Well ............. we are holding our own, barely, with all the rain/flooding and tornado damage.  We are fortunate as we live at the top of high hill and we will never have flood damage but our kids in Cedar Falls are barely clinging to a dry basement because of pumps and staying awake in shifts.  They had no new water entering yesterday but the forecast for tomorrow is absolutely horrible with the possibilities of heavy rains.  The Today Show is in Cedar Falls this morning and that's never a good sign, hopefully the Weather Channel won't show up .... you know you are in trouble when their satellite trucks show up.  Caboose Stop Trains is about a half mile from the river and I'm hoping the levee's built in '94 will hold.   So much for the 100 year flood theory.

I am fighting humidity problems in my basement, we have central a/c and have the dehumidifier running, I'm going to buy a couple more fans and possibly another dehumidifer. We are going to OK but what a pain the butt this is especially after our L O N G winter and N O spring.  I see many more folks having bigger problems than us, pray for them.

Good Morning

We have a rainy 67,but no storms since last nite. After this week I will be daytime alone as wife will be watching two gr.sons for the summer. Better they stay at their house than here. As far as I am concerned, we raised our family and should not have to do it twice. Nobody get mad. I do understand there are times in life when we all need to pitch in.  Not the case here, daughter and SIL work and I have told them many times I do not like this babysitting arrangement. Of course the wife is part of the problem as she goes along with this business.SoapBox [soapbox]Well I guess I will just enjoy the rain and cooler temps.,,TTFN.   S.J.

Good Morning everyone.

Jim, prayers for your brother.  Tough round he is going through.

Brent, the caboose remark was in reference to when you were building the shed, they posted some caboose photos and asked if that is what it was going to look like.  I just carried it a bit further.  All in good fun.

Doug, will say prayers again this morning, it'll all work out.

God Bless,

dennis

Greetings from Taxachussetts.  I got behind again.....been a few days.  We finally got everyone's hot weather....been in the 90s for the past 3 days, high 80s day before that  The two dogs must have eaten a drug-laced batch of food because they go out in this sweltering heat and take a nap on the deck, without using sunscreen no less.  With the a/c cranking, the electric bill should be a real treat: just when you think you have survived the winter heating bills.....Today I may be paying $4.00 for 87 octane, first time.

Anyone out their with a relative who steadfastly refuses to get a cell phone?  Probably not.  My FIL who is 87 lost his landline for 3 days, again.  Asked him for the zillionth time "Why didn't you just use your cell phone?  Oh yeah, you don't got one."  What happens if he and MIL are out and about in 95 degree heat or a blizzard and the car breaks down?  Yesterday I think I got to him.  Asked him to add up his local, toll, and long distance bills.  When I told him what I was paying for cellular and two numbers, he nearly choked.  Then he thought he had me: "What about what it will cost me in minutes to call you and my daughter and talk for hours like we do?"  "It will cost you nothing if you get Verizon, because we have Verizon, Verizon-to-Verizon on a nationwide plan costs nothing beyond the basic package cost."  He's taking the suggestion under advisement.  Maybe he'll get with the program when he's 90.  Landline phones are dying, nothing but a replication of service with no added benefit.

With Sunday's heat I got the bright idea to avoid WORK, to not use the oven/stovetop (and heat up house), and to not stand outside at the grill in the broiling sun. Family coming to dinner. Picked up cooked fried chicken, deli salads, and fruit for dessert at the grocery store.  Made a garden salad.  Dinner [dinner]  Great plan.  So while I was watching sports with SIL, wifey decides to boil up a storm on stovetop and steam corn on the cob while heating up the chicken in the oven. Banged Head [banghead]  Then she's telling me how the a/c isn't working too well because it's putrid in the kitchen. Banged Head [banghead]  Bring up boxfan from basement to cool her down.  Not 30 minutes later she's adjusting the thermostat upward.....now too cold. Banged Head [banghead]

Doug and John.....check out that electric plan in Illinois where you pay floating hourly rates.  My FIL had $.075 per kwh flat rate but is now saving about 40% on his electric, though you have to alter your lifestyle a bit by running heavy draw items in off peak hours (9pm to 5am).  For the a/c, he has his programmable thermostat freeze out my MIL from 3-5 am, down to 66-68 degrees.  In the 90 degree plus weather, the house never hits 78 degrees until about 11 pm when the rates have fallen below $.075 per kwh again.  The beauty is that you get by phone or pc a fairly reliable cost forecast based on anticipated total system demand, updated regularly.  FIL also gets a phone call from the electric company if the cost forecast changes significantly for the worse!

