# 31-32 St. Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt) #MW95589 Wedge Snowplow. Built by Baldwin in 1913. Originally a Vanderbilt tender to Rock Island 2-8-2 #2572; rebuilt in mid-1920s to "loaf of bread" water tank design; converted to plow in 1957; conveyed to St. Louis Southwestern when Rock Island was broken up and its lines were sold. <from: literature purchased at the StL Museum of Transportation - Kirkwood, MO>

Ahoy Cap'n Tom ‘n fellow travelers at the bar!!

Bossman, set ‘em up if you will ‘n Boris ring Da Bell - a round on Da ManagAH! This is gonna be a GOOD DAY! <grin> "You know who" is coming to visit! Say no more - wink, wink, nudge, nudge! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

A couple of observations of my own today. Can't figure out what in the world is so difficult in providing a name for the new safe in this latest "contest." Good Grief Charlie Brown - youse guyz are making it out to be more than it should. What happened to the fun ‘round here???? <addressed to our regulars, as the others may or may not take the time to look at my woIds.>

Totally amazed by Skipper Fergie's unwillingness or whatever it is to join in FULLY with the rest of us. We're a small group. We interact ‘n we'd love to have you as "one of ours." But I think Cap'n Tom has it right - he's a coffee shopper ‘n I guess we'll just have to be satisfied with that.

Liked the Newfie pix . . . Thumbs Up [tup]

I saw the posts from Pete - Eric - Dan - Allan ‘n Shane! Glad you're all still with us! Thumbs Up [tup]

I wudda jumped in on Shane's quiz - but I'm a day late 'n a dollar short! I got one of 'em correct right off the top of my head - but wudda looked the other up. <admitting it> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Best to Eric tomorrow (I too thought it was today) - and whatever in the world is going on <again> with our Bar Chandler Pete  <always finds a way to wrangle ‘n wriggle outta work!> - best to you too <I think>! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Lookling at the latest revision to the B'day Watch List brings to mind that we haven't heard from MoPac Chris lately. WondAH if he'll be the fastest to get accepted by our crew then disappear into the bits 'n bytes of cyber space, nevAH to grace our little bar again Question [?] Hope not - but just in case I can't make it back AND the unlikely chance you are looking at these woIds - Happy B-Day [bday] in advance! Thumbs Up [tup]

As mentioned ovAH ‘n ovAH - I'm really pressed for time . . . soooooooooooooo

It's time for some more covAHs from the Larsman Mobile!  (thanks to all who've mentioned them - appreciate the recognition of ‘em being posted!)

Happy B-Day [bday] 2008 BIRTHDAY WATCH LIST Happy B-Day [bday]

<rev. Jan 24th>

ACTIVE Customers at "Our" Place

January 14th (Eric - 65)

OKRA (Dec 22 - Jan 20) Are tough on the outside but tender on the inside. Okras have tremendous influence. An older Okra can look back over his life and see the seeds of his influence everywhere. You can do something good each day if you try. You go well with most anyone.

January 23rd (Jan - 39)

January 26th (Chris - 40)  - Next up Happy B-Day [bday]

CHITLIN (Jan 21 - Feb 19) Chitlins come from humble backgrounds. A Chitlin, however, will make something of himself if he is motivated and has lots of season-ing. In dealing with Chitlins, be careful they may surprise you. They can erupt like Vesuvius. Chitlins are best with a Moon Pie but Catfish or Okra is O.K. too.

March 31st (Lars - 68)

MOON PIE (March 21 - April 20) You're the type that spends a lot of time on the front porch. A cinch to recognize the physical appearance of Moon Pies.  Big and round are the key words here. You should marry anybody who you can get remotely interested in the idea. A Chitlin would be a good mate but it's not going to be easy. You always have a big smile and are happy. This might be the year to think about aerobics. Maybe not.

May 18th (Tom - 70)

POSSUM (April 21 - May 21) When confronted with life's difficulties, possums have a marked tendency to withdraw and develop a don't-bother-me-about- it attitude. Sometimes you become so withdrawn, people actually think you're dead. This strategy is probably not psychologically healthy but seems to work for you. You are a rare breed. Most folks love to watch you work and play. You are a night person and mind your own business. You should definitely marry an Armadillo.

August 11th (Pete - 57)

August 14th (Allan -  73)

CATFISH (July 24 - Aug 23) Catfish are traditionalists in matters of the heart, although one's whiskers may cause problems for loved ones. You Catfish are never easy people to understand. You run fast. You work and play hard.  Even though you prefer the muddy bottoms to the clear surface of life, you are liked by most. Above all else, Catfish should stay away from Moon Pies.

September 8th  (Rob - 37)

GRITS (Aug 24 - Sept 23) Your highest aim is to be with others like yourself. You like to huddle together with a big crowd of other Grits. You love to travel though, so maybe you should think about joining a club. Where do you like to go? Anywhere they have cheese, gravy, bacon, butter, or eggs and a good time. If you can go somewhere where they have all these things, that serves you well. You are pure in heart.

October 9th (Ron - 74)

BOILED PEANUTS (Sept 24 - Oct 23) You have a passionate desire to help your fellow man. Unfortunately, those who know you best, your friends and loved ones, may find that your personality is much too salty, and their criticism will affect you deeply because you are really much softer than you appear. You should go right ahead and marry anybody you want to because in a certain way, yours is a charmed

G'day Gents!

Just a quickie set of ACKNOWLEDGMENTS this AM while I'm still logged on . . .

