PENNSYLVANIA
(PRR)
Streamlined Dining & Lounge Cars
by Al

Known as the standard railroad of the world for many years and particularly true in the heavyweight era of passenger trains the PRR nonetheless placed some of America’s finest streamliners in service as well.
The Pennsylvania railroads finest was the BROADWAY LIMITED between Chicago and New York. Always operated with the finest Pullmans and never a coach during the heavyweight era. Only the best dining cars and lounge cars were assigned to this fine train.
Rival NYC fielded the TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED in direct competition to the BROADWAY LIMITED and by 1937 the time to streamline these fine trains at last came. Both railroads chose the architects for their fine streamliners and work began at the Pullman Standard plant on the head end, sleeping, lounge and dining cars for the NYC. For rival PRR Pullman Standard constructed sleeping and lounge cars, and the railroad itself provided the dining and head end cars for the new BROADWAY LIMITED.
Famed industrial designer and architect Raymond Loewy was the man chosen for not only the BROADWAY LIMITED but also the entire PRR fleet of modernism introduced in 1938. Besides the BROADWAY LIMITED the PRR was modernizing three other trains at the same time the LIBERTY LIMITED between Washington, D.C. and Chicago, the equal of the BROADWAY LIMITED on this route except it also carried coach passengers. The GENERAL between New York and Chicago another train whose schedule was only slightly slower than the BROADWAY LIMITEDS.
The last of the fleet of modernism trains was the SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS a train that operated between its namesake city in the west and New York City in the east. The BROADWAY LIMITED, LIBERTY LIMITED and GENERAL required but two sets of equipment to maintain nightly service in each direction. Due to the greater distance of the SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS route this train required three sets of equipment. The BROADWAY LIMITED was the only All-Pullman, All-Room extra fare train of the four. All three of the other trains carried coaches. In April 1942 the GENERAL, LIBERTY LIMITED and SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS became all Pullman trains dropping coaches from the three trains for at least the duration of WW II.
The PRR Altoona shops shopped two heavyweight dining cars 4420 and 4423 for modernizing and completely new interiors for assignment to the BROADWAY LIMITED. The four cars emerged from the shops in May 1938 just in time for the June 15, 1938 inaugural of the new streamlined BROADWAY LIMITED and the other three fleet of modernism trains. Standard dining cars of the era normally featured 36-seats at six tables for four along one side and six tables for two along the other side. The two rebuilt dining cars out shopped by Altoona were different beginning at one end there was the standard kitchen along the left side of the car with a new pantry area next on the same side. On the right hand side next was two tables for two a lounge type seating area for two next followed by two tables for four and then a lengthwise bar occupied the final seven feet of the right side. On the left side from the pantry area was located two tables for four a lounge type seating area for two followed by two tables for two, and finally was a small lounge facing the bar with seating for two passengers at two small cocktail tables. This lounge was considered a waiting area for passengers waiting to be seated in the dining area. The total seating capacity of the BROADWAY LIMITED dining cars was only 28 or 30 if one counted the two lounge seats. Standard heavyweight 36-seat dining cars were always held in reserve at Chicago and New York just in case one the BROADWAY LIMITED dining cars were unable to make a trip.
The other feature cars of the new streamlined BROADWAY LIMITEDS were Barber Shop, Secretary room, 2-Double Bedroom Bar 38-seat lounge cars HARBOR POINT and HARBOR SPRINGS. These two cars were rebuilt in April 1943 to 5-Double Bedroom Buffet lounge cars. This was due to wartime restrictions on lounge cars if they did not have a certain amount of sleeping space. With the addition of three double bedrooms replacing the barbershop and secretary’s room they meant the requirement for sleeping car space and remained in service throughout the war.
The last car in each BROADWAY LIMITED was a beautiful round end Observation with 1-Double Bedroom 2-Master Rooms Buffet and 25-seat Lounge Observation. There was four of these cars constructed FEDERAL VIEW, METROPOLITAN VIEW, SKYLINE VIEW and WASHINGTON VIEW. The FEDERAL VIEW and WASHINGTON VIEW carried the tail-sign for the LIBERTY LIMITED and METROPOLITAN VIEW and SKYLINE VIEW carried the tail-sign for the BROADWAY LIMITED consists. In January 1957 the SKYLINE VIEW and WASHINGTON VIEW were assigned to parlor car service and assigned numbers 7150 and 7151. By 1962 both had been withdrawn from parlor car service and sold to Mexico. The FEDERAL VIEW and METROPOLITAN VIEW both were sold to Mexico in the early 1960’s.

Other streamlined feature cars built in 1938 for the LIBERTY LIMITED were a pair of Budd built streamlined dining cars delivered in December 1937 and March 1938. These two cars were experimental as far as the PRR was concerned but they assigned them to the LIBERTY LIMITED instead. Car 4500 was delivered in December 1937 and operated in several PRR trains before the new LIBERTY LIMITEDS entered service. The seating in this car was arranged on the one side with two tables for four followed by a settee type seating arrangement for six with the back to the windows followed by another table seating area with two tables for four for a total seating capacity along the right side for 22 at the far end of the right side was a bar. Along the left side there was a settee type seating area for 6 followed by two tables for four and then another settee area for six. This gave the 4500 a total seating capacity of 42. The car was rebuilt to a standard 48-seat dining car in 1953, and finally retired and scrapped in 1961. The car spent most of its operational life in pool service.
The 4501 delivered in March 1938 were arranged in a different manner with both sides identically arranged except for the right side having a bar at the far end from the Kitchen and pantry area. Each side seated 22 arranged with two tables for four a settee for six and again two tables for four. This gave the 4501 a seating capacity of 44. After assignment to the LIBERTY LIMITED the car was assigned to the dining car pool and was rebuilt to a standard 48-seat dining car in 1953 and like 4500 was retired and scrapped in 1961.

Pullman Standard delivered nine COLONIAL series cars in May 1938 for assignment to the other three fleet of modernism trains. These cars featured 3-double bedrooms 1-drawing room a 1/4 round bar and 26-seat lounge. The GENERAL operated with two COLONIAL series cars in each consist as the GENERAL operated without a Sleeper Lounge Observation The SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS ad LIBERTY LIMITED operated with Sleeper Lounge Observations so only carries one COLONIAL series in each consist.

In March 1942 JACK’S NARROWS was renamed WAKE ISLAND for the brave defenders of the Pacific Island that fell to Japanese forces early in WW II. In January 1949 WAKE ISLAND was renamed once more this time SAMUEL VAUGHAN MERRICK.
The other two NARROWS series sleeper Lounge observations were renamed in February 1949 JUNIATA NARROWS was renamed WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN PATTERSON and LEWISTOWN NARROWS was renamed JOHN EDGAR THOMSON. The SAMUEL VAUGHAN MERRICK was assigned to one of the CITY OF LOS ANGELES consists beginning in March 1952 wearing streamliner colors while in this service. With the arrival on the UP of Dome Lounge Observations in March 1955, the SAMUEL VAUGHAN MERRICK was returned to the PRR.
Two of the cars WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN PATTERSON and SAMUEL VAUGHAN MERRICK were designated parlor cars in April 1957 and received the numbers 7152 and 7153 at that time; by 1962 both cars had been retired and sold to Mexico.
In addition a large number of heavyweight Pullmans were streamlined for service in other PRR trains, and among this list were the following Pullman cars that included feature cars as follows.

