Mornin' All.

Sinuses Grumpy Used hot compresses late last nite and early this morning, also did the steam & tent thing using some really hot water with vicks in it. Seems to have helped a bit, we shall see. Sad

Doug, warm salt water sinus flushes always work for me when I get one of those hellasious sinus headaches.

Roger.....

For Pete's sake, the man has an whole ocean of warm salt water just a few miles west of his house.   All he needs to do is jump in and swim with the sharks for a few hours.

Just last week, as a PQ, I believe that Laz had a severe case of grits dust poisoning.  It was either grits dust poisoning or middle school crud enhanced by cheap beer.

LOL!!!  Middle school crud and GREEN BEER on the Irish holiday.  Boy that was a tough one.

ole timer that $50.00 if they don't recover the funds. but glad to hear that.

They did'nt say if the funds were recovered ... they gave me all my money back with no deductible before he was arrested . Seems he bought some cruise tickets and came in smiling to pick them up ... he got a long vacation ... a cruise in a patty wagon instead . It was an interpol sting with F.B.I  assistance . Banks wordwide frown on that and go nutsy jailing them . Like the lady who called said ... he was'nt smiling when he left in cuffs ... LOL .

Doug ... had severe problems also ... was advised and went to walmart and got a hot steam humidifier ... works great ! I can move it from room to room and run it on low all night and no sinus congestion and headaches anymore . Not only that I mentioned it to my doctor and she said oxygen encapsulated with humidity is easier for the lungs to process .

And on the debit card thing ... if any remember ... months ago some scum bag in Norway stole my debit card number and emptied my bank account . The bank got it all back in 3 days . They notified me the guy was arrested and will be doing big time in a european prison . No deductable of $50.00 to pay either .

Patrick there is no Delicious hot breakfast food called Grits the only thing witht he name of grits is either the grage of sand paper or that stuff we mix up to fix holes in plaster and such. We also use that same stuff unmixed to sprinkle on grass to kill fire ants as they eat it and it swells in them and kills them so I know you wouldn't want to eat anything like that. Whistling

Kyle Bush wins another one! How he has matured. The big disappointment, again, was Dale Jr. Had a decent car but finished a lap down. It appears to me his heart in not in racing this year.

Now it's time for steak on the outside grill, and then some train running.

Morning all, thought we dodged the rain but it was just late arriving.  Had some good showers this morning and wind.  I had a rough night with kidney stone working it's way out. Up at 3:00AM with pains.  Took pain killer and sat up for about an hour. Drank lots of water.  I think it all went through cause pain went away this morning  I have had a lot of these over the years but fortunatelly most of them are small enough to pass.  Probably been getting too much salt in diet.

Don, TCA Western Division starts a 10:00AM.  They are just about wrapping it up by 1:00PM. If you can't get there by Noon, I would'nt waste your time.

Off to church soon.  Wife baking cookies for bake sale.  House smells good.  Watched all the talking head Sunday shows this AM.  All say the same thing about bail outs and bonuses but no one knows anything for sure to solve our problems.  It will take a lot of time whatever the government does.  Just pray they don't make it worse.

Don & Patrick, Check out what happened to this merchant: http://www.bobshobbyshop.com/ .

I checked out www.bobshobbyshop.com

Can you imagine anyone having that much bad luck?

I feel for him, and am glad it wasn't me. I do believe he is the extreme exception. And I don't think it is because he used First Data. The same thing could have happened with any credit card processor.

Now it is NASCAR time. No posts until after the race ( unless the middle of the race becomes boring as it often does).

 Good morning Chief:

I have to agree with Don. Debit cards are not the way to go. You are fully exposed if your card is lost or stolen. The perpetrator (do you like that word fife) can take it all and you are out. Not true with a credit card.

I have an outdated Northern Tools catalog. They haven't sent me one for a while, probably because I haven't purchased from them in years. I forgot they have 1:50 CAT equipment. Need to request a new catalog. Thanks.

Patrick

Patrick sorry I'm covered with my debit cards I can challange any charge I can get it reversed and I'm only responsible for first $50.00 If I lose and they charge before I call.

I was having a problem with a refund on a putor went round and round giving them a chance they kept saying they did refund would redo ect ect I said sorry after 2 weeks I'm going to contack my bank and see what they can do gee it showed up on my acount about 30 minutes later. While I was talking to my bank on the phone she went in one more time be for I hung up and she said it just came thru. as my debit cards have visa logo and visa backs them just like a credit card.

Hello RT:

I hope you are right. However, I had a recent conversation with the bank and got the opposite impression, the one I stated before.

I do know on a credit card you do not have to go through all that effort on your putor. You simply call the credit card company and dispute the sale. They take it from there.

I will call my bank to morrow about it. Stay tuned.

 Hello Don:

You are right. I am sure we are boring a lot of people, but I am going to do it again, only a shorter post.

We did craft shows for 17 years taking credit cards and checks (and occasionally cash) Shock exactly the way you use to. I usually obtained authorizations from the Motel room after the show.

Had more trouble with checks bouncing than charges. However, here in Virginia, the County Commonwealth Attorney will go after the writer of a bad check if I can't resolve it with the buyer.

