Sun is up and low 80s for the day. Temp wise one of the coolest Julys ever in our area. Global warming! Bah Hum Bug. Don't believe it. Just an excuse to spend Gov.t money and make us pay more for things we do not need. Yes I am in favor of clean air but the two are not the same. Experts for everything. Bah.

Very busy week at work. We hired two new people this last month, to work on WWTP types of projects so you know what is still working.
Big weekend for the family. Grandson's baptism tomorrow.

Certainly been an surprising day! Started off pleasant enough, wife and I went down and had coffee at the motel lobby, and planned the day. They got me a pair of crossing gates for the layout. Fantastic ! Then it started.....
Went to have breakfast and on the way the brake sensor really was squealling. We plan on leaving for home Sat. AM. Probably a 8 hr drive, right at 480 miles. And, a lot of that is some rather significant grades, as much as 7% downhill. So better get it checked. Took 1 1/2 hrs for the check, seems everyone needed tires to. The place was really busy and they would mount a set and roll a car out every 20 minutes. They had 2 bays going. Our car pulled in, wheels pulled everything checked, then wheels put back on, car buttoned up and moved to parking lot. Thought everything was going to be good. But, not to be. Front brake was down to .001, so pads and rotor turned. Of course they didn't have the pads in the shop, and would take 2 to 3 hours.
So do we sit there and wait? Or, call a cab, or take the city bus? Decided on the cab, to the Nevada State Railway Museum. Called for the cab, 20 minutes later called again, in the meantime the bus went rolling by. Waited, waited for the cab, then decided to go with the next bus, only would require 1 transfer. Waiting now for the Bus or Cab, see a parts truck pull in and deliver the parts. Check with the desk, they say the car will be ready in about an hour. So decide on just wait for the car. (Last day of trip and time just slipping by! Ugh!!) So wait another 1/2 hour and find out that the wrong pads came. So took another 1 1/2 hours. We now are watching the cabs running up and down the street, none of which stopped where we were! Finally a little after 3 the car is done! So off we go to the Train Museum.
The Nevada State RR Museum in Carson City, looked pretty good from the outside. The hours had been revised to 3 days a week due to budget cuts. We get there and its only going to be open for an hour, OK. We'll just have to be quick. The guide suggested we go to the barn first, because the guy may close early. So in the Barn they have the V & T INYO Steam Engine. The last wood burning engine still in operation. Was it ever beautiful! Extremely Ornate. Here's the problem... No light on in the barn!!! One door 1/2 open, and about 4 large halogen lights on. The rest were all off! Tried to take some pictures, but just too large of an area, and the available lighting was all wrong. Also, there was not any ventilation on in the building, that made it uncomfortable, but would have been OK if some lights were on. The barn had 4 maybe 6 bays, and the only area that was visitor accessible was the first one with the INYO. All the others were filled with stock, a couple of steam engines, but you couldn't see them! No lights on, and areas all fenced off ! Left the barn, went out and checked the turntable out, then into the main building. They had 6 pieces of stock in the main area. 1 engine, 3 wood sided pass cars, 2 hand cars. Also probably about 12 G Scale models of past engines on the V & T., and then a display of "Model Trains" had samples of all scales except nothing 3 rail. Not even a mention or acknowledgement. Took about 20 minutes and we had gone through the accessible area of the barn and main display area. The gift shop had a collection of books, Thomas stuff, and that was it. Of ALL the train museums I've seen this was the worst! And it really didn't need to be, they could have turned on a few lights!! And it would have been much better.
Then off to the Nevada State Museum, and former home of the Carson City Mint. WOW !! is that place fantastic !!!! Only was there for a half hour then it was closing time. So we will delay are departure and going back there in the morning.
Have been hearing on the local radio all week about "Hot August Nights" in Reno. We had been to it before by accident and really enjoyed it. The radio was saying over and over, starting the celebration Friday Night, and running until August 9th. So that sounded really great! Off we go up to Reno, (about 30 miles), and go down town, the barracades, trash cans all over the place. But no vendors, tourists, streets aren't blocked off, nothing! What's going on ? The festival doesn't actually start until next Wednesday, but the radio was doing a pre-celebration or Fifties/Sixties music begining today! Ugh !!!
So now what? Chief calls, talk a bit, then Chris asked what it was he was involved in? Told him about the battery chargers for boats, and they have them at Cabellas, etc.. So since we haven't been to one, and there is one in Reno. That's where we headed.
So all in all, day was nothing like planned! But had a very enjoyable day nevertheless. The important things were all in place!
I think I will definetly avoid Carson City/Reno on future birthdays. This one the brakes, the last time I was here happened to be the same week. Managed to get a speeding ticket on my birthday coming from Lake Tahoe down to Reno. (about a 7% grade, of course it was the last mile that I got pulled over.)
So that was my day.

