Good morning from not so sunny California this AM.  We're getting a little drizzle and I guess June gloom has arrived. Ran some trains yesterday and cleaned track on the layout before the temperature ran me out of the garage.  Having a get together tomorrow with old friends from our Thursday night train group.  There are'nt many of us left but we still get together even after 30 years.  Tomorrow we are visiting one of the guys with an outdoor O Gauge layout.  Happy birthday to Cheif!  Ray

On the topic of kids and grades, using the carrot or the stick.  I am sorry to bore many of you with what follows.  But our kids are so important to us and yet can be so exasperating when it comes to school and grades.  The story bears repeating.

My father observed that by the age of 12 I had already begun the discussion of getting my driver's license, a mere 4 years ahead of time.  I had already memorized the Illinois Rules of the Road for the written test!  He therefore seized the opportunity to proclaim: "BEES and wheels."

That meant that if I didn't get a B or above in every subject, there would be no access to a driver's license and/or a vehicle in his house until the next semester report card.  No excuses, no exceptions.  Need I tell you how that influenced my attitude toward schoolwork?  Or how I sounded the alarm and asked for help AS SOON AS I began to struggle in a subject.  Funny how the right button, when pushed, clarifies matters.

At one point my Junior year of high school (age 16 and with a driver's license) I had a D going in, you guessed it, Trigonometry.  The academic dean gave me a choice of withdrawing from the course and taking it over in summer school.....or rolling the dice and finishing out the course.  My father said it was my choice, but there would be no car until I brought home the Trigonometry bacon = no car for the summer.

I learned a lot that semester about a self imposed sense of urgency, the value of a tutor, and the necessity to put in whatever time it took to overcome subjects I struggled with.  I aced the final and got a got a B for the course.  My father smiled when he saw that particular report card.  I just never knew it was a smile of satisfaction, not necessarily pride.  He had figured out a way of lighting a fire under me and teaching me that with enough effort anything is possible.

As an aside, many corporations with tuition reimbursement programs for employees have similar stipulations.  B or above for reimbursement.

I called the Chief this morning for his birthday.  He mumbled such that I couldn't understand his Suthern talk, but he said something like, "Who the..mell is this! Its five perty in the marning."  I guess he didn't know it was me.  How was I to know that Roger's Corner's time is an hour earlier than Roseyville's?

Roy....Did you really send a box of Malto Meal to the Chief for his birthday?  You are so bad! (I wished I had thought of that.)

fifedog.............We go to all this trouble putting on this party for the Chief and wouldn't you know it he is out sucking up to some big shots in Raleigh under the guise of OFFICIAL Duties.  I don't see how drinking Martinis and eating jumbo shrimp can be consider official Roseyville duties. BUCKEYE,

Happy Birthday Chief!  As a special present, I left the TARDIS at your house, key in the usual place, so you could go back and have seconds and thirds at the big spread they laid out for you!

Doug, aw shucks!  I will keep an eye out, that just means there is a better one you are "meant" to find, so don't take it hard!

88 - Pressure wash TARDIS, good idea!

Laz - doors were real quiet when I sneaked some klondikes earlier.  BTW - Chewy really likes these things too!  Thanks a million, man!

No trains today.  Did the washer shuffle.  New one is in, old one is out.  Need to put on front feet and level, but I was tired out from moving a bunch of tubes of sand out of the way.  I threw them off the truck a while back and they have been a thorn in my side since then.  Wife was babysitting friends' kids, so I took the chance to stay outside working, away from the squealing and bouncing frenzy of kids Whistling [:-^]

Sir James and Kurt, sorry I missed you on emails.  Prayers for all to be well - it seems like we've all been sick a lot this year.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good Early Morning Y'all!  Chief, hope you have recovered from your "duties".  Have an early case this morning and waiting for them to bring the patient to the room.  Was a quiet night last night and hope it is quiet today as well.  Supposed to get to 98 again today and same through the weekend.  A cold front is expected Sunday night and should have the temps all the way down to 96 by next week.  Yeah!! [yeah]

Seriously considering a Lionel Legacy engine.  Have the system, just want something nice to use with it.  It will be nice to have it all up and running, and no, I have not gotten an update from Lionel.

Well, better get going.  Hope it is a great day for all.

God Bless,

dennis

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a clear and sunny 65 degrees. Going up to 90 today, with sunshine. It's going to be a hot one.

Today, is a busy day. I have a few things to do around the house and some errands to run this afternoon. Not too bad. I might get some time in the train room. later. Need to run the trains.

Grass is growing like crazy. I will be mowing in the next few days. Needs a lot of drying out from the days of rain.

Dining car has arrived and it's time for breakfast. Later.

Y'all have a great Thursday.

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps near 90.  We went from a cool spring to a hot summer overnight.  Other than Chief's birthday and my daughter getting a new job, yesterday was a bad day.  Work created a vacuum, the soccer game was postponed, and the gym where the indoor track at the YMCA is located was hotter inside than it was outside.  Lucas did work on his "thank you" notes.  At least I did not have to drive today.  It was the usual fare on the dining car this morning.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Morning All

Sorry Laz,Red Wings won, but my wife is happy this morning, and a happy wife is a rare thing so I'll go along with her on this.

