John :[blue] That car was traveling along at about 35 -40 MPH, down around Rockview, Mo., my buddy said. Those cars just happened to have the newer shelf type couplers on them, I think they were originally designed for tank cars, that the knuckle of one car will sit right in the other cars coupler that has a sort of shelf built right into the top & bottoms of the coupler, so it can't get out, unless the cutting lever is pulled for switching. I remember when they came out with these on tank cars first years ago. Tank cars being about the most dangerous in a derailment !
Oh, I can't wait to hear how The Lone Ranger did too, on patrol !! [:D][:D][:D]

Happy Saturday guys!
Not much happening on this front. We did have thunder and lightning and I think about six drops of rain. After a few hours with Dell, got the computer fixed. It was locked up and was not about to be fixed without a little professional help.
I doubt I will get much train planning in today, we are having my son's 4th birthday party at Chuck E Cheese. Hey, the food might not be good, but at least the service is poor! Actually, it is a good deal in that they have plenty for the kids to play with and with 30 or so 3 and 4 year olds, our house will not be destroyed.
In thinking about it, I will have to design the layout for friends of my kids in mind, so that it will be able to be enjoyed, but not destroyed. I fear future parties.

Anyway, have a good day everyone.

Good afternoon,

John, Thanks for the info. I am familiar with the type of coupler that you are talking about. Didn't realize they would be used on a car as old as that one looks to be. The scale mfgrs. actually make a scale shelf coupler. No report yet from the Lone Ranger, hope he didn't get into a gun fight! [:(]

QUOTE: Think I am going to get cleaned up, get some lunch, and then head to one of our local gigantic home improvement lumberyards to pick up some wood for an around the room shelf for a loop of track to run pre-war trains. I have some 027 track and a transformer that I can clean up and use. IF it turns out OK, I might consider adding another level for a loop of Flyer trains. Trying to keep this as a very low cost project as the train budget is a little strained this month between buying pre-war trains and parts to restore them. I figure a couple of pieces of 1 by 4 and some nails won't be too expensive.

Mitch, Sounds like a plan to me. With all that space to run trains, you can really load up at York in October. [:D] [tup]

Chuck, I know it's tough being retired, but hang in there. I have that problem about what day of the week it is.

An update on my daughter computer. I blew out all the dust, in the back yard, with the air compressor. Boy those things sure can accumulate a lot of dust inside. Turns out the network card was fried and when I pulled that out, all seems to work. Really strange as the surge had to come through the DSL modem and that still works with the replacement computer. While I have her computer I am going to install the works into a newer case with a newer power supply and install a new network card. Unless some other problem pops up along the way that should take care of her problems for a while.

Heading out to diner this evening.

Will check in tomorrow.

Wow - I would think that the weight of that gondola would be too much for the coupler to hold up like that for very long.

John - I don't know if the docksider has a whistle or not - I'd guess not.... The Halloween Locomotive they released last year had no bell or whistle - you had to get the sound car for that. Sounds like you are a real pro with the computers!

Hello everyone,

CSXJohn it seems that the rail car companies have decided to make gondolas work like intermodal cars when they share a truck.[:D][:D][:D]

I bet that those Southern rail car companies got lazy when it was in the repair shop.[:D][:D][^][:P][:P]

Well, heading over to a friends house later for movie night, we had it here last night.

I'll talk to you all later.

Good evening all,

It is sunset and warm in SE Indiana with the temps in the 80s. I went to watch my twin nieces play soccer today. Their team won 4-2. Stopped at a nearby hobby shop to try to get some parts, but did not have much luck. Watched the IRL race tonight over at my parent's house. All the ladies in the family are having a baby shower for the younger daughter tomorrow so hopefully I will have a quiet day watching World Cup games. I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Keep on training,

Good evening-

Well guys, I bought the wood and started to install a wrap around the wall shelf for pre-war. I'll have to dig in the bins under the table to find some more track as the O-27 I had sitting in a bucket is pretty rusty. Most of that old track will have to go into the trash. I will have to polish and clean up some of what is salvageable. I have about half of the shelf done, it got too hot in the garage to keep working. I will finish up tomorrow and then stain the shelving and permanently install it. BTW only spent about $25.00, so I didn't break the bank.