Thursday - Jan 24th

Page 173 - CM3 Shane (coalminer3) at 8:09 AM: Surely you jest, Sir - $2.09 for petrol???? Are you SURE that you aren't overdoing the "fumes sniffing" Question [?] <uh oh>

Good to see - no matter what the "state of mind" - lotsa snow in them thar hills, eh Question [?] <envy>

I'll mark my quiz paper as 100% thank you very much- extra credit not needed! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

So what's the reluctance about throwing out a name for our "Name the Safe Contest?" Surely figured you'd come up with a sure-fire winner! <geesh>

Must admit to not being much of a "rail fan" in my younger days. In fact still don't consider myself in that category. "Observant" is perhaps the better descriptor! <grin> So while in Boston and New England (8 years of residency) I observed all sorts of MoSheens on tracks, but couldn't tell ya much about many of ‘em. Oh yeah, when it came to my FAVORITES - PRR - NYC - NH - B&M - well, that's a different story. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Many thanx for the visit, quarters, chat ‘n ROUND! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 173 - Dan (DL-UK) at 9:06 AM: I think we're "into" one of those language difficulties again. Redundant stock Question [?] All of the models you see in my HO train display cases are different - there's not a duplicate in the inventory, not one. Hmmmmmm. They all represent locomotives ‘n rolling stock used on previous layouts with the EXCEPTION of the stock in the Canadian display case. Those were purchased simply out of love for the liveries ‘n types of equipment. Just no room to run on my Can-Am Railroad. Anyway, the Can-Am is a "period road" representing locos ‘n the like between 1990 and present times. At least I try to make it so . . .

Methinks we'll have to get Pete to interpret . . . <uh oh>

JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING: Perhaps you have failed to note that the display case fotos are in 2 sections . . . hmmmmm, is THAT what you might mean is redundant??? Through no fault of yours, those Pix are NOT new to these Pages <and the old bar> - but you weren't able to view 'em back then, so you wouldn't know. Hmmmmm.

The "call" went out for HELP for Thursday (today) ‘n Friday in view of the pending absences of Pete ‘n Eric. I'm here - in fact I'm tending bar! Check out the BOTTOM of the daily summary for this fine day. BUT glad you gave it a "go" - every Post helps to keep this place in forward momentum! Yeah!! [yeah] Next refill is on me, Mate! Thumbs Up [tup]

CHEERS to ya! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Later! Thumbs Up [tup]

Hello all in

Was it today Tom was not going to be about (does not look like - I see a recent post!)- looks like the things are under control. I'll have a pancake breakfast please!

Yep Jan - I think in 1966 my grandparents didn't have much choice when it came to going from Chicago to Southampton - but you got the style included in the fare - which does not happen now. I have some memorabilia from the voyage too. Mind you they were keen to travel on the Cunarders - my grandfather had travelled up to the Clyde to see the Queen Mary on the stock when it was under construction, making the journey from Surrey to Clydeside on his motorcycle as a young man for the purpose. Quite an adventure in those days (but then if you seen action in World War One as he did I don't suppose it was that much of an adventure to him!). Mind you air must have been a feasible alternative as my parents had moved to Chicago in 1963 and flew (in a Stratocruiser I believe).

Further interesting comments of note from CM3 on the Century, and Lars has weighed in with comment and covers.

Tom - why so much redundant stock in your wall mounted yards? - good to see it has not gone to the scrap man! Series of St Louis museum picks ahs been good to follow.

Pete - I have the books published by BR (ER) public relations office in 1975  commemorating the S&D event - picked them up remaindered (but new stock) in one of the sheds at the GCR behind the loco shed some years back for a reasonable price - they must list the stock so I'll try and look.

They used to have lots of that sort of stuff at Collectors Corner at Euston which I used to go to back in the 1980s - did you ever visit it? Must have been as source of much Railwayana at that time - I suppose the real tragedy was the material and bits and pieces that was trashed and hit the skip back in the 60s and 70s when modernisation was in full swing, and no one thought to sell it.

Allan - re Elizabethan film - what DVD system do you have in NZ? - the one we have in Europe or the North American one - I can highly recommend the BTF DVDs I recommended to Pete (now available on the US compatible system and Pete bought them) or if you have the UK system you can buy from the BFI in London no doubt mail order - or probably other on line places. You'd very much enjoy the B&W era films from the 1950s and the period before you left the UK I'm sure. They are full of character and very well made films too.

Rob / Eric - good to see you in. Eric glad you like the BTF link - this was the ‘in house' film unit of BR which was formed in 1948 on nationalisation and lasted until the early 1980s when Mrs Thatcher would have ‘persuaded' the railway to shed non core operations and I think it got closed down at that point - luckily the archive (or most of it) seemed to get sent to the BFI for preservation.

Cheerio

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house, and $ for the jukebox.  It's in the mid 20s this a.m., snowing (a little) with the real cold stuff supposed to arrive here overnight, hit us for s short time and then move out.  Gas is at $2.09/gal.

Lars was by with a nice set of rerun book covers.

DL stopped by as well - good to hear from you.

Pete - Whyte classification is the name you were looking for, I believe.

Fergie - Appreciated the Newfie shots.

Allan visited as well.

Eric - No quiz for the Conrail shot?  I have to recuse myself because I know right where you were.  BTW, it's one of the few parts of the line that is still double tracked.  Good luck tomorrow!

Rob - Good to hear from you, sir!  If we ever hit anything with one of the autos in your picture, we'd never feel it - incidentally, in my next life I hope to have a Packard Twin 6 Touring Car (lol).

OSP was by with a nice shot of a SEPTA PCC - one of the few lines that had cars with rider windows.  You probably remember them from your time in Boston.  MP RS3 is a nice looking piece as well.

Thanks to all who participated in the quiz.  Herewith the answers:

Builders of NYC 4-8-2s were: ALCO (extra points if you said Schenectady), and Lima.  There was a long gap in the Lima built Ls.  They constructed the L1c and L1d classes in 1918.  The next batch was the L4a class in 1942 and 1943 and the L4b class in 1943.

