Good evening,

I don't know if it has hit the National news yet but we had a NS derailment in back of the Hershey Chocolate Plant; in Hershey, PA; of course. 8 cars derailed including a tanker filled with Chlorine and two other tank cars with chemicals. They evacuated a large number of people as a precaution but so far no leaks. Supposed to transfer the Chlorine tomorrow morning. Didn' hear what caused the derailment.

Chuck, Those madisons should look good behind the GG1.

That's what I thought, John( jefelectric )...............The Madisons are
Luxury Lines in Tuscan. I got the two car " add on " set. A baggage car and coach.
I plan on saving up for a 4 car set also. 3 coaches and an observation. I got the AO set
just to get a feel for the look.
Chuck

John( csxt30 ) I will take some pictures and post them

Don,
I like your attitude also. I am sure some had something to say after you left, but I think they forget what it is all about...Having fun. It is alright to be able to create an exact scale replica of something, but I am not into creating my own museum. I will stick to running trains and enjoying them all, scale or not.

Chuck, I think I might have the same set you are getting only lettered Broadway Limited. It has a baggage, a combo, 3 coaches and an observation.

Don, Sounds like you are enjoying your trains. Ignore the ney sayers and have fun.

Chief, I just checked out 'Pops' post. Looks like you got him hooked real good.

Enjoy your trains.

Good morning from Gettysburg. Very cool here this AM, in the low 50's. Supposed to be a gorgeous day.

kblester - you had commented that you hoped I wasn't seeing so many tourists or so much blue and grey. Really this weekend is a big one because they postponed the big reenactment from last weeked to this weekend, plus it is Bike Week in G'burg. They are expecting between 12,000 and 15,000 Harley riders to visit over the next few days. The hotel owners are miffed with the reenactment organizers because they postponed the reenactment to this weekend without realizing it was Bike Week. So... many ticket holders for the reenactment couldn't switch their hotel/motel reservations because all the bikers had already booked the rooms. Plus they are not refunding money to reenactment ticketholders who could not make it this weekend. A new Second Battle of Gettyburg rages this week over tourist dollars. My son is friends with one of the organizers of the reenactment. He is working the next three days. 14 hour days. He'll be hauling ice around to the concessions and reenactors camps, bet that didn't happen in 1863 [:D]

Have a great day.

The kids and I went to the Train Store last night to pick up our new streamliners. We had fun running them behind our NYC Flyer steamer. Nice looking cars. Lately I've enjoyed running passenger trains.

I also bought the new Model Railroader and OGR issues. OGR really has a winner this time out. The whole issue is good reading.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Jim,
I really wish I had a local train store, but the nearest is 3+ hours away. I do have a friend who owns one in NJ and gives me a good deal so the shipping doesn't kill me, but I know I would spend a whole lot more if I was there. It just makes the purchases so much easier to have my kids saying we "need" that or I want this, then Mom is more willing to capitulate on my train restriction. Anyway, I look forward to getting the layout done and my trains up and running.
Good Morning from Blueberryhill
It is 52 cool degrees now, sun is out. Going to 80 today
and staying sunny. Looks like a great weather day.
Today we are taking a ride up to Amish country. Having dinner there at a great place.
There are a few good wood shops that I want to check out. Also, a toy store that has a lot
of scale cars and trucks. Nice day planned.
Madison cars are on the way. Should look nice with GG1. As John mentioned.
I need to take some time and work on scenery. Rainy day project.
I love to be outside when the weather is nice.
Time for breakfast. Talk more later.
Y'all have a great day.

Good morning from a sunny and mild Chicago. Last evening, the youngest and I went to the library and then to the 'cruise' night in downtown Crystal Lake - which consists of one street leading to the train depot with a few parking lots. Lot's of wonderful cars were seen; lot's of teenagers were hanging about - including the daughter - hmm, don't like her crowd - think she'll be staying home on Th. nights the rest of the summer; the youngest got a balloon and ice cream, and I had to drag him home. The rest of the family went to church. Then, after putting him to bed, I got to sit out back until dark and make some more trees for the layout. A pleasant evening. Tomorrow, I get to go to the Busch race at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet (hurray!) Not thinking too much of work today [;)] - Chuck, can't wait to see those Madisons.

Dennis,

We have train stores all over the place up here. Like Starbucks or McDonalds. Honestly, over 30 within 50 miles of my house. I try to stay away from them and think pure thoughts. But every once in a while, the devil on my shoulder (my son, John) asks me to go to "the train store". I always cave in and buy something. Move up here and you'll have plenty of train shops to visit. They're everywhere!

