Dave, this was really terrible.  I mostly grew up in Kirkwood.  My parents were driving home on Lindbergh last night when 4 police cars sped by them and when they got home, they found out about the shooting.  Apparently the gunman was a local hothead who would go in and stir things up, but nobody ever thought things would go this way.  This is over near an area called Meechum Park, which was an all Black neighborhood for like the last 100 years.  I used to work over there as a kid and it was a very nice old neighborhood, but the government went in and put in a housing project in the middle of it and moved in a bunch of public housing people back in the 70's I think and it has had a serious crime problem ever since then.  A policeman was shot down there a couple years ago - big case locally, and since then police won't go there alone.  There was a big mall that was going to be built there, but the locals held out for too much $$$ for their properties and it all fell through.  Anyway, from what I heard this morning, there is one victim in serious condition in the hospital and everyone else is dead, including the mayor.  They had a lady in the news last night who was in the room and saw the gunman walk in and shoot the first policeman in the head, then just got down on the floor and waited to be killed - how terrible.  Thank God that more people didn't die.

I worked in Kirkwood when I was in high school and off and on from 1998-2006 or so (my employer would move my office in and out of Kirkwood). Meacham Park was bad news even during the early 1990s. I knew people who lived there, and hooligans from there would come into the restaurant where I worked and cause trouble. I'm sure it was a problem much longer than that, because the problems I knew in the '90s don't happen overnight.

And less than a mile away you've got spectacular Victorian houses where accomplished professionals live. If you have to ask the price of those houses, you can't afford it. Outside of Meacham Park, Kirkwood is very much an upper/upper-middle class, affluent suburb.

The mayor is the one in the hospital, either in serious or critical condition, although the early reports certainly did make it sound like the mayor was one of the deceased.

The city attorney is a real hero in this. He threw chairs at the attacker and knocked him down, which gave him and some others enough time to escape. Then soon after that the police were able to get in and kill the attacker.

Good morning !  All the shootings all over the country !!  We had ours too, yesterday guy killed 3 people in family then called 911.  SWAT came, 1 officer killed, another wound.  Burned the guy out, he died as well.

Glad the carpet issues worked out, that can be a real pain!!

FINALLY, got my power wiring done!  Next will be the switches.  Below a couple of pictures below the layout.

The white background behind the terminal strips, is a wire list identify where the wires go.  If you look close right in the center at the bottom of the middle AIU, is a wire hanging.  That wire comes from behind the panel and goes to the TMCC Command Control.  I unplugged it from the TIU on the right side, to accomodate access.  Well you guessed it, when I finished I forgot to plug that wire back in.  I had Drag Races going on when I powered up the layout.  The good news is, that was the ONLY wiring issue.  EVERYTHING worked great the first time, Unbelievable.

The next picture looks like a mess, but I have my control panel, and all my transformers mounted in a printer cart.  (Which is really working well, with the pullout drawers, and can pull the whole thing out from under the layout.  These cables are umbilical cables to accomodate movement.  The reason there are so many is that also included on the cart is a VCR, Xbox, Xfmrs for the elevated G scale.  The yellow is a power cable that goes to 2 emergency shut off switches, one at each end of the layout.

Hope we ALL have a safe, and quiet weekend.  Today should be a great day, suppose to get to 75.

Later

Don--
I had to laugh at your good day comment--going to 75 :) We too will have a good day here, might get to 32 and possibly some melting, it's all relative in the grand scheme. However, tomorrow night our low is to be -7 with wind which is pretty crummy, again. Really makes us look forward to spring and summer.

Your wiring looks good, thanks for taking the time to post the pics. Nice neat work.

Monring all!

Sunny and should hit 60 today! High 60's predicted through the weekend!

Jim F, Don, and Dave - Just terrible about all these shootings in your areas. Prayers to the victims and their families.

Don - nice job on the wiring! You need to invite your neighbors over so they can see what you have accomplished with their wire!

Poor Buckeye - he can't make it to York so he can see the Chief arrive in his JATO mule wagon.

Doug M - that dog doesn't look to happy - did you disturb him? Don't you know to let sleeping dogs lie?

Have a great day all!