NC&StL called their 4-8-4s "Stripes," and "Yellow jackets."  The names were tied to the paint schemes.  One of them is preserved (sort of) in Centennial Park in Nashville, not far from where the N&C shops were located.

Work safe

Oooh - just looked out the window across the hall - it is POURING down the snow!

G'day Gents!

Another cold start here in mid-continent USA where "they" say it's 8 (F) - should begin to rise back to "normal" winter temps. Petrol is $2.68 (rounded) up at "Collusion Corner," where we haven't seen those prices in some time.

The pastries have been freshly stacked into The Mentor Village Bakery case, our coffee has been freshly ground ‘n brewed and the Menu Board has those fine selections for <light> ‘n <traditional> breakfasts. So what's the delay Question [?]

Comments from the Proprietor:

Name the Safe Contest UNDERWAY!

(1) from Lars (LoveDomes) . . . Nessie the Lock Master!

(2) from Rob (trolleyboy) . . . . . Green MoSheen!

Very disappointing participation! <thus far>

Contest CLOSES on Monday, 28 Jan . . .

Customer Acknowledgments (since my last narrative):

Wednesday - Jan 23rd:

Page 173 - CM3 Shane (coalminer3) at 9:45 AM: Yeah, many of those HO modelers really took liberties with the realities of the times. Athearn especially was "good at it." But as you mentioned, it was all part of the fun . . . I enjoyed my Pennsy tuscan corrugated side "shorty" passenger cars - even it they never existed in prototype. Same for those great looking EMD E8As in New Haven livery, etc. And there's soooooo much more, such as the RDCs that were rather "imperfect," but the bottom line is <and was> I enjoyed it all! Thumbs Up [tup] That "rubberband drive' was awful! Thumbs Down [tdn]

which manufacturers built 4-8-2s for the Central?

Answer: Alco ‘n Lima.

what were the NC&StLs nicknames for their 4-8-4s?

Answer: Yellow Jackets

Six more terrific covers from the "mobile"! Really like that Southern "Pacific" loco cover - Western Pacific is always a <keeper> too! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Appreciate your "cheer leading" at the bar - but ya know, there are just those who will not respond. So be it! Play to the guys who give a Rat's Patoot. Yeah!! [yeah]

Page 173 - Dan (DL-UK) at 11:47 AM: Always a treat to have our Resident Sherwood Forest UK Connection on board! Thumbs Up [tup]

Regarding the "Chunnel Chuggers," I'd say that the next time I make the trip, I'll check out those "baggage/other" cars very closely - HOWEVER - I'm not planning to board ‘em in the near or distant future. Thumbs Down [tdn] It will be interesting to follow this latest saga that the highest court in Canada has directed to VIA Rail. Those cars may very well be sitting on sidings if funding cannot be identified for the retrofit to accommodate the handicapped <and the beat goes on . . . .>

Good evening Leon , I think a very large double splash  coffee tonight , it's a cold one again Sigh [sigh] Bit of a light day but still a good day with bits 'n' bobs from everyone Thumbs Up [tup]

Tom-Great pictures again sir , some interesting traction mixed in as well. They have done some nice cosmetic work on a lot of their equipment, which says volumes about the qualities and commitment not to mention the skills of their labour force.

Nice to know you dodged the HQ bullet , mind you I'm sure you would have set them all right Thumbs Up [tup]

Lars-Some great books from the mobile , noticed that you slipped another trolley one in foir some reason as well. don't sweat the next couple of days we shall make it through Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete-Yes it would be nice if the Niagara region got a museum. They are looking at buildings with a couple things #1 they have some rail access as they own several large equipment type pieces,#2 a building with a good deal of internal space with proper climate control etc for their artifacts. They've been working on it for at least ten years now, I'm sure that they will find a spot eventually.

Allan-Glad that you liked the , pictures, Detroit had a couple interesting paint schemes but I'll be going with a Toronto TTC scheme. I have the decals I just need to mix my paint, the TTC red is unique.

CM3/Shane-They are quite the nice looking cars in those photo's aren't they. Too bad they don't make them like that anymore.I'll take a stab at your quizz and say that Baldwin and Alco would have been the builders.

Jan-Hope the old Happy B-Day [bday] celebrations went well, and that no small animals or people were hurt during the celebrations.<uh oh >

Fergie-Good to see you back on terra Firma at least for now , nice shots of the bullet as well. Thumbs Up [tup]

Hi Tom and all,

Hi Leon the usual round of Tui`s for all the crew please!Yeah!! [yeah]

Jan. Wishing you a veryHappy B-Day [bday]Happy B-Day [bday]Happy B-Day [bday], have a good ONE.Smile [:)] and many, many more as well!Yeah!! [yeah] Enjoyed those RR Heralds and the pics of the observation cars and the UP streamliner, thanks for the nice toast.Wow!! [wow]Thumbs Up [tup]