The PRR introduced a new all –coach streamliner between New York and Chicago beginning July 28, 1939 named the TRAIL BLAZER. The PRR Altoona shops streamlined the entire trains from older heavyweight cars. Each of the two consists of the TRAIL BLAZER had four feature cars for the use of the coach passengers. All of the cars for the TRAIL BLAZER were streamlined using old heavyweight coaches except for the twin unit dining cars in which used old heavyweight single unit dining cars. The first car in each consist of the TRAIL BLAZER was a Baggage Buffet 27- seat Lounge car 4931 or 4950 out shopped by Altoona shops in July 1939 just in time for the new trains inaugural. Mid-train in the TRAIL BLAZERS was a 19-crew Dormitory Kitchen car followed by a 68-seat dining room car. These cars operated as a set and were semi permanently coupled together using a drawbar. In one consist Dormitory –Kitchen car 8019 and Dining room car 8020 were paired and in the other TRAIL BLAZER consist Dormitory – Kitchen car 8021 and dining room car 8022 operated paired these cars were completed by Altoona shops in early July 1939.
Bringing up the rear of the TRAIL BLAZERS were Buffet Observation cars rebuilt and streamlined using old heavyweight coaches. For the TRAIL BLAZER these cars were 1120 rebuilt from old heavyweight coach 7777 and 1121 rebuilt from heavyweight coach 8930. The interiors of these cars featured a Buffet with 16-seat dinette and 35 lounge seats in the observation end. These cars along with the coaches were ready for service just in time for the July startup of the new train.
On December 19, 1940 the PRR inaugurated a new seven car all coach streamliner from Budd named the SOUTH WIND between Chicago and Miami operating via the PRR between Chicago and Louisville over its own lines, the L&N to Montgomery, ACL to Jacksonville and FEC to Miami. Two other railroads introduced seven car coach streamliners between Chicago and Miami at the same time the FEC and IC, all operated by different routes between Chicago and Jacksonville. Between the three trains they provided daily service between end points. The new SOUTH WIND had two feature cars a 48-seat dining car numbered 4518 and a Buffet 16-seat dinette 35-seat Lounge Observation numbered 1126.

Just a few months after the SOUTH WIND entered service the PRR Altoona shops were busy rebuilding additional cars for another coach streamliner the JEFFERSONIAN that entered service April 27, 1941 between New York and St. Louis. The new JEFFERSONIAN required three sets of equipment for daily service. Once again the PRR selected twin unit dining cars for this train 19-crew dormitory – kitchen units coupled to 68-seat dining room cars. The one train set operated with Dormitory –Kitchen 8027 and Dining room car 8028, another operated with Dormitory – Kitchen 8029 and Dining room car 8030, and the last set operated with Dormitory – Kitchen 8031 and Dining room car 8032. There were four Buffet Lounge Observations built for the JEFFERSONIAN trains, this was because a Washington section of the train operated between Washington and Harrisburg where it joined the main train. The fourth Buffet Lounge Observation operated only between Harrisburg and Washington.
The four Buffet 16-seat dinette 35-seat lounge observations were as follows:

1122 rebuilt from coach 1706

1123 rebuilt from coach 1795

1124 rebuilt from coach 1667

1125 rebuilt from coach 1833

Altoona shops turned out additional streamlined feature cars before WW II again rebuilt from heavyweights. The exact trains these additional cars were built for is unknown, as they seemed to be used everywhere and in whatever train was in need of this type car.
In June 1941 two Buffet 16-seat dinette 35-seat lounge observations were released for service by Altoona shops they were numbered 1127 and 1128.
In August 1941 three Baggage 12-crew dormitory Buffet 16 seat lounge cars were completed for the JEFFERSONIAN numbers 6701 – 6703. These cars and new streamlined single unit dining cars replaced the twin unit dining cars of the JEFFERSONIAN, as passenger loads on these trains was not as great as that of the TRAIL BLAZERS.
Altoona shops completed three Baggage 12-Crew Dormitory Buffet 16 seat Lounge cars numbers 6704 – 6706 in March 1942.
Rushed to completion that same month were three Buffet 16-seat Dinette 35-seat Lounge Observations that entered service in the corridor designated as Buffet 16-seat dinette 35-seat Parlor observations. These cars were numbered 1129 – 1131.
Due to a shortage of dining cars on the PRR the government relaxed their wartime restrictions long enough for Altoona shops to streamline five twin unit dining car sets. Three of the cars were 19-seat Crew Dormitory – Kitchen cars 8027, 8029, and 8031. Car number 8033 and 8035 were 12 – seat Lunch Counter – Kitchen cars built for Northeast corridor service. The five 68-seat dining room cars with 4-seat waiting area were numbers 8028, 8030, 8032, 8034 and 8036. These cars were all completed in June 1943 and were immediately pressed into wartime service.
Following the war the PRR was committed to upgrading many of the prewar streamliners and in many cases complete new trains replaced prewar streamliners, and this in turn gave more streamlined cars to other trains that had previously had few if any streamlined cars. New car deliveries in 1948 and 1949 completely reequipped the BROADWAY LIMITED, LIBERTY LIMITED, SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS, GENERAL, TRAIL BLAZER, and JEFFERSONIAN. The latter two trains postwar new equipment was built by the railroads own Altoona shops. This was their first new streamlined cars as all prewar streamlined cars turned out by Altoona shops had been rebuilds using old heavyweight cars. First out of the Altoona shops seventy 44-seat long distance coaches numbers 4100 – 4169. These cars would be assigned to the postwar TRAIL BLAZER and JEFFERSONIAN later many of the east-west trains received these cars. Altoona shops completed these cars between December 1946 and July 1949.
The first postwar feature cars built by Altoona Shops was five Baggage-Bar 27-seat Lounge cars 6695-6699. These cars were built in Altoona shops in September – October 1947. The five cars were assigned to the postwar TRAIL BLAZER and JEFFERSONIAN. Four of the cars were retired and scrapped in 1961, all except 6696, which was rebuilt to a 65’ Railway Post office car and renumbered 6599 in 1965.

Next Altoona shops built the five postwar Buffet 53-seat lounge cars with the blunt end for the TRAIL BLAZER and JEFFERSONIAN. These cars numbers 1132 – 1136 were built with a taper blunt end that was unique to all PRR postwar Observations. One car 1135 was retired in 1961 and sold to a private owner, the other four were retired and scrapped in 1967.

American Car & Foundry delivered three of the most interesting cars ever built in February – March 1948 for the JEFFERSONIAN. These cars were the Recreation cars built for the JEFFERSONIAN. Each car beginning at the full vestibule end featured a six-seat mini-theater for newsreels, a pinball machine, and sunken bar lounge with seating for 24. Next was a small nursery for children, and finally a reading and game room for 12. All three Recreation cars were transferred to the PENN TEXAS in 1952. The Pinball machine mini – theater and Nursery was removed from all three cars in 1955 and they continued in PENN TEXAS service. In 1964 all three were sold to the Holiday on Ice shows where they were gutted and used as tunnel cars for the props used in the ice shows.

Finally between October and December 1948 Altoona shops delivered the five-twin unit dining sets for the TRAIL BLAZER and JEFFERSONIAN. These cars in the odd numbered units were built with 19-crew dormitory spaces and the Kitchen. The crew dormitory space was for the dining car crew and lounge car attendants in three tier bunks for eighteen. The separate private bedroom was for the Dining car steward. The even numbered cars paired with these Crew Dormitory – Kitchen units seated 68 at 16 tables for four and 2 tables for two. In addition there was a waiting area that seated four. Two sets were retired and scrapped in 1961 4590-4591 and 4598-4599, two other sets followed in retirement and scrapping in 1967 4594-4595 and 4596-4597. In 1968 the final set of Altoona built twin unit dining car sets was retired and scrapped 4592-4593.

The pride of the PRR received new sleeping cars and four feature cars between December 1948 and February 1949 and the all-new postwar BROADWAY LIMITED began operating March 15, 1949. The closest rival the TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED began operating with new postwar equipment on September 15, 1948.
In December 1948 Pullman Standard delivered the two HARBOR series lounge cars for the postwar BROADWAY LIMITED. These cars had 3-Double Bedrooms, Barber shop with adjoining shower, Secretary’s room, and Buffet 20-seat Lounge cars. In January 1956 HARBOR COVE was rebuilt to 5-double bedroom buffet 20-seat lounge car. The HARBOR REST underwent the same rebuilding in February 1957 in both cars a phone room was installed between two of the bedrooms. The two cars were retired in 1971 and eventually scrapped.

