Good morning from a grey, dark and cold Chicago. Gotta run up to the docs for a regular checkup. John, that traction site at OGR is sort-a active, as is the one at MTJ. There's an O scale traction modellers group on Yahoo! too. This is a good aggregate site I bookmark too: http://eastpenn.org/

Weekend flew by: I spent all day yesterday building and painting a huge castle for a Halloween church event out of five refrigerator boxes.

Wow, is it cold out. Doc appt went fine. I am apparently in good health. They had to stick me a bunch of times to draw blood though - ouch.

Mike C. I agree re Housewives - I'm trying to watch it because my wife wants my company: can't imagine why.. It is pretty stupid but last night was amusing.

Chief, take me too!

Forgot to chime in: old as well as new 027 switches on my layout are non-derailing.

Morning all. Bright and sunny out but a bit cool at 50 degrees. The locals in this area say "it's cold", but this is t-shirt weather for me, thanks to living in Illinois all my life until last January. Just got confirmation on a bunch of stuff I have ordered. My Lionel 6-11105 New York Central L2 Mohawk shipped today and my Merchant's Dispatch hotbox reefer and NYC Dockside Switcher (Lionel 6-28650) will ship this week along with the Christmas music boxcar (6-26858). The NYC Hudson (MTH 30-1429-1) is due in soon. Due to arrive today are an MTH battery charger (MTH 50-1019) and Lionel Pennsylvania freight expansion pack (6-30037). This whole week is gonna be Santa Claus/UPS arrival week Big Smile [:D]

I have an order I want to place with The Train Barn, but it looks like they are taking a vacation after York. Oh well. Smile [:)]

Observations on the road to York---

ILLINOIS--is there ever a time when one get's close to Chicago when there is not road construction? Nothing like 3 lanes of traffic going through zig-zags at 65mph with only a few inches of room between me and the 18 wheeler, WHEW!

INDIANA--glad we were headed west on Saturday after noticing the miles long back up trying to exit at South Bend, WOW!

OHIO--the very nicest rest areas/restaurants/gas stations--easy on & off. Thank You Buckeye for holding off on the snow last week, I can imagine that turnpike being a snow magnet.

PA--it was like a Grant Wood painting Friday afternoon from York to Pittsburg, absolutely gorgeous. We typically vacation in Colorado or Wyoming and are used to the Rockies, fun to see a different kind of mountain range. The roads in PA are "interesting", be sure and plan on extra travel time but not that bad. We REALLY enjoyed our time in Gettysburg before the meet exploring the battlefields, fascinating. Strassburg was also extremely enjoyable, glad we were able to take the time and enjoy that area.

IOWA--nice to get back to 4 lane roads where they don't charge you to drive on 'em! Plus I could legally drive faster :)

Fun to meet the PA guys on Friday afternoon, a good bunch to be sure!!!!!!!

Glad to hear those of you who attended York had a great time. Sounds like quite an event!

Cold weather has arrived in Dixie! Got into the low 40s last night with a chance to get to 32 here tonight. At least the sun is shining - overall a very nice, if chilly, day!

Chief, they just had the ground-breaking for the new Bass Pro Shop here in Prattville. Any chance you'll be involved with its opening?

This book was getting some publicity here in Chicago this morning. Think our layouts / basements qualify? See http://www.amazon.com/ManSpace-Primal-Guide-Marking-Territory/dp/1561588202/sr=8-1/qid=1161624413/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-3686842-8570520?ie=UTF8

Back from Sears and the Craftsman Club sale.  Changed thermostat in Chevy pickup.  Had done that in the spring [the old one was getting a little sticky on the high side].  This one was making the engine run cool and and making the engine spark knock when it was not running hard [plus the sorry gasoline we get now].  Running cool will make them take more of that sorry gas too.   Lets see how this one does.  Later.