Brent....did you ever get the auto a/c issues squared away?  If not, make sure you have an a/C plan for when you get sent to "exile caboose."  Short of that, flash those 6-pack abs and SuzieQ will forget what it was you didn't get done. Whistling [:-^]  At last count I think you have 3 vehicles for 2 people and only 1 fully functional.  Chop chop!!!!!

Jason....famine to feast.  OT must sure be welcome right now Thumbs Up [tup], though time with the kiddies has disappeared Thumbs Down [tdn].  Glad to hear your mom is hanging tough, though over the long haul she'll need a lot of support from her favorite son (that would be you) when the treatment gets her down.  Prayers, brother.  As much as I make sarcastic remarks about the challenges of family, their support means a lot physically and mentally, a veritable lifeline.

Don....I turned on the pc at 12:36am and began reading about your visit to the steakhouse.  Dinner [dinner]  I resisted all temptation and had a bowl of Special K with the chocolate bits.  Cravings for a ribeye faded.

Dennis.....I'm curious.  How do you "go over" your son'e Chinese homework with him?  It's Greek to me.  They don't even use the alphabet.  I think you are able to help because your handwriting looks similar.  Big Smile [:D]

Steve.....your insurance carrier investigator called about a claim you put in for your train wreck and asked if you are prone to operating under the influence.  Told him you spent too much time basking by the pool, got heat stroke, and tried to treat it with Bacardi 151. Laugh [(-D]

Jim S/P....will be saying a prayer for your brother that he clears this hurdle.  Some times I wonder if God does give us more than we can handle at one time.  Isn't your ordination coming up?  And how did your sermon go a few weeks back?  I don't recall you mentioning it.

Fife and J&J hit 2K and 1K in posts respectively.  Congratulations, though I think John should be penalized credit for 500 posts when he abandond us for a while post op.  Pain killers must have gotten to you, or you didn't want wife to catch you playing on the pc while she was out in the elements mowing the lawn.  Evil [}:)]

Fife....any more setbacks with son's reset broken arm or do you have him out hauling topsoil?  You were the one with the tons of topsoil to be spread, right?  And congratulations on his graduation from middle school.  That boy shows a lot of promise because he was able to get through it despite your "help."

Chief....welcome home.  Guess you listened when they told you to get out of Dodge.  You are coughing again.....hmmmmm.  Where do you get all of this water from when you do all of your watering?  Your pond?  Up nawth we pay by usage.  Even when we water lawns and gardens, we get nailed with the sewer fee, even though none of the water goes down the sewer.  Soon our annual outdoor watering bans will be announced to conserve water, so the lawns and gardens will go to Roseyville in a handbasket.

Doug....this too will pass with the daughter.  When we sign up to be a parent (I'm sure your wife made you sign a contract) stuff is bound to happen.  We were just too smart in our youth to get caught. Whistling [:-^]

Chuck.....a/c bites the dust at just the wrong time. Sigh [sigh]  A buddy of mine had his go South two weeks ago and he was tired of pouring money into it.  $4,000 later he's cool but his wallet is empty. Sad [:(]  Maybe you should Tardis back and change your profession to heating/air conditioning.

GregM.....hang in there.  Have you thought about the temp to permanent approach?  My wife recruits for her company and that is how they get a lot of their permanent employees.  But they get to road test them for a couple of months first.

Jon....were you able to dodge all those recent tornadoes?  One passed to the South of my father in law near Aurora Illinois with the last round of ugly weather.

Roy....are you repacing all your floors or reconditioning some, hardwood in particular?  Hope you don't get done with all of this remodelling and find out that termites ate half the support lumber in your house.  You must be standing by your new low e windows and wondering why you didn't get those long ago.  Great product.  Doesn't that glass keep furniture from fading as well?

Got to run off ot the hospital.  Got a 78 year old relative who went to a b-day party Saturday, missed a step, and broke a hip falling down the stairs.  Or was it broke a hip and fell down the stairs?  Must have been too many jello shots.  Those older folks can be party animals. Surgery yesterday, successful.  Bone density good.  Will be on her feet today.  Ya gotta love those skilled mechanics (aka surgeons), non-union too.  A couple of screws and a plate and she's good to go, though she's bummed out because she had to cancel a trip this week to Portugal.