From what I have been able to tell from infrormation I have on the UP they operated observations until the introduction of the dome lounge observations on the CITY OF LOS ANGELES. But they were not always UP owned. The CITY OF LOS ANGELES often operated with offline observations such as one of the NEW ROYAL PALM Sleeper Lounge Observation ROYAL CREST (NYC owned) that was destroyed while on the CITY OF LOS ANGELES in Wyoming by a trailing CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO consist within a couple of years of being built for the Southern train. This accident also destroyed a couple of new UP owned sleeping cars AMERICAN BORDER and PACIFIC EMPIRE. Hope this helps.

Can somebody tell me when UP dropped round-end observations on the City of Los Angeles? Was it before the 1955 arrival of the Dome-Lounge observations?

Streamlined Sleeping Cars
by Al

The PRR was one of the largest operators of lightweight stream-lined sleeping cars and one of the first to buy large numbers of these cars. Unlike the NYC who streamlined their TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED in 1938 the PRR not only streamlined the BROADWAY LIMITED but purchased additional streamlined sleeping cars for operation in other PRR trains. Even though the other trains were not fully equipped with streamlined sleeping cars the PRR had Pullman streamline a number of heavyweight sleeping cars for these trains as well They became the Fleet of Modernism as the PRR referred to them. The trains that belonged to the fleet of Modernism were the BROADWAY LIMITED between New York and Chicago, LIBERTY LIMITED between Washington and Chicago, GENERAL between New York and Chicago and the SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS between New York and St. Louis. The latter train carried connecting cars to and from Washington meeting the main body of the SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS at Harrisburg. Only the BROADWAY LIMITED of the four trains was all Pullman at that time. The other three would soon become All Pullman trains once again as the depression's effects gradually eased. All four of these trains had originated as heavyweight trains and all four became the fleet of Modernism on June 15, 1938.
First of the new trains to depart New York on that date was the GENERAL on its fast 17 hour 10 minute race to Chicago. The GENERAL was pulled between New York and Harrisburg by the GG-1 electric locomotives. West of Harrisburg the famous PRR K-4 Pacific Locomotives assumed the task. The Sleeping car section of the two GENERAL consists was comprised of the following cars.

Since the PRR was not interested in new lightweight stream-lined sleeping cars with Sections this was one of the reasons so many PRR overnight trains carried streamlined heavy-weights and heavyweights with sections. The main reason for this was the Government would only reimburse for travel in a lower berth at that time. The PRR like most railroads with service out of Washington received a great deal of Government business and was not about to lose any of it because they no longer carried Sleeping cars with sections.
Pleased with the new lightweight stream-lined sleeping cars received in 1938 the PRR immediately placed orders for additional new sleeping cars with eighteen CITY 18 roomette sleeping cars arriving in December 1938 just in time for the Christmas-New years rush.

Additional new sleeping cars for operation in such trains as the PITTSBURGER and the other major overnight trains were ordered in 1938. The first new sleeping car orders began arriving in June 1939 and they were assigned to a general sleeping car pool to be assigned to the east west lines mostly between New York and Chicago but also trains between Pittsburgh - Chicago, New York - Cincinnati, Washington - Detroit and other routes. By the time the last of the prewar lightweight streamlined cars were delivered to the PRR between 1938 - 1940 they were operating 142 lightweight streamlined sleeping cars and another 60 streamlined heavy-weight sleeping cars for a total of 202. The 1939 cars listed below a majority of them went to the PITTSBURGHER the rest to general service.

How did the total of 202 lightweight and streamlined heavyweight sleeping cars compare to the other railroads streamlined sleeping car fleet at the beginning of WW II? The NYC matched the PRR with 142 lightweight stream-lined cars but they had no streamlined heavyweight sleeping cars. How did the PRR and NYC compare to the other railroads with streamlined sleeping cars at the beginning of WW II?

PRR 200, NYC 142, UP 97, AT&SF 92, SP 59, B&O 50, CRI&P 40, IC 20, C&NW 17, CB&Q 14, GM&O 5, KCS 5, ERIE 4, MP 4, C&S 3, FW&D 3, and D&RGW 2.

PRR Sleeper Lounge Observation JACK'S NARROWS built for the SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS was renamed WAKE ISLAND in March 1942 for the American defenders of that small Pacific Island eventually overwhelmed by Japanese forces.
In April 1943 Pullman rebuilt the interiors of BROADWAY LIMITED 2 Double Bedroom Secretary room Barber Shop Shower Bar 28 Seat lounge Cars HARBOR POINT and HARBOR SPRINGS. They were rebuilt to 5 Double Bedroom Buffet 26 seat Lounge cars. This work was done at the request of the war department as cars with only two sleeping car spaces were either to be rebuilt with additional revenue space or stored for the duration of the war. The PRR chose the former course of action while rival NYC stored several cars for the duration.
All prewar lightweight streamlined sleeping cars built for the PRR were from a single manufacturer Pullman Standard. This would not be the case following WW II as the PRR would purchase streamlined sleeping cars from all three major manufacturers American Car & Foundry, Budd Company, and Pullman Standard.
Deliveries of postwar lightweight streamlined sleeping cars began in April 1948 and the last PRR owned lightweight streamlined sleeping car was delivered in October 1950.
But before any of the new sleeping cars arrived an event took place that many said would never come to pass, that was through transcontinental sleeping cars service. The PRR was one of the major proponents of this service and operated the greatest number of through sleeping car routes. Besides the PRR in the east the NYC and B&O also offered through sleeping car services. The railroads in the west that took part in offering through car services were the C&NW-UP-SP, CB&Q-D&RGW-WP, CRI&P-SP, and AT&SF between Chicago and the West Coast carrying through sleeping cars originating in New York, and Washington.
The first of these services began March 31, 1946 using the PRR BROADWAY and Santa Fe CHIEF. The PRR assigned three IMPERIAL series cars IMPERIAL PARK, IMPERIAL PASS and IMPERIAL POINT to the through service, all were painted two tone gray for transcontinental service. The Santa Fe assigned HUALPAI, NASLINI, TCHIREGE, and TSANKAWI. This service became even more exclusive later when the Santa Fe switched the through cars from the CHIEF to the SUPER CHIEF. Beginning in February 1954 the Santa Fe assigned six new REGAL series 4 Compartment 4 Double Bedroom 2 drawing room cars to the service replacing both the older prewar Santa Fe and PRR cars as through cars. The six REGAL series cars initially assigned were REGAL CREST, REGAL LANE, REGAL LARK, REGAL MANOR, REGAL PASS and REGAL SPA.
Another service began March 31, 1946 was the PRR - CNW-UP route to Los Angeles using the PRR GOLDEN ARROW Westbound MAHATTAN LIMITED Eastbound and the LOS ANGELES LIMITED in both directions west of Chicago. Initially operated with heavyweight VILLA and POPLAR series cars they were replaced by 10-6 sleepers in February 1950. The cars were than assigned to the UP CITY OF LOS ANGELES west of Chicago. The UP 10-6 Sleeping cars assigned were PACIFIC COVE, PACIFIC COVE, PACIFIC GARDEN, PACIFIC HEIGHTS, and PACIFIC HILLS. For there part the PRR assigned STONEY RAPIDS and TIPPECANOE RAPIDS to the through service painting both cars in UP Yellow.
On the same startup date March 31, 1946 the PRR also began operating a 12-1 heavyweight from Washington to Los Angeles as well, this car ran originally in the ADMIRAL Westbound and RAINBOW Eastbound. Later the PRR switched the car to the LIBERTY LIMITED Westbound and PENNSYLVANIA LIMITED but this car never seemed to attract the passenger loading of other through cars and was discontinued in 1949.
The last through service begun on March 31, 1946 was the one using the OVERLAND west of Chicago to San Francisco. This service alternated days between the NYC and PRR east of Chicago. Initially the service was assigned heavy-weight 10 Section 1 Drawing Room 2 Compartment cars. Beginning March 1, 1950 the service was assigned 10-6 Sleeping cars. The NYC and PRR cars assigned were painted two-tone gray to match the OVERLAND. The NYC car assigned was PASSAIC RIVER and the PRR car was BUFFALO RAPIDS. The SP assigned 9037 and 9039. The three UP cars assigned were painted UP colors they were PACIFIC LODGE, PACIFIC UNION, and PACIFIC WATERS.
One day after the previously mentioned services began another San Francisco routing began using the NYC and PRR on alternate days east of Chicago and the CB&Q-D&RGW-WP route west of Chicago. Initially this service was provided using 10 Section 1 Drawing Room 2 Compartment heavyweight sleeping cars. In March 1949 the western service was streamlined using a train named the VISTA-DOME CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR? For their part the PRR purchased a single 10-6 sleeping car to match the other CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR cars. This car was named PRR SILVER RAPIDS. In order to provide daily through car service seven 10-6 sleeping cars were required. The CB&Q, WP and D&RGW provided two each. One of the D&RGW cars was leased to the NYC who owned no CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR cars to fulfill their obligation for one car for through service. The other cars assigned initially were CB&Q SILVER POINT and SILVER SHORE, WP SILVER BAY and SILVER SURF, and D&RGW SILVER CREEK and SILVER GLACIER.
The last through train service to the West Coast by way of Chicago began June 2, 1946 between Los Angeles and Chicago via the GOLDEN STATE operated by the CRI&P and SP. Each of the three operating roads assigned two 4-4-2 prewar streamlined sleeping cars to the service. For their part the PRR assigned IMPERIAL RANGE and IMPERIAL TERRACE. The SP assigned GOLDEN CAVERN and GOLDEN TERRACE trail while Rock Island assigned GOLDEN DIAL and GOLDEN FLEECE. In 1948 the new colors of the GOLDEN STATE became Red and Silver. The two PRR cars were repainted to match the GOLDEN STATE cars.
Another gateway to the west was opened in 1946 through St. Louis. But through service by way of St. Louis extended to Texas and Oklahoma primarily with one heavyweight car operating through to Mexico City by the MP. This service was discontinued when the MP streamlined their trains.
On July 7, 1946 the PRR and MP began joint service between New York and Houston-Galveston, New York and San Antonio, New York and El Paso, New York and Dallas, Washington and Fort Worth, and Washington and Houston. The PRR assigned a number of CASCADE series cars to these routes while other routes were initially operated with 8 Section 5 Double Bedroom, and 10 Section 1 Drawing Room 2 Compartment heavyweight sleeping cars. In June 1948 the PRR repainted eleven CASCADE series 10 Roomette 5 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars into the Blue and Gray of the MP for through service to Texas points. The eleven CASCADE series cars were:

On that same date July 7, 1946 the PRR began joint service with the SL-SF and KATY as well. A through New York - San Antonio 8 Section 5 Double Bedroom car began running via the TEXAS SPECIAL. Later in May 1948 the new 14-4 Sleeping cars would take over. For there part the PRR assigned CASCADE MEADOW and CASCADE RANGE to the service and painted them to match the other TEXAS SPECIAL cars complete with shadow-line striping to simulate fluted stainless steel. In October 1950 the CASCADE series cars CASCADE MEADOW and CASCADE RANGE were replaced by PRR RAPIDS series 10-6 sleeping cars SWATARA RAPIDS, and TIOGA RAPIDS. These cars remained painted Tuscan Red until 1953 when they were repainted to match the other TEXAS SPECIAL cars.
The TEXAS SPECIAL through service ended October 1, 1958.
Another service begun that July 7, 1946 was the through service to Oklahoma City via the METEOR. Initially operated with 10 Section 3 Double Bedroom Sleeping cars the service later received PRR CASCADE series cars CASCADE BRIM and CASCADE RAVINE while for their part the SL-SF assigned 14-4 sleeping cars. This service was cut back to Tulsa and discontinued altogether in 1949.
In October 1949 the PRR and L&N inaugurated through streamlined sleeping cars between New York and Louisville, Memphis, and Nashville. The cars operated east of Cincinnati over the PRR and switched to the L&N at that point. Both the L&N and PRR assigned 10-6 sleeping cars to these services with all cars painted PRR Tuscan red. New York - Memphis Service operated with PRR cars WILL RAPIDS, SHENANGO RAPIDS, SHERMAN RAPIDS and L&N KENTUCKY RIVER. New York-Louisville service was assigned PRR TUSCARORA RAPIDS, RARITAN RAPIDS and L&N GREEN RIVER.
New York - Nashville service was operated with PRR TOWANDA RAPIDS, TURTLE RAPIDS and L&N GREEN RAPIDS. New York - Nashville service was discontinued March 1, 1954. New York - Memphis service ended July 14, 1956 and New York - Louisville service ended April 27, 1958.
The first new postwar sleeping cars delivered to the PRR were seven 21 Roomette sleeping cars delivered by American Car & Foundry in April - May 1948. These cars were assigned to replace 18 Roomette sleeping cars operated in prewar trains.

Following WW II the decision was made that the SILVER METEOR would begin operating with lightweight streamlined sleeping cars as soon as possible. They would replace the heavyweight sleeping cars then operating in these otherwise all lightweight trains. At the same time two additional stream-liners would be instituted by the SAL the SILVER COMET between New York and Birmingham, and the SILVER STAR between New York and Florida. Each railroad that the trains operated over provided new lightweight sleeping cars for these services in proportion to the miles traveled over that road. The PRR provided six Budd built 10-6 sleeping cars to the SAL-RF&P-PRR pool of cars assigned to the SILVER METEOR etc.

The PRR assigned the postwar sleeping cars to BROADWAY LIMITED, SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS, CINCINNATI LIMITED, PITTSBURGHER, LIBERTY LIMITED, GENERAL, GOLDEN TRIANGLE, and ST. LOUISIAN. Many of the trains mentioned above operated with both postwar and prewar sleeping cars. There were still other overnight trains on the PRR that were assigned heavyweight sleeping cars right through the 1950's.
Beginning in 1950 the PRR assigned 8000 series numbers to Sleeping cars for accounting purposes but the cars never actually wore the numbers. The sleeping cars are divided by prewar sleeping cars and postwar sleeping cars just as the PRR numbering system divided them.

The PRR prewar sleeper lounge observation 8113 SAMUEL VAUGHN MERRICK was repainted UP colors in April 1952 and assigned to one of the CITY OF LOS ANGELES train sets. It remained operating in this capacity until April 1955 when the UP received the new Dome Lounge Observations. At that time the 8113 SAMUEL VAUGHN MERRICK was repainted PRR Tuscan red and returned to the PRR.
Beginning in August 1955 the PRR began a renaming program for certain sleeping cars. The names selected were for businessmen and moguls of industry with certain of the names having regional overtones. In 1956 a number of sleeping cars renamed were assigned to the overnight all Pullman PITTSBURGHER, those cars will be identified as such. Other cars were repainted PRR Tuscan Red before renaming in the case of the former EAGLE prefix 10-6 sleeping cars that had operated as through cars in cooperation with the MP and T&P in the PENN TEXAS/TEXAS EAGLE. After the service ended the PRR assigned the cars to general service and did not seem anxious to repaint them at that time. Several of the cars after renaming received a second new name within a couple of months of the first renaming. Those cars renamed for assignment to the PITTSBURGHER are designated as such by the name being underlined.

Pullman in Buffalo rebuilt BROADWAY LIMITED car 8428 HARBOR COVE to a 5 Double Bedroom Buffet 20 Seat lounge Car in January 1956. One month later the same rebuilding took place to 8429 HARBOR COVE. The two cars returned to the BROADWAY LIMITED after rebuilding.
The Union Pacific's CITY OF DENVER was already having a tough time competing with the CB&Q DENVER ZEPHYR when that road announced all new DENVER ZEPHYRS for the fall of 1956. The information of most concern about the new DENVER ZEPHYRS for the Union Pacific was the announcement of the Slumbercoach to these new trains. Here was overnight private room sleeping with bathroom facilities available for coach charge plus a small room charge, no longer would it be necessary to upgrade to first class.
The same month the new DENVER ZEPHYRS entered service the UP leased two 21 Roomette sleeping cars from the PRR 8245 BEDFORD INN and 8253 COATESVILLE INN and repainted them UP colors for Slumbercoach service in the CITY OF DENVER. The UP sold the space in these cars at the same rate as the CB&Q Slumbercoaches. The UP passengers were getting a real bargain when compared to the CB&Q Slumbercoaches. Unfortunately the Slumbercoach carried forty passengers per trip and the 21 Roomette sleeping cars just over half that number. Finally in December 1956 the CB&Q added a second Slumbercoach to the DENVER ZEPHYRS and UP could see that the 21 Roomette cars were no competition. The two cars were returned to the PRR in April 1957 after repainting in PRR Tuscan Red, another noble experiment gone by the wayside.
In 1957 the PRR removed several sleeper Lounge Observations from Pullman lease and designated the cars parlor cars for service in Northeast corridor trains with no change in the interiors taking place. All cars were assigned a 7100 series number for Parlor car operation.

