Here’s something to enjoy regarding the Budd RDC’s from a 1950 advertisement found in my personal collection.

Single Car “Limited”

Here is the new railroad car which is a train in itself – the self-propelled, diesel-powered, all-stainless steel RDC-1. The Budd Company created it to perform a service both to railroads and their patrons, by carrying more passengers on short or long hauls at lower operating cost.

The RDC-1 seats ninety in air-conditioned comfort. With power transmitted hydraulically, from an effortless start it picks up speed like a whippet and stops in a fantastically short space . . . with the easy softness of pushing your hand against a pillow.

Railroad men foresee a wide usefulness for this car. It may be operated as a single unit, or a number of cars can be coupled into a train, operated by one engineman.

Improvement in any field of endeavor begins with imagination. The RDC-1 is another example of Budd practice which is first to envision clearly the need and then bring to bear all the resources of inventive engineering. It follows the modern stainless steel streamliner, the all-steel automobile body, the tapered steel disc wheel and so many other products in which Budd has translated imagination into practical accomplishment. Streamlined Sleeping Cars

The C&O owned a total of 72 lightweight streamlined sleeping cars. This total was of four different types of Sleeping cars, three Dome Sleeping cars from Budd and the other 94 cars came from Pullman Standard.
The three Budd built Dome sleeping cars were built for the C&O railroads stillborn Washington - Cincinnati daytime CHESSIE that never entered scheduled service. The interiors of the three cars featured 3 Drawing Rooms 5 Roomettes 1 Single Bedroom and the 24 seats in the dome. The C&O received the CHESSIE cars in August 1948 from Budd enough for three consists of the Newport News-Washington to Cincinnati trains. When the CHESSIE never entered scheduled service many of the cars for the new train were sold while others entered C&O service some only for a brief period. This was the case with the three Dome cars 1850 - 1852. The C&O assigned the cars to the SPORTSMAN the overnight trains between Washington - Newport News and Detroit. The C&O planned to assign the following names to the cars for Pullman service 1850 BELLE ISLE DOME, 1851 CHAMBERLIN DOME and 1852 HAMPTON ROADS DOME. The cars certainly stuck out in the SPORTSMAN when first assigned they were the only streamlined cars in an otherwise all heavyweight train.
In December, 1950 the three Dome Sleeping cars were sold to the B&O who in preparation for entry into service added lights to the car roofs ahead of the dome in order to view the night time scenery from the CAPITOL LIMITED between Washington and Chicago. Since the CAPITOL LIMITED only required two Domes the third ran every other day in the SHENANDOAH between Washington and Chicago. The B&O renamed the cars 7600 MOONLIGHT DOME 7601 STARLIGHT DOME and 7602 SUNLIGHT DOME.

The C&O placed a huge order with Pullman Standard in 1946 for 239 streamlined passenger cars and before the first cars were delivered realized they would never be able to use that quantity of cars. There were 97 lightweight streamlined sleeping cars ordered from Pullman Standard but only 69 were actually delivered to the C&O for service. Several other railroads purchased some of the C&O cars from Pullman Standard and they were delivered to those roads painted and lettered for the particular roads ready to enter service. This was true of the 10 Roomette 6 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars of which 75 had originally been ordered. The Illinois Central purchased five for assignment to the CITY OF MIAMI and PANAMA LIMITED. These five cars were delivered to the IC painted in the Chocolate, Yellow, and Orange scheme with the IC names CAIRO, CARBONDALE, CENTRALIA, CHAMPAIGN and COVINGTON. Ten more were sold to the B&O with the following names and numbers. 7040 AUGLAISE, 7041 CATOCTIN, 7042 GUYANDOTTE, 7043 KOKOSING, 7044 MUSCATUCK, 7045 OPEQUON, 7046 SHENANGO, 7047 TUSCARAWAS, 7048 TYGART and 7049 YOUGHIOGHENY. The B&O assigned them to the CAPITOL LIMITED and other schedules.
The four that went directly to the Rio Grande were numbered and named 1270 JOHN EVANS, 1271 DAVID MOFFAT, 1272 BRIGHAM YOUNG, and 1273 HEBER C. KIMBALL. These cars were assigned to the overnight Denver - Salt Lake City PROSPECTORS. An interesting side note on the Rio Grande cars was they were rebuilt to 5 Section 6 Double Bedroom and 5 Roomette cars between December 1950 and March 1951 at Pullman Calumet.
The remaining fifty-six 10 Roomette 5 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars were delivered to the C&O in the Enchantment Blue and Yellow paint scheme. All were assigned CITY names for towns and cities located along the C&O. These C&O cars were interesting in that they featured the 6 Double Bedrooms in the center of the cars with 5 Roomettes over each truck. This gave the more expensive bedrooms a quieter ride being located in the center of the cars.
The C&O to operate their services needed a total of thirty-eight 10-6 sleeping cars nightly for their Chicago - Michigan trains and the GEORGE WASHINGTON, SPORTSMAN and FAST FLYING VIRGINIAN. Only four of the 11 Double Bedrooms operated nightly with one held in reserve. The 11 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars were assigned to the FAST FLYING VIRGINIAN between New York and Hot Springs and New York and White Sulphur Springs. It was not unusual to see one of the 11 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars parked on the siding at the famed C&O Greenbrier Hotel. Only the GEORGE WASHINGTON was assigned the 5 Double Bedroom Buffet Lounge Observations.

One of the three cars was renamed by the Seaboard Coast Line after all it wouldn't do to have a SCL Sleeper running with the name of the C&O resort GREENBRIAR on its flanks.

One month later in March 1951 two more CLUB series cars ownership was transferred to the B&O with the following name and number changes. These two cars were assigned to the CAPITOL LIMITED between Washington and Chicago.

C&O 2502 TIDEWATER CLUB became B&O 7500 NAPPANEE

C&O 2507 WOLVERINE CLUB became B&O 7501 WAWASEE

C&O 2504 NEW RIVER CLUB was rebuilt to a business car in 1951 and numbered and named 29 CHESSIE. This was assigned to C&O president Robert R. Young.
In November - December 1961 the C&O rebuilt the 2500 BLUE GRASS CLUB 2503 ALLEGHENY CLUB and 2506 BLUEGRASS CLUB. The rebuilding included the removal of all stainless steel fluted panels and new smooth steel side panels were installed below the windows to repair the corrosion damage. The interiors were remodeled to Crew Dormitory - Kitchen - Pantry 28 seat Dining cars. After the rebuilding the cars were renumbered 1923, 1925, and 1924 respectively.