Talked to Don earlier. He was waiting for a brake job to be done on his car. Yes, goes off on vacation with warning clips chirping.
Baseball game was delayed until 8 PM due to rain. We had hot dogs, hamburgers and fried chicken. Had our own box suite. Took advantage of it. In fact, Roseyville [staff and PD] took over the suite for the night. It kept drizzling rain off and on. We stayed high and dry. Roseyville knew their leader would take care of them.
Sir J, a coney is the only Yankee thing that is good.

I can't drink caffiene late at night or I would be up through the whole night! Bob, just tell them you want copies. Some places will do this free of charge for one copy btw. Others will want $$$ for them. It's a good idea to keep copies of this stuff for the future, that's all. I bought a variable set from Radio Shack last month, it's pretty good. It has some presets and you can also program those as well as use a dial to set to different temps. Gives you the set temp and actual temp. Man, it sure heats up fast, too!
We're waiting for information about the two possible donors (right now), her sisters - if one is a match and also passes a physical and lab tests, then maybe this month Based on the preliminary results, one of them is already seen as a possible donor.

Played with Thomas last night - new tether made, soldered that wire to the correct side of the correct resistor on the whistle board (if I didn't cook it), just need to solder the connections and seal them and close up Thomas, add a resistor for the line to the whistle, and make the tether connections inside. I put tiny zip ties on the inside, around the tether ends. It holds it in place and can't pull out due to the added size. All the ERR board connections are with a screwdriver. Really only have like an hour of work left, but didn't get to it tonight.
Working OT tomorrow then over to Jeff's house to help him put live wells on his boat and do a couple little odd jobs on it. I think it's about done then, just needs upholstering then. He has a guy who will do it for him, when he is ready. We have had so much rain this year!
BTW - could see the Disney train from work, it's over at St. Louis Union Station. There were some big crowds today. I'll check it out tomorrow as I leave work and see if it is calming down. Might take our kids over Sunday? We'll see, I'm not sure how interested they are really. One good thing, I can park at work and it's already paid for, lol!

Well the little field trip up to Kitt Peak went fairly well. Only had one episode. Didn't really incapacitate me, just kinda felt and knew it was going on. I think dinner after I got back did worse. Always after I eat. Things may be on a bit of an upswing, but not out of the woods yet. Exchanged students enjoyed the tour though and it was good to get out.
cnwDoug - the Bluesmobile! Awesome! (OK, this car's got pickup...) And another scope for the Big Island? Haven't heard of that one. Used to keep up on this stuff thru the Sky and Telescope we used to get at work, but they've dropped all the magazines now. Have to look that one up.
Brutus - your coffee recipe sounds like you are on my diet. Does your solder gun have a variable setting? If it doesn't you will have to go carefully w/ circuit boards and what not. Weller makes an inexpensive adjustable solder station w/ a pencil iron that goes for around $35 - 50. I've used it for the heavy tube radio stuff, all the train work so far, and some board stuff. Can get you the model # if interested. And good advice on the records. I had the heart hospital send all their records to my doc so I should see if I can get copies from her when this wraps up (when being the big question). How soon does the wife go in for her procedure?
Never really thought of the Chief w/ an accent, but know that I've heard him he sounds exactly as I would expect. Liked the comment that Rolesville was the smallest but up and coming. Keep it going Chief!

IIABSDISEI with temps in the low 80s. Happy birthday, Don B.! The "saucy wench" and I took it easy today and did some shopping around Columbus. We went to an outlet mall, antique store and Waldenbooks. Wife was quite happy with what she got. Track was dry at Kentucky Speedway, but ground seepage wiped out all practice and qualifications. Tried to get tickets at advertised price, but finally found out it was only available thru the on-line outlet, not over the phone. We will leave earlier tomorrow and get tickets at gate (never a sell out) assuming they have the race. May check track activity before leaving. If no practice by the time we want to leave, may just stay home instead of a long drive for nothing. Race may be postponed until Sunday. I see where Michael Schumacher is going to drive for Ferrari again. Not a smart move IMHO as he has been away for a couple of years. i have seen too many racers "unretire" with disastrous or fatal consequences (Mark Donohue comes to mind). I had the regular fare on the dining car this morning. Beacon is lit and I can drive. Lord knows I have had enough seat time this week. I hope everyone has a good day. (And, Chief, he-he-he).

Kurt, these were the real deal - complete with Ectoplastic Residue emergency drain. Caution: noxious fumes. and they had a TV Batmobile - and all sorts of other movie vehicles - and 200 'regular' cars' like a 71 Dodge Charger SE with a 440 for only 17,700. - didn't buy it though.

Another summer day, low 80s. Got out early and with grannys help got the porch post's painted before the sun reached us. Only thing outside the house I have to paint. End of the month means coney month will be over tonite. So of course I had two 99 cent coneys for supper. Put a penny on a sting, yes I've heard of that but it was not on my mind at the time.