Central Ohio does not have any exceptional train stores, unlike Cleveland, Akron, Cincinnati, Toledo, and Indianapolis. Even the small town of Huntington, Indiana has a better store than we do in Central Ohio. My favorite store around here is in Lancaster, Ohio, they always have a great selection of Lionel, MTH and K-Line in the store. Everybody else wants to order this and that for you.

Hi guys,

It's shaping up for a beautiful weekend here in WNY> Temps are supposed to be in the low 80's and bright sunny skys. It looks like will be able to get some work done in the yard and have some fun outside too!

We had a good time earlier in the week with Buckeye and Mrs B out on the lake. We then went out for a nice dinner. I think it would be fun to sit in that Buckeye boat and just float around. Maybe even throw a line over the side and catch a fish or 2.

John, Happy belated birthday! Hope it was a good one.

Have a great day everyone. Enjoy the weekend and stay safe.

Jim, I can complain a bit about not having any train stores, but I don't think I will ever move back north. Too Cold, no sweet tea, no grits, and too many people. We may visit a time or two, but it is great to come back to that southern hospitality.

Good Evening Everyone !!
Oh yes, The only thing is when I was going there, I was either into HO or R/C plane s & helis. Though, I used to gaze for a long time at their wall of Lionel trains way up high !! Lots of old trains were on those shelves & Neat old style Lionel art painting, too !! That was on Huron street in downtown Cleveland. They had the really neat old time metal building car kits too, that I always wanted. Then when I finally got into Lionel In the 90s, they closed up. I think Ctt had a big write up about their store quite a few years back. Yes, It was a great place to visit. I'll bet Keith & Tom went there also.
Well, back to running the train with my little grandson, now !
Hope everyone has a nice weekend !
Thanks,

Nothing much going on here - finally got a chance to get on the computer here at home. I tried getting on the trains.com website at work a few days ago on break and I got a message from the computer guys about bandwith etc, so no can do. :(

Evening everyone. Taking a little break from working on my rail plan. I have the RR Tracks program and putting it to good use. I must tell y'all that I messed up at first as I tried to do it off the cuff. I did not read all the help section on getting started and the PDF file. Don't make this mistake, you can make a whole lot of progress if you use it the way it is designed. I am on track now (pardon the pun), but should have a final layout plan by Sunday.

Yes, the Hobby House was a great store. I went there as a kid with my Dad several
times. He bought my Lionel set from May Co. or Higbee's. I can't remember which.
I did a lot of business with The Trading Post. It was loaded with Post War trains.

Good evening,

Today is Jean's day off so it was a shopping day. I only bought a few things and no train items, she is the family shopper.

Like Jim, we are blessed with a lot of train stores in our area. I have a good one about 2 miles from my house and at least 12 to 15 within a 50 mile radius. Many of these I have never visited. If I did I would have no money left at all. [:D]

John, csxt30, Sounds like we have a lot of the same hobby background. I started with planes, switched to HO, then back to planes, again back to HO, a long break and then to O gauge when I retired. Never tried Helis, but now that they have some neat electrics it would be tempting.

Mitch, Wild horses couldn't drag me to Gettysburg this weekend. Do you live right in town? I'll bet the traffic is wild.

I'm going to take a little break from trains and assemble a new computer. The hard drive in the one I am using now has been showing signs of age and I don't want to be surprised with a sudden failure if I can help it. Have been assembling parts as I find them on sale or with rebates and now am ready to put them together.

All have a nice weekend.

Chuck; forgot you lived near Hobby House !! Trading Post is nice too !
John; yes, Most of the past years I was trying to do both, planes & trains. Now about the helis, I see guys learning to fly them, or at least hover proficiently in 1 to 2 tanks of fuel, with all the goodies they have today. ( gyros ). Took me a whole summer to learn to hover back in the late 70s. Everything works so much better today ! The electrics work very well also & are nice & clean !! Don't have all that fuel on your hands all day. If you get one, hunt down someone nearby for help, & you won't throw any money away !!
Thanks,

