I'm impressed, Dr. John, planning for the holidays already ...

Good morning from a sunny Chicago where it should be a beautiful day with me indoors of course. Looks like rain over the weekend for the big Bears-Packers game, so I think I'll call home to make sure one of the older kids cuts the grass. Still not used to continuing to follow the Pale Hose into late September - boy, was there some mutual shellacking in their recent series with the Red Sox. Speaking of football, I got tickets to the Notre Dame / Purdue game later this month -  ! - only a pair - but I think I'll bring the whole family and let the oldest kids go in to see the game.

What is it with MTH and things themed for the city of Pittsburgh?

Anyone have one of Lionel's #520 boxcabs?  It sure looks like a neat little electric - I wonder how difficult it would be to find one.

Doug,

Those 520s are great little locomotives. As with all things Lionel, they are more than plentiful on Ebay. If you buy from a person with very high positive feedback (99.8 or higher), you should be ok. Just check any negative feedback to see what the problem was before bidding. Sometimes people get an undeserved negative feedback.

Morning all.  Off to the store.  Over slept so rushing.   Roy, you have to watch those Yanks.  Thye pretend to be friendly but will try to attack you with some disease or something. Wink [;)]  Jim A, you've got the fever.  You and I need to start supporting each other on STOP BUYING.  Dennis is doing better than we are.  Sounds like Lucas is doing better.  Still on prayer list.  Have great breakfast at this Hiliday Inn Express.  Sauage and scrambled eggs.  No grits. Sad [:(]  Got to go.  God bless.

Chief,

You had that poison ivy on your hand before you came here! Thanks again for helping me with that 2056. I really did learn a lot.

I've got to just stop buying. Cold turkey.

Just got back from my walk. It's a little warm out there. First walk in about 2 weeks. I've been too itchy to move much with all that ivy and medication rash. Now the Chief has it!

Got an e-mail from CTT today. Free shipping and save a buck on the post war train special due out next month. I bit.

Good afternoon,

Finally got that cabinet door finished and reinstalled for the daughter-inlaw.  The grandson owes me one.  Spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon doing lawn and garden work, early fall cleanup.

Don, Glad to hear that things are coming together for you.  Looks like you will be building layout very soon.  Probably won't hear much from you for a while. Big Smile [:D]

Dr. John, Good luck on the negotiations.  I'm betting on the floor layout. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Jim, I vote for Dougs suggestion, not a big PB&J fan.

Doug Murphy, Penn State plays Notre Dame tomorrow.  Which team is yours in the Notre Dame / Purdue matchup?

Chief, They should have potatoes with breakfast there, aren't you in Idaho?

Just one more thing:

Only 990 more page to go till 2000.  Big Smile [:D]

Hope to get to the HS football game tonight, weather is supposed to be good.

PB&J is cheaper though - more money left over for trains. How 'bout plain American cheese san'wiches or generic mac'n cheese.  And some fruit.

Guess I'll root for the Domers as I went there - though I'm not a rabid alum...

I received a mailer from the TCA Dixie Div. yesterday.  They are taking orders for a 20th Anniv. commemorative boxcar.  The cars are Southern Railway, PS-1, they'll be Lionel Std. O, available in two numbers.  Pre 12/31/06 pricing is $140 for 2; $75 for one.  $150 and $80 respectively after 12/31.

If anyone is interested e-mail me and I'll scan in the form and e-mail it back.

The local newspaper article on my layout came out yesterday.  They did a nice job, generic but it gets the hobby across to the layman.  The only gripe is on page one my name is spelled wrong while with the continuation on pg 9 its correct.  I called to thank them today and was given the phone number of someone interested in seeing the layout, hopefully another (potential) hobbiest.

Its gone now.  Does not bother me.  Usually don't get it.  Got a spider [I think] bite from the room at the Highlander.  Was sitting in the comfortable chair in the room watching TV and suddenly got to itching at my waist line.  Think I had one down the shirt.  Left a itchy sore spot.  Hope it wasn't a Brown Reclouce or Black Widow. Shock [:O]

Slow in the store for grand opening [have seen slower].  Tomorrow should be a biggie.  I wonder about some of these managers.  No hanging sale tags [so customers can see sale prices].  Went to Dept Manager and asked.  They were pritned wrong so we don't have them.  DAAAH, the store prints their own in their shop.  So, none of the items in Marine have sale tags.  How do you sale?  The Cabela brothers are suppose to be her during the opening.  Hope they come by and see me.  You know what I will say. Evil [}:)]

Trying to find the train shop with O gauge [Toy].  Only one in town and he is suppose to be open every afternoon until 8 PM.  Will not answer my calls.  Lots of train shops but all HO only or HO, O scale 2 rail, and G.  Got that info from a guy who has a big train shop out in the middle of no where.  Monster place with lots of stock.  He says folks drive from all over the country to his shop.  Really easy to get to if you know how.  No traffic and  about 2 miles off of the Interstate.

Back to the store.

Will you get nailed? debuts on internet

Teenagers, at an age where, of course, they already know everything in life, are sometimes difficult to reach with the Operation Lifesaver railroad safety message.  Still, teens driving vehicles are most vulnerable to vehicle crashes -- sometimes with a train.

Now, a teen website, www.willyougetnailed.com attempts to familiarize young drivers with the serious consequences if their vehicle (4,000 pounds) tries to beat a train (12 million pounds) at the crossing.  Young adults are also killed and seriously injured walking or recreational vehicle riding among other activities while trespassing on private railroad property.  The new website includes a quiz and information about the inherent dangers at crossings and along railroad right of way.

Maine Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit 501(c)3 public education and information program dedicated to reducing collisions, injuries, and fatalities at railroad crossings along Maine's nearly 1,200 miles of active rail lines. Maine Operation Lifesaver also works to make the public aware of the dangers of trespassing on private railroad property.