I am on the tired side of things today, got off call early this am, but with little sleep and had a morning case.Sleepy [|)]  I am hoping to finish benchwork this week and also to get the track down.  I was able to get a sky backdrop done and I picked up some lights for the layout.

The movie our church made "Facing the Giants" is opening in Pennsylvania this week, I believe Lancaster is one of the places.  CBS evening news was at our church Sunday filming for an airing on probably the 29th.  We have been on a number of shows and broadcasts these past few weeks, but I have either been away, on the lights, or up in the production/media room, so have not had to deal with the publicity side of things, which is fine.  If you get a chance, it is a good movie, though I am being a bit biased.

Doug is correct. Say, I was just talking to a friend of mine who saw a Lionel set in a local Super-Target - He couldn't describe it to me more than it had a tractor trailer model in it (that interested him) and was around $240. Looks like Jerry C is working some of his brand magic as explained in his OGR interview. I can't tell you how many threads I've read about the future of the hobby that coalesce into -" if only the yout' of America could find quality train sets in the local Wal-K-MarT-arget"

That does look like a nice set! Maybe overpriced, but I'm glad to see Lionel put together a nice O guage starter set in a major department store (again). The passenger shelter, crane car, and tractor trailer are nice touches as is the boxcar with the catalog art. Has a "classic" starter set look to it. Anyone know if the engine has railsounds? I would guess not.

Chief, when you come to Prattville, you can have chicken and mashed potatoes or we could do some local barbecue. Your choice, and I'm buying!

It made it up to 52F here this afternoon, 40 when I left the house at 6:10, low 30's tonight.  I just finished cutting the front yard and mulching the leaves.  Never fails that something goes awry when your almost finished, I guess I picked up a stick and threw the mower belt.  I finally finished the front lawn 45 min. later.  Nothing is ever easy to get at.

On the train front, almost done with the wiring of the contract layout, maybe 2 more work days.  I've been doing a good deal of work here at home putting together a couple of Berkshire Valley water columns, kit bashing a station so that it resembles the old SAL station here in Athens, putting spanish tile on the roof of a passenger platform and more.  The owner is the type that frequently changes his mind, I don't know if he realizes, or just doesn't care, what change orders cost him.  So far he hasn't balked at what I ask for every week, especially with the minutes at home adding up to hours ($Big Smile [:D])  The only problem is I haven't done anything on my layout since I started this project.Sad [:(]

Watching the Trains and Locomotives on RFD, good one on the NKP RR.  It is right at the transition of steam/diesle.  Lots of Berk action.  Playing Mr. Mom till my better half comes home from work.   I think the ladies work harder at home with the kids than we do at our jobs.  At least thats how it goes in our home.
This weekend, we had a neighborhood block party.  Met a retired cop from Chicago who it turns out has lots of old Lionels in boxes as his wife has taken over the planned layout room.  I told him he could come run his trains over at our house once the layout is done.

Oh how sad, watching all the NKP steam engines lined up waiting the torch.Sad [:(]

Dennis: I'm watching that same show!!!! I didn't know there were any channels that played train videos 'till my Father-in-law told me about it yesterday. Pretty neat to see the NYC F3 diesels going by along with the Berkshire. Also cool the way they handed messages to the engineer and train crew.

Back in the 1950s, my Dad worked worked at a NYC reclamation plant where I would go there when I was little to help him pick up his check when he was on vacation & saw tracks full of old steam engines waiting for the torch. I told him to bring one home !! He said how guys were bringing home bells & headlights & some would bring home brass & of course some got caught & got fired. I can still remember them lined up out there !!

Thanks, John

And just think how many newcomers will be turned off to this great hobby with the CW-80 transformer that won't work right. You would think by know that Lionel would learn something.

BTW - It is SNOWing in NE Ohio. Some areas have over 6" and it is still coming down.

Tom- Not accumlation-type snow here yet, only just sleet stuff. It actually was coming down while I was cutting out the top of the layout. Im expecting it to snow pretty soon.

wednesday we have a half day, and the rest of the week is off for me! More time to work on the layout!!!