Hello All! Jim A- Yes, I use to go to the Hobby House about every other week in Cleveland & once a week when I was going to a Electronics School there[:)] In 1986 I bought a # 151 Semaphore brand new in the box Stock for $32.00 & it was packaged in a blister pack type box that Lionel used in the mid 60s & I still have it. Wally Jeffrey was the owner of the Hobby House & they had a huge stock of Old Lionel in their basement that they would bring something up to the first floor to sell( Engines, sets,& that Semaphore I bought) The Original owner of the Hobby House was Leonard Blum & he sold the Place to Wally in 1974.Incedentally. Leonard's son Harry was one of the guys involved in the corporate takeover of Lionel by General Mills in 1970 & he was a General Manager that worked out of the old Lionel New Jersey Factory in Hillside & helped create the product line for Lionel in 1970 & 71. After that. He left Lionel & went out west to California to become a Video Producer as he felt that it was time to move on & do something else new. The Store itself had a High Ceiling about 15 ft high & it was made of Tin & Like John said the wall on one side of the store had a huge Lionel Motiff Painting from the 50s & was very impressive to see.The basement was where all of the goodies were & only Wally or the store help were allowed to go down there for Trains or Parts so I've no idea what it looked like down there. Wally's wife also helped out in the store & the Lionel Service man's Name was Ted Nyerges. I still see him every now & then at some of the Local Train shows. Wally's son also helped out in the store when he was a teen. Usually on weekends & most of the summer. (Forget his son's name) Wally went out of business in 1994 due to health reasons & also the fact that the Gateway construction( New Cleveland Indians Ballpark behind the store) was keeping customers away as the street in front of the Hobby House was torn up so New Restaurants & Sports Clubs could be built to accomodate Indians & Cavs Fans. I once asked Wally about a month before he closed "Why not move the store out to the suburbs?" & he said that The store was centrally located for his clientale & he did not want to go out too far away as he felt it would be a long drive for some of his customers. Still, I wish he had moved out to one of the "Burbs" so to speak. The Hobby House was definatley one of the best Train & Hobby Shops around & it is too bad they are out of business now. & I'm sure I speak for plenty of Train Guys around here in saying that. Here's another tidbit for you guys. One Christmas about 20 years ago I was at the Hobby House Looking over the Trains & Picking up some parts for a project engine I had at the time.( A 1689E) & in walks my Brother to buy a Christmas Present for me & he was suprised to see me there as he did not want me to see what he bought. So, I went over to the other side of the store so that he could buy what he was going to get me & Wally let me know when he was finished & left the store. That is one of my all time favorite Memories of the Hobby House[;)][:)] I did not expect to see my Brother there nor did he expect to see me there.[:)][8D] Later on in the day my Brother asked what I had bought there & I showed him the part's for my project engine. I guess it was a relief to him that I did not buy what he was going to get for me that Christmas[;)][:)] Such good memories of the place.[:)] Take Care all.

John, csxt30,

One of the shops where I buy trains is also handling the electric helis. He has a lot of experienced customers and I am sure if I decide to give it a try that I can get some help. I am always open to all the help I can get. I do know that the first gas ones were a handful to fly, used to see guys flying them tethered to the ground so as not to lose them while learning. My passion in planes was control line back in the 50s & 60s, flying stunt and combat. In RC did mostly gliders in later years.

Keith : you said it well !! I wish I could find the wright up about that store, it really was pretty famous, & if I recall, that original owner was a lawyer to start with.
John: funny you should mention control line !! I actually started with that also !! We even flew & built control line in my outfit in the Army. A very good friend of mine used to go to all the competition meets in Combat & stunt. He flew gliders with the famous Sal Tiebi. May not have the spelling right. Yes, sounds like you have some good help there if you get a chopper !!
You're giving me the Heebee Geebees to get one now too !! LOL !!

john/jefelectric, - Actually we live about 3 miles east of the center of town toward Hanover, PA. Traffic is not too bad tonight. We are getting out of town for part of the weekend. The restaurants and bars must be crazy.

Keith/1688torpedo, - that is a great memory you shared about the hobby shop and your brother.

We too have lots of train shops near us. Although, my favorite, B&E Junction, was bought out and moved to York , PA a few years back. Bill, the B of B&E was such a nice guy. He always took the time to chat with you. I never bought a ton of stuff from him, because he had mostly higher end locomotives, but he was patient answering my newbie questions as I was getting back into toy trains as an adult.

Finally got the new pieces of wood cut and stained to replace what I had pieced together on the shelf layout. I hope to get the pieces installed tomorrow and fasten the track. My brother brought me my 248 shell that he had "soda" blasted. I will try to paint it and bake it tomorrow AM. If the fini***urns out, I will then be able to reassemble the 248 and install the replacement hardware I purchased.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Mitch

I grew up with only one local hobby shop to go to. It was called the Loose Caboose. I have several O gauge trains from there, but at the time, I was into that Half O and I still have plenty of that gauge. The store is still there, but has been closed for years.