The Chesapeake & Ohio purchased six domes all delivered by Budd in 1948 these six domes were of two different types. There were 3-coach–lounge observations 1875-1877 and three family room dome cars 1850-1852 as they were called. Both types of domes were built for the CHESSIE a new daytime streamliner between Washington – Newport News and Cincinnati. The CHESSIE would have operated as two sections east of Charleston. One section of the CHESSIE to and from Washington and the other section of the CHESSIE to and from Phoebus (Newport News), consolidating westbound at Charleston and splitting at this point eastbound. Alas, it really didn’t matter, as the CHESSIE never entered service. The forty-six cars delivered by Budd in August 1948 for the CHESSIE trains were disbursed over the next few years. All six of the dome cars were sold. The Dome sleeping cars were sold to the B&O in December 1950 for service in the CAPITOL LIMITED and SHENANDOAH. The C&O had seriously considered adding these cars to their own SPORTSMAN and even went so far as to assign names to the cars even though the names were not actually applied as follows:

1852 HAMPTON ROADS DOME

The other three CHESSIE domes the coach lounge Observations featured 20 seats forward of the dome and 16 seat lounge aft of the dome in the rounded end of the cars. A newsagent’s stand and the cars restrooms were located beneath the 24 seat domes. The C&O assigned these cars to service in the PERE MARQUETTES between Chicago – Grand Rapids and Detroit – Grand Rapids. The three cars 1875-1877 were sold to the Rio Grande in September 1949. Before delivery to the Rio Grande the cars were fitted with an adaptor complete with diaphragm for mid-train operation. After repainting in Grande Gold and Black the cars were renumbered 1248-1250 respectively.

Streamlined Dome Cars

The Wabash received its second postwar diesel powered streamlined train in January 1950. Unlike the earlier CITY OF KANSAS CITY delivered in November 1947by American Car & Foundry, the new BLUE BIRD was a Budd built streamliner. The earlier train was built of steel and painted in the beautiful blue and white paint scheme of the Wabash. The new streamliner in stainless steel also received Wabash blue between the fluted panels. The earlier CITY OF KANSAS CITY operating a daily round trip between St. Louis and Kansas City was built as a seven-car train powered by a single EMD E7A.
The new BLUE BIRD inaugurated February 26, 1950 was a six-car train as built, with four of those cars domes. Three were coach domes numbered 200-202 with the standard 24-seats in the dome and 54-coach seats on the main level 20-forward of the dome and 34 to the rear of the dome with large bathrooms located beneath the domes. The fourth dome was a dome parlor observation identical to those built for the earlier Burlington VISTA-DOME TWIN ZEPHYRS. The Wabash Dome observation 1601 featured 24 seats in the dome, 9-parlor seats on the main level forward of the dome and 18-parlor seats aft of the dome. There were two additional lounge chairs that were sold as parlor space when the car was full located at the rear of the car in the rounded end. These seats were sold at parlor rates when the car was fully booked. Beneath the dome a 5-seat parlor drawing room with private restroom and a pair of restrooms for the parlor car patrons. The 1601 operated by Pullman unlike the Burlington who operated their parlor cars with Burlington personnel.
The Wabash advertising referred to the BLUE BIRD as a Domeliner, this reference would later refer to all UP streamliners equipped with domes.
The new BLUE BIRD operated a daily round trip between St. Louis and Chicago northbound in the morning and late afternoon departure southbound, the new Domeliner powered by a single EMD E8A was the only Chicago – St. Louis train equipped with domes prior to Amtrak.

From the beginning of streamlined BLUE BIRD operation the demand for Parlor seats exceeded the capacity of the 1601. With that in mind the Wabash ordered a single dome parlor car from Pullman Standard. The reason the car was not a Budd car as the rest of the BLUE BIRD consist was simply the fact that the latter manufacturer was busy with other orders and the cost for a single car was prohibitive. Thus the BLUE BIRD became one of those rare trains to operate with domes from two manufacturers in the same consist. The new Dome parlor delivered in July 1952 was a painted car without fluted stainless panels, so always stood out when operated in the BLUE BIRD. The new car seated 24 in the standard flat glass paneled dome and beneath the dome was located the “BLUE BIRD Room”. This room with seating for eleven was for private parties and served as a private dining room or lounge. At other times the “BLUE BIRD Room” was used as a lounge for all parlor passengers. The car featured a 5- seat parlor drawing room with its own private bathroom, and 21-parlor seats on the main level. The new Pullman Standard built car was numbered 1602 and like the 1601 was operated by Pullman, as were all Parlor cars on the Wabash.
This overabundance of domes in the BLUE BIRD did not last long as one of the coach domes was transferred to the CITY OF KANSAS CITY giving that train dome status.
In later years the Wabash would assign one of the dome parlors to the BANNER BLUE between St. Louis and Chicago. Thus the Wabash with five domes spread them among three trains.

One final dome was built for the Wabash part of the last new dome car order built in November – December 1958. This order was unusual in two ways first they were the only coach domes built by Pullman Standard with curved glass panels, and Pullman Standard built the seven dome coaches to American Car & Foundry plans for the Wabash and Union Pacific. They were duplicates of the AC&F built coach domes delivered to the Union Pacific in 1955 for the CHALLENGER and CITY OF PORTLAND. The Wabash received one and the UP received five of these new dome coaches painted in full streamliner colors for operation in the CITY OF ST. LOUIS train sets operating between St. Louis and Los Angeles. The Wabash Dome Coach car was numbered 203 continuing the number sequence from the Budd built dome coaches built for the BLUE BIRD. Like the earlier dome coaches built for the UP the seating in these cars was 36 on the main level with a pair of large restrooms beneath the dome.