Ha - good day for Jimbo - stopped on the way home to get some super fine sandpaper to finish prepping my gondola before we paint it.  Got home and my "new" Z1000 transformer was here.  The guy was selling 2 - one only used once at Christmas and one used lightly.  I bid on the only used once one, but I think he mixed them up.  I only say that 'cause three of the little rubber feet were missing and I doubt that would happen with a single use.  Oh well, hooked it up and it worked great plus can blow the whistle on the Halloween Docksider etc.  It was about $30 to $40 cheaper than a new one and it has the registration cards and all the packaging stuff.  Maybe if I call MTH, they will send me some replacement feet?

Need to get my Halloween General, Sounds Car, etc from last year out now.  I noticed that the loco didn't slow down at the far end of the track, like it did with the 50 Watt K-Line starter set transformer, but I'm still going to add another lockon.  I have enough track for a simple loop of O-27 and I'm thinking of doing that as a raised level track in the middle of the layout - would have to get some trestles this weekend....  Oh - I also had my new Woodworkers Supply catalog and also my November CTT issue (replacement came).  Now, if I get the December issue in the next week or so I'll be caught up.

What would you guys do - I used to subscribe to a National Political/News Magazine for many years, but in the past election cycle, they stopped showing up.  I didn't notice at first.  Then, about a week after the election, 4 or 5 issues show up all at once.  It's a bi-weekly magazine.  After that, they would show up in 2's and 3's, always about a month or so late.  I let that subscription expire because I figured the company was screwing up or going under or something.  My other magazines, Wood Magazine and Popular Woodworking, always show up.  Now, CTT has started not showing up.  I got a call from the National Political/News Magazine asking what was wrong and I told them I was sick of getting the news 6 to 8 weeks late.  They claim they ALWAYS sent them out on time and not bunched up etc.

So -- My Spider Senses are Tingling.  I think there's a sticky fingered toy train fan at the local Post Office, who also represents a different political "side" than my usual preference and doesn't have the sense to let other people do their own thing.  Who should I call?  The local PO or ???  Honestly, if there is shenanigans, I want someone to feel the heat!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Looking forward to chatting again now that the fishing season is drawing to a close.  One more trip next week and it will be model railroading again during the cooler months.  This summer was pretty good.  Leaky wadding boots, 22 inch brown trout in Southern MO, and a 25 inch walleye in Canada were the highlights.  I did complete a few more structures for my layout during the 100 degree period we had here this summer.  I can't believe how fast the fall is going.  In a month it will be Thanksgiving and the local train show.  Hope all is well with the gang here.

Evening all.  Got wife's new leather sofa and got it in the house.  Had to get new neighbor next door and his cousin to get the heavy big thing in.  He was willing as I had mowed his grass twice for free.  We will get along fine.  Too tired to go get food so wife made baked ham and cheese sandwiches with lots of mustard and baked potato.  Had more of that chocolate praline cake. Watched the Courtship of Eddie's Father on TMC.  Had not seen that in years.  Wife is asleep on her new sofa.  So far, Burg the lab has not tried to get on it. Shock [:O]  It may be too high backed for him to lay there and put his head on the back cushions and look out the double windows [like he did on the old one which bothered the wife].  What are couches for?  For the dog to lay on. Big Smile [:D]  Dispatching a few squirrels in the back pecan tree this afternoon.  Not my squirrrels but from the neighbors'.  Maybe why I came home this afternoon to see a hawk sitting on the gate to the fence.  Drove within ten feet of him with the truck.  He just sat there.  Got out and slowly walked around and watched him.  He made a few hawk screeches and finally flew to a tree 20 feet away.  Sat there for a few and then flew off.  Had seen him here before but he did not sit that close.  Almost acted tame.  Back to CSI Miami.  Later.