Pete. Many thanks for your Darlington anniversary visit account, i`ve sure missed a heck of a lot since leaving in 1969, what a great collection of loco`s that were there and to see the replicas running as well, I remember when Locomotion was displayed alongside the main platform at Darlington station and you were able to see it from the train passing through.Sigh [sigh] Thanks for pointing out that Elizabethan and Silver Fox video clip, it was great to watch!Bow [bow] Enjoyed all your pics and info on your posts, pass on my thanks to Alan for all his pics.Wow!! [wow] Nice words for Sir Ed you wrote.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Lars. Nice load of covAHS from the Larsman Mobile down on the Key`s.Yeah!! [yeah] Only wish that I could be able to meet you and all crew in person at the next get together, it would be a GREAT occasion to be involved in, we would most probably drink the bar DRY lubricating our vocal chords!Wink [;)] As Tom has quoted ANYTHING is POSSIBLE, so i`m keeping on hoping, you never know.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Mike. As Pete says that was the video clip site he mentioned, got to see the clips before they were removed, sorry to hear you found that winter 47 site a bit baffling, if you go down the menu on the left hand side and click on WWW links/photo`s you will find a heap of photo`s. Enjoyed all the URL`s for the Niagara Falls and the bridges, nice lot of posters too.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Rob. Thanks for all your trolley pics and info, the de Witt trolley`s look nice, is that the colour scheme you are using for your model?Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Ron. Nice to see you on board again, very interesting info on 1934 historic occasions, hope your back feeling a lot better now.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Fergie. After that trip to St John`s you deserve a good layover during the ships refit. Nice lot of snowy pics you posted.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Dan. Glad you enjoyed that Winter 1947 site, that was a more unusual use of a jet engine to clear the rail lines in those days, as Pete said it tended to buckle the lines a bit and set fire to the wooden sleepers at times. In those days film stock was very hard to get and rationing was still in force until 1951, and of course cameras were as rare as hens teeth as well! Many thanks for that link to the Darlington 1975 anniversary occasion that Pete wrote about, have put it on my favourites list.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Eric. My biggest food wish after the surgery was for a nice big plate of bacon, eggs, and fried tomato`s, and boy did they taste great when I eventually got them!Dinner [dinner]Wink [;)]

CM3. Nice to see you on board, always enjoy your informative write up`s.Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Tom. Nice re-post of Dan`s Nightstar and "Ocean" write up together with the pics, a must save!Bow [bow] Enjoyed all your posts and pics, a really nice collection of pics from your`s and Pete`s Kirkwood museum visit #4 and #5, and those classic model RR collection pics of yours in the display cases were great, you must have a heck of a lot of wall space in your Can Am train room?Wow!! [wow] How`s the snow situation at the moment?Wink [;)]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

See ya,  Allan

A pint of Harvey's please RUTH Thumbs Up [tup]if there is any left.Shock [:O]

Happy B-Day [bday]Happy B-Day [bday]Happy B-Day [bday]JANThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

MIKE Many thanks for the photos and the links to the Niagara Falls bridges they contain some wonderful old photos of the bridgeApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. That is a very good and interesting link about the bridge and the other bridges together with their buildersYeah!! [yeah]. Great idea to use a kite to get the first cable acrossApprove [^], but sobering about those bridges collapsingSad [:(].

ROB It would be great if they could build a railroad museum at NiagaraYeah!! [yeah] it would a great place to exhibit those O gauge models of the bridges.Thumbs Up [tup]

Glad you enjoyed the photosThumbs Up [tup], there seems to be some thing special about steam locomotives in the Scottish Highlands.Approve [^]

I would not like to guess what the cost of a nights stay at that hotel would beShock [:O].

JAN Glad you enjoyed the pics.Thumbs Up [tup]

I guess it is a bit hard to find books on American railroads where you areQuestion [?]. There is a Transport bookshop not far from Birmingham New Street station, which has a good selection of railway books from AmericaApprove [^], I always called in there if I had enough time while changing trains at Birmingham, I used to pickup Classic Trains magazine there.

Great toast.Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]

CM3 Thanks for the kind words on the photosThumbs Up [tup]. Yes the LNER had some wonderful names on their locomotivesApprove [^],the other names in the small class of K 4s were.

Loch Long

Cameron Of Lochiel

Lord Of The Isles

MacCailin Mor

Macleod Of Macleod

I think the last 4 were Highland Chieftains.

There was indeed a lot of skill required to get a long and heavy passenger train to stop exactly where the engineer wanted it toBow [bow], and a great deal of pride in doing so.Yeah!! [yeah]

Enjoyed reading your answer to Jan's question.Thumbs Up [tup]

Interesting on the locomotive names, the names referring to the wheel arrangement crossed the Atlantic and was the same in the UK, although apart from a couple of classes of 2-10-0s, we had no larger wheel arrangement (apart from articulated locos) than a small number of 2-8-2s known as Mikados.I am right in thinking it was a gentleman by the name of Wyght who came up with the wheel arrangement classifications ,eg 4-6-0, for steam locomotivesQuestion [?]

I will have to think on your quiz, but how about LIMA and ALCO for the buildersQuestion [?].

LARS Although BORIS is doing well giving the Mascots their treats,Thumbs Up [tup] he still misses you when you are not at the barSad [:(].

Thanks for those two great linksApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]; the photo albums in the first link are well worth a look and many a return visit to see them allYeah!! [yeah]. What a great Lionel model# 3590 isBow [bow], I did notice a Pennsy car in one photo.

Yes I have been fortunate to have seen the Can-Am a few times nowApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup], but every time I go I notice something I had not spotted before.Yeah!! [yeah]

Very true about us meeting through Our PlaceThumbs Up [tup], and it seemed we knew each other before we met in person, I had the same feeling with Eric and Doug.

Another great and varied selection from the Larsman MobileApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. Do you know if that Union Pacific Locomotive Directory is a new bookQuestion [?], I have an older version. Great painting of the ‘Mallets" coverApprove [^] and that Southern locomotive looks good in the night photoYeah!! [yeah]. Thanks for sharing.Thumbs Up [tup]

Still trying to come up with a name for the safe

Hello Tom and all in

Well, I'll enjoy that pint of Harvey's Pete has donated! Not sure I got the answer 100% correct as I'd missed the 2-1 non powered axles part. I agree Pete, I think the French used this system.

Incidentally I've just been checking out info regarding the French national railway museum at Mulhouse for some friends of mine planning their holiday - UK to Sicily by rail all the way (overnight Paris to Rome then onwards along the Italian coast, then back via ship to Naples, train to Milan, then rail through Swiss alps, Basel, Strasbourg and then the new TGV line to Paris Est. London - Paris on the new high speed rail link of course. A great journey plan I thought!