In February 1959 10 Roomette 6 Double Bedroom Sleeping car 8337 ELBERTON was extensively damaged by a fire that originated in the cars electrical cabinet. At least four of the cars Roomettes were extensively damaged in the fire that occurred while operating in the SILVER METEOR. The PRR made a decision to rebuild the car as an eleven double bedroom car and transfer it to every other day service in one of the BROADWAY LIMITED consists. The 8337 ELBERTON was rebuilt by PRR shops in June 1959 with Bedrooms supplied by Budd in a knocked down kit. It was hoped the original six bedrooms the car was built with could be reused and all that would be necessary would be cleaning. After removal the damage to the entire car exterior was realized and the ventilation system needed to be completely replaced as well. It is doubtful if the car would have been rebuilt if the extent of the damage had been known before rebuilding commenced.
The PRR was finding less and less assignments suitable for the all Roomette sleeping cars from before the war and after the war. The PRR was never one for purchasing many streamlined dormitory cars other than the twin unit dining cars that featured one half of the twin combinations as Crew Dormitory - Kitchen space. Many railroads were to designate sleeping cars of differing types as Crew Dormitory cars by simply changing the number of the car to one that denoted a non-revenue producing car. The following is a list of those 18 Roomette sleeping cars designated as crew dormitory cars.

The two 21 Roomette sleeping cars assigned to Crew Dormitory duties were the two ISLAND series cars built to operate in ACL trains to Florida. Six IMPERIAL series cars meant that two of these deluxe accommodation sleeping cars were assigned to each of the three consists necessary for daily operation.

Many railroads in the early 1960's were finding passenger growth in Coaches but a steady decline in sleeping car space was taking place at the same time. Many streamlined sleeping cars were being retired and sold to the NdeM or in some cases scrapped. Other railroads chose to rebuild sleeping cars into coaches in order to accommodate the growth at less cost than buying new coaches. Few of these rebuilding occurred to prewar sleeping cars but significant numbers of postwar sleeping cars were rebuilt to coaches and other type cars. It was cheaper to rebuild good cars than scrap those cars for the little return on scrap metal in those days.
The PRR retired all fifty of the Budd built 21 Roomette INN series sleeping cars in August 1963 and sent them to Altoona for rebuilding. Forty-eight of the cars were rebuilt to 76 revenue seat coaches and two were rebuilt to 70 revenue seat coaches with a snack bar. They were then assigned 1500 series numbers 1500-1547 straight coaches and 1548, 1549 were the snack bar coaches. They were not rebuilt in any particular order and all were assigned to Corridor service trains.

In 1964 the PRR was again in need of additional parlor car space and the simplest solution was to designate eight postwar COLONIAL series 3 Double Bedroom 1 Drawing Room Buffet 27 seat Lounge cars by simply assigning 7100 series numbers. It is believed the doors to the Bedrooms and Drawing Room were removed while the cars were in this service as follows.

One year later in May 1965 the PRR designated an additional four FALLS series 6 Double Bedroom Bar 20 seat Lounge Cars to be Parlor cars assigning 7100 series numbers.

Streamlined Head End Cars
by Al

For the size or the PRR they owned surprisingly few lightweight streamlined head end cars. The PRR Altoona Shops modernized many heavyweight head end cars for service in the streamliners of the PRR but no actual streamlined head cars were ever built for the PRR’s most famous train the BROADWAY LIMITED. The PRR instead modernized heavyweights for the BROADWAY LIMITED and many other named trains.
The Altoona Shops of the PRR fully streamlined a number of heavyweight head end cars before and during WW II for their trains.
The first of the streamlined heavy-weight head end cars were a pair of Baggage Buffet 27 seat Lounge cars for the all coach TRAIL BLAZER between Chicago and New York overnight. The two cars 4931 and 4950 retained their original numbers after rebuilding to streamlined cars. The PRR Altoona Shops completed the work on the two cars in mid July 1939 in time for the trains July 28, 1939 inaugural.

Three additional rebuilt streamlined heavyweight head end cars were delivered by Altoona Shops in July 1939 for the much delayed new JEFFERSONIAN a new all coach train between St. Louis and New York finally inaugurated April 27, 1941. These three cars were Baggage 16 Crew Dormitory Buffet 16 seat Lounge Cars 6701 – 6703. These three cars were assigned to the ADMIRAL until the new JEFFERSONIAN entered service. Postwar these three cars were assigned to the PENN TEXAS between New York and St. Louis.

6701 – 6703

The PRR inaugurated an all-new Budd built seven car Coach streamlined between Chicago and Miami on an every third day schedule on December 19, 1940. The new train named the SOUTH WIND operated over PRR rails between Chicago and Louisville and was forwarded on to Miami by other roads the NC&STL. L&N, ACL, and FEC. The new Budd built streamliner was hardly recognizable as a Budd built product as it was delivered with a coat of PRR Tuscan red covering the gleaming stainless steel finish. The first car in the new train was a Baggage 16 Crew Dormitory 18 revenue seat Coach Combination numbered 6700. The cars for the new train were all delivered by Budd in late November 1940.

In March 1942 the PRR Altoona Shops turned out three Baggage 16 Crew Dormitory Buffet 16 seat Lounge cars numbered 6704 – 6706 identical to the earlier three for the JEFFERSONIAN. These three were assigned to the St. Louis – New York all Pullman SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS.
That same month the Altoona shops released seven-streamlined Baggage 36 revenue seat Coach Combinations 5100 – 5106 rebuilt from heavyweights. The cars were assigned to General Service but were most often found in trains operating in the New York – Washington corridor.

In 1943 the PRR Altoona Shops streamlined eight additional head end cars. Six of these cars were Baggage 36 revenue seat Coach Combinations 5107 – 5112 out shopped between January and April, 1943 and assigned to General Service mostly in trains operating in the New York – Washington corridor.
The other two head end cars out shopped by Altoona in June 1943 were a pair of Baggage 22 Crew Dormitory cars 6707, 6708 for assignment to the New York Chicago GENERAL.

6707, 6708

Following WW II the PRR not only placed large orders for new postwar cars from Budd, Pullman Standard and American Car & Foundry but from there own Altoona Shops they ordered their first new cars that were not rebuilds from heavyweights. In September – October 1947 the Altoona Shops delivered five new-streamlined Baggage Buffet 27 seat Lounge cars 6695 - 6699 for assignment to the TRAIL BLAZER and JEFFERSONIAN.

American Car & Foundry delivered four Baggage 22 Crew Dormitory cars in April 1948 numbered 6691 – 6694. These four cars were assigned two each to consists of the ADMIRAL and two each to consists of the LIBERTY LIMITED. These were the last new head end cars ever built for the PRR.

In 1964-1965 the PRR Altoona shops remodeled five of these postwar streamlined head end cars into Baggage 60’ Railway Post Office cars for assignment to the Northeast Corridor. All cars were assigned new 6500 series numbers after rebuilding to Baggage 60’ Railway Post Office Cars as follows:

G'day!

[#welcome] aboard Mark! Really an interesting Post and something that most probably would be better suited for "Our" Place - the adult cyber bar 'n grill on this Forum - where the conversation is amongst adults discussing Classic Trains - while having a bit of fun doing so! [tup] There are more than a few guys who would appreciate reading your Post - why not give it a "rerun" over there on Wednesday [?]

