Good evening from balmy Southern Ohio,

The daytime temp went up to 52°F today, but I slept right through it as I am on night shift today.

Mike C – Hang in there.  I can identify with son-in-laws who, shall we say are still searching for a purpose in life besides taking advantage of others.

Dennis – How is the boy?

Patrick – What post????  I may be odd but I love the smell of the feed with molasses

Jack – Bag balm is great stuff.  I learned about it when I worked for a block layer many years ago.

As far as drain cleaning I use mechanical means first and resort to chemicals as a last resort.

Buckeye – TGIF

May God bless

Jim

Jack - After reading your post I have to bow to the champion verboseter (it was a good post, I read every word). We do use Bag Balm on the cows teets ( let's see if that prints), but the most use is my wife uses it instead of lotion.

It worked! So my house is officially worth less - hmmm, why does this feel so... happy.

I tried your motivation, Buckeye, but it doesn't work in Illinois.

Don't worry, Jack, we'll show Brutus a good time.  Jack, did the plumber use one of those gigantic power-routers?

My wife promised me that a long time ago.  I'm still waiting. Whistling Smile,Wink, & Grin

He used every trick in the book except for some sort of ultra nasty chemical (you and I can't get, noxious fumes and can cause third degree burns) and pipe removal and replacement.  Used wires, power snake with different heads, a couple of different plungers, and pressurized air.  No good.  He tried the snake one last time, with the chemical scheduled next.  Lo and behold.  A big GLOOP, and the clog was history.  The snake prevailed.

Afternoon all. Working through more school issues with the middle boy. Motivation is a challenge.

Doug...Here's how you do it.

Son if you make good grades you could go to OSU, if you don't you will be going to Michigan.  Works wonders on children living in Ohio.Laugh

DougM....

Some more words of encouragement and a digression to a devious plan.

No two kids are born with the same brains, ability, and aptitude.  The persistence and dedication parts are the wild cards; they are learned behaviors, and kids can get discouraged easily.  Kids can start convincing themselves that they are not the brightest bulbs on the tree, and the whole thing death spirals from there.

But these differences are what makes each child precious and unique in his/her own right.  One child (in the same family) gets straight 'A' s with seemingly little effort while another struggles mightily to get Cs.  Bottom line is that both can get high marks, but the latter might have to work three times as hard to get them.  But the high marks are nonetheless achievable, for both.  As a parent, I struggled with the differing results each child brought home from school.  Then I got to thinking.....

With me, my father took aim at the one thing that hits home with every American male.  THE CAR.  My Dad started telling me in grammar school that for high school it would be "All 'B's or above and you get wheels.  Get just one C, and it's syonara to any car while you are living under my roof until the next report card."  I indeed had to work three times as hard with my schoolwork as my older sisters.

In desperation, I tried the same approach with my son.

Through freshman year, he was doing the c-d-f routine.  His excuses reasons were quite valid to him and would fill a book.  "I'm no good at Math.  I'm not that smart.  The teacher stinks.  The teacher hates me.  Everyone else is doing as badly as I am.  Why do I need to learn this?"  ETC.....Then I dumped the 'B' bomb on him, with wife backing me up (prearranged spousal oath to each other) and the rest is history.

He averaged 94%+ the rest of the way.  His turnaround was immediate.  His all out EFFORT and his consistency actually brought tears to our eyes.  He was given nothing but the opportunity, and he grabbed it.

After the first post 'B' bomb grading period, he was on cloud nine as he presented his first report card Sophmore year, hit a 93% average with no grade lower than 91.  I glanced at his report card and said with a straight face "You blew it."  His smile turned to dismay and he just lost it "What do you expect from me?  I did what you asked!"  I said "This report card makes us so proud of you, son, but you did blow it.  You can never look your mother and I in the face again and say 'I can't.....' "  A Hallmark moment.

Nothing is more of an incentive to a male of the species than the prospect of his driver's license/the use of the car, and nothing more terrifying than the very thought of life without them.

If it takes tutors, get them.  If it takes spreading the school load over Summers, do it.  If it takes joining yourself at the hip with the teachers, call the surgeon.  If it takes an incentive like a driver's license and the use of a car, dangle it.

LOL! That's a hoot. I'll have to try that one on my kids. I grew up in MD, but my kids are growing up in Westerville and are OSU fans (hard not to be here). BTW, my 4th grader is taking violin or the first time through her elementary school. She has a good ear and can play some songs on our piano by ear. She is using what she's learned in class to figure out how to play songs she knows on the piano on the violin and vice versa. I think learning a musical instrument is one of the best things children can be taught. Cheers, Dwayne.