A very still and sunny morning, expecting heat to arrive here also, which of course could mean storms. The grass could use a haircut but everything is wet, so I am going to wait a day or so.

As usual no plans yet for today but I'm sure some kind of mischief will come my way and I'll be ready.   TTFN.........S.J.

Good morning (I think) from a dark Crystal Lake where another Iowa storm is rolling in. Wow is it black outside. Have to go to over later to a friend who recently lost his son. Weather matches the mood. Looks like the Chief enjoyed his day. Heard the upcoming MTH Coronation engine will require 072 curves. It is sure a fine looking engine.

Mornin' Fellas.

Well I made it home last night during 'The Storm', the house was still intact, which was nice... but we had no power (out at 3:00pm) and won't have it back till 3:30pm tomorrow. This is the second 24+ outage in less than 6 months. I think it is time for a generator.

Waiting on some USPS and FedEX deliveries...

Morning.  Out to spray and then mow.  Heat index 105 or more.  Brad, crazy neighbor, has been "hollering" since yesterday afternoon.  Think the heat and his brain damage is getting to him.  Hope I can talk to him and get him settled.  Fly out tomorrow morning for a Cabela's event.

Doug --

Sorry about the bad weather we are sending your way, it's awful here. We had tornadoes just south of us last night plus more rain, our ground is 100% saturated and we are now experiencing flash floods everywhere. Our horrible winter weather has extended into spring and now summer, worst of all however is that tonight's weather is supposed to be just as bad if not worse, UFFDA.

I was going to attend a deployment ceremony tonight as 161 Iowa Air National Guardsman are leaving for another tour of Iraq, for most it's their 3rd trip to the sandbox. Hopefully they will all come home safely one year from now. I won't be going as the forecast calls for high winds, rain and the refiring of tornadoes plus I do not enjoy riding at high speeds in the dark and rain on the interstate.

Good Morning

Hope all the weather clears quickly and no damage, from the storms going through.  It is pleasant here mid 70's, clear skys.

Brutus, thanks for droping off the sonic screwdriver, I've had to put it a a box and wrap it in tape, it is really quick.  Wife has been asking about the whirring sound from the train room, told her what it was.  So she said to take the day off and use it before IT goes on the fritz.  So, it has worked out well !  I get the day off today.  Will have to do a couple of chores, get her car Smog tested, and mow the front yard.  Then see what I can do in the train room.

Went too our club last night, some aspects of the discussion were somewhat heated.  A couple of the "artistic" guys had some significant conflicts regarding the work and design of their projects.  One guy put some plastic panels up to prevent damage, the panels make the others work obscure.   Ive determined that I will continue as the Operations Session guru, and leave the rest to the others.

This weekend we have the BIG Train show in town, it is G Scale primarily, but there is a lot of good info and vendors that has stuff easily transferrable to O scale.  I have my AF Water Tower situated on the layout and it is working great, spout comes down on command.  Want to see if I can get some water running sound affects at the show.  Should be easily available.

Another fire going on in LA, in the garment district.  A city block is burning very significantly, so far noone is hurt, just a lot of damage.  Old buildings, no insurance, one heck of a blaze !

Will be back later.

Hello Gentlemen:

A humid day here in Chicagoland.  May also get some thunderstorms.  I see the surgeon today (it has been nine weeks since the surgery).  Hopefully, he will ease some of my movement restrictions.

Chicago made the first cut for the 2016 olympics.  If political corruption were a criteria, Chicago could become the permanent home of this event.  Tony Rezko was found guilty and the papers are buzzing about a potential indictment of the Governor (our previous Guv is already in the slammer).  In addition, Mr. Rezko was a big contributor to Senator Obama.  Ahhh....there is nothing like Chicago politcs.  This reminds me of the movie, The Untouchables:

Candian Mounty:  "Sir!  I do not approve of your methods."

Eliot Ness: "Yeah?  Well, you're not from Chicago."

John

John, can you imagine the boondoogle if Chicago got the Olympics - how the money would flow - into the wrong pockets. Interesting how resilient the pols are in the face of a decades-long drumroll of federal corruption indictments. At least they got the former Gov. . .

I like how the IOC wants to see details about an 'enhanced' mass transportation infrastructure in Chi - home of the CTA - LOL.

Storms gone through - very humid.

Still hot and humid here - high 90's and maybe some showers tonight and tomorrow. Heavy winds here with nearly sustained 20-25 mph winds and gusts to 40-45 mph. Due to that big low pressure area and all the suction in Ohizo. The good news is it is blowing all our trash into OK and points north...

Don B - enjoy your day off!

Construction continues with the normal glitches - previous owner had applied fabric to the walls of the dining room - which meant the sheetrock was so damaged that we are having to replace half of it - could buy a really nice Caddy for what all of this is costing...

Have a great day all!

Hello Doug:

It's days like these that make me happy that I do not live in Cook County.  Where did things go wrong?  How does Illinois go from the "Land of Lincoln" to the "Land of indicted Governors?"  Just in my life time we have had Dan Walker, George Ryan and now, soon to be indicted, Rod Blagojevich.  It is just shameful.

John