Of course it is an INTERACTIVE site - not like this one where people sort of "hit 'n run" . . . Just check out the way things are done and you'll have no problems . . . .

Thanx for the input and hope to see ya again! [tup]

It was in the Winter of either 1942 or 1943 and my Uncle drove my Aunt and I the 30 odd miles from Bradenton, Fla. to the Union Station in Tampa. I was 10 or maybe 11 years old and very excited because this was to be my first ever trip on a long distance train and in a Pullman sleeper no less! As I recall the Tampa section of the Southland consisted of four Pullmans and four or five coaches plus a number of head end cars. All were heavy weights.

Our porter took our luggage on board and showed my Aunt and I to our open section seats. I can't remember exactly but think our car had 12 sections with one compartment and possible two bedrooms. We pulled out of Tampa at dusk behind an Atlantic Coast Line 4-8-2 which was one of several the ACL had purchased from the Lackawanna expressly for service on the Southland. Our first stop was at Trilby and I accompanied out porter to one of the car's vestibules where he opened the top half of the door and invited me to look out with him to watch the coaches and Pullmans from the St. Petersburg section being added to our train.

Not long after leaving Trilby our porter made up our berths and my Aunt took the lower while I climbed the ladder and bedded down in the upper. I was a little disappointed that my Aunt had the window while I had to be content with listening to the clickety clack of the rail joints and the occasional deep chime whistle of that big mountain engine as she rolled through the sparsely populated (at that time) upper Gulf coast.

The Southland ran over the ACL's Perry cutoff which by passed Jacksonville and ran through such metropolises as Gulf Hammock, Shamrock, Chiefland, and Perry (it's namesake). For years I was of the belief that the Southland was limited to 30 mph over this route because of its big engine and the lightly built roadbed. The Perry cutoff was laid with 90 lb. rail much of which was only cinder ballasted. Needless to say it was "dark" territory with timetable and train order operations. Recently Russell Tedder informed me that the ACL's Employee Timetables showed a 59 mph speed limit over the "Cutoff". I'll bow to Russell's superior knowledge since he grew up around Perry and as young man was the Live Oak, Perry & Gulf's agent/operator at Perry. In any event I was so excited that I lay in my gently swaying upper berth for hours listening to the muted train sounds before finally falling asleep.

Sometime around sunup The ACL handed us off to the Central of Georgia and when I awoke, got dressed quickly and headed for breakfast with my Aunt we were really highballing compared to our more leisurely pace over the ACL. Breakfast in that CoG diner which had been added to our train as we sped up the main to Atlanta at breakneck speed behind a CofG 4-8-2 was truly memorable. It was both the first time I had ever eaten in a dining car and also the fastest I had ever travelled! I learned we had been 20 minutes late leaving Thomasville, GA. but the CofG made it up and put us into Atlanta on the dot.

At Atlanta we dropped off at least the Tampa-Atlanta sleeper and maybe a St. Pete-Atlanta Pullman as well. I believe (but am not sure) we picked up a sleeper from the CoG's overnight train from Savannah. The CofG diner was dropped and a Louisville & Nashville diner added; undoubtedly there was some shuffling of head end cars and coaches as well.

We left Atlanta on the L&N late in the morning for the day time run through the mountains of north Georgia, eastern Tennessee and Kentucky. This line was single tracked but semaphore block signalled all the way to Cincinnatti. This was truly "curve city" all the way around the mountains and through the valleys. While we were double headed by a pair of L&N 4-6-2's I doubt if we ever hit 60 mph
due to the length of the Southland combined with those mountain grades and the speed restrictions on the curves. Not too long after lunch in the diner we were in Tennessee and as we went around the curves I was watching that double header and the semaphores dropping as we passed them until I dozed off ocassionally.

I'd wake up from my slumbers as the train slowed for a staion stop and I remember three things quite distinctly about that afternoon. First, at some small town in the mountains where a branch of the Southern Railway interchanged with the L&N I saw a SR compound articulated 2-8-8-2. This was my first ever sight of such an engine!
Second, I remember stopping at Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the surprising number of passengers who got off there, undobtedly employees of the atomic plant which could be seen across the valley from the L&N's station. Third, and again at another small mountain town where the Kentucky & Tennessee terminated and had an engine house right alongside the L&N main with several K&T 2-8-0's and 2-8-2' s on their service tracks in plain view.

At Corbin, Kentucky we changed engines and after a sumptuous meal in the diner (my Aunt who was paying the bill indulged my every wish) we soon retired for the night. I slept like a log and never even opened my eyes at our Cincinnatti Union Station stop where the L&N handed us off to the Pennsylvania RR. The next morning I barely woke in time to get dressed and get off the train at Gary, Indiana where my Dad was waiting to pick us up on the snowy wind blown station platfrom. Oh yes, the Pennsy had run the train with a pair of K-4 Pacifics on the overnight dash from
Cincinnatti to Chicago.

Good Day Captain Tom

Something of relevance to the subject UP turbines:

QUOTE: Gas Turbine Locomotives

A New Era

Union Pacific was the only railroad in the United States to own and operate gas turbine locomotives. The turbine, rather than an internal combustion diesel engine, drove an alternator/generator to supply electricity to electric motors mounted on the axles. Union Pacific's gas turbine fleet totalled 55 locomotives.

The first turbine, No. 50, was built by Alco-GE in 1948 and was tested extensively on UP in 1949. Although it was painted in Union Pacific colors, the railroad never owned No. 50, but it paved the way for the GE turbine fleet which followed. The first ten UP turbines, Nos. 51-60, packing 4,500 horsepower each, were delivered to UP by General Electric in 1952. Fifteen more of these units were ordered in 1954 and numbered 61-75. Thirty units of a larger model, numbered 1-30, were delivered between 1958 and 1961. With a hefty 8,500 horsepower apiece, the last 30 units were the largest locomotives ever built.

The turbine fleet pulled freight trains between Council Bluffs, IA and Ogden, UT. Although tested on the Salt Lake City to Los Angeles run, their tremendous noise quickly made them unpopular in California. The locomotives were nicknamed "Big Blows" for their deafening jet engine exhaust noise. The huge locomotives, with their big appetite for fuel oil, eventually fell victim to the more efficient diesels, and in 1970 the turbines ran their last miles.

Union Pacific also experimented with a steam turbine in 1939 and a coal-fired turbine in 1962. Neither locomotive, however, was successful.

Locomotives on Display

Although Union Pacific never donated any turbines directly to museums, two of the locomotives did survive and are now on public display. No. 18 is at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL and No. 26 and 26B are displayed at Ogden Union Station in Ogden, UT.

UNION
PACIFIC
(UP)Streamlined Dining & Lounge Cars
by Al

On February 12, 1934 The Union Pacific received the first truly successful streamlined train in the world. This three car articulated streamliner included Power Unit with turret cab above a large rounded grill an engine room housing the 600 hp distillate engine and electrical generator. In the same unit was a 20’ Railway Post Office Compartment and 15’baggage room. This power – RPO – Baggage unit was numbered M-10000. The second car in the articulated consist was a 56-revenue seat coach numbered 10400. The third car was a 56-revenue seat coach with a buffet-kitchen located in the Blind end bullet shaped observation end. This car was numbered 10401. The buffet-kitchen provided no seating as waiters took the passengers orders to their seats. This was the only food service provided in the three car articulated streamliner.
After a lengthy display at the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago the train traveled the country on exhibition and entered scheduled service January 31, 1935. Initially the train operated a daily round trip between Salina, Kansas and Kansas City. Within a few months the train began operating the following daily schedule: Salina – Kansas City – Topeka – Kansas City – Salina. While in this service the train was named the CITY OF SALINA and beginning December 16, 1941, the train was replaced by a steam-powered train with heavyweight cars a victim of its own success. The CITY OF SALINA was sent to Omaha where it remained until scrapped for its aluminum content in 1942.