Tom - I think we might both be correct on the Vinyled Ren car - I'm sure you are correct about that one being baggage car, I think the Transition Car was also done in the same way - but I may be wrong. Yes, I could see all the pictures and have been able to do so for some time fortunately. All the better for it.

Pete - the S&D BTF film is titled Rail 150 (1975)
13 minutes - Colour

Highlights of the Grand Steam Cavalcade held at Shildon, on the Stockton & Darlington line, on 31st August 1975, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the world's first public passenger steam railway.

According to the http://www.britishtransportfilms.co.uk/ website. It is a short. The APT there was, I think, the Gas Turbine one given the date, unless I'm imagining this - after all I was not there - but you were!

I did not check the Elizabethan link, but I do have the BTF film on video - presume it was the same, or an extract?

I liked those Fort William run steam pics. It is great to know that service is an annual regular. I must get up there some time and try it.

Mike - nice posters and interesting links - some very vintage pics from the Niagara area - great post!

I see there have been a few more posts since I prepared this, but I'll turn to them later!

Best wishes

DL

What's going on with this HOT CHOCOLATE 'n ROOT BEER at Da BAH Question [?] Can't have THAT - we're not a Censored [censored] soda shop, coffee joint or one of those othAH such joints - we're a man's bAH! <geesh>

For Cap'n Tom: As is ALWAYS the case, you just keep this place <humming> along with all kinds of good stuff for Da Boyz! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Really enjoyed those old time RR mag covAHs! Really special! The museum pix are terrific ‘n especially made interesting because you've included those descriptions! Wow!! [wow]

Simply loved the Mohawk - great locomotive ‘n very nice pix. Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] The "Central" Mohawks are discussed quite well in this link:

Your Can-Am trainroom ‘n layout must be one heckuva place to check out. I envy Pete, Eric ‘n Doug for having had the chance to see it all. Pete should be a "gold card" membAH by now, huh Question [?] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] There were some absolutely great pix provided right aftAH the rendezvous II - May-June I think. Thought those two shots of Juneau ‘n Wolfman were terrific reminders of what good friends you two have become - and ALL BECAUSE of this joint. A real shame that so many just don't get it, huh Question [?] But WE DO! I bettAH tone it down, otherwise this submission may wind up being "deleted," for "too much exuberance" or something like that. <grin>

Your emails (and those from Da Boyz) have been ‘n are being received. I'll put together something once "all" are "in."

I'm going directly to the Larsman Mobile, then as has been the case, I've really got to cut this short. So sorry - but I didn't want to miss adding my congratulations to Jan, plus I've been a bit overdue in participating.

I WILL do my best to provide something during the daytime hours either tomorrow or Friday - it may be out of the question to do both. I'll try.  Thumbs Up [tup]

A special "hello" to Shane - Pete - Rob - Mike - Ron - ‘n Dan; I saw your submissions, just haven't the time to make specific commentaries. Then again, that happens to the best of us, huh Question [?]

SO HOW COME SOME of YOUSE GUYZ AREN'T  "in" the CONTEST!?!?!?!? <geesh> A "thing" about this bar is having FUN while we share some serious "stuff" about classic trains. NOT participating really isn't the way to keep things going! <double geesh>

Good Morning Barkeep and all Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox.  Cool here this a.m. (20's) and the rain we got last night turned to ice with a skiff of snow on top - lots of fun getting the vehicle unlocked this a.m.  Then we drove to work behind a truckload of concrete blocks followed by a tandem log truck (also loaded) - but we made it!

Happy Birthday Jan!

Now to the stack of stuff.

Rob - Nice Ottawa photograph, and check out the rubber-tired vehicles as well!

DL stopped by with comments - good to hear from you!

Pete - Enjoyed the pictures of "The Great Marquess."  Lovely name!

Your comments about train handling, etc. brought to mind another phrase, "Hitting the mark."  This means stopping the train so passengers can be boarded or offloaded.  Engineers use different landmarks which can be structures, signs, etc.  The marks will vary according to the type of locomotive used.

Back when passenger trains ran through Nashville, there was a sign on the station platform that said "Engine Cab Stop Here."  The engineer would make sure the cab door was even with the sign - amazing how they hit it time after time.  The ones that always impressed me were the ones who brought it in fast, pinched the air down and just "ghosted" to a stop - hard thing to do with a 15 car train and a pair of E8s!  I know, Boris, I'm getting all "misty."

Mike - Excellent selection of Suspension Bridge material.  Travel to Wheeling, WV and you can see a somewhat similar structure.  A list of C&O stations I have in the east wing listed two lines that operated via "Suspension Bridge" in 1957.  One was "St. Thomas - Suspension Bridge Line - Via NYCRR," and the other "Suspension Bridge - East Buffalo Line via Erie RR."  Talk abt. fallen flags - in more ways than one.

Jan - Nobody took up your challenge re "Century."  Well, "Game On!"  IMHO, 25 and 26 were the best in the east until the implosion of NYC passenger service when the "Century" had coaches added to it's consist.   The "Broadway" remained all Pullman so the title went to the P Company.  Overall, however, I would suggest that the "Super Chief" beat them all.  Boris, may I have my tin hat as I expect some incoming anytime.

OSP was by - I see where you have your K9 Korps is qualified as a railroad guard dog. Juneau looks very self-possessed and in charge of the situation.

Mine subdued a Suddenlink truck yesterday - chased it all the way to end of the fence line.  I asked him what he would do if he ever caught one, and he looked at me as if to say, "If you can drive, I can drive."  BTW, he's buddies with our local UPS driver who owns a bunch of Labs.