Streamlined Dining & Lounge Cars

The Wabash received their first streamliner in October 1947 a seven-car train for service between St. Louis and Kansas City round trip daily. The CITY OF KANSAS CITY streamliner was powered by an EMD E-7A unit ample power for the seven cars that entered service November 26, 1947. American Car & Foundry at their St. Charles, Missouri plant built the seven cars.
Two of the new cars featured dining and lounge space. The fifth car in the train consist was a 28-seat coach 10-seat lunch counter 32-seat Coach numbered 1525. The sixth car number 50 was a 40-seat dining car with a 14-seat lounge.

A six-car streamliner entered Wabash service February 26, 1950 between St. Louis and Chicago powered by an EMD E-8A. Budd built the new train and four of the six cars were dome cars. The only two flat-topped cars are the two we are concerned with here.
The first car in the new BLUE BIRD train was a Baggage 9-seat Lunch Counter 23-seat Cocktail Lounge car number 650.
The fifth car in the BLUE BIRD consist was a 40-seat dining 12-seat lounge car number 51.

In July 1952 the Wabash received a Pullman Standard built dome parlor car 1602. This car was added to the BLUE BIRD and featured eleven seat Dining room beneath the dome named the Blue Bird Room; this dining lounge area was served from the dining car ahead. This car operated to the rear of the dining-lounge car 51, ahead of the dome parlor observation 1601. The car was interesting as it was a one of a kind with the Blue Bird Room beneath the dome and parlor seating ahead of and behind the special dining room on the cars main level. The car also had a 5-seat Parlor Drawing Room and 21 parlor seats. In the dome were the usual 24 seats.

In August 1957 the Wabash purchased two Café – Lounge cars used from the B&M their 70 BALD EAGLE and 71 HERMIT THRUSH. Originally built for the B&M in August – September 1947 for their PINE TREE, FLYING YANKEE and KENNEBEC. These cars featured 24-seat Café and 18-seat Lounges. The Wabash after repainting numbered the cars 1570 and 1571 and assigned the cars to trains 2-3 the overnight DETROIT LIMITED and ST. LOUIS LIMITED.

Streamlined sleeping Cars

The Wabash owned a total of twelve lightweight stream-lined sleeping cars. Ten were 12 Roomette 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars with four painted UP streamliner colors, they were assigned to the CITY OF ST. LOUIS between St. Louis and Los Angeles and carried WESTERN prefix names. These WESTERN prefix cars were delivered in February 1950 by American Car & Foundry along with six BLUE prefix names cars of the same type painted in Blue and White for service in Wabash overnight trains between Chicago and St. Louis and St. Louis and Detroit trains. Two BLUE prefix cars were assigned one per consist to the overnight Detroit - St. Louis trains and two per consist were assigned to the overnight Chicago - St. Louis trains.

In August 1951 ownership of Wabash WESTERN SCENE was transferred to the Union Pacific.
Three 6 Section 6 Roomette 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars were delivered to the Wabash between November 1955 and February 1956 for assignment to the CITY OF ST. LOUIS pool of cars. These cars were assigned NATIONAL prefix names and the Bedrooms were located mid-car between the trucks, Sections were located at one end and Roomettes at the other end.

Here’s something to enjoy regarding the Budd Company and the Wabash from an advertisement (early 1950s) found in one of my scrap books.


New Blue Bird On The Wabash

This is the Wabash Railroad’s new Budd-built, all-stainless steel Blue Bird, on its winging flight between St. Louis and Chicago. The Blue Bird will make the round trip daily between these two great terminal cities, adding to the completeness of Wabash service and presenting to its passengers comfort and luxury in rail travel previously unknown.

For the Blue Bird is the latest in the roster of distinguished name trains which Budd has created for the modernization of American railroads. Four of its cars are Vista-Domes, giving passengers an unobstructed view of the rolling prairies, picturesque bluffs and river scenery along the way.

Like all Budd-designed, Budd-built equipment, this train illustrates a principle – that better products are made of ideas as well as steel. This was true of the all-steel automobile body which Budd originated and which has made Budd the largest independent builder of body components in the world. It was true of the steel wheel which Budd developed to take the place of wood. It has been demonstrated in the Budd Disc Brake, and in stainless steel highway trailers.

In the railroad field, Budd ideas were revolutionary. Ideas that attract passengers by making rail travel more inviting. Ideas that permit faster schedules and yield substantial operating economies. It was Budd vision which led to the whole concept of the modern, stainless steel light weight streamliner. And Budd today is the only car builder who employs the superior strength of stainless steel to achieve lightweight construction with safety.

The L&N/NC&STL first streamlined passenger cars came to these railroads from American Car & Foundry in 1946. Actually there were four seven-car coach streamliners two being lettered and owned by both roads and the other two being wholly owned by the L&N.
The first two train sets to enter service were the GEORGIANS inaugurated November 17, 1946 between St. Louis and Atlanta daily in each direction over the 611-mile route. The new GEORGIANS operated over the L&N between St. Louis and Nashville and the NC&STL between Nashville and Atlanta. The initial schedule called for 12 hours 55 minutes in either direction.
The second pair of streamliners inaugurated on the same November 17, 1946 was the HUMMING BIRDS operating overnight between Cincinnati and New Orleans in 19 hours either direction. This was faster then the L&N railroads heavyweight still posh all Pullman PAN – AMERICAN between the two city pairs.
Both the GEORGIAN and HUMMING BIRD consists were identical. An interesting feature of both new trains was the lack of a Baggage Car as no checked baggage was handled by either train. The first car in each consist was a 48 revenue seat Coach with 10 seat smoking lounge followed by a pair of 60 revenue seat Coaches. Next a 48-seat dining car, two more 60-revenue seat coaches and the last car was a 24 seat Tavern lounge Bar 28 seat Lounge car. The Dining and Tavern Lounge Cars were named as well as numbered. The cars initially assigned to the GEORGIAN train sets are identified by a (G) in parenthesis and those assigned to the HUMMING BIRD train sets are identified by the letter (H) in parenthesis. Power for the new streamliners was a single new EMD E7A unit for each seven-car streamliner. The power and cars assigned to the GEORGIAN were lettered for both the L&N /NC&STL while those assigned to the HUMMING BIRD were lettered for the L&N only.

