Anjdevil2, thanks for looking at my layout picture.  Sorry, but I don't know anyone in New Jersey.  That layout picture was taken by a good friend of mine.  I need to learn how to take digital pics so I can do it myself.

 Hey Guys,

Just a quick check in..testing some MTH SP E-6 ABA's seem to be ok so far, but when I turn up the power, the speakers get all crackly.  I have it on 1/2 power on my LW...soooo it's ok on halfsies..

SP - Nice picture in that "other" magazine.  Do you have kin in New Jersey?  I served with a guy named Chip with the fire company.  I knew he had relatives in CA...

Started taxes tonight as well....Banged Head more money for you "experienced ex-workers"Smile,Wink, & GrinLaugh

Jim - email sent

I've been trying to think of something that I could bash into small bits that wouldn't cost me my job, my freedom, my family, my friends, my wife, my house, my car, my life, or anything else of value to me... result... a pack of crackers... Sad Could hack away at some firewood, but I don't have any aged enough to justify splitting it... and cutting down a tree isn't on my priority list (see list of things that it could cost me above)... alot of pent up frustration right now and just can't find a way to relax... THAT my friends is sad, truely and utterly sad... working on the layout isn't even enjoyable because I'm so stressed I can't think clearly when it comes to figuring out little projects... Sigh Hmmm... maybe I could buy an old caprice and enter a demolision derby...

RT,

        I love Dirty Jobs, but it just bothers me to see these cars get destroyed.  The only apparent damage was to the passenger side door and fender, and a simple reaplacement could have saved it.  It was kind of amusing to see the difficulty that they encountered trying to get the engine to drop out though.Smile,Wink, & Grin  I have been working on my GT, which is pictured below. Trust me, if it was a Sunfire, I'd be cheering them on!  Nothing serious happened to Mike, nor would I wish for anything serious to happen.  He was using a grinder on the side of the boat, and he got a little sea sick.  They should have Mike host Extreme Trains on the History channel. I think that his style is just right for the show.

Good Evening All

Still windy. Not much else has happened today except my Hogwarts coach arrived so with five cars I think it's  done. I will just sit and wait for the Thingy. Banilla is waiting...S.J.

Charlie, glad you posted this for everyone.  I saw it earlier today on the other Forum.  My life has been touched by the 4449 several times.  First when it came to California as the Freedom Train around Christmas of that year. We chased it by auto when it left here all the way to Yuma, Arizona (over 250 miles).  Since then I have been witness to several trips that they ran to and from Southern California.  There was the anniversary of Union Station, The Daylight to the Worlds Fair in St. Louis I think.  A couple of trips to the California State Railroad Museum for two Railfairs and use in the movie "Tough Guys" with the late Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.  I even got a cab ride on this last trip as part of the pilot crew that took the train from L.A. to Ferrum, California (near the Salton Sea) a distance of over 100 miles in the cab.  I was cleaning out some old magazines today and the first thing that I saw was a 1986 copy of Railfan Magazine with a feature story about, what else?, You guessed it.  All about filming the Tough Guys movie down in the desert.  And think, I almost threw the magazines away.  After that filming job, I got a ride on the 4449's train from near Los Angeles to Fresno, California on it's way back to Portland. Oregon. Part of that trip was over the famous Tehachapi loop. I doubt if I will be able to make this trip but I have some wonderful memories of past ones.  I have two models of the engine.  A Williiams scale brass one and the latest is the new MTH Premier model in Proto 2.  It pulls the 7 daylight cars I have.  I love this old engine.

Brent,

           Are you using the PS3 for movies, or are you also interested in playing games?  If you are looking for some suggestions concerning games, send me an email.

Jack,

          I haven't really had time to think about the next layout. I know that I want to use indoor/outdoor carpet for ground cover instead of grass paper.  I also would like the layout to be higher than 13" from the floor.

I have finally finished taking the old layout down.  Never again will I use nails for benchwork.  I also tried to install a variable delay wiper switch in the Sunfire today, but I gave up when I discovered that a previous owner glued the tilt lever into the column.SoapBox  Did anyone watch Dirty Jobs at 4PM this afternoon?  I got very upset set when I saw Mike using a torch to cut the engine and transmission out of a red Probe GT.  I felt better though when I saw what happened to Mike when he was on the fishing boat!

Doug ... yea I use pic hanger wire for the general cable but wanted the looped end cables for crane and hook work on MOW . They work and look perfect ... believe me I tried tying an/or twisting the loops other ways ... NO WAY ... LOL . If they have the plastic coating I mini torch them a bit to remove it . I waited until end of fishing season and bought when wal and K mart clearanced them for little of nothing . Take a tiny bit of glue and cover the twisted area and paint it silver or black . Looks just like the real ones for MOW or winch work with loops on both ends .