I was looking at the HO equipment - interesting to see that manufacturers liked the New Haven scheme and applied it to all sorts of power and equipment that the railroad never had - but, that's the fun of it, I think!   The NH had neither Es nor Fs.  However, they did share station space in Boston with NYC Es that ran on B&A passenger trains.  Both roads at South Station had PAs, though.

NYC 2933 was blt. At Schenectady in 1929 for the Big Four Lines.  It was r# in 1936.  Class was L2d.  Many of the Mohawks were true dual-purpose locomotives, IOW they could handle freight and passenger trains.

Quiz for the day - which manufacturers built 4-8-2s for the Central?

That in turn leads to some things about locomotive naming.

The Central could never have a Mountain class locomotive on their roster as they were the Water Level Route.  Thus they had Niagaras, Hudsons, and Mohawks.  The exception was the Berkshire (2-8-4), but that was a B&A locomotive, which is why it got it nickname.

Similar naming applied to certain roads in the south.  For example, the NC&StL could not have a Northern, so their 4-8-4s were called Dixies.  Second quiz for the day - what were the NC&StLs nicknames for their 4-8-4s?  Hint - it has to do with liveries.  One last bit of trivia, when WW2 began, some roads renamed their 2-8-2 (Mikado), MacArthurs.

Work safe

P.S.  Request for assistance noted for upcoming two days.

In dealing with Chitlins, be careful they may surprise you. They can erupt like Vesuvius. Chitlins are best with a Moon Pie but Catfish or Okra is O.K. too.

Page 172 - Ron (DD1) at 3:17 PM: Another nicely done ‘n innovate submission from our friend down south . . . Thumbs Up [tup] Just HOPE you aren't putting PRESSURE on yourself with these visits. That's NOT the idea, Mate - take it on a slow bell. I'm sure the guys will look forward to ‘n be most appreciative of ANYTHING you decide to share with us. Thumbs Up [tup]

Regarding that GG1 at the StL Museum of Transportation - the fotos simply do NOT tell the "story." There are far more exhibits than adequate siding space to show ‘em. So many are under cover in the "sheds" erected for that ‘n other purposes. The GG1 is not in the best of condition ‘n most probably is awaiting restorative work <I really don't know that for certain>. Anyway, I fully concur - the Amtrak livery is awful - but that's not the fault of the MoT folks. They can only do what their budget permits - just like our own household finances, eh Question [?] <sans credit, that is!> Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanx for the kind words regarding my Can-Am layout - it was fun putting it all together, especially since I'm hardly what one could or should call a "modeler." Just try to make it look the way my "mind's eye" says it should.

Yes, Juneau is not only a fine looking dog - he's a great deal of fun to be around. He keeps me "fit" - physically ‘n mentally! I "log" at least 4 miles per day in walks with him. Wonderful friend - and of course "Uncle Pete" is one of his pals. He even permits Pete to use "his" bed in our guest room! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Appreciate the visit, chat ‘n round! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Fine clarity in those fotos - nicely done, Mate! Thumbs Up [tup]

Tom-Some fine steam photo's sir , nice to know that the Mohawk their has some interesting history,I'd expect nothing less than a class donation like that from a RR opf the likes of the NYC.

I don't really worry too much about the UTB's but there are times that it PO's me ( good gawd gertie I'm starting to sound like Lars ) Shock [:O] Oh well deal no more mention of it from me.

Now you are refering to the photo's of Pete as before lunch was because why he's upright or  he's awake or both.Big Smile [:D]

I'm not supprised that Carols dad had a posting to NDHQ , it seems that most officers end up doing at least one tour there during their career. My zoomie uncle did as well the last four yeasr before he retired. He served on staff once his jet jockey days were over.

Mike-Some wonderfull pictures and urls of the old and new ( but still old ) bridges in Niagara falls. there was a guy now passed on that made full O scale models of all the train bridges from Niagara falls. He donated them to a freind of mine that is trying to get funding and a building to house a railroad museum in the Niagara peninsula, he's storing those models in his dad's garage at the moment.

Pete-Nice pics of more mainline steam action , thanks for sharing Thumbs Up [tup]That is a wonderfull hotel isn't it,it's rates would definatly gag a healthy maggot though.

Finally a Happy B-Day [bday] wish and round for our good transplanted Swedish friend Jan Thumbs Up [tup]

In the 1850s no one dreamt of Las Vegas or Disney World. The top tourist attraction in the U.S. was at the Canadian border, as was the phenominal bridge that was.

RON A great idea on posting the railway events of a certain year, starting in 1934Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup]. I am sure I will learn a lot of railway facts from these eventsYeah!! [yeah]. The Winwick area of England seems to have seen more of its fair share of accidentsSad [:(], and I am sure Tom will notice that 1934 is the year the GG1s were introduced.Yeah!! [yeah]

ROB Was it Einstein that said "Doing the exact same thing and expecting a different result is madness (or something like it),Question [?] but that is what I am doing with the computer. Starting it up and getting the sign showing no radio connection and re starting it until it decides to work. It is getting worse;Banged Head [banghead] if I knew which part was playing up I could replace itSigh [sigh]. I know when it is going to connect as the light on wireless post starts blinking, if the light stays constant it is not going to connectSad [:(]. As Tom says perhaps it is time for a new computer but when I get it going it seems better than it has been for a while (Touch wood)

Many thanks for the Streetcar photosApprove [^]Thumbs Up [tup], that is a great hotel building behind the Ottawa car.Yeah!! [yeah]

Good job that lady, in Jan's 20th Century photo, wasn't wearing that hat at Tom's dart match.Shock [:O]Big Smile [:D]

ERIC No wonder I did not get the answer to your photo quiz I was looking at the wrong photo,Dunce [D)] I still would not have got Penn station even if I was looking at the right oneSigh [sigh].

