Fairly overcast today after the rain last night. Pretty humid though, but at least it's not 110. Busy morning w/ lab and doctor's appointments. After seeing the gastroenterologist today, they want to schedule a procedure. OK. Can you come in tomorrow morning for an upper GI endoscopy?! Sure...no time like the present. What's one more procedure anyway. So far blood sugar has been fine. They want me to check it fairly often.

Ole Timer - I'm w/ you on the Train Festival. Brief article in Trains had me drooling. #4449, two 2-8-4s, a Pacific, 3 tank engines, and an 1860's replica all in steam. Wow.

cnwDoug - have a good time in Ohio. Have fun at the Air Force Museum if you get to go.

Another appointment and then I need to go in to work for a bit (university, not scope). Apparently we may be in line to get some stimulous money. They need my info on the crane repairs and replacing the seals and heat tape. These are both projects that have been shelved due to lack of funds.  May be spending some more time back up on the roof of the scope eventually. Time to eat before I go (starting to really dislike eating). Check back later.

Re-watching Buerhle's no-hitter tonight. Wish I saw it live. Boy, does he pitch fast. Don't think we'll make it to Dayton, It'll be two hours away from Tiffin. I did find on the map that Ohio has a Rolesville. Wink

Good Evening

A on/off rainy day still in the 70s.

Did some early morning shopping and then off with my friend to a hobby shop and then our favorite train store. He found a car at the LHS that had sold out at the store. As  we were leaving he hands me an Atlas Detroit and Toledo Shore Line caboose and says happy birthday. They had gone in and out of the train store before he could get one but this LHS still had one. I felt a little overwhelmed but later he bought a Conrail engine and I had a caboose here at home to give him. Thats what friends do. Banilla is ready and waiting for the thingy...S.J.

Dennis--

How about some pics with that new Nikon?

Well Jon, I finally did it.  You probably were beginning to think I was full of it and didn't have a layout!  Sorry it has taken till now to post.  I did it on a seperate post as I shot it in RAW and figure it will take up too much space.  Bob will most likely frown upon that.  Have plenty to go with scenery.  I know that will make a huge difference with the way it looks.  Right now, I have two reversing loops on the main layout.  One is hidden in the center of the mountain, the other is "hidden" in a set of yard leads.

Was a busy day with two emergency cases on top of the scheduled ones.  Also have another additional case tomorrow, so it will be busy.  I am on call and already have had to field some phone calls and take care of a few issues.  Hope to sleep till morning, but I'm always a page from going in.

Have a great weekend everyone.  God Bless,
Dennis

Running late, sorry - I'll catch up on the pot tomorrow or this weekend, I promise!  Wife's sisters received and took their genetic test kits today and overnighted them back to the hospital, so we are moving another step closer to (hopefully) a cure.  Got some $$$ for taking a certifcation test and it showed up in the paycheck finally, so I bought that xbox I wanted for the past 2 years Smile  Nice chatting with RT, SJ, Doug and Charlie for a while.  Gotta hit the hay and working Saturday too.  Prayers for all and Tardis is ready to go, so let's hit the "road" Smile

Howdy all.  Back from lake, went to dinner meeting [filet, jumbo shrimp and chops with mashed potaotes and string beans].  Cooked by the top winner of Iron Chef.  Not bad and free.  May go back to the lake house tomorrow PM.  Wife and her youngest sister want me to go and drive them around on the pontoon.  Come back Saturday PM.  We'll see.  Got new power pole, transformer and etc at lake house.  Running three phase by the house.  Went reclinerizing as soon as I got home tonight.  Lucy woke me up to go to bed.  Wes, I insulated and covered the walls to a walk-in attic to run trains into from the bedroom up stairs.  Works great.  Go for it.  Later.

Too many stops to make today. There was some brief talk about me going up to the scope to shepherd the engineers on Monday, but after today no way. Tuckered me out pretty good. Prob should stick around anyway in case they want to do more tests. And of course there is this entertaining procedure in the morning. It's progress so I'll not complain. So far now blood sugar and BP is fine, so there does indeed appear to be something else at play.

cnwDoug - Dayton will still be there. Personally I'd be tempted to go the other direction to the train festivalWhistling

Dennis - Layout looks great! You were able to find time to do all that and you're a doctor? And you have kids? You have my eternal respect, sir. I like the plexiglass cover over the LEDs. Is that for switch controls?

Brutus - like to hear the sound of progress on your front! Prayers still coming by the carload!

I'll prob be out of it for at least part of the day tomorrow. Maybe the Flyer will come tomorrow and I'll have something to peruse later. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

High 80's and getting muggy again here.

Getting green beans out of the veggie patch and the roma tomatoes are starting to come in.  Drying sage and dill too.

Wes - I did a similar project in my last house.  Converted attic space into a bedroom.  Like Kpolak says, when you insulate the roof, leave air space betwen the roof deck and the top of the insulation.  Allows air to circulate and controls condensation.  Check for vents under your eves too. I used kraft faced fiberglass, then stapled some visquine over it for an extra layer of vapor barier.  I think you said this was over a garage.  Check your fire codes.  You will probably have to have 1/2" drywall in the garage celing.