Jack

Chief/88 - I will be spending my summer trying to change my little Farmer Ted into more of a Ferris Bueller.

RockIsland - arm doing well; the "torture" is not being able to go swimming...then listening to the littlest princess describe how great the water is...

jonadel - Folks pay top dollar for waterfront property around these parts, enjoy it.

Dennis - I remember! It also carried on when I was discussing that that LTS was in discussions with some local businessman about bringing a caboose to town to restore it and put it on display... Still - I need to cut down some trees... and I could use some 'expert' assistance, and seeing that you recently cut down trees and are a 'licensed' surgeon I figured you'd be perfect for the job! Wink [;)]

Jack - Nope auto a/c is still on the fritz. Can't get that taken care of till Susie-Q's Solara is fixed. I keep reminding my friend that I need to get my A/C fixed or I soon will melt in this heat. Soon... hopefully... soon.

HI GIZ,

WOW its 94 as of 2 bells here this afternoon.  Got up early at 530 was cooler at 68 so took dog for walk then did a nice easy 4.5 miles.   Showered went to school for last day, no computer so read paper then visited with principal.  Thats it I am officially done for the summer.

AS ALICE COOPER SANG " SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER".  One of my favorites all right.

BUCKEYE can't wait till friday nite.  I'll bring the big ANTI GRITs machine in case of any attack.  Should be a great meet with YOU and JOHN.  Great talks about DA SOUTH are in order.

BRUTUS and KURT LOVE DA TARDIS where are they available for purchase?  Love keeping those doors opened, get that hole feeling of being weightless.

Not much happening now.  Taking it easy.  Congrats Laz on the final day.  I have a trauma cart that I have been making a project of and should have it in service soon.  It is definately needed.  We have one particular anesthetist who, anytime we have an emergency heart, when she is on call, we have a gunshot wound right afterward.  It is timely that we get this in action now.

On a personal note, if anyone wants to see the movie we did, Sony has come up with 750 theaters so far and if you get people in your area to go to www.fireproofthemovie.com and follow the site to where you can request it in your city.  If enough folks do request it, it will open there as well.  It does have a 1:1 scale train scene that is pretty good, if I do sayso myself.  Anyway, It will be premiered September 26th.

God Bless,

dennis

Thanks for the help with the insurance adjuster Jack but I don't think he bought it. He showed up with two guys in white coats and made me look at ink blots for an hour. I told him I actually drive the trains better when I drink because it makes me concentrate harder.

I finally disguised that hole in the wall between rooms.

First the before picture. You can see that this area needed some work.

Now the midpoint picture.

And the final result.

This is a typical Pennsylvania Mountain, really just a high hill.

John,
That is really a nice job on the mountain ! However, I don't think it would pass the inspection, I can't believe YOU filled that outlet with all that dirt and rock.

Laz/Buckeye, Sure hope you guys are well suited for your trip on Friday.  Those fields in that area can really change aroma quickly.  Maybe it was spoiled grits, not sure, but have seen them become very noticeable practically overnight.  BTW aren't grits derived from Soy Bean hulls?

Evenin' Folks.

Looks pretty nasty in the midwest and maybe more coming. Keep them water wings handy Jon.

Had to chuckle last nite, was watching one of my favorite shows "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" on the food network. He visited a place in Philly and sampled a couple of items that he had never eaten before, Scrapple & S.O.S. Yumyum.......Dinner [dinner]

Shipped off one of my RI Geeps to have it converted from magnetraction to traction tires, hope the conversion lives up to my expectations. Whistling [:-^]

Good Evening Gentlemen:

Everytime I think things are slowing down, they pick back up.  Sad [:(]  Work is driving me crazy!  The good news it with all of the hours I am putting in, I don't think about the fact that I cannot play golf...yet.

I did cut the grass this past weekend and I continue to work on my rehab.  I hope everyone else is doing well.

RIJack:  Thanks for the Comed tip, I will be looking into it.

Regards,

John

Doug,
I have an SD9 that has both magnatraction and traction tires. Can't make use of magnatraction on the Atlas track, but thought that was interesting. Due to the fact that it only has 1 motor and little weight it can't pull much up the second level incline. I am thinking of opening it up and adding some weight to it... we'll see. I've been holding off on trains lately as I am contemplating what to do with one section of the layout that I am not happy with.

Edit: Just noticed this....