The next streamlined train to enter service on the L&N NC&STL was a NC&STL train named the CITY OF MEMPHIS. The CITY OF MEMPHIS was a six-car streamliner rebuilt from heavyweight cars by the NC&STL Nashville shops. The shops also streamlined a matching Pacific Locomotive for the new train. The CITY OF MEMPHIS operated on a fast five-hour schedule between Nashville and Memphis in each direction. New postwar streamlined steam powered trains were rare as the diesel was becoming the prominent power for the new streamlined trains, only the N&W and NC&STL favored streamlined steam. The cars selected for rebuilding and streamlining were originally Pullman heavyweight Parlor Cars purchased by the NC&STL in 1941 and converted to heavyweight coaches at that time. The first car in the consist was a Baggage 30’ Railway Post Office Car followed by a 44 revenue seat Coach with a 18 seat Dinette Lounge. Next were a pair of 56 revenue seat Coaches trailed by a 48 seat Dining Bar Lounge Car and the last car was a 48 seat Coach 21 seat Lounge Observation car. The CITY OF MEMPHIS was inaugurated May 17, 1947 over the 239-mile route in each direction. The Pacific streamlined to pull the CITY OF MEMPHIS was the 535.

The L&N was one of the operating partners in the Southern Railways CRESCENT and when that train received streamlined equipment in 1949-50 twelve of the cars were L&N owned. Among the L&N owned cars was three Coaches two 52-revenue seat cars 3250 and 3251 and one 58-revenue seat car 3252 all delivered by Budd in October 1949. The streamlined CRESCENT was an all-Pullman operation between New York and Atlanta initially and only operated between Atlanta and New Orleans with coaches in its consists.

Needing additional Coach capacity in the CITY OF MEMPHIS the NC&STL shopped the 44 seat Coach 18 seat Dinette car 1100 in March 1951 and remodeled it to a straight 56 revenue seat coach like the others. This work was done in the NC&STL Nashville shops and was completed in less than a week.
Additional new coaches were purchased by the L&N and delivered in the fall of 1955 from American Car & Foundry for service in the HUMMING BIRD and GEORGIAN trains. These thirteen cars represented the last new cars purchased by the L&N.

The L&N shops became famous for taking older heavyweight cars and installing large windows in new welded sides and installing all new interiors. The cars were equipped with folding steps in the vestibules and mechanical air conditioners were installed beneath the car floors. The cars retained their clerestory roofs so were never considered streamlined for this reason. Actually the work performed on these cars was exceptionally fine showing the craftsmanship performed by the L&N shop personnel.
In June 1969 the L&N purchased the C&EI and became the owner of the following Coach type cars from the C&EI.

Streamlined Head End Cars

The first streamlined head end car to appear on these two roads was the Baggage 30’ Railway Post Office car 1040 of the NC&STL. This car was originally a heavyweight Pullman Parlor car named HAWSTONE. In the opening days of WW II a large number of these cars were sold to Railroads for conversion to Coaches. The NC&STL purchased a number of these cars in June 1941 and converted them to coaches. The HAWSTONE was rebuilt to a 72 seat Coach and numbered 733. In April 1947 six of these 700 series Coaches were streamlined and converted into the six car CITY OF MEMPHIS streamliner operating a round trip service daily between Nashville and Memphis. The 733 was rebuilt to the 1040 at that time becoming the CITY OF MEMPHIS head end car a Baggage 30' Railway Post Office Car.
The L&N purchased no streamlined head end cars for any of there own trains but did purchase four for operation in the Southern Railways CRESCENT operating between New York and New Orleans daily. Since the CRESCENT operated over L&N trackage part of its run into New Orleans they owned several cars in this trains consists. In November – December 1949 the L&N received two Baggage 60’ Railway Post Office cars 1120 and 1121 for CRESCENT service. The two cars operated in the CRESCENT initially between Washington and New Orleans only although some evidence suggests they operated all the way to New York. But not as working RPO cars north of Washington. The other two head end cars owned by the L&N for CRESCENT service were a pair of Baggage 22 Crew Dormitory Cars 1598 and 1599. The 1598 was built by American Car & Foundry and the 1599 was delivered by Pullman Standard both in June 1950.

The L&N inaugurated four new 7-car coach streamliners November 17, 1946. Two operated as the HUMMING BIRD between Cincinnati and New Orleans daily in each direction. The other two train sets operated as the GEORGIAN between St. Louis and Atlanta daily in each direction. Each Blue and Anodized Aluminum streamliner was identical and powered by an EMD E7A unit up front. Those cars assigned to the two HUMMING BIRD consists were lettered for the L&N only. Those operated in GEORGIAN service were lettered for both the L&N and NC&STL.

Streamlined Sleeping Cars

The L&N received their first five lightweight streamlined sleeping cars in October 1949 from Pullman Standard. Three of these cars were delivered with smooth sides and painted in PRR Tuscan Red 3410 GREEN RIVER, 3411 KENTUCKY RIVER, and 3412 BARREN RIVER. These three 10 Roomette 6 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars were the L&N railways contribution to through New York to Louisville, Nashville and Memphis service. The PRR contributed six 10-Roomette 6 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars to this service. Westbound the three cars traveled in the PRR CINCINNATI LIMITED from New York to Cincinnati where the three sleeping cars were handed off to the L&N. L&N train #99 forwarded the three sleeping cars beyond. Train #99 dropped the Louisville Sleeping car first then dropped the second sleeping car at Bowling Green where it was picked up by train #199 and forwarded to Memphis. The third sleeping car continued in train #99 to Nashville. Eastbound the two sleeping cars originating in Nashville and Louisville traveled in train #8 to Cincinnati. At Cincinnati the cars were transferred to the eastbound PRR CINCINNATI LIMITED. The third sleeping car returning from Memphis took a rather different return route to New York. The car traveled on the rear of L&N train #104 between Memphis and Bowling Green where it was set out and picked up by L&N train #4 AZALEAN to Cincinnati. From Cincinnati the car traveled to Pittsburgh in PRR train #204 where it was once again set out. It completed the trip from Pittsburgh to New York City in the PRR IRON CITY EXPRESS.
The other two 10-6 Sleeping cars delivered at the same time to the L&N were built to the same Plan and Lot numbers and the only difference was externally as these two cars were sheathed in fluted stainless steel panels. These two cars were assigned to the Southern Railway CRESCENT LIMITED between New York and New Orleans. These two cars were 3400 MOBILE RIVER and 3401 PEARL RIVER.