Regards, Roy

Thanks for the update, Dave.  The story is different every time I hear it at least in some details.  Grady Woods was my boss when I was about 13 (Carter was president) and I worked for the Commerce Bank of Kirkwood.  It was my job to mow the little bits of lawn, polish the metal on the drive throughs, and also to mow and clean up an empty lot across the street, where an old school was knocked down.  They later built a new bank on the empty lot and the old one was torn down and replaced with a new building.  This is just a few blocks up from one of my favorite hobby stores around here, the Hobby Station.  Grady was an old man back then and Meechum (Meacham?) had been a middle class neighborhood in keeping with the area around it, although the population was generally Blacks versus the whites around there.  Well, they moved in on Grady and told him to sell them a bunch of his property or they would use imminent domain and he would get pennies on the dollar.  He sold and they put in the public housing.  Shortly after they moved people in there, the first murders began and it has been all bad since then.  I guess the government could only see Black people and not that they were destroying an old and established neighborhood by moving in criminals.  That's what happens when you judge people by skin color alone, even in the name of "progress".  Grady was one of the nicest guys I ever worked for in my life.  I think I was making like $1.25 an hour back then, and then Carter increased the minimum wage to like $1.60?  It seemed like a lot to me!  If you know the area still, then this is right by that big old church off Kirkwood Rd/Lindbergh.  Sounds like we had some of the same old stomping grounds, just separated by a few years!

Gonna run up to the store and grab some catalogs and pick up some drive-thru food, so TTFN.

JATO MULE WAGON - That's a good one!

Chewy and Rudy are pen pals!  Rudy is sad, because they have a no-furniture rule.  I suspect Rudy gets some peanut butter now and again!?

PPPS - Very nice work, Don!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

I have a chev 02 diesel with 2 batteries and the same thing was happen to me if I did not start it for 2 days it would not start and I had to charge the batteries to get it to start it turned out that one of the batteries was bad so I replaced them both (5 years old) and that fixed it. That's not saying that is what is wrong with yours. But just a thought. Gary

For batteries, not bad ones, go to a battery speciality store [here, we have Batteries Plus] and get a Battery Maintainer.  It is aplastic block that plugs into an outlet or dropcord.  It has a long lead that is polarized.  It comes with a short pigtail for hard wiring to your battery posts [ring terminals] and a spare with clips.  It actually does the same thing as our high $$$ battery chargers [goes through three stages, charge, desulfation and maintenance float].  The biggest difference is it is not a high amp charger [about .75].  Will keep batteries fully charged without trickle charging [which damages batteries].  This will hold them at about 13.5 V and that is safe to maintain batteries for over a year at the time without using the battery.  Thye run about $39.  I saw them on sale at Cabela's for $29.

Been using them on riding mower, farm tractor and other battery cranked equipment.  Great for show cars, motorcycles, jet skis and snowmoblies.  All that is attched to the battery is the short pigtail.

Hi all, The undersea cable and Sat links are still up and runningWink [;)]. I have been rather busy with work of late.

Sorry to hear about all these shootings. Several of these sort of incidents led to hand guns and assault rifles/machine guns being banned here. Not sure if this has been a good or bad thing. The bad guys always seem to be able to get hold of a shooter.

Haven't got much done on the layout as such but I just finished wiring the surround system in the gamesroom. And the TV guys have put in a feed from a satellite box in the house.

I used 60 Meters of speaker cable! The surround amp and DVD live on a shelf under the layout. Cable runs under the layout and out through the wall to the garage then conduit run up to the loft and back into the gamesroom loft space and drops through the ceiling in each corner to a wall mounted speaker. SVideo cable follows a similar path.

Need to save up for a ceiling bracket and powered screen for our ebay bargain projector.

Hope everyone is ok, stay safe

Nick

Doug, here is the dropdown.  I cut the tabs off of the Realtrax and bent back the connectors.  Wires under the dropdown connect to the tack section on the dropdown [I did jumpers to the common on both sides of the track section and one variable [I still call it +] to the center rail.  This arrangement is temporary but works great.  Have not had time to find the trasnom latches that you will see in the OGR Backshop video.  When I do, will probably use them.  The 2X4 on piano hinge works great.  The plywood section assures that the top section locks in place at the same height each time.  The deadbolt type latch just holds the 2X4 in place when dropdown is down.  Piano hinge on drop section is commercial grade.  I tried cutting the track sections and they were not smooth and in the curves this caused problems with some light cars.  That is why I used dropdown instead of a liftup on power cylinders.  This works great and is easy.  My make a bridge there on top of the dropdown.

Dropdown up

Views with dropdown down.

Doug, hope this helps answer your questions.