Watching the Busch race. The Mrs. should be home soon after a day with her girlfriends.

Take care,

Mitch

Keith: Yeah - and Vincent Price was from St. Louis!

Congrats on the contract, thatboy37!

Dug a trench to put in a french drain under my deck - my son helped, too. I let him use the shovel and also I let him try to cut through some of that black 4 inch tubing with a small saw/knife. It was a little too tough for him, but it also nearly got my goat! It was fun working with him, hope to do a lot more of it over the years - a little scary, though - had to watch to make sure he didn't get hurt or something. Usually I just worry about how I'll hurt myself![;)]

Ate out at Bandana's restaurant - great homemade garlic bread, BBQ beef and pork, green beans and baked beans, too. [dinner] YUMMY

[code]Good Morning from Blueberryhill[/code]It is 61 degrees and cloudy. Going up to 76 today. Suppose
to get some rain later. Maybe thundershowers. Good day to stay inside.
I guess I am early this morning. Everyone has slept in.
I started a few projects inside. One of them is staining the front bay window. Never got
around to it when we built the house. Going pretty good. Wife is happy.
I think I will run trains this afternoon. I have to do some dusting.
Well, I think I'll grab some breakfast. Talk later.
Y'all have a great day.

Morning all. Got busted on the "My Layout" thread. John should have known [he asked the question] , no NS, no Chief Eagles layout. [;)] Roy and I conspired to pull that one. [}:)][;)] Jim, it is good to work with the kid. Frankie use to "help" me with our old layout when he was a little tot. He worked with me doing other projects too. Resulted in him being able to build, wire and etc. More rain showers today. Did not catch the horse folks yesterday. They rode early [due to heat and storms wrer predicted] and did a lot of riding up and down the back side of the dam. [:(!][V] Cabled the area off. Will get up early next Saturday and be waiting. Want to hide and hear their reaction. Then have a little chat with them. Off to see Pirarie Home Companion this afternoon. Have a great day and God bless all.

'mornin all. In the upper 70's and humid already this morning. It looked like a bit of a shower passed through last night, lawn was wet but concrete was already dry. I've already done the labors of the day: did the Sunday crossword; sprayed the tent catapilars on pecan trees, those that I can reach, the white flies on the gardenias, the jap. beetles on the hawthorne and what ever else is populating the shrubs; readied the pool for the granddaughters; and prep'd the rest of the "playground", a.k.a. yard, for the days activities.

I'll probably chill out watching the NASCAR race later this afternoon.

Chief - I'll have to wait till I'm home alone shen tieing up the phone isn't a problem to download the photos in the other post.

Good ploy Chief, I ate the whole thing! Seeing the posts that you put up and how time seems to be at such a premium, didn't understand how you were able to do it.

Fantastic pictures of Roy's, or is it the clubs?

Good job both of you............ If a fool is born every minute, I think I own about an hour of that time..

Morning all!

Welcome "thatboy37" to the forum and the Coffee Pot! Stick around for some good natured fun and a bit of ribbing (particularly if your layout is no taller than the soles of your shoes when standing).

Don - it is the club layout. Chief and I cooked up the ploy while we were visiting.

A bit warm here this monring, but temps have been in the low 90's and predicted as such for the rest of this week. It has been about 8-10 degrees cooler here this year than the last couple of years. We went to Applebee's for dinner last night and it was extremely pleasant at about 8 pm.

Have a great day all!