The L&N along with the C&EI and NC&STL purchased a group of twenty-nine 6 Section 6 Roomette 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars that were delivered by Pullman Standard in the spring of 1953. These cars were built with the Bedrooms located in the center of the car giving the more expensive accommodation the quieter ride. Bedrooms A-B and C-D could be opened ensuite. Each Bedroom had a private bathroom annex and the sinks did not fold into the wall. These cars were assigned PINE series names. The cars were assigned to three trains initially the HUMMING BIRD, GEORGIAN, and PAN-AMERICAN.
The HUMMING BIRD was a St. Louis-Chicago- Cincinnati to New Orleans train. The HUMMING BIRD was assigned PINE series sleeping cars between Chicago - New Orleans, Chicago - Birmingham, St. Louis - Montgomery, Cincinnati - New Orleans and Cincinnati - Memphis.
The GEORGIAN was a St. Louis - Chicago to Atlanta overnight train. The GEORGIAN was assigned PINE series sleeping cars operating between St. Louis - Atlanta and Chicago - Atlanta.
The third train initially assigned PINE series sleeping cars was the PAN-AMERICAN a Cincinnati - New Orleans train. The PAN-AMERICAN carried a Pittsburgh - New Orleans sleeper, two or three Cincinnati - New Orleans sleeping cars depending on the season. A single Birmingham - Mobile sleeping car completed the sleeping car section of the PAN-AMERICAN. Since the GEORGIAN operated over the NC&STL, L&N and C&EI they all three contributed sleeping cars to this train. The HUMMING BIRD operated over the L&N and C&EI so sleeping cars were provided by both for this train. The PAN-AMERICAN was an L&N operation so they were the only railroad contributing cars to these train sets.
Later the cars found there way into the GULF WIND between New Orleans and Jacksonville.

Louisville & Nashville 6-4-6 sleeping car 3465 SOUTHERN PINE was renamed 3465 DIXIE PINE in December 1955. This was done to avoid a conflict with new Seaboard Air Line 4 Section 4 Roomette 5 Double Bedroom 1 Compartment sleeping car 51 SOUTHERN PINES delivered in November 1956by Budd.
The L&N were one of five railroads responsible for the operation of the DIXIE FLAGLER later renamed DIXIELAND in its travels between Chicago and Miami. This DIXIELAND (former DIXIE FLAGLER) before the new lightweight streamlined sleeping cars were introduced operated over the C&EI between Chicago and Evansville, L&N between Evansville and Nashville, NC&STL between Nashville and Atlanta, ACL between Atlanta and Jacksonville, and C&EI between Jacksonville and Miami. The operating roads purchased nine 4 Section 4 Roomette 1 Compartment 5 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars for the DIXIELAND. These cars featured the Compartment and Double Bedrooms in the center of the car with the Roomettes at one end the Sections at the other. The new sleeping cars entered service for the 1954-55 winter season.

It was quite surprising to find new streamlined sleeping cars being purchased in 1954 with Sections. The cars were purchased to provide the widest variety in accommodations possible but many roads were finding it more difficult to sell Sections due to there lack of private restroom facilities.
In August 1957 all former NC&STL streamlined sleeping cars were renumbered into the L&N after the merger retaining there original names as follows.

The three cars were 3461 MOUNTAIN PINE, 3462 PLANTATION PINE, and 3466 TALL PINE. These cars as Crew Dormitory cars were assigned to the PAN-AMERICAN between Cincinnati and New Orleans.
The L&N purchased the following C&EI lightweight stream-lined sleeping cars in June 1969 900 SLASH PINE, 901 PITCH PINE, 902 LOBLOLLY PINE, 903 POND PINE, 904 FLORIDA FLOWERS, and 905 FLORIDA LAKES. Five of the six former C&EI sleeping cars were retired in August 1969 and the sixth was retired in July 1970.

Streamlined Head End Cars

The name train of the Northern Pacific Railway was the NORTH COAST LIMITED and it would be September of 1948 before this train would become fully streamlined with six sets of equipment between Chicago and Seattle – Portland. Each consist of the NORTH COAST LIMITED operated with a pair of Head End cars a Water Baggage and a 30’ Railway Post Office 22 Crew Dormitory Car.
The Water – Baggage Cars were unique to the Northern Pacific as they carried 3,000 gallons of water in tanks at the forward end to supply additional water for the steam generators located in the diesel units. This was especially useful in the bad water district of the western Dakotas and eastern Montana where steam locomotives operated with very large capacity water tanks and even then good water was brought by tank car to the water towers located in this area of the railroad. These six cars NP 400 – 405 were delivered in 1946 – 1947 by Pullman Standard. Since additional water other than that carried by the CB&Q E units in charge of the NORTH COAST LIMITED between there and Chicago the tanks were generally empty for this part of the trip. The 30’ Railway Post Office 22 Crew Dormitory Cars 425 – 430 were delivered over the same time period and operated directly behind the Water Baggage Cars in the NORTH COAST LIMITED consists.

In April – May 1956 Pullman Standard delivered ten lightweight streamlined Baggage Cars to the NP numbers 200 – 209. An additional ten arrived from Pullman Standard numbered 210 – 219 in August – September 1957. In June – July 1958 Pullman Standard delivered ten more numbers 220 – 229.

During the Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962 the NP suffered two accidents with NORTH COAST LIMITED trains in each incident damage was severe to Water Baggage cars and the NP was forced to stop for additional water along the way with these two consists. The NP placed tank cars of water at certain station stops to refill the small water tanks the diesels were equipped with until the two NORTH COAST LIMITED Water Baggage cars were returned to service. Beginning in October, 1962 the NP rebuilt two standard streamlined Baggage Cars 208 and 209 into Water Baggage Cars by adding three thousand gallon water tanks at one end and equipping the cars with the transfer lines to the diesel units ahead. After conversion to Water Baggage Cars the cars were numbered 406 and 407 respectively.
In December 1963 Pullman Standard delivered ten additional Baggage Cars to the Northern Pacific numbers 230 – 239.
One final lot of ten streamlined Baggage Cars came from St. Louis Car in November – December 1965 numbers 250 – 259. All of these cars like the previous Baggage Cars were assigned to General service.