You make an excellent point about more declines (and bounced checks) in a down turned economy. And you are right about a high dollar item. I also would prefer a check with a DL # at a show.

Anything further we probably should use email. I did enjoy the discussion though.

It is a sunny, clear skies day. Going up to 65 today with lots of sunshine.

Today is a relaxing day. Big Nascar race today from Bristol. I may watch it in the train room. Good place to relax.  Not much else new here.

Dining car was here and then departed for " Points West ". Breakfast was the usual....... Cheerios.

Patrick,  Your right a discussion.  Would really enjoy setting down and comparing stories and experiences.

We did exactly the same as you suggested.  When at a show would run the card on the old knuckle buster, get a phone #, signature, and zip code.  (Got .5% discount for correct zip code, part of address verification.)  Then the next day would "key" in the transaction in our machine.  Did that process for 6 or 7 years at the shows.  And, I agree with you, risk is not much different than a check.  And I can only recall 1 or 2 times we were not able to resolved the transaction.  There were many times couldn't get auth. initially, but would call customer and usually resolved.

Then with the economy, I was thinking and concerned since we are running "bare" at the show, the potential for declines could dramtically increase.  So decided to "try" a show and see what happened.  For a two day show we lost 3 sales, and the dollar amt was less than $20 total.  Typically we would get between 25 and 35 cc xactions.  So that was no loss.  In the other instances cash appeared.  On our website we accept Visa/MC, but there too we do NOT do automatic processing.  I'm concerned for customer security.  We have 12 levels of encryption, and then have a system on subsequent orders the cusomer only has to veryify last four and expiration date.  That process has been good, no problems.

Our service is through Costco, and I just went through Friday reviewing the summary statements and rates for various card types.  Really difficult to unravel,  10-12 different CC NCRD  type codes.

I (I can understand a dealers concern, potential 3.5% transaction fee for a $1000 to $1500 sale, If I had to take an "unathorized CC, I would just as soon take the Check.   Here, DL #, is acceptable, and if the customer provides it and the check is declined for NSF or anything, the state Atty Gen., had determined that since the DL was provided it is an "intintional" effort and the customer "could" be charged with fraud.

I'm sure this is boring a lot of people, this isnt the place.  SORRY EVERYONE.

 Evening all,

Patrick,  As a merchant, credit cards and debit cards are a BIG pain in the neck.  I can understand why their is so much reluctance with the dealers, not want to take them.  Here's why;

- First dependent upon the card holders card the transaction fees are anywhere between 2 to 5% that the merchant must bear.  In addition, at a show using a wireless card scanner can cost as much as $300 t0 $800 dollars to have.  If the merchant calls for a verbal authorization, there are additional fees that can be as much as $8 to $15.

-Now keep in mind the vendor is NOT allowed to ask for a drivers license #, telephone number, or address, and is still expected to verify validate card holders identity.  AND, the authorization center is NOT obligated to guarantee the transaction, that is the merchant's responsibility.

- IF the cardholder were to loose the card later in the day, and notifies the bank issuing the card, the transaction is nullified.  AND then the merchant faces a "Chargeback", which typically is a $25 processing fee in addition to reversal of the transaction amount.

- IF the card is a Debit/ATM card then the transaction fees are even higher, another 2-3%

- American Express and Discover are even worse.

We have discontinued taking ANY card at our shows for the above reasons.  We have lost less than 1/2% of sales as a result.  Usually people just pull out the cash, whereas before "Since you take the card, I'm going to save my cash for the other guy".   It is NOT to far off that cc will be the primary form of transactions, and then watch the rates go up.  Imagine the banks are getting approx 3% of all transactions made in the US in ONE day, and then the benefits received by interest rates!  CC will only hasten the economic downfall of this country.  SORRY FOR THE RANT !

All in all a good day, Rain, Nascar and SPF tomorrow.Later ALL

Hello Don:

Looks like we found a topic for debate. Before I try to answer your points, let me say to you and Doug M that I am a merchant also with an internet business. 99% of my sells are credit card.

First - There is no need to have the scanner at a show or to obtain authorization if you are willing to take checks. As I see it, an unauthorized credit card sale is the same as taking an unauthorized check. You can use the old paper swipe machine to record the credit card sale.

The two vendors that accepted credit cards at yesterdays show did ask me for a phone number and a zip code. I can't say if that was legal or not, because all our sales, CC and checks provide the name, address phone number.

If a card holder looses their card resulting in a canceling of my sale (a rare event I think), I have proof of purchase and can have the charge reinstated, even if the card holder's card is canceled and a new card is issued.

Our card processer "First Data" doesn't charge extra for Debit cards.

We do not take American Express. We do take Discover, as well as VISA and MasterCard, all processed by "First Data". No extra fee is charged for Discover. We pay a 1.75% fee on all three.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have to ask how you know you only loose less than 1/2% in sales?

You have sales of less than $100, but what if you were selling train sets or engines from $400 - $1500. Would you expect people to carry that amount in cash?

In our current economy, I would think a merchant would want to do what ever is need to increase sales, including accepting credit cards. At yesterday's train show I would have spent twice as much if more merchants had accepted credit cards.

I don't consider any of this to be a Rant. Just a good discusion.

On an entirely different note, I am glad to see some one else considers a rainy day to be a good day!