Good afternoon, ya'll,

Hit 0 last night.  It was so cold that the dog's pee was solid before it hit the ground!  Just got nailed for $200 by the plumber.  The kitchen sink was clogged, and the snake just kept passing through the gelatinous clog and couldn't dislodge it or break it up.   If I wasn't standing there watching the length of cable feed (10 feet to the clog) and see this guy changing tips, I wouldn't have believed something in this pipe could have these properties.  My SIL had the same type of clog with his main drain, PVC, and his plumber had to actually cut the section out and replace it!  Any of you guys have this problem?

Sir James and Mitch......I'm partial to the Hudson myself.  With two of you running,  it sounds like you had twice the fun.

Brutus.....a hearty get well to your family.  Hope you dodge the bullet.  Hope Chewey didn't get sick as well.  If you get to Chicago this August on a road trip, along with the Rail Museum out his way, have DougM point you and the family to the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, the Museum of Science and Industry, and some deep dish pizza at either Due's or Uno's.  You won't regret it.

Buckeye......prayers for your friend.  As I get older, the illnesses my friends get remind me of my mortality.

Dennis......don't mess around with your son's ear infection.  Call a doctor. Whistling  At first I was impressed that your son has shown an interest in the violin, all the way to the part where you said a girl in his class plays.  Hmmmmm.  You're lucky she doesn't play the tuba. Big Smile

Chief.....it shocks me that you would think that Patrick has you and I beat in verboseness.  While you and I may have talked to a draw (not drawl) on the phone, I think he's got a long way to go to catch us.  Re the shoes, this addiction must be tied into the name Pam since 500 pair would just about cover my wife's Summer collection.

MikeC......family!  I can't tell you how discouraging it is for me to have a loved one come to me for advice, then do the opposite, and then come whining to me about the outcome Banged Head.  I spent the better part of a year helping an older sister get into a condo and then renovating it in a fashion she could afford.  The amount of personal time I spent on that one was measured in weeks.  Within a year, she called me on the phone and said wanted to move.  She couldn't understand why I would have nothing to do with it any more, but my wife knew.  That "help and advice" strained my marraige, and I vowed never again.  Family will burn you out and leave you for dead sometimes.  Lots of hurt feelings that don't subside quickly.  If you disagree with them, they think you are either criticizing them or are not supportive.  A lose-lose proposition.

Lee.....seriously, all of us have our weather challenges.  While I freeze to death, move mountains of snow, and send huge checks to the fuel oil company, you are battling hurricanes, heat, and electric bills.  Maybe we should join forces, move into Chief's lake house, and split the difference weather wise.

RT.......should we nickname you Dizzy?  Hope you continue to make progress with that one.  My wife had similar symptoms.  The root cause was never pinpointed.  Doctors were stumped.  After a year, a simple reduction in her sodium intake seemed to do the trick with no reoccurence.  Go figure.

DougM.....hope your propert tax appeal was successful.

Patrick......ever use Bag Balm?  We're using it on the dog's cropped ears.

Fife and Laz.....my wife will not permit this beer inventory reduction project at my place until we sign a contract stating we will put the toilet seat down.  And that includes the bear.

RaySP......prayers for your friend.  Every time I get discouraged with my physical deficiencies, I find someone else far worse off than I am.  My college roommate is struggling with diabetes and it's impact on his eyesight.....at the age of 58!  And here I am, whining to this forum about what snow shoveling does to me.  Shame on me.

Later, gang.

That shouldn't be a problem, the Chief has one and forgets HIS posts all the time.  He's really good at it then he posts them twice, and forgets that.  I think a lot of it is because sometimes he doesn't understand them himself.

Dennis-

How old is your son?  Any piano background?  I believe for even the youngest the piano lays a tremendous foundation for everything else.  If you do choose to start with violin do not buy a full size one, little fingers struggle.  The best way for young beginners is to enroll in the Suzuki method, it's an amazing program.  Tried and proven.

Doug, you could always take one of the latest business magazines and tell them that your house has suddenly been valued 30% less.  Main city where the hospital is has just increased everyone's tax burden with valuation on last year's study.....not taking into account current conditions and forcast.

For the musically inclined here, my son want to learn violin.  Not the easiest instrument in the world to learn, but any instrument is a plus.  One of the girls in his class plays and it would be good that he not be the only one learning.