Not much train activity.  Yard work, and had to bury one of our old cats last night.  She used up the last of her 9 lives after 14 years.

I did stop at the local hobby shop and pick up a copy of 'How to Repair Modern Toy Trains' today.  Good basic book, but not very detailed.  The last item on the troubleshooting lists is usually "take the train to your authorized service sataion".

I've pieced together a train set from about 1962.  I'll try to get pictures for SPF this week.

Later all.

Almost lost all my trains this morning and the house too I guess.

Well went to bed about 11:30 up at 3:30 as the ceiling fan in the bedroom was shooting sparks. ( its only about 2 months old) (if you all remember it was the one that was a pain to put up) anyway its now down and in the garbage ( no receipt or box anymore so I lose) acually woke up to wife screaming I didn't see anything so thought she was having one of her nightmares again. she got up turned it off I said your dreamiing as it was on when I first woke up and I saw nothin so turn it back on to prove her wrong and it started sparking again. well I guess I proved myself wrong there but glad this was one time she wasn't asleep as it was too hot because of the ac not working.

All fine now. glad I took ceiling fan down now wife and I can try to go to sleep but doubt either of us will now. Have a good night you all.

Well, today I will continue putting my layout back in place; the water line break this month really put a crimp in everything, but it created opportunity as well.  The quickie layout that you can see in a video under Sunday photofun, could not have been done so quick if I hadn't borrowed from the damaged main layout.

When the water line burst in the bathroom, the fortunate thing was it woke me up within a few minutes (sounding like a shower was running). The other fortunate thing was the water stayed mostly in the bathroom and barely affected the hardwood floors and didn't get into the subfloors or the carpet. Most of the water flowed down a vent and rained into the basement, BUT, right onto the train table and where most of the switches, transformer and trains were (and this was very unfortunate).

It took two hours to get the track up, wipe it off and dry the trains, etc. I waited a few days to test the transformers and remaining electrical output to the layout, and there has been no electrical shorts or other apparent damage.

It will take some time to get everything back in place, rewired and connected and fine tuned.

In the interim I worked up a compact portable layout for an office celebration and open house.  Kids played with the trains and got to run them, throw switches, uncouple and pick the route they wanted to run.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the low 80s after the morning fog burns off.  Well, my last game of the season finished on a good note.  We won the first game of the tourney 2-1.  We had 16 people show up and the other team only had 11.  We basically just wore them down.  We got one goal in the first half and one early in the second.  I played keeper the rest of the game.  I made one good save but with one minute left in the game, the other team did score on an upper 90 in the near post.  We ran out the clock to seal the deal.  I only regret I will not be able to be at the next two games if we go that far.

I got a double dip at home as both the CTT and the TCA Quarterly showed up.  They will make good reading for my Atlanta trip.  I am not sure what kind of computer access I will have next week so I will have to check if and when I can post.

I had the regular fare on the dining car this morning.  Beacon is lit.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Good Morning

Sun and 80 today.

The big real steam engines event starts today. Decided not to go. Small town, Acres of people, I  am just not the large crowd type when all the other irritations are added in. Plus us old folk grew up seeing steam engines. Enjoy your Friday, one more and July is gone...S.J.

RT,

That would have scared me as well. It is probably better that you put the fan in the garbage rather than try to get another one. If that fan had a problem,  I wouldn't want another for fear that it might do the same thing. Glad to hear that you and your wife are okay.

Not much planned for today. I went to Lowes last night to order the wood that I need. The wood will be about $120 for 60 eight foot 2x4s. I was going to have them deliver it, but they want $70 just for delivery.Shock So, I'll go pick it up tonight. I will put the table saw together while I wait for the 322 to get here today.

Aloha all. Sunny and warm on my day off. RT, glad you and the Mrs are OK. Prairetype, water damage stinks. I had issues earlier this year. Hope everything is drying out and recoverable.  A buddy in the business has priced a new a/c and furnance for me - a tad more than I expected but at least I saved the cash. Not much more left after first college tuition bill. LOL. Off to Ohio tomorrow - TGIF!!

Hey guys, First would like to thank all of you for your help!!!  I really appreciate it !  It has helped me a lot.  The site had over a 100 hits yesterday, I think we may be under control.  Always a lot of work there.

Glad to see the progress with the medical issues!  I havn't posted much recently but that doesn't mean the concerns have not continued.  Brutus and Bob, make sure you guys continue with the updates.  Of course these are the things that really matter!

Surprised to see so much train work progress in the summer!  As everyone says the planning stage is probably the most important.  I know when I was planning mine, I made a list of goals, which also included negative goals as well.  (example: No duck unders, it was really difficult and frustrating at times to avoid.  But created a pause in my subsequent planning and building to analyize do I want to comprimise the goal for convience?  Also,  wish I would have been more particular regarding the wiring.  I started with drawings and schematics, but they quickly become out dated.  I would make sure I seperate wiring bundles, Power Distribution, Accessories, Switches, and Lighting.  Would make subsequent trouble shooting easier.  And also, using plenty of terminal strips, (they are cheap), and identifying what they are and voltage.  I tried various methods but ended up writing on the bottom of layout with a marker.