TrainFestival 2009 News

"Daylight" Steam Locomotive to Attend TrainFestival 2009 in Owosso Michigan

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(March 24, 2009 - Owosso, MI) The "World's Most Famous Steam Locomotive" will travel from it's home in Portland, OR 2500 miles to Owosso, MI for America's Largest Celebration of Railroading in July. Southern Pacific steam locomotive no. 4449 known as the "Daylight" will appear at TrainFestival 2009 in Owosso, MI July 23-26. The massive undertaking to organize this train is being jointly coordinated by The Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso, MI, The Friends of the 4449 of Portland, OR and The Friends of the 261 of Minneapolis, MN.
TrainFestival 2009 is America's Largest Celebration of Railroading and will include 8 steam locomotives under steam, vintage and modern diesel/electric locomotives, various train rides, huge model train layouts, miniature train rides, art exhibit, locomotive cab tours, railroad vendors and much more. This family event is being held as a fund raiser to keep operating Pere Marquette steam locomotive no. 1225. This locomotive owned by the Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso, MI is due for Federal Railroad Administration re-certification in 2010. This locomotive is best known as the steam locomotive portrayed in the animated movie "The Polar Express".
The Southern Pacific Daylight no. 4449 will travel across country on an Amtrak sponsored trip hauling thousands of passengers on this rare excursion. The locomotive and train will travel through many cities along the way including Spokane, Fargo, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Lansing.  A special excursion will be operated on July 24 originating from TrainFestival 2009, tickets are available online. The locomotive will be on display during the event for visitors to photograph, visit with the crew as well as explore the cab.
Southern Pacific no. 4449 was built in 1941 as a GS-4 "Northern" type locomotive. A 4-8-4 wheel arrangement, she is 110' long, 10' wide and 16' tall. The locomotive and tender weighs 433 tons, and it operates with a boiler pressure of 300 psi. Her eight 80" diameter drivers and unique booster truck can apply 5,500 horsepower to the rails and exceed 100 mph.
The only remaining operable "streamlined" steam locomotive of the Art Deco era, No. 4449 pulled the famous Southern Pacific first class "Daylight" passenger trains between Los Angeles and San Francisco over the scenic Coast Route and then on to Portland until 1955. Retired to static display at Oaks Park in 1958, most thought SP 4449 would never run again.
In 1974, she was selected to pull the American Freedom Train throughout the United States, and was subsequently rebuilt. Southern Pacific no. 4449 ran for three years to the delight of over 30 million people. She is arguably one of the most beautiful locomotives ever built -- and kept that way by the all-volunteer Friends of SP 4449!
More information and tickets are available online at www.trainfestival2009.com or by calling (989) 725-9464.
Rock Island what you do is now put out a notice (note) "I know your probally not the responcible party but the pond is now off limits to all as I'm tired of picking up trash left behind by a few. "
And add to it "Our insurance does not allow neighbors in the pond", like the notices you see in car repair shops. Approve
Doug and Ole Timer - For fencing on farm pasture I used stick matches, cut off the striker, stuck them in a piece of foam, and spray painted them black. Them poked holes in the foam top of the layout and glued them in place. For wire I used ribbon dental floss to simulate ribbon type electric fence. Both are close to O scale.
Mike C - Pour two shots of Virginia Gentleman, drink one and pore the other on the toe. Seriously, that sounds like pain of the worst kind. Wow!!
Jack - Glad to hear Don and I didn't bore everyone. Thanks.
RT - Lost my memo. Was it grits or scrabble you like with your fried eggs and toast? Oh, here is the memo. The winner is scrapple! Dinner
See all later on the Tardis.
Hey Guys...
Up to 78 today and mostly cloudy...
Busy day today at work and home ... business is starting pick up a bit and of course the trains.....
After making dinner, I ran over to Hobby Lobby to get a presentation case for a pre-ordered Wizard of Oz car for the wife's boss.  I had some old GarGraves track the LTS was going to ditch, so I kept it and trimmed it to fit the case.  I wanted to ballast it, but Mrs didn't want to get too involved with it.  I thought it came out pretty nice...
Sold a few more things last night, trying to price the LGB is making me (more) crazy Banged Head
Devil lost to Philly last night, now I getting concerned about the playoffs (9 games to go).
Jim Phish - got the car last night and it looks good - may do something special with it for the SPF...Smile,Wink, & Grin
Well onward and upward...Smile,Wink, & Grin
See ya inna bit
Good afternoon all,
Although it is not a good day.  Last night as I was taking my shower, my toe that was stepped on a few weeks ago just started aching big time.  I had to take 4 Tylenol just to get to sleep and I woke up at 3 AM in pain again.  I am going to the doctor at 1:30 PM today.  I think they will take off the toe nail, which will take me out of action for a while and at a time I can least afford it.  What is so odd is that it was fine all day yesterday.  I did my lunch walkabout, got the trash ready, picked up sticks in the yard, did weights and played soccer at the YMCA with my Brazilian soccer student (who by the way is getting much better)  and watched some TV with no problem.  I will keep you posted as events unfold or I may even have the "saucy wench" let you know what is going on.  I hope everyone has a good day.  No Beacon tonight.
