Afternoon all. Been real busy at work. I finally have some time for the trains before work tonight. Sure glad I replaced my sump pump. The new one (3/4 hp.) has been running every 5 min for 1 min. The footer drains have an unbeleivable amount of water exiting them into the sump. My center drain ( when I replaced my sanitary drain out to the road i ran a piece of 2" perforated pipe next to it threw the middle of the basement) is like a gagden hose running wide open.

Wes-  My sump is ran to the to the street same as yours. I dont have storm water connection at the street for the house. I have 2 back ups for my sump drain the first one was approved by the building inspector. (1) Just before the pipe goes threw the curb I have a plus shaped fitting. The drain passes through it to dump the water on the street,  the other 2 ends are verticle, the top has a cap for a clean out, the bottom extends down to the footer drain ( in to the pea gravel above it)for the street. This allows the water to compleatly drain out of the pipe into the footer drain if the exit to the street freezes up.  (2) I can divert it into the sanitary if by chance it woild ever totally freez up. I have never had to do this since I made the changes.

EVENING

Warm temp sure does sound nice, won't have that here for a long time. Snow started just as the rush hour began cars and snow have all the main roads clogged up. A lot of late suppers in the Detroit area tonite. Church service and Awanas cancelled along with lots of others. I ran the new boxcab again today, still not impressed with its performance. It runs but I think I have been spoiled by all the better engines.

I'm supprised that you guys are allowed to run sumps to the storm drains, around here thats a no-no. we have to pump into our yards and that includes the drain tiles around the foundation.

LATER ALL,,,,,,,Sir James

Over the last couple of days someone had mentioned, either on this or the other forum, a source for K-Line parts, or possibly repairs.  I hadn't anything but a passing interest when I read it but I had someone ask about parts for a camera car.  Searches haven't found the message, anyone have any info.?

Sir James- The inspector only approved the line going to the street. Around here we have two sewer lines out under the street (storm, sanitary) the house storm(gutters, footers, and draintile) and the street drains are all tied together. All new construction has tieins to both, my house is 104 years old and was never tied into the storm. All new construction has the footer and gutters go into the storm tiein. I added the line to the sanitary after he left, just incase it decided to freeze up one day. It froze up all the time before I made the changes out at the street. All I have to do is open and clothes 2 ball valves. This is for an emergency only. I have never had to dump into the sanitary. (yet)

Stormwater....What you do with it depends on the type of soil in the vicinity.  If we took our storm water and poured it on the ground, we would have another lake.   When I lived in South Bend, you could dump a tanker truck of water on your front lawn and due to the sand, it would be absorbed in short order.

Morning Folks,

I made a fresh pot.  The rain volume here was just tremendous last night.  I was reclinerizing and it woke me from a dead sleep.  Sounded like a freight train passing.  We didn't lose power.  Terrible shame about all the death and destruction from the tornadoes.

The Mrs. is officially feeling better.  How do I know you ask?  When she starts making a Honey-Do list I know she is better.  Came home last night to a list of about 4 things that needed to be done.  Glad she is better and my nursing duties are complete Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg].

Don Baker - You asked about "normalcy". I suppose for me things will get more normal work-wise after the interview process is finished. Hopefully we will finish by the end of this month. These 12 and 14 hour days are getting to me.   I come home and all I want to do is reclinerize.  After February/March, things should slow down until June/July when we start taking deliveries of furniture, equipment, and instructional materials. Then August will be real crazy until the kids actually come to school and then I should be able to breathe for a little bit.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cold and windy 30 degrees. A few snow flurries today. Going up to only 36 today. A lot of water on the ground. No flooding.

Today, I am taking it easy. Have a few chores to do around the house and then, I will spend some time running trains. Not much else new here. Looking forward to Spring.

Dining car is here and it's breakfast time. later.

Y'all have a great Thursday.

Mornin' Fellas.

I was doing SOOOOOO good last night installing the ceiling tiles and was only 2 strips from being done, when Susieq called and asked if I would patch the ceiling in the kitchen. Love my sweetie so I had to stop and get that done for her. Big Smile [:D] Dead [xx(]

So tonight I should finally finish installing ceiling tiles! Thumbs Up [tup] So tomorrow I'll have to stop and get the rest of the carpet padding, guess I'll stop tonight and get another roll of foam roadbed and pickup the new catalogs. Then this weekend I'll pretty much be working on wiring! Maybe I'll get the control panel started as well, can't really go too far with it as I have to get those rotary switches Bob Nelson posted about.

Not much more happening...

Laz - Sounds like a neat feature... Legacy sure sounds sweet... I'm hoping Susieq gets me the Lionel Chessie GP-30 w/Legacy for my B-Day. If she does Legacy Command Set will be on my X-Mas list. Smile [:)]Cool [8D]

Where have Collin and Grayson gotten off to? Haven't heard much from Nick in England or John B either for that matter... someone sever the underwater INet cable to England?

My house was built in 2000.  There are two PVC runs through the curb,  and then down the street into the storm drain.  It's amazing how much water crosses in front of my neighbor's driveways on the way down to the storm drain.  My water actually blasts out of the pipe into the street.  I like your idea of the + at the curb.  I will emplement that one for sure.