Speaking of wiring, I FINALLY, finished connecting my signal gates (2) and crossing lights (2) using relays and isolated track wiring, eliminating the IR detectors.  Operation is significantly improved!  Involved a total of 11 track sections, also found a couple of places that the neg from the track power got connected to the inside rail instead of the outside, which created some issues.  The relays really worked well.  They are 12v DC auto relays, paid $2 each for.  Powered them up using an old wall wort xfmr.  (Recommend saving all those unattached wall worts that everyone ends up with, they can be useful.)

I also got a phone call from John Baker, (UK) yesterday.  That was cool !  Enjoyed the conversation!  We sure covered a lot of topics, as expected he is really a nice guy!  While I was talking to him, received another call from a customer.  Had to put John on hold for a second, and the incoming call was from Hawaii.  Really peculiar to be talking to London on one line, and Hawaii on another at the same time, definetly covering distance!

Again, I want to thank all you guys for your assistance!  It has been a hassle to try and chase down some of the "ghost problems"

Take care, those of you fortunate enough, enjoy the MI. show!

Don

Morning all.  Shave and shower time.  Sprayed Roundup in some area on my block that I maintain [keeps me from having to weedeat it].  Had rain last night [well, early this AM].  Mowed shoulder on School Street which is th street to the pond and some poor African-American homes [they are not in Town limits].  Town seems to forget that street.  Gave some good bait to some fire ants along the way.  Picked a bucket full of Tomatoes.  Taking a box of tomatoes, cucumbers and hot peppers downtown to County Atty [buddy of mine].  Also a bag of squash and two cantalopes.  Got to run few errands.  Probably go to the lake tonight.  Need to ship out some JD box car.  Enjoyed running it.  Later.

Afternoon everyone.  Been a busy week so far and I am still on call till Monday.  Have a few things to take care of this weekend.  One patient is on support, but we should be able to wean her tomorrow and then, only emergencies will keep me from other tasks.  Want to tie up some wires and make things a bit neater.  Then, I have to diagnose that turnout and get it straightened before moving onto scenery.  Have all the ideas in my head, but have to make the work something fun that the kids will help me with.

My son's former teacher bought him one of the butterfly homes that is a mesh "box" habbitat.  They send you live catapillars that you keep in a special cup till they form the crystalids.  Then, pin the sheet with the crystalids onto the inside of the mesh and wait.  Well, yesterday they started to appear.  Kind of neat to watch, but the kids really like it and another opportunity for them to learn.  We are trying to expose them to a lot of things you can't get on a computor or in  a classroom.  We also have plans for them to spend some time at a friends ranch.  Want them to learn about cattle and horses as well as see some animals born.

SJ, you may have seen the giants of steam in your younger years, but they are still great to look at.  For me, unless something was keeping me from going, I'd be there.  I don't like the crowds, but I'd find a way to get over it for a little while.  Even if I had to resort to hanging out when they were departing town, something about seeing 70 year old equipment that makes the ground rumble.

God Bless,

Dennis

Wes,
I would install a solar powered gable vent fan inside that gable vent. This will suck any and all hot air out of that space. You won't need a very large one either. I would HIGHLY recommend the durovent as well. This will provide the necessary air space to allow for air circulation. Oh and that gable vent will suck the air out of those side cavities as well. And your AC will be more efficient as well.

If you are using faced insulation there is no need for an additional vapor barrier. That is over kill and could actually create a positive preasure situation inside your house which could cause moisture inside your walls causing your house to rot from the inside out. I was thinking about doing what you are thinking about doing and my carpenter told me he wouldn't do the work on the sunroom if I did that, as he couldn't gaurantee his work.

The only concern I would have is space, but if you think it would work then I say go for it!

Dennis, we've birthed butterflys, caterpillars, ant farms, just about every critter habitat possible via mail.Your kids should love 'em. Jon, sweet corn is not as available in our part of Illinois this season. I can't recall whether it was too wet earlier or too dry now. Off to Ohio at about 4 am tomorrow...

Good Evening

81 today, I think. No rain yet but storms tomorrow. Could make the big steam train show quite messy. Some that went yesterday in the showers said rain, mud and soot do not make a pleasant mix. I will a spend lot of Saturday, at least till late afternoon helping at the  train store. I don't expect a busy day as a lot of the regulars will be at the trains. So banilla at the ready waiting for Brutus....S.J.

My 322 arrived early this afternoon from Marty C. of Marty's Trains in Oceanside, NY. I am very impressed with the 322 and even more so with Marty's  desire to please his customers. When I bought the 322, it was clearly missing the eccentric rod on the left side in the pics. Marty went above and beyond the call of duty by replacing the rod free of charge before shipping the 322. I didn't even ask him about that. That made my day right there.Thumbs UpThumbs Up

I also went to Lowes tonight to buy the wood for benchwork, so I'll get started on that Sunday if I am not scheduled to work. The LHS is having a 25% off sale tomorrow, so I might stop in before work to buy some track.

Chief,

I am considering buying Soundstop to put on top of the plywood. I know you've talked about it before. Is it worth it? What is the average price of a sheet?