Yes I imagine it would take a lot of skill to stop a locomotive and train in exactly the right spot.Yeah!! [yeah] There is tales of a certain engine driver, in the steam age in the UK, who could reverse a pacific locomotive up to a walnut tied to a buffer on a car and break the shell and leave the nut whole.Wow!! [wow]Bow [bow]

Great photo of VCR #2Approve [^]Thumbs Up [tup].

CM3 Thanks for the info on the NYNH&H centenary in Eric's photoThumbs Up [tup] I noticed the design.

I will pass on your kind comments on the photos to AlanThumbs Up [tup] it certainly is magical when you can get a ‘Time Warp' photo today there is usually something in the photo that shows it was taken recently.   Good day Tom and all at the bar. A round on me and a good single malt Scotch for Jan,Happy B-Day [bday] today's birthday boy.

My ongoing project will be submitted each Monday(hopefully), but today is a special edition in honor of Jan.Happy B-Day [bday] I hope some of it will be of interest.

On this 23 day of  the year,

Tom: That is one terrible looking GG1. It should be taken off display until it can be given a nice paint job. That is not the way one would want to remember a classic engine.

Pete: Juneau is one nice looking dog. He must enjoy the cold, even if you don't.

The weather has been lousy down here in Mississippi. Snow in the northern and central areas of the state and freezing temperatures along the coast. The cold and sniffles have kept me inside, so my engine project is at a halt. Gas prices are $2.83. Lots of rain has kept my son from working his truck. He can't haul dirt when the dirt pits and construction sites are muddy.

Sorry I wasn't able to put out a special edition for Eric, as I just thought this up two days ago. I may put out a belated, special edition if I get a chance.

G'day Gents!

Gentlemen check your "in boxes" - Message has been sent to our "Offlline Email Net."

 * * * * *     * * * * *     * * * * *

I see that our across the pond friend, Dan (DL-UK) at 12:14 PM  has dropped by on Page 172 to perpetuate Wolfman Pete's "push" for a day of free beer. Hmmmmm, for the life of me - I cannot locate the source for this "idea." I've checked back a few Pages . . . hmmmmm.

Well, it goes like this: IF this is indeed true and our Bar Chandler wishes to make any salary 'round here, we need to FEED "Tilla 'n Cashinator" through the efforts of our paying customers.  Less concern about one's "wooden leg," 'n a bit more attention to keeping the place in a financially viable state is what we look for in our salaried employees! <geesh>

Now to your comment about those Renaissance cars with the blocked out windows. Interesting 'n plausible posit you came up with. HOWEVER, that consist did NOT have an observation dome <Park Car> nor any Budd equipment. In fact, those "refits" had not taken place yet. I seem to recall seeing baggage being unloaded 'n loaded from that car at Moncton . . . <my earlier comments to Eric refer>

I had been wonderin' whether you were able to view my fotos - but with the reference to the Renaissance cars, apparently you can.

Good to see ya, Mate! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

The fourth installment of our recent trip to the StL Museum of Transportation <Kirkwood, MO> by the Wolfman 'n Moi! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

#19 - #21 New York Central #2933 4-8-2 Mohawk. Built by ALCO in 1929. Between 1916 and 1943, the NYC acquired 544 Mohawks for freight operations extending from the east coast to the mid-west US. Later models were adapted for passenger use. This particular loco was built in Schenectady, NY and is one of only two remaining. There are very few updates to its original running gear and appliances. This model was referred to as "Mountain" by other railroads. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

Claim to fame: This is the ONLY modern steam locomotive donated for preservation by the New York Central!

#22 Southern Pacific #4460 4-8-4. Built by Lima in 1943. #4460 was the first in a series of 10 the SP assigned to halut it's Cascade and Klamath passenger rains between Portland, OR and Oakland, CA. Capable of generating 5.500 hp, the 430-ton loco features "skyuline casting" over the boiler top which is designed to life smoke away from the cab. Last operated in 1958 while powering an SP excursion train. Donated to the museum. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

#23 New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad <Nickel Plate Road> #170 4-6-4 Hudson. Built by ALCO in 1927. This 268ton loco was used in hi-speed passenger service until the mid-1940s. IT logged nearly 2 million miles <about 80 trips around the world!>. She is the oldest of the Hudson locos which were best known for service on the New York Central railroad. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

#24 St. Louis Waterworks Railway Interurban car #10. Built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1914. A double-ended interurban car; wooden car with steel sides and arched roof; operated from Grand Ave. to Chain of Rocks Water Plant in St. Louis. The couplers on the car allowed it to haul freight for the water plant. One of two built by SLC for the city in 1914. <paraphrased from literature purchased at the museum>

Hello Tom and all in

I'm pitching for Pete's award of a day of free beer later - but in the meantime I'll order a pint of Harvey's Bitter.

Juts been catching up with stuff from last few days.

Lars - yep - in England, in the middle - land of Sherwood Forest in fact.

Eric - have the Cracker Barrel visits declined since your work schedule reduced - or do you keep it up on your days off? They must have a good menu!

Pete - Thanks for your info on the Shamrock and Ulster express - shows how wrong I was - Tend to forget about Liverpool being a connecting port for Irish ferries (it still is of course, just not rail connected as it was once to the port). I think Heysham is just for the Isle of Man now (but it does still get some boat trains - if only the rail bus from Leeds to Morecambe I think! - if you can call that a boat train!)

You mentioned the 1975 S&D celebrations - there is a great British Transport Film of that which I have on video from the BFI series, I wonder if they will issue it on US compatible DVD maybe they will. It shows each loco in the cavalcade and ends with the diesel HST prototype. The APT is dragged by a peak as I recall. Did they ever find a Japanese translator?

Not sure about the Class 92 - I fear they are still in store!

As for the free beer - I think the number of 4-6-2 Blackmore Vale (21C123) is as follows - C is for the number of driving wheels - 3 as in Co-Co for diesel. 123 being the loco number - not sure what 21 is - is it a class number or a route classification restriction?