Just waiting for one case to get done and then I am outttta here!  Look forward to doing a little bit of layout work if all goes well.

Afternoon all. Working through more school issues with the middle boy. Motivation is a challenge. It'll all work out (I keep telling myself) but sure is stressful. Off to pitch the county on reducing my property taxes - wish me luck - LOL. Hmm, maybe I should put on the ratty-looking jeans? Too bad I shaved already.  Patrick, don't worry about that post. You are always most welcome here.

Heavy rains continue in Southern California this morning.  Luckily, it's coming in showers and not constantly.  Had to pump more water out of pool this morning.  Seems like we had at least 4 inches since yesterday by my home made rain gauge.

It's count your blessings time again for me.  Just learned that an old friend of mine in Washington state broke his hip and had a mild stroke to boot.  Just when I thought I had problems he is alreadly getting kidney dialysis and has had both feet amputated due to diabetes. He definetely did not need this.  God bless him and help him through this crisis.  Makes my issues a lot more manageable.

Patrick, glad to see you have found a place on the forum.  I don't think anyone is ignoring you now, if they ever were.

Prayers for the sick on the forum.  Stay warm and keep posting.

Thanks for the kind thoughts regarding the son.  He will be OK, just gotta suffer through it and take his meds.

Kurt, Pennsy has a place on the east side towards York called Sesame Place.  My sister has taken her child there, they all had fun.  Idea is that you can take your crew there and time it with a York visit!  It's all in the planning.  This way Dad can have his fun for a few days and kids can have theirs...and Momma thinks Dad is great.  I would take mine this next York meet, but son has exams.

Not much going on.  Had a talk yesterday with the Cardiovascular Services director.  He is the one who's son died a few weeks ago from having a seizure and aspirating.  His son was very popular in the area of Florida they are from.  Aparently, they want to have a fundraiser walk-A-Thon to donate to the seizure dissorders association.  He wanted to get ahold of John Travolta who also just lost his son to the same thing.  Long story short, through contacts in the movie industry, we got his info and may make it happen...gotta see.  It would be nice if something good can come from such tragedy.

Back to the music posts....what about Tex Ritter?  I was listening to "Blood on the Saddle" this morning.  Boy will that one try the bride's patience!

God Bless,
Dennis

Good Morning Chief - Do you want molasses and peanuts mixed in with the corn?

Mike C - The up side to kids asking your advice, if they don't take it they can't come back later and complain when things don't work out.

Good Morning,

Starting to thaw out from the big freeze in southeast Florida! Now up to 53 degrees, with a high near 65, supposed to be warmer for weekend. I think we should rename Florida, it should be Frosty Country! Most of Florida is between two oceans so the weather is effected by many patterns in the upper levels of air.

Doing a few things outside as it was just too cold to stay outside more than a couple of minutes the past two days.

rockisland52, I am not moving up to snow blizzard country!!! You can't pay me enuff money to deal with ice & snow again!!!!!! Just because you have a day or two of warmer weather is no reason for me to move there, you have far too many days of bad weather!! I grew up in Stratford Connecticut, we moved away when I was ten, I remember very severe winters in Connecticut!!

Maybe I can run some trains in a few minutes.

Morrning all.  Getting ready to hit the road to the lake house.  Wife who wanted to go yesterday evening is dragging and doing things like putting up her 500 pairs of shoes she has lying around on the floor.  Enough shoes to open a shoe store. Shock  I know no one on the fourm who has a wife with as many shoes as my wife has. Thumbs Down    Cold but warming fast.  Got to get loaded up and get going.

Mike C., you said sunny day.  So let the sunshine in and face it with a grin.  After all, the world could be worse.  You could live in Ohio. Whistling

MOOO MOOO I want my corn and hay.  Especially on this cold day.  Morning Patrick.

Rock, Lucy has "Pink Baby" [a rabbit she picked out at Pet Smart the day Pam got her].  It is a pink rabbit with a squeeky clicking thing inside.  She bites down on it and it squeeks and clicks.  Getting ragged and has been repaired many times.  Her security blanket.  She brings it to you and wants you to get it away from her and throw it down the hall.  She rushes and retrieves it biting it in the middle so it squeeks and clicks.  She will take it to the lake and every where she goes.

All yuz giz in MI and WI, stay warm.  The old guy in Ioway, heard you had warm weather and are sending it my way while you crawl back into the deep freeze. Laugh