In October and November 1965 the NP shops converted two additional Baggage Cars 210 and 218 into Water Baggage Cars 408 and 409.
A year later in September 1966 Baggage Car 211 was rebuilt to Water Baggage car 410 and in March 1967 one final baggage car 222 was rebuilt to a water Baggage Car and numbered 222. By this time the NP NORTH COAST LIMITED and MAINSTREETER were both equipped with Water Baggage Cars between St. Paul and Seattle and in the case of the NORTH COAST LIMITED the cars actually operated Seattle - Chicago.

Streamlined Dining & Lounge Cars

In 1947 – 1948 the Northern Pacific received its first lightweight streamlined cars. The cars were delivered to equip six NORTH COAST LIMITED train sets. The NP premier train and oldest name train operating between Chicago and Seattle – Portland – Tacoma. Each of the train sets operated with three feature cars. The first of these in each consist was a 26-seat coach Buffet 19-seat Lounge car. This car was for the coach passengers of the train and was trainlined as the seventh car in each train. These cars were numbered 494-499. They were delivered to the NP in June – July 1947 and were among the first new cars to operate in the otherwise heavyweight NORTH COAST LIMITED.

Cars 494 – 499 were shopped one at a time between July and October 1954 receiving the Raymond Loewy treatment at that time being rebuilt to the famous Lewis & Clark Travelers Rest cars. These cars featured a 14-seat Lunch Counter Kitchen – Bar 12-seat cocktail lounge 17-seat lounge. Leather was applied to the wall of the car on one side in this area and a map showing the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition was featured on this cowhide. These cars were among the finest lounge cars to ever enter service on a U.S. railroad.
The next car in each NORTH COAST LIMITED consist was a 12-seat Lunch Counter 30-seat Dining car 450 – 454 and CB&Q owned 455. The dining cars operated from St. Paul east to Chicago and then west to Seattle and return east to St. Paul. They were changed out in St. Paul, as this was where the NP Commissary dept. was located.

All six Lunch Counter – dining cars were rebuilt to full 48-seat dining cars between October 1953 and March 1954 retaining their original numbers. They operated as 40-seat dining cars in non-peak travel periods having eight seats at booths that were used a waiting and cocktail lounge during those times. During the peak travel periods the cars operated as 48-seat dining cars with the four booths pressed into dining car service. This was also part of the Raymond Loewy rebuilding of the NORTH COAST LIMITED. All Northern Pacific cars were being repainted into the new scheme of two-tone green with white lettering and separation stripes designed by Raymond Loewy. This scheme replaced a very old-fashioned paint scheme of Pullman Green and Pine green with yellow striping and lettering. The new paint scheme would last the NP into the BN merger in fact well into the Amtrak era and was easily one of the most attractive schemes ever introduced by a railroad to its passenger equipment. The dining cars remained in NORTH COAST LIMITED service until 1959 when they were replaced by new Budd built dining cars in the NORTH COAST LIMITED. These cars were then assigned to the MAINSTREETER. In May – June 1962 numbers 450-453, 455 and 456 were rebuilt to 32-seat dining 16-seat lounge cars.
Once again cars 450, 451, 453 and 456 were rebuilt between June 1967 and January 1968 into economy buffet cars with a steam table for service replacing three tables on one side of the car. This was done in an effort to get a handle on the runaway dining car expenses of the MAINSTREETER. The cars retained their lounge seating. Two other older dining cars were converted to Buffet Lounge cars 454 in May 1966 and car 457 followed a year later in May 1967.
The last car in each streamlined NP NORTH COAST LIMITED was a 4-Double Bedroom 1 Compartment Buffet 26-seat Lounge Observation. These cars were al named for business clubs located in cities served by the NORTH COAST LIMITED. These cars were not delivered until June – July 1948 and all six NORTH COAST LIMITED train sets were completely equipped with new cars by September 1948.

In 1954 – 55 the CLUB suffix cars lost their names in favor of numbers only which became standard practice for all NP sleeping cars. The CLUBS were numbered as follows

At the same time the CLUB series cars were numbered the lounge observation area was extensively remodeled giving a more modern appearance to the lounge. The seating in the remodeled lounge remained the same at 27.
Pullman Standard delivered two new 40-seat dining cars in December 1953 for assignment to the Seattle – Portland NP pool trains. These two cars were identical to the rebuilt cars operating in the NORTH COAST LIMITED. Like those cars operating in the NORTH COAST LIMITED dining car 456 and 457 were expandable to 48-seats during peak travel periods.

In October 1954 Pullman Standard delivered two Parlor – Buffet Lounge cars 492 and 493 to the NP for assignment to the NP Seattle – Portland pool trains 407-408. These cars had a 32-seat lounge at one end with a buffet next followed by 14-seat Parlor cars. One of these cars brought up the markers of 407 northbound while southbound in 408 for many years were four Southern Pacific sleeping cars trailing the Parlor Buffet Lounge car. These were through cars destined for that afternoons southbound CASCADE. The Parlor seating was to the rear so both coach and first class passengers could use the Buffet – Lounge in the two cars. Both cars operated up until Amtrak on these trains.

Pullman Standard delivered five nearly identical Lounge Buffet Parlor cars to the NP in July 1956 numbered 487 – 491. These five cars were the only new cars ever constructed for the MAINSTREETER the secondary train between Seattle-Tacoma-Portland and Chicago. These cars were named Holiday Lounge cars for service in the MAINSTREETER. It was unusual for long distance trains to operate parlor cars. In the case of the MAINSTREETER the Parlor car space was sold for daytime travel in Montana, and North Dakota. During the evening hours the parlor seating was opened up as additional lounge space. The parlor seating rarely sold on these trains and eventually the parlor was treated as additional lounge space during the day and evening. These cars only operated between Seattle and St. Paul as the MAINSTREETER through cars were combined with the CB&Q BLACKHAWK between St. Paul and Chicago. The MAINSTREETER dining and Parlor Buffet Lounge cars only operated between St. Paul and Seattle. Between November 1962 and March 1963 all five cars were rebuilt to 48-seat leg-rest coaches and renumbered 581-585.

The NP NORTH COAST LIMITED received new Budd built 40-seat dining cars in December 1957 – January 1958. These cars were expandable to 48 seats during the busy peak travel periods by utilizing the booth seating at each end of the dining seating. During off peak travel periods the booths were used for cocktails and waiting areas for the dining area. These were the last new dining cars built in the United States until Amtrak built dining cars in the 1970’s.