Boy do I have a problem !  My wife's birthday is next month, and apparently she is begining to feel old.  She has decided that I need to start coloring MY  hair!!  Now I have been gray for at least 8 years, and all of a sudden I need to do something?  All in the past week or so.  The only other thing I can think of is she was at our train club a couple of weeks ago, and then down at Doug dagumps last week.  And the comments have been, "Gee, I didn't realize that a lot of those guys were so old, you need to start coloring your hair so you don't look like them."  At first I just passed it off, but its becoming somewhat of a morning topic.   "A little tint wouldn't be bad",  "All you would need to do is have a little on  the sides done",  "You wouldn't need it real dark",         HMMMMMm

Well, Don, since you asked................ Your wife should be thankful that you HAVE hair. I have a full head of hair. A little gray on the sides. Now, you may want to get a color washed in and then you might want to have high light streaks put in. That would look good. You must really be looking very old. OR you could just put a bag over your head. OR, don't go anywhere with the wife. OR you could just put some motor oil on it. BUT, you really should do something. HEY, tell your wife that she looks older than you.

Good Luck, Don  ( old guy ).

Evening guys

On night shift again.

Thanks for all the prayers for the Notre Dame community.  The teachers who was injured is awake and alert and expected to make a full recovery.  Please continue keeping her in your prayers.

Thanks for the tips on the truck repair front.  I've removed both batteries and had them tested individually and they are within spec.  The motor is a 6.5 liter ground up diesel, not the 5.7 gas convert to diesel from the mid 80's.  I love the truck so that is why I want to get it fixed beyond the aggravation factor.

Chief- I may get one of those battery maintainers, it sounds like a good idea even after I fix the problem.  Thanks for the tip.  Is this what you were talking about Image of Battery Tender JR.

Don- Bet it feels good to get the wiring done!  When I made my control panel, it is on a ~ 3 foot tether of wires.  To neaten things up I took some of the plastic wire wrap coil stuff,  and it made things look nice.  BTW, don't forget to fix the lamp in the living room.

I had to laugh about your wife asking you to dye your hair.  You could always say that the older you look the younger she looks.

May God bless

Jim

There's an old addage: "A sweater is something you have to put on when your grandmother gets cold."

I guess the hair color thing is about the same!

I'll bet if you tell your wife she looks older than you, you'll never need to worry about her bugging you about your hair again...ever.

Don - Don't feel bad. I'm 37 and Susan has been telling me for a few months that I'm starting to grey and should consider dying my hair!  Yeah... right. My grandfather died at 72 with a predominantly black head of hair. I really don't think I have much to worry about... next time she says something tell her, 'Really? I didn't notice that I had hair.' Or you could do what Fife does and shave your head... I had to do that when I was in the service and I looked kind of funny... no I don't have any pictures...

Evening All

Lake Ste Claire has all those fish and more..Lake Erie too. Hire a pro and they will find them. You would not have to travel as far but a lot of Ste Claire is Canadian water but Meijer sells the license. at least they use too.

Kurt bring Coco we might as well have a party.Gratiot Valley is March 2, 10/4pm.

Its 33 degrees and 2 more inches of snow predicted by morning. Can't think now that we are talking fishing. I could take them but all I usually get is too much sun. They need someone that knows where to find the fish. I'm not making any progress here so TTFN, Sir James

Fife, John F., Roy, & Chuck your comments don't count for obvious reasons.

Evening all. Chief, thanks for the photos - now I get how it works. Don, funny you mention it, just this morning, one of our professors walked past my office door, stopped, backed up and stuck her head in and said: I never noticed how your hair is turning grey, and walked on. What is it that the Chief is using? Hmmm, come to think of it, my avatar photo is getting a tad old...

Went out for pizza tonight with the bride, now just reading the paper - it's depressing; sleet on its way to you, Kurt and points east. Wink [;)] I'm taking Rudy over to Sir James for Banilla and root beer, hope Chewey is there to play.

Buckeye, come visit the real Crystal Lake...I'm sure there's something alive in it you can catch.

Hey, 38 down in today's Chicago Tribune crossword - 9 letters, Lionel Products..... t-r-a-i-n-s-e-t-s. Cool!

Good one Laz!

Doug, on the way - no word from Sir J in a while?  Chewy is chomping at that bit to get some icecream.  I hear Kurt is coming and bringing a friend as well?

Don - I've been graying for about 10 years.  Also balding on top - all that testosterone will do that to a guy.  Wife likes me with a beard and gray hair, since then she feels that she looks younger - even though she is really really old -- 18 months older Wink [;)]  Good luck!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