The second streamlined train to enter service on the Union Pacific was the CITY OF PORTLAND. This train when it entered service June 6, 1935 was a seven car articulated streamliner. But before it entered service it traveled around the country as a six car articulated streamliner after its delivery October 2, 1934. As originally built the six car train lacked a Dining-lounge car, only the 54-revenue seat coach buffet-kitchen blind end observation 10402 was part of the original as built consist. This would be rectified before the train entered service in June 1935. Articulated car E.H. HARRIMAN was built originally as a 10 section 1 compartment 1 double bedroom sleeping car that was trainlined third in the original consist. As the train entered scheduled service the former E.H. HARRIMAN was rebuilt to a 30-seat dining 10-seat lounge car and numbered 10300. It still was trainlined third articulated car in consist. The 10300 provided food and beverage service to the first class passengers of the CITY OF PORTLAND and the 10402 provided coach passengers with food and beverage service. The following consist is of the CITY OF PORTLAND as it entered scheduled service.

Like the CITY OF SALINA this CITY OF PORTLAND train was retired and scrapped at Omaha in April 1941.
In 1936 two new nine-car articulated streamlined consists entered service. One thing that immediately set these two train sets apart and that was for the first time the power units were not articulated to the rest of the consists. These were designated the third and fourth trains.
The third train entered scheduled service May 15, 1936 as the CITY OF LOS ANGELES. The new CITY OF LOS ANGELES featured two power units a Cab unit with a 1,200 hp diesel and a booster unit with a 900 hp diesel. These were numbered M-10002A and M-10002B. The three cars in the consist we are concerned with in this book are 12760 a baggage –12-crew dormitory – Kitchen car, 10301 a 32-seat dining expandable at meal times to 40 seats and a 17-seat lounge expandable during non meal hours to 25-seats. The third car we are concerned with in this CITY OF LOS ANGELES train was the 10404 a 38-revenue seat coach buffet kitchen blind end observation. All cars were articulated in the nine car consist. The three cars we are concerned with were train lined second, third and ninth in the CITY OF LOS ANGELES.
Car 12201, Car 12760 and 10404 were retired and scrapped in March 1943.

The fourth train a new CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO inaugurated June 14, 1936 was identical to the new CITY OF LOS ANGELES except for the power units. The first power unit M-10004A featured a 1,200 hp diesel and the booster unit M-10004B featured a 1,200 hp diesel. The second articulated car was a baggage 12-crew dormitory Kitchen car 12202; the dining lounge car 10302 was identical to the 10301. The third car was the articulated 10406 another blind end observation with 38-coach seats and a buffet –kitchen. The fourth train was extensively rebuilt after being removed from -month rebuilding the train emerged as a 10-car articulated train set with a single car and with two power units. The power units M-10004A and M-10004B were renumbered LA-4A and LA-4B. The former blind end observation kitchen –buffet car 10406 was completely rebuilt to a 40-seat coach and was shifted to become the first articulated car in the consist with the new number LA-403.The third articulated car was the LA-603 now a 32-seat Coffee Shop Kitchen car rebuilt from the Baggage – 12 crew dormitory Kitchen car 12761. The fourth articulated car was LA-604 a 60-seat dining room car rebuilt from the former 10302. The last car in this train was an articulated Buffet 38-seat lounge square ended observation numbered and named LA-902 COPPER KING originally built as auxiliary power 30’RPO Baggage car 12202 the first articulated car in the original fourth train consist. The fourth train was not retired until 1948 and was finally scrapped in 1950. Original cars as built listed first followed by dining and lounge cars as rebuilt.

The next two trains the fifth and sixth built for the Union Pacific were the CITY OF DENVER consists delivered in June 1936. These trains were each ten cars and were the first streamliners that no more than two cars were articulated pairs. As delivered each consist had four single cars and three articulated pairs. The cars we are concerned with here are the third, sixth and tenth in each consist The third car in each consist was the Baggage “Frontier Shack” Buffet 24-seat Tavern Lounge car, the sixth car in each consist a 24-seat dining 12 seat cocktail lounge car. The third car was part of an articulated pair and was the final car in each consist, these were 5-Double Bedroom 1 compartment 22-Seat Lounge Observations. All numbered cars in the two CITY OF DENVER consists were assigned new CD prefix numbers in June 1937. The fifth train dining and lounge cars are listed first followed by the sixth trains showing the original numbers and the CD numbers in parenthesis.

The CD-61 dining –lounge car was rebuilt to a 40-seat dining car in December 1942. In February 1943 CD-60 underwent the same conversion work.
The CD-70 was rebuilt in December 1944 to a 12-Crew Dormitory Buffet 24-seat “Frontier Shack” Tavern lounge car, one month later in January 1945 the same work was completed to CD-71. While the CITY OF DENVER streamlined cars were rebuilt heavyweight cars substituting.
The Union Pacific received five articulated Twin-unit dining cars from Pullman Standard in November 1937 carrying the same number on both cars 5100 - 5104. They rode on four-wheel trucks at their outer ends and a six-wheel truck was under the articulation. The one car contained Crew Dormitory space for 20 and the Kitchen. The other half of the Twin Unit dining cars was a 68-seat dining room car. The five twin-unit dining sets were assigned to the LOS ANGELES CHALLENGER pool of cars.
Following WW-II the 5100 – 5104 were assigned to the CITY streamliners when daily service began in 1947. All but 5102 were assigned to the four consists of the first daily CITY OF LOS ANGELES streamliners and the 5102 was assigned to one of the CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO daily train sets. As new equipment arrived for the postwar streamliners the five twin – unit dining cars were assigned to other UP trains such as the LOS ANGELES LIMITED, IDAHOAN and other secondary trains during peak travel times when a single unit dining car was unable to handle the crowds. All five of these twin unit sets were assigned to the revived CHALLENGER in 1954 after the dining room units seating was reduced to 52.
In March – April 1956 the twin-units were assigned separate numbers as follows:

The next train to enter service on the UP was the seventh train a new CITY OF LOS ANGELES. This train was made up of four single cars and 10 articulated cars for a fourteen car consist. The cars of concern to us in this book are the articulated pair train lined fourth and fifth the single car following the articulated pair and the last car in the fourteen car consist. This new train was delivered to the UP in December 1937 and entered service on the eighteenth of that month. The articulated pair consisted of a 32-seat coffee shop kitchen car LA-601 BILTMORE articulated to a 72-seat dining room car LA-602 AMBASSADOR.
The next car in consist was the 9-crew dormitory ¼ round bar 35-seat Club car LA-701 “THE LITTLE NUGGET” decorated in a gay nineties theme.
The final car in consist was the LA-901 SUN VALLEY a buffet 38-seat Lounge Observation nurses quarters and barber shop. All CITY OF LOS ANGELES cars lasted until the late 1950s before meeting the scrapper. In the case of LA-701 “THE LITTLE NUGGET” it still is preserved today in a railroad museum in southern California.

At nearly the same time the eighth train was delivered a new CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO consist that entered service January 2, 1938. This train was also a fourteen car consist with six single cars and eight articulated cars in pairs.
The third and fourth articulated cars were 32-seat coffee shop car with kitchen SF-601 PRESIDIO articulated to a 72-seat dining room car SF-602 MISSION DOLORES. The next single car SF-701 EMBARCADERO featured 9-crew dormitory ¼ round bar and 35-seat lounge.
The final car in consist was SF-901 NOB HILL with nurses quarters barbershop buffet 38-seat lounge observation. Only the SF-901 NOB HILL had a long career on the UP the other three CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO feature cars were destroyed by an act of sabotage near Harney Nevada August 12, 1939.