At the end of 1966 and into the beginning of 1967 the NP retired the Sleeper lounge observations from NORTH COAST LIMITED service, this left the trains with no separate lounge facilities for first class passengers. There have been many reasons offered as to why the NP retired these classic observation cars, one was that it made the addition and deletion of the Portland cars easier at Pasco and also cut down the switching at St Paul, but the truth was these cars sleeping accommodation was dated not having a separate bathroom annex. The NP found it more difficult to sell the space in these cars except during peak travel periods. Also sleeping passengers did not enjoy the switching of cars at Pasco westbound or westbound at St. Paul. In any event the cars were retired and sold privately, several survive in private ownership as this is written in 2002.
It didn’t take the Pullman passengers long to let the NP know they were unhappy about this turn of events. In order to appease these first class passengers the NP remodeled six of their Vista Dome sleeping cars that had been delivered in 1954 into “Lounge in the Sky” cars. The NP placed six tables in the dome each seating four facing one another. Since the original dome seating had been for 24 this never reduced the seating. A Buffet replaced two of the duplex single rooms beneath the dome. Apparently the Lounge car attendants in these cars suffered from no lack of exercise, having to climb the two stairs from beneath the dome to the cars main level and the five stairs from the main level of the dome just to look after their passenger orders. The five cars rebuilt were renumbered 375-379 and CB&Q 380, they were originally numbered 307, 308, 311, 312, and 314, and CB&Q 304 respectively. The cars built as 24-seat Vista Dome 4-roomettes, 4-double bedroom with 4 duplex single rooms beneath the dome. As reconstructed to Lounge in the sky Vista dome sleeping cars they featured the new dome seating at tables, 4- Double Bedrooms, and two Duplex single rooms beneath the dome with a buffet occupying the space formerly occupied by the other two duplex single rooms. These cars pleased the first class clientele as know more complaints were received at NP headquarters.
All cars passed to BN ownership after the merger in 1970 and all of the domes went on to many years of service in Amtrak trains.

Streamlined Sleeping Cars

The NP was the first of the Northwest transcontinental Railways and as such the population centers of the west grew along its lines, first attracting home-steaders and miners to build new towns and later cities. Later the NP would attract other travelers between the Twin Cities and Pacific Northwest. The oldest name train to the Pacific Northwest was the NP NORTH COAST LIMITED originally a deluxe all sleeping car train that later had coaches added.
The NP purchased their first lightweight streamlined cars following WW II to equip the NORTH COAST LIMITED. The streamlined NORTH COAST LIMITED was the last of the premier trains to the northwest to receive lightweight streamlined consists. There was no particular date that the NORTH COAST LIMITED became a streamlined train as it sort of evolved into a streamliner over a period of time in 1946-47. As each new car arrived in St. Paul from Pullman Standard it was given a final inspection and any final set up required. It would then be trainlined into the first eastbound consist needing that type of car where the CB&Q would set up the car for the westbound departure from Chicago. The new NORTH COAST LIMITED train sets were powered by an A-B-B set of EMD F3 diesels between St. Paul and Seattle initially later they would be changed to A-B-A sets as they did not require turning at terminals. Each consist of the NORTH COAST LIMITED was eleven cars between Chicago and Pasco and nine cars between Pasco and Seattle. The two cars set out at Pasco a coach and sleeper were forwarded to Portland by the SP&S. The CB&Q owned one complete consist of the NORTH COAST LIMIED and the sleeping cars owned by that road are identified as such. The SP&S owned a single NORTH COAST LIMITED coach and sleeping car and they are identified as well. Originally all Sleeping cars were named only but the NP began replacing the names with numbers beginning in 1953 as each car was shopped for repainting into the new Color scheme designed by Raymond Loewy for the NORTH COAST LIMITED and all NP passenger trains.

The NP next purchased a pair of odd sleeping cars that were delivered painted in SP CASCADE colors for operation in that train. The reason these two sleeping cars were odd was they were the only 10-6 sleeping cars ever owned by the NP. When the new stream-lined all room all Pullman CASCADES entered service August 13, 1950 between Oakland and Portland four of the sleeping cars in each consist were through cars to Seattle the reason the NP owned a pair of CASCADE sleeping cars. Each mornings CASCADE arriving in Portland had the Blunt ended 10-6 set out. The four sleeping cars ahead a 22 Roomette, two 10-6 sleeping cars and a 4 Compartment 4 Double Bedroom 2 Drawing Room Sleeping cars were added to the UP pool train just ahead of that trains Astra Dome Lounge Observation for forwarding to Seattle. Upon arrival at Union Station Seattle the four CASCADE sleeping cars were transferred to the NP under the 4th avenue viaduct between Union Station and King St. station by a NP switcher. The cars were then sat in the joint NP-GN Holgate St. Coach yard until the NP train from Portland arrived. After unloading passengers at King St. Station the four CASCADE sleeping cars were added to the rear of the consist and the entire train was then wyed about four miles south of King St. Station and returned to the Coach yard for cleaning and a trip through the washer. The next morning the train was backed into King St. Station with the four SP CASCADE sleeping cars on the rear for loading. The NP pool train arrived in Portland just a short while before the scheduled departure of the SP CASCADE for Oakland. A Portland Terminal switcher would already have the blunt end 10-6 Sleeping car uncoupled awaiting the four sleeping cars from Seattle. As soon as the NP pool train came to a halt the switcher was coupling the Blunt End 10-6 to the through sleeping cars and would then add those cars to the rear of that days south bound CASCADE to Oakland.
When through CASCADE sleeping car service ended in January 9, 1966 the two NP 10-6 sleeping cars were returned to that road. They were then repainted NP colors and spent much of the next few years in charter service. After the BN merger the two cars were assigned to the Business fleet where they remained for many years.