Keep on training,
Mike C. from Indiana
Good Mornin, ya'll, from frigid windy Taxachusetts,
Been around 20 at night for the past few and didn't even hit 30 yesterday.  Puppy is confused with the weather, had to put his coat on to stop the shaking so he could concentrate on business.  Drove wife to the airport yesterday morning, likes my driving instead of some livery service (I guess) that the company would pay for.  Or a last minute opportunity for her to go over her "honey do" list.  She flew into John Wayne, business in Santa Ana.  DougDG, RaySP, and DonB.....lay low or she'll have you taking her around shopping, and it won't be train shopping.  Said traffic is so bad you almost can't go anywhere without turning a 10 mile drive into a road trip with meals and a stayover.
Spoke to a fellow church member after services over the weekend.  His house is a war zone.  Contemplating evicting his 18 year old daughter from the home (again) and taking out a restraining order against her (again).  Drugs and alcohol.  What can I say to him?  She needs help but won't take it.
RT......I don't mind your Tardis piloting skills, even when you are on meds and driving upside down..  I bring a Disney Princess sippy cup, no spills, and wear my shoulder harness.
JimT......what are the plans for your next layout?
DougM.....no trampoline this Summer?  How will you ever survive?  Whose idea was it for you to put in a swimming pool?  I like the idea as long as you get a water heater for us.
Chief.....some Nawtheners arent'so bad?  Must try harder. Big Smile  Was thinking about your pond and the liming.  I am pretty disappointed in my neighbors.  They take their kids down to the pond behind my house or let them go by themselves (older kids) for ice skating.  Leave everything.  This winter it was trash, chairs, duffel bags, two winter coats, hockey net, shovels, most of which was left on the ice and subsequently is now at the bottom of the pond or is floating around.  Someone's half submerged rowboat is beached out there, probably broken up by the ice.  And these are neighbors!  Phone calls to them and reminder notes in their mailboxes (before the ice melted) gets lip service......and the stuff is directly behind their houses but in full view of mine! SoapBox
Later, gang.
 Sons took and used all my steel leaders for fishing I use for steel cables for the trains ... Grumpy  hunted for them for hours and after cussing for awhile they told me . Have to make some more of the old fashioned guard rails ... the wooden posts with the cables ...  anyone else old enough to remember them ? Never see them on layouts around here but that's what they were back then . These little things take too darn much time and the grandkids won't help ... LOL .
We did a section of roadway like that but we used the lightweight picture hanger wire and wood dowels. Looks great but unfortunately some of our less than graceful club members have had an adverse impact on a few of the posts.
A late Good Morning
Sunny and 50 today but windy.
A sucessful trip to the skin doc this morning, had a something removed from my cheek. It will be tested but she said it looked safe to her. Just had a scrambled egg mixed with mushroom,cheese,green pepper, and onion. White toast. well that was my morning. I probably could find something rusty if it would be helpful in taking care of the Chief. Always happy to help. Enjoy your day...S.J.
Well, I might take a shower and shave.  Been drinking coffee and watching a movie.  Seems nice to rest for a short while.
Doug M, new parts for your dishwasher.  Is that a new set of hands?  WE do not have the modern dishwasher.  When we remodled kitchen, wife refused one.  I would think you have several dishwashers [kids].  Our kids use to have to wash dishes.
Chat later.
You are right. I am sure we are boring a lot of people, but I am going to do it again, only a shorter post.
You're not boring me.  I like this exchange because it helps understand both sides of the fence.  Thank you.
Ole Timer all I've been seeing  on ebay lately is over priced as a whole. I wonder how we will do the week of York lol normally the prices on bay of E drop around late Aug to mid Oct as getting johnny and Suzie back to school and the first school bills lol. sometimes late June - mid July they drop a little as vacation but think a lot have cut back on going on vacation out of town anyway.
Well put the last of the stuff that I'm not keeping up on choochoo. we'll see if any interest if not may put it all in a bunch and list it on bay of E and see how it does.
Morning all. Grey, windy and colder today. Waiting on the carpet guys and a mirror glazier. Got my new parts for the dishwasher too. Should be busy day today - hope this works out before it starts raining.  Nice 'clarifying' chat with the Ohio college my daughter plans to go to in the fall. Just wanted to get a sense of what I'll owe them - the financial aid package was 'mistaken' so they'll repost it. Good thing it's a small school. Great chat with some of theboys last evening. I got some old rebar out back if you need it, Buckeye, I think I forgot why though.
Not sure I have any old rusty barn nails but I do have some RR spikes from a trestle bridge that used to run over my Grandparents farm, would that work?
Tried to sleep late but Lucy said no.  They've been out and I watered the plants and seeds.  Wife put one of her plants in the greenhouse and broke some of the leaves on one of my big squash plants. Angry  Coffee and breakfast time.