Hey Chuck !! The Chief has just a few more " Fact Finding Missions" to go on & then he'll get to the benchwork !! [:D][:D] Now, here's a picture for the Chief !! This was one of the trains, 7 inch width at Kirtland Oh. we stopped at on the way to see Tom at the museum. I guess the guy just got these & he has a couple cars for people to ride on & 2 New UP boxcars & an NS caboose that are just beautiful !!

Her's our own Topedo1688 ( Keith ), with a 1664 he recently restored & it looks great !! Notice the track plan of the layout by Keiths' head !!

Now a picture of Tom & Keith & myself by the trolley at the museum !! Tom is in the middle !! The trolley is also 7" gauge & electric !

Chief's will be up before mine I fear - my wife said no train table(s) until the basement is finished.

Well, I went down this afternoon to fix the drain on the shower I was installing before my operation in April - it said "no caulk" on the drain piece, but it leaked right off the bat. So I tried to remove it , caulk it and replace it. [banghead] Realized I couldn't reach the giant "nut" connector underneath, so tried to leverage up the shower stall a little - well, the stinking fiberglass stall tore right down the side! [%-)] I cannot explain how angry I became at that moment in time. Luckily, my son wasn't there, because I would have to explain a few terms that I don't want him to learn as yet. [:I] I tore down the whole thing and chopped it up with my sledge hammer. Turns out the "core' is nothing but heavy duty cardboard, sandwiched in fiberglass, with some thin plywood here and there. Thought I would have to replace a couple feet of 2 inch PVC and a trap - turns into a whole new stall. [V]

Evening all.
Thatboy37, welcome to "the Pot". You will certainly find a good crew here. Most generous and helpful bunch. As to your contract, congrats, and don't worry, this is the right place to post such personal things. We keep up on family and just about anything here. It is good to have you.

Chief, ya started to have me with the layout, I was thinking that you were either pulling our legs with regard to doing all that extra work and travel, or you pulled a fast one with the layout. It is impressive and I hope to have a good smaller version soon. By the way, did you just fly over, we are getting a thunderstorm.

Anyway, y'all take care and I will check in tomorrow. PS; I survived Chuck E Cheese.

Jim, Look on the brite side, you didn't have everything complete and discover the leak by finding a big nasty mess requiring even bigger repairs.
Just begining to wake up a bit, was at the museum all day friday and saturday, with the Kids Club running saturday morning. For something classified as a hobby and generally a bunch of fun, how come it can be so exhausting at times.
The weather has really been goofy here, awakened early saturday am by thunder and lightning which is about as rare as snow in Miami Beach. Biggest concern is dry ligthning starting brush fires since it has been so dry, we only get about 9 inches of rain per year and I think we've only gotten about six. Now today it is miserably humid, only 90* or so but the AC was on to get rid of the STICKIES.
Chief, How about you go buy Wally World and get real nasty lookin rubber snakes to scatter about on the back of the dam, wonder how the horses and/or riders mite react. [:o)]

Doug - oooh, evil[}:)], but a good idea. Might be worth a try. Of course, if the horse spooks and throws the the rider the Chief may be in hot water. A few years back, we had some yahoo riding his mountain bike down a steep drainage swale on school property. He crashes and injures himself. Even though the school is posted with no bikes, skateboards, etc, he hires himself a lawyer, threatens a lawsuit, and we wind up paying over $30K for his medical treatment including his helicopter ride to the trauma center. If I had been in charge, we would have gone to court over that one, but the bean counters figured paying the medical bills was cheaper than our own attorneys fees. What a world we live in....

Did not get to work on the layout yesterday. Friends called who were camping at a local campground and invited us for lunch after church. We went and sat around yakking with them till after 4. We came home and I watched the race ( Go Gordon!!!). After the race we went to the famous Lincoln Diner for dinner. By the time we got home it was pushing 9:00 PM and I was too beat from cheering on Jeff Gordon[;)] to work out on the wraparound shelf. Still have to figure out how I am going to bridge the shelf across the window opening without interfering with the curtains, etc.

Well, I must get going. Have a great day.