Members of the state committee include mostly current and retired officials representing Maine's railroads, private industry, Maine Department of Transportation, and the Federal Railroad Administration. These volunteers meet monthly to coordinate and carry out related presentations and projects statewide. Activities are funded primarily by the state's rail carriers.

Nationwide, Operation Lifesaver programs exist in 49 states and have contributed significantly to the more than 50 percent reduction in crashes and fatalities at railroad crossings. In Maine, statistics reveal a sharp decrease in such crashes from 23 collisions killing three and injuring nine others in 1990  to six incidents in 2004 resulting in one injury and one fatality. However, in Maine and elsewhere, trespassing incidents are on the rise and are a new focus of Operation Lifesaver efforts.

Around the country, there were more than 3,000 crashes in 2004, killing 369 and injuring 1,038 others. 480 people were killed last year in related trespassing incidents caused by such things as walking and motoring along tracks and railroad bridges, throwing objects at trains and placing objects on the tracks, and hitching joyrides on trains.

Doug - they got that bad guy?!?!  Excellent.  Agree - too bad he didn't resist himself into the ground.

Roy, we had a Taurus SE as our seond car and it was an excellent vehicle for us, good luck!  Got an hour of leave (admin) from work for hitting goals last week, so used it tonight.  We all went to dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse.  Very good!  I had the filet on a portobello mushroom with melted bleu cheese on top, a baked tater, salad and we all shared some fried onion appetizer (tonion?).  I couldn't even finish my tater, but that steak was great!  Then, as per my secret plan, we went down the street to the Kirkwood Hobby Station, but there was no parking left and they were going to close in about 20 minutes Angry [:(!]  My wife said, well, where to?  So I said Schaeffer's Hobby store.  I'm sure glad we went there instead - got a good deal on Lionel O27 track (I think).  All new and it was like $1.39 for curves and straights, and I bought a couple remote switches for about $20 each, as well as a 90 degree crossover and some lockdowns.  This is the track I remember as a kid, so it was fun grabbing a bunch!  Also got two of the long strips, I think they're a little under a yard.  Need to go back and buy some more switches if the layout I have in mind will really work out, but didn't want to go too far over budget!  Now I need to get a piece of foam board to make a false top for my table and start messing around with this stuff -- the fun part!

Tomorrow, I'm working in the morning and then stopping at Lowes to buy some 12-3 + Ground wire for three 3-way switches and a 4-way switch for the basement, and maybe some light fixtures - might hold off on them until next week though.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

8:30 here.  Going to room as my body says its 10:30.  Still no O gauge train store. Sad [:(]

It's the Roger's Corners Train Festival this Weekend!

Yes indeed this is a big weekend at Roger's Corners with Greg and Chuck heading here for a visit to see the trains.   Greg will be here on Saturday and Chuck will be here on Sunday.   I have my Ohio Central hat ready for the photos and all the trains were running real good tonight when I put all four of them at once through their paces.

Sorry to hear that Roy became sick after he had a chance to breath the fresh air off of Lake Erie when he visited Tom.  I guess that much moisture can kill those Texans.

Chief, make sure you tell those Cabela fellows how much I enjoy doing business with them. NOT

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cool 55 degrees and sunny. Going up to 80 again and sunshine. I hope this weather holds. Nice day tomorrow for the Garden Railroad tour would be great.

Today, we are finishing up a few projects and taking it easy. Have an errand to run later. Gas is down to $2.12 a gallon here, but still 30 cents more in Caldwell. They are not getting much business, as can be expected.

Need to  get camera ready for tomorrow. Taking a lot of pictures.

Well, off to the Dining Car. Breakfast on the way.

Y'all have a great day.

Good morning from a greying and cooling northeastern Illinois. Looks like rain - good train-running weather. Chuck, how 'bout them White Sox? They somehow won with a 2 run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Not too many guys at my small group mtg over at the church so I took them to breakfast. Then came home to find the youngest decided to paint and color while watching TV - too bad he put the paper right on the carpet - where is everyone supposedly keeping an eye on him? Also managed to paint his face, arms and clothes. Well, you know what I'll be working on for a while.

Good morning all.

The excitement is building as the wife and I finish off our vacation plans for next week. My employer grants us a three week sabbatical every five years, on top of the normal vacation time.

Mine started yesterday Smile [:)]Yeah!! [yeah].

I am also fortunate that the wife enjoys tourist railroads and chasing after trains almost as much as I do. So we decided on a two week train themed drive around the east / northeast would be a nice break. We are starting out heading for Roanoke to visit the Virginia Transportation Museum and search out anything else N & W / NS related. From there we head to Cass and Elkins, WV to ride the trains there. Departing Elkins we are heading north to Altoona for a visit to Horseshoe Curve. Our trek to Altoona will take us on a couple of detours in WV where my wife wants to stop as well as close enough to Sand Patch for a quick stop and some pictures. After a couple of days in Altoona we are heading to SteamTown in Scranton, PA as well as a stop in the Easton area where I have some family. From there it is down to Philadelphia and Vally Forge to see some history and then on to Spencer, NC to visit Spencer Shops. We will wrap it up with a leisurely drive back to GA.

It looks like everyone else has been pretty busy. Chief, have a safe trip home. Roger, do you have an on line link to the article on your layout – I would like to read it?

Luther, That sounds like a great vacation.  To bad my wife is not a train lover.

Laz,  It looks like you were right.  I should stay home from our HS football games.  What a letdown.  Our team took the initial kickoff and marched right down the field to score.  I guess the missed PAT was an omen as that was the last scoring we did.  Lost 32-6. Sad [:(]

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