This was my first new build, and I didn't really take yard grade into consideration.  Like many new builds, they just take a big field, chop it up into .25 acre lots, attempt to move some dirt around to move some of the rain water in between the houses, and let the swimming pools, I mean basement's sump pump system do the rest.  Before finishing my basement, I just had the issued 1/3" HP sump pump plugged into house power.  Power went out twice over a couple of years and I had 3" of water in my basement within 15 minutes.  Before finishing the basement, I kind of went overboard with my sump pump backup.  Initially, I took 6 car batteries and powered a 4000 watt inverter for the biggest sump pump I could find.  My primary pump is a 7000 GPH 3/4 HP flowtec.  Then, I came accross a pair of 3KVA UPS that do a much better job of providing power, and also have the ability to tell me when the power is out by email.  Much smaller footprint too.  Now I run two big pumps (the 3/4 and a decent 1/2 HP) in piggyback fashion.  I can clear the sump pit out in 3 seconds.  On really bad storms, it still cycles ever 25 seconds.  I sleep better now.

The difference is night and day between my two pumps.  That 1/2 HP runs for 30 second cycle times if I make it the primary.  It just doesn't move as much water.  That 3/4 of mine is a cannon.  It's also smaller.  I just found a link.

I love to talk sump pump talk.  Email me if you want to gap for a while.

Good morning all,

It is cloudy and cold in SE Indiana with temps in the 20s and 30s.  I guess we had a bunch of straight line wind do some major damage in my home county Tuesday night.  Nobody hurt, but a lot of wind damage.  Last night was busy, but I did not accomplish anything.  Went to Ash Wednesday services, got some supper, went to the funeral home and packed up the trains off the back porch.  All this talk of sump pumps makes me glad I just have a crawl space that only occasionally gets wet.  I have a litte 1/3 HP pump that I toss in the water if and when any water appears.  I had a little more than the usual fare on the dining car this morning.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

GOOD MORNING ALL

Well I just had my workout for today. It rained most of yesterday till rush hour, then it dumped about 4/5 inches of snow by 8pm. I cleared the driveway and walk but left my p/u for this morning. BIG mistake: under the snow I found an iceburg. Doors froze shut used a little warm water and got them open, cleared the snow and wiped off the water before closing it up. I think this could be a  train day once I recoup.......Sir James

Yea, I was super excited about it when they called me about the piece.  Not as cool as doing a spread in CTT, but man, it felt pretty cool to see my name in there.

Morning. Lots of snow to remove in the past 24 hrs. here. Barely made it out of train station lot last eve. And then the driveway was a foot deep and frozen. Ah well. My back hurts. Broke my favorite shovel too. Rats. Hope to start the tax paperwork over the next few days. Sigh.

Wes - Congradulations !!  That's really great.  Another Ambassador

Had a GREAT meeting at our train club last night.  I gave a presentation on setting up a Kids club, (modeling after the one Doug dagrump is in at San Diego).  Really went well.  By the end of the meeting we had appointed a Chairperson,  secured a volunteer sign up sheet, resolved facility and equipment questions, have people developing flyers, securing materials.  AND, surprised that the western regional sales manager was at the meeting.  (From one of the big 2 mfgr's) and he guaranteed a donation of 2 or 3 RTR train sets!!  So really good meeting!!!

I'm happy & excited!!

Hey Doug - look - we have someone to commiserate with! Rich - welcome to the mid-teen parents club - where drama prevails! We have the law of conservation of drama - drama never dissappears - it just changes form!

Don - glad the Kid's Club is getting off the ground there!

Doug M - it looks bad there. I have a Chicago work acquaintance that has been stuck in Vegas trying to get home for the last 2 days (is there a better place to be stuck?).

Congrats Wes!

Sunny here - headed to 60! Maybe 70 by the weekend.

Have a great day all!

After working on the layout and really thinking things through, I decided to redo the second level...

What we have now is the ability to run 3 trains on the second level. There are 2 switches under the Atlas 2 track Pratt Truss bridge, the first is the switch up from the 1st level and into the passenger station. The second switch is the second level or 1st level transition switch. The blue track is at 7" above the 1st level, and has a reverse loop to send trains back so they can be diverted down to the second level. The black track is grade from 7" to 14" and the 14" 'third' level.

This is what it looked like before:

I like the full lenght wider valley. Before I would have either had a double decker bridge along the bottom, or a long tunnel for the 1st level.  Now you will see the trains on the 1st level for a short distance between the mountains.  I think this will simplify the scenery and make it more realistic as well.

Thanks Sir James and Doug!  Nice to sleep in my own bed again.  Got home about 11PM (Midnight on Orlando time).  Cost about $190 to get out of the parking lot, glad I'm not paying for it!  On the plus side, I got a great deal on the cab from the hotel to the airport, so saved a little there.  I had 138 new emails to download, then the ones I didn't read from last week since I couldn't reply back out.  Took a few hours to read them all.  I forwarded a few, but most seem to have already made the rounds once or twice?

Wes, congrats!

Glad your wife is doing better, Mitch - better get to work!

I'm only half-way through my laundry from the trip and still want to run trains before I have to pick up daughter from school (son is home sick), so I'll be back online later - ttfn!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