By the way - talking of pub food I had a great pint of Adnams old Ale the other night - with some good Pork Scratchings, at one of my local pubs.

Fergie - looks like you can't escape a tweet even out in the North Atlantic if the boss decides to implement one! No place to hide!

Tom, I raised my eyebrows regarding Can Am and the Settle line - I reckon Pete is just homesick for England's most scenic main line route!

Looks like the re-post of my Ren car saga was of interest, nice pics. Eric - I think the coloured windows were vinyled over for the transition car that they house electrical equipment in and use to link the Ren car to the Budd Park car  - basically it is stripped out ex seated passenger vehicle I think. Tom will know more I guess.

Mike - your links seem to have taken on a sporting flavour - need I say more.

Allan - that 1947 winter site was superb - of course I've heard my parents speak of it (probably less harsh in Sussex than in the North East). The picture links were superb - did anyone see the pic showing BR using a borrowed Jet aircraft engine to try and blast snow off a railway line - they seem to have it strapped to a flat bed wagon in their attempt - it's worth a look. Rail scenes near Dove Holes and other locations are good too.

Like you, our family does not have so many pictures from that period - I guess it was just too expensive unless you were a photography enthusiast and able to develop your own. Do have a nice set of pics my dad's Hornby Dublo model railway loft layout taken around 1949 - 1952. He must have been allowed a few shots for that.

Jan - certainly you did a big catch up! My grandparents took the 20th C Ltd from Chicago to New York in about 1966 after visiting my parents in Chicago - then took the Cunard Queen Elizabeth back to the UK (Southampton of course). Both services (the train and the Cunarder) probably did not have long for this world at that time.

Ron - nice run down for 1934.

Rob - liked the period pictures in those two recent pictures. Nice fins on the cars!

CM3 - enjoyed your last post

Regards

DL

G'day Gents!

A fine morning here at the Bar by the Ballast as Ruth has been kept busy - which of course benefits ALL of us <in absence of her man!> <uh oh> But at least she'll be soon taking off for her looooooooong weekend . . . Wow!! [wow] Wonder when 'n where to Question [?] Hmmmmm.

Boris, throw another couple of logs onto the fire - getting a bit chilly in here. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

A few ACKNOWLEDGMENTS just to stay ahead of things <those evening 'n nighttime Posts are back-breakers for me in trying to provide an early morning COMPLETE set of acknowledgments>:

Page 172 - CM3 Shane (coalminer3) at 9:19 AM: From the coal fields of southwestern WVA comes our man - SHANE after a loooooooong weekend. Snow in the mountains can only mean one thing - well maybe a few - but one fer sure, fer sure - C-O-L-D! Yeah!! [yeah] Juneau 'n I would love to share it with ya. Thumbs Up [tup]

Email response received 'n responded to - thanx! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Glad someone 'round here is enjoying those Yogisms - and YOU, Sir are ALSO an aficionado of "all things Stooges"! Wow!! [wow] <grin>

Yeah, that A&S steamer is in a sorry state - it IS sad to see such a thing. But then again, at least she's upright 'n in a place where restoration will occur - eventually. Thumbs Up [tup]

Appreciate the fine <I3 > Post, quarters 'n round for the boyz! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Page 172 - Jan (JanOlov) at 10:15 AM: Looks as if Jan is in a stupor of late - doing the "hit 'n run" Posts which aren't at all like him. Must be a heavy 'n heft work load. BUT we must admire the man for supporting the bar - which he has 'n is doing! Thumbs Up [tup]

20th Century Ltd stuff is ALWAYS a "keeper" 'round here. Yeah!! [yeah]

Page 172  - Rob (trolleyboy) at 10:26 AM 'n 10:23 AM: Our Resident Ontario Connection has connected with two Posts to keep this morning rollin' along. Thumbs Up [tup]

Regarding the UTB that you mentioned earlier - what's the point in even bringing it up Question [?] I mean those guys KNOW we're here. They have to KNOW we KNOW they are out there. So, if they've chosen to discontinue their patronage of the joint - let 'em go, Mate, let 'em go.

Sure, it bothers me - but not so much with the guy you referred to, but moreso with one I noted over on another Forum this day. He was really never a regular in the full definition of the word - but surely came on as if he wanted to be. Then he left, saying he'd be back on a certain date - and "poof" gone-ZO! Thumbs Down [tdn] That is Censored [censored] behavior for anyone, but especially from one we had considered as a friend . . . <triple barf>

Ever notice that the overwhelming majority of those who've left this place did so after being "one of us" 'n without so much as a reason Question [?] That's the rub my friend - that's the rub. So PLEASE, let's keep this kinda stuff for our "offline Email net." Deal Question [?]

As anyone who has met me should have readily picked up on - I'm not built to be a bar room brawler. However, one of the few things "my daddy told me" was to "let 'em know you were there" if you can't get out of "it" without throwing a punch or three. Roger Daddy - did so! Thumbs Up [tup] Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Me on a "wanted Poster" in St. John's Nfld! Wow!! [wow] I'm honored <honoured>! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Great comment about that woman's hat! A target <indeed> is what it looks like. Awk 'n Artie - lock in! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Nice trolley shots from Ottawa . . . always enjoyed being there. Didjaknow that my bride used to live there when she was a youngster Question [?] Her RCAF daddy was posted <as we say: stationed> there for a few years, as were pretty much all "careerists." Anyway, enjoyed the Pix here 'n over on "my other Thread"! Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

* * * * *     * * * * *     * * * * *

Pete 'n Juneau the "day after" our trip to the StL Museum of Transportation <Kirkwood, MO> - and of course BEFORE lunch at the TrainWreck Saloon! <grin>

Later! Thumbs Up [tup]