Crap On Cardboard? Who eats that mess? Scrapple I can eat, as long as it is made properly (needs to have the right spices and be fried somewhat crisp)... best when dredged in Dark Karo Syrup!

Brent, If the SOS is done right it is great, if not yuckie poo. Scrapple quick fried and served up with a couple of eggers or just on white bread. Dinner [dinner]

My purpose in converting the Geep is due to the lack of steel track on the club layout and it also seemed that the magnetraction on these units was really poor at best, not near as strong as my old post war.

Wife took off with kids today and went shopping.  There went $1000 for new beds for the kids and a matching dresser for the son.  Luckily the mother-in-law refinished an old bed frame and headboard/footboard for my daughter or it would be worse.

Hope you stay dry, Jon and your family.

Coffee is getting cold, so I'll just pop in the TARDIS, shoot back in time and pick all you guys up, maybe hit Sir Jame's house?!  God bless and TTFN.

Good night all.  Back from movie and then talked to Jon E for over an hour.  Always love chatting with him.  Great guy and always interesting.  Wish we lived closer but he can have the flooding.  Prayers for his son.  Trying to keep water out of his basement with pump.  Jon said his son did 4 hours of "sandbag duty" today.  Not good.

Think the heat wave is suppose to break and be in the 80's tomorrow.  Hope we get some rain too.  Well, had a ton of popcorn at the movie so will sit and drink a glass of sweet ice tea before bed.  Maybe a Klondike bar.

Brent is trying to eat cardboard and does not like grits. ??Question [?]Confused [%-)]

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a sunny 55 degrees. Going up to 84 today with sunshine.

Today is a very busy day. I need to drive up to Cambridge and do the weekly grocery shopping. Then, I am waiting on the A/C guys to call for an appt..  Need to get this unit fixed. Getting tired of putting money into it. Gas here is still at $4.05 a gallon. Looks like it only will get worse.

No time for trains today. Darn.

Dining car is here and it's time for breakfast. Later.

Y'all have a great Wednesday.

Mornin' Fellas.

I see reading comprehension isn't a requirement in the South. Must be all the heat? Whistling [:-^] I'm not trying to eat cardboard - Crap On Cardboard is my name for S.O.S. I can't stand the stuff and my mother and little sister (who is the world's most picky eater) love the stuff. IMHO it looks like new born vomit. Wink [;)]

Well tonight Comcast comes to install digital cable. Lost out DirecTV again last night due to the storms... did not lose power... did not lose internet connect (Comcast). Converting to Comcast is going to save $20/month too. Getting the DVR too so that will be nice... I will be able to record all the shows Susie-Q and I watch and then we can watch them in 1/3 the time the next night! Thumbs Up [tup] Will be able to compare the picture quality too because the DirecTV doesn't get disconnected till Saturday. Will report back on findings.

Have to take two switches back to the LTS... now I need 1 O54 LHS and 1 O54 RHS... LTS owner called and asked what I need... told him 'I need 1 O54 LHS and 1 O54 RHS', 'OK They are here'... I go in, look at the box to verify that they are O54, pay for them, put them in the trainroom, now I go to install them this past Saturday and... THEY ARE O45! Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 80s.  Maybe tonight I will finally get to play soccer with the kids.   Monday night I did absolutely nothing.  Tuesday I practiced a little with the high school kids and watched a tape of a recent F-1 race.  Was at computer conference all day yesterday for government workers.  Some speakers were good and some were atrocious.  Sounds like several people are having it bad here on the pot.  Thoughts and prayers going out to all who need them.  I had the usual fare on the dining car for breakfast.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Fife - nothing is 'changing' I am just trying to figure out how to handle the second level near the computer nook. I'm going to use a bridge to support the upper track, that is certain. The left end of the bridge will be tied into the tunnel portal below, but the right end is where I've worked myself into a pickle. Just need to take the time to setup some styrofoam, and start cutting and triming till I get something I like. Right now I have a 2 inch thick section of foam up that I carved into a cliff face, but I really need 3 inches at the top so I need to either add some foam at the top or redo the whole thing. Then I need to figure out what type of bridge to use, leaning toward something similiar to what I used for the gorge bridge... which hasn't been finished either... lots to work on and just haven't been motivated to get at it... and I don't want to half-*** it either. Morning all. Sunny and pleasant - the type of days tourists comment upon.  Got to grade four classes in addition to real work. No one seemingly in the office today.

Marvelous mountain, John!