The NP inaugurated a new Chicago - Seattle-Portland train the MAINSTREETER on November 16, 1952. Initially the MAINSTREETER was a diesel powered heavyweight train but later would become fully streamlined after 1955. This train replaced the ALASKAN a slower train. At the same time the NORTH COAST LIMITED was speeded up to match the timekeeping of the GN EMPIRE BUILDER and Milwaukee Road OLYMPIAN HIAWATHA. The NP NORTH COAST LIMITED then required only five sets of equipment instead of six.
Beginning in November 1953 the NP began cycling the sleeping cars and Sleeper Lounge Observations of the NORTH COAST LIMITED through the shops for repainting into the new Raymond Loewy two tone green with white separation stripe paint scheme. At the same time the lounge areas of the Sleeper Lounge Observations were remodeled completely as well. As each car was completed it was assigned a number replacing the car names. The NP would no longer have named sleeping cars. The sleeping cars were shopped, repainted and numbered in the following order.

The Union Pacific introduced domes to the Pacific Northwest in September 1950 when the former Train of Tomorrow cars entered service in the UP pool train round trip daily between Portland and Seattle. In December 1952 the Milwaukee Road introduced Super domes to the OLYMPIAN HIAWATHA serving as a 28 seat Cafe lounge car as well as seating 68 in the dome level.
The introduction of the domes seemed to impact the NORTH COAST LIMITED very little at first but when the NORTH COAST LIMITED schedule was speeded up it became apparent that domes would be the next logical step for the NP's finest streamliner. In August 1954 new Budd built Vista-Dome leg rest Coaches were delivered by Budd for assignment to the NORTH COAST LIMITED enough for two per consist. And as if that wasn't enough ten new Vista dome Sleeping cars were delivered for the NORTH COAST LIMITED between September and November 1954 just in time for the Christmas rush. At the same time six new 6 Roomette 8 Duplex Roomette 4 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars were delivered to the NP by Pullman Standard. The new Sleeping cars replaced the older sleeping cars in the NORTH COAST LIMITED and many of the older 48 revenue seat Leg Rest Coaches and Sleeping cars from the 1946-47 order were than assigned to the MAINSTREETER. The Vista-Dome Sleeping cars were not the first in the northwest but they would be the only ones operated as sleeping cars in the Pacific Northwest. The UP operated the Train of Tomorrow DREAM CLOUD between Portland and Seattle but as a parlor car only.
Beginning in the winter 1959-60 season the NP leased through Pullman five of the Vista Dome sleeping cars to other railroads. The IC that first year leased four two for the PANAMA LIMITED and two for the CITY OF MIAMI consists. The fifth car was leased by the PRR for one SOUTH WIND consist. The IC repainted the NP cars into their Chocolate, Orange, and yellow scheme to match the rest of the trains. The PRR leased car remained painted in the NP scheme of two tone green. It must have really been a clash with the PRR Tuscan cars. In the spring when the cars were returned to the NP they were freshly repainted. After that first winter the IC only leased two of the Vista Dome Sleeping cars from the NP for operation in the CITY OF MIAMI. IC management felt that due to the fast overnight schedule of the PANAMA LIMITEDS Vista domes were not really necessary. The PRR continued to lease a Vista-Dome Sleeping car for the SOUTH WIND for several more winters from the NP. Apparently the NP sent those Vista Dome sleeping cars needing repainting the most to the IC each winter so they got back freshly painted cars each spring.

One additional Vista Dome sleeping car was delivered to the Northern Pacific in December 1957 by the Budd Company for assignment to the NORTH COAST LIMITED to be used as a spare. This car 314 was identical to the earlier cars of this type.

The NORTH COAST LIMITED received 24 Single Room 8 Double Room Slumbercoaches in December 1959 one per consist. They were easily spotted in the consist as they were the only stainless steel finished cars in the consists. They were trainlined directly behind the RPO Crew Dormitory car ahead of the Coaches. The initial order was for four Slumbercoaches all numbered and named for Scottish LOCHS. The Scottish LOCH names were selected implying thrift. Since five Slumbercoaches were necessary for the NORTH COAST LIMITED an arrangement was worked out with the Burlington. Where an arriving Slumbercoach from the DENVER ZEPHYR in Chicago would depart in that days westbound NORTH COAST LIMITED while the arriving NORTH COAST LIMITED from the west gave up its Slumbercoach to that days departing westbound DENVER ZEPHYR. Here was the car the NP had been looking for it gave Coach passengers there own private room with bed and bathroom for Coach fare plus a nightly room charge. No longer was it necessary for coach passengers to upgrade their ticket to first class, then pay an additional amount for the sleeping accommodation. Even though the rooms were small they were adequate and q welcome addition to those passengers on limited means. The addition of the Slumbercoaches certainly gave the NORTH COAST LIMITED a boost in revenue.

The Budd Company had leased eight Slumbercoaches to other roads in 1959 and when they returned from lease the NP purchased all eight in 1964. One was leased by the MP who operated it with the three leased by the B&O in a joint NATIONAL LIMITED / TEXAS EAGLE service between Washington D.C. and San Antonio. The four NYC cars were operated between New York and Chicago two per consist in the TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED. The additional Slumbercoaches were assigned to the MAINSTREETER as well as the NORTH COAST LIMITED in fact they became the only sleeping car carried by the MAINSTREETER.

Two of the above Slumbercoaches 335 LOCH ARKAIG and 336 LOCH AWE were transferred to CB&Q ownership in March 1965 with no change of numbers or names.
Between June and November 1965 the NP converted five sleeping cars to Crew Dormitory Sleeping cars for assignment to the NORTH COAST LIMITED since the mail contract for this train had been canceled by the Post Office. The five sleeping cars converted were 352,361, 350, 351, and 359; they received new numbers 440-444 respectively.
In December 1966 the NP withdrew the Sleeper Lounge Observations from the NORTH COAST LIMITED and sold all four owned by the NP. The CB&Q soon sold their car as well.
The NP soon began receiving complaints from Sleeping cars passengers about the loss of their lounge. In order to appease the Sleeping car passengers of the NORTH COAST LIMITED the NP converted six of their Vista Dome Sleeping cars to Vista Dome Sleeper Cocktail Lounge In The Sky cars. Seating remained the same in the dome level at 24 except the seats faced each other in pairs with a table separating every four. Two of the Duplex Single Rooms beneath the dome were converted to a Buffet to serve the passengers in the Cocktail Lounge in the Sky. The conversion work on the six dome cars took place between March - May 1967 with the following cars converted and renumbered.
