.  The Nikon D90 that I got was the first with HD video and was soon followed by Canon and others.  While the D90 is on the higher price range, the technology has transferred down to some of the less expensive ones.  This would allow you to both take high grade still photos and to take high quality video.  While they are not as good as a full fledged video camera because the functions are less user friendly, they are capable of taking the occasional video.  Just depends on what your needs are.  Also, I read a review on some of the smaller video cameras and you will want to make sure of the camera's low light (indoor) capabilities.

Chief, I think you must have more engines than rolling stock by nowBow  Glad you have what makes you happy.  I have a whole lot of Postwar items that I may thin in future years, but find them really neat to have because of the craftsmanship and longevity.  I will always hold onto the 1949 collection, but have added substantially to the herd beyond that.  Perhaps my son will use that stuff....hey, it was durable for all our childhoods!

Well, time to look over the adds.  I am on call and hope not to have anything to do today.  Do have a heart to do in the morning.  With regards to Thanksgiving and Prayer, I have so much to be thankful for, it take too long to list.  I am always thankful that it is not me on the table to be operated on....and mindful that they needed to be treated like our own family.  Also thankful for the many blessings God has given me, none of which I deserve.

God Bless,
Dennis

Just about the end of the shift. Spent some time w/ a few of  the switches. I wired up the first of the 1122 controllers w/ the new triple wire. Of the 10 switches I have, 4 are now functional. One of the 1121's was pretty much just parts and another of the 1122's is headed that way. There is something to be said for buying new, but I got 7 in a big box of track for $20 so I can't complain. I learned what cleaners NOT to use on the plastic. Fortunately I discovered this on the worst of the 1122's. Interestingly, of the five controllers I have, I have all 3 possible types represented. Apparently there was an early and late 1121 and then the 1122. If I can get one more left working I should have enough to set up the basics of one of the layouts.

Been playing human thermostat this evening. With the blower out in the computer room I have to watch the temperature and open or close the door to the outside or the equipment starts complaining.

Dennis - hope you have a quiet day. Where'd the paper come from BTW?

Hope everyone has a good day. I'll make a turkey sandwich when I get up:) Friend is supposed to have me over for leftovers this weekend, so I wont exactly miss out.

Morning.  Happy Thanksgiving.  Sunny today [finally].

We had a reject Yankee from FL on our radar before he landed at RDU.  He sneaked through Roseyville and he thought he was "undetected".  Since he was harmless, we let him through.  BTW: I have never visited the train store in Fayetteville.  I hear good things about it.

Bob, I guess you will get to see Santa before anyone else does with that powerful telescope.

HELP!!!!  4 year old in the house [Pam's Greatniece].  Burg and Lucy going crazy.  She was "singing and dancing" this AM and Burg was singing along [4 year old and lab, what a sound].  Now she is watching the Macys Parade.  Think I will go to the pond for peace and quite.

Fifey, I prefer PLOP PLOP FIZZ FIZZ.

Turkey, Ham, Butter Beans, Mashed Potatoes, Dressing, Gravy, Green Beans, Sweet Potato Casserole topped with Pecans, Breads, Chicken Salad, Cranberry Sause and various deserts.

BTW: Mac and Cheese, we ship to the Roseyville Ghetto which is named for the founder of the new world and somewhere in Snohio.

Later.

40 today, thats it. And that S word is in the forecast.

We will be dining at # 1 sons house today. I feel a little down as we always had dinner here. But you know how kids are. Everybody wants to do something different.

Chief - Put out a salt block and double your "listening audience" of deer.

A fox will eat most anything, dead or alive if they can handle them. This included kittens. The only way our wild cats are controlled here!

LAZ - Part of our family tradition on Thanksgiving is after dinner at #1 daughters and SIL's who live in town, is for the SIL and I to take a walking tour around the town.

The only problem is he being the Commonwealth Attorney (County Prosecutor) he knows about everyone, so we spend as much time standing and talking as walking. Still very enjoyable.

Off to #1 Daughters.