In June and July 1941 the UP received a large number of cars to partially reequip the seventh train and replace the wreck damaged cars of the eighth train. At the same time there were enough of these new cars to equip a new ninth train CITY OF LOS ANGELES and new tenth train CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO. As a result of these changes the following CITY OF LS ANGELES cars were reassigned to the CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO and they exchanged their LA prefix numbers and named for SF prefix names as follows:

Two new non-articulated cars were built for the revised seventh train; they were LA-611 MISSION INN a 24-seat Café 29-seat Lounge car, and 56-seat Dining car LA-701 BILTMORE. Both cars were constructed and delivered in June 1941 by Pullman Standard to the Union Pacific. At the same time a mostly new ninth train CITY OF LOS ANGELES was constructed to enter service. The new Café Lounge car for this train was LA-612 HACIENDA and the 56-seat dining car was LA-607 BILTMORE. Next to the dining car was a new Barbershop nurses room buffet 30-seat club lounge car LA-703 “HOLLYWOOD”. At the same time a revised eighth train and a mostly new tenth train entered service as CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO train sets.
A new articulated 32-seat Coffee shop Kitchen car and 64-seat dining car were built for the new tenth train SF-609 FORT MASON and SF-610 ST. FRANCIS WOODS. The revised eighth train used the former CITY OF LOS ANGELES seventh train cars renamed for CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO service as previously mentioned.
The revised eighth train received a new 9-crew-dormitory buffet 35-seat club lounge car SF-702 EMBARCADERO and the new tenth train received a new Barbershop Nurses quarters Buffet 30-seat Club Lounge car SF-704 MARINA. In August 1942 Omaha shops remodeled 56-seat coach with nurses room 5203 into a 24-seat coach and 22-seat lounge car. The former nurses quarters of this coach was converted into a bar. The car was added to the ninth train CITY OF LOS ANGELES trainlined between LA-405 PASADENA and LA-406 BOULDER CITY that trains two 48-seat coaches. The 5203 car was originally built for the CHALLENGER in 1937. The 5203 was again remodeled in 1947 to a Barber Shop Bar 32-seat Lounge car and this time renumbered 1521 for daily CITY train service. In addition seven additional former CHALLENGER 56-seat coaches with nurses quarters were rebuilt to barber shop bar 32-seat Lounge cars for daily CITY service as follows in 1947. Two of the cars 1522 and 1523 were equipped for end of train service with a finished flat type end with a small round porthole centered complete with window wiper and assigned to two of the CITY OF LOS ANGELES consists when that train became daily.

The CITY OF PORTLAND was the first UP CITY streamliner to become a daily train in 1947. Café Lounge cars LA-611 MISSION INN and LA-612 HACIENDA were shopped and rebuilt to 56-seat dining cars only the prefix in their numbers changed from LA to CP. 56-seat Dining cars LA-607 BILTMORE and LA-608 AMBASSADOR also had their prefix changed from LA to CP for the 1947 summer daily CITY OF PORTLAND trains.
The Union Pacific – Chicago & North Western – Southern Pacific placed large orders for postwar cars to equip the CITY streamliners but deliveries would not begin until 1949. The SP remained loyal to Pullman Standard while the UP and C&NW turned to American Car & Foundry for their postwar CITY fleet. The UP ordered fifty 10-6 sleeping cars from Budd that became the backbone of the postwar CITY fleet.
Between January and April 1949 American Car & Foundry delivered twenty-one 48-seat dining cars for streamliner service, four of these cars were C&NW owned 6956-6959 and the other seventeen were UP 4800-4816. These cars were assigned to the CITY OF PORTLAND, CITY OF LOS ANGELES, CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO and LOS ANGELES LIMITED all were painted in streamliner colors. All four of the former C&NW cars were sold to Mexico for further service. The UP cars were not retired until 1970-71 and all but four were sold to other railroads or tourist services. The UP retained four; one for Work train service and three were assigned to the UP business fleet.

In April – May 1949 the UP received six 6-crew dormitory buffet 39-seat lounge cars 6100 – 6105. These cars were initially assigned to the CITY OF LOS ANGELES and later operated in the LOS ANGELES LIMITED and even operated in the CHALLENGERS for a brief period. All of these cars were retired in 1970-71 and sold for further service.

The C&NW cars were withdrawn from streamliner service in May 1955 and were assigned to 400 trains after that time. The three C&NW cars were retired in 1970. All seven UP cars were remodeled between May 1959 and May 1960 to 8-seat lunch counter 24-seat dining 16-seat lounge cars. After remodeling the cars were assigned to coach passengers of the CITY OF PORTLAND and CITY OF DENVER trains. Six of the seven UP cars were retired in 1967 and sold while the seventh 5004 remained on the UP until 1971 when it was sold to the Alaska Railroad for further service.

In September 1950 the UP purchased the GM TRAIN OF TOMORROW and after repainting in Omaha sent the cars west in a CITY OF LOS ANGELES consist. From Los Angeles the cars traveled to there new home Portland Oregon where they were assigned to the UP Portland – Seattle pool trains. The two dome cars we are concerned with are the dome dining car SKY VIEW with 18 seats at tables in the dome arranges three tables for two on the right hand side facing forward and three tables for four on the left side. At the front of the dome were a condiment table and an electric dumbwaiter that brought the food from the kitchen located o the main level of the car forward of the dome. On the main level to the rear of the dome was another 18-seat dining room featuring three regular dining tables for four and three tables for two on the opposite side. The main dining areas of the car seated 36 total. In addition there was a private dining area beneath the dome for six. This area was opened up for extra dining space when not reserved for a private party. The Union Pacific assigned the number 8010 to the SKY VIEW in March 1956.
The other dome operated in the TRAIN OF TOMORROW of interest in this book is the MOON GLOW the trains dome lounge observation. The dome featured the usual 24-seats and the forward part of the main level was a cocktail lounge with seating for 13. Beneath the dome was the remainder of the cocktail lounge and the bar the seating beneath the dome was for 10. To the rear of the dome on the main level of the car was a desk and chair tucked in behind the stairs leading to the dome level in a private alcove. The main level to the rear of this alcove was arranged in a comfortable lounge setting with seating for 21. Originally this was the observation end of the car later squared off for mid-train operation. The car MOON GLOW was numbered 9015 in March 1956. This is the only TRAIN OF TOMORROW car that was saved, after rescue from a Pocatello scrap yard the car today is being restored by a Railroad Historical group at Ogden Utah.
In December 1953 American Car & Foundry delivered two Twin Unit Dining cars 5105 and 5106. Both cars carried the same number. These cars were nearly identical to those built for the CHALLENGER before WW II. The units were comprised of a 20-Crew Dormitory – Kitchen car and 52-seat Dining Room car attached to one another by draw bar. These two sets were assigned to the 1954 CITY OF DENVER consists. The new CITY OF DENVERS began service January 10, 1954. In 1956 the cars in each set were individually numbered 20-Crew Dormitory – Kitchen car 5105 became 5110 and 52-seat Dining Room Car 5105 was numbered 5111. The other set with 20-Crew Dormitory – Kitchen car 5106 was renumbered 5112 and 52-seat dining room car 5106 was renumbered 5113.

Between February and April 1955 the UP received fifteen Dome Lounge Observations with a squared off observation end complete with neon lighted tail sign identifying which streamliner they were built for. The cars built by American Car & Foundry were among the finest domes built construction was mainly of Aluminum with the dome area that holds the glass constructed of stainless steel, This framing was constructed by Budd for American Car and Foundry, which explains why the UP domes so closely resembled Budd domes in appearance. The only difference between the two makes of domes was that AC&F requested curved glass panels instead of flat glass panels like Budd offered in there standard domes. The interiors of these dome lounge Observations were identical to that built for the TRAIN OF TOMORROW car. Forward of the dome on the main level was a cocktail lounge seating with seating for 12. Beneath the dome was the remainder of the cocktail lounge and lounge the seating was for ten passengers. There was a desk and chair on the main level to the rear tucked in behind the stairs leading to the dome level for the use of any sleeping car passenger wishing to write letters. The main level to the rear of this alcove was arranged in a lounge with comfortable seating for 21. The interiors of the cars were decorated in three different styles to suit the territory the cars were assigned to operate through giving them some local flavor. Dome observations 9000 – 9004 were built for and assigned to the CITY OF LOS ANGELES consists. Dome Observations 9005 – 9009 were built for and assigned to the CITY OF PORTLAND consists, and 9010 – 9014 were built for and assigned to the CITY OF ST. LOUIS cars. All of these cars lost their distinctive tail-signs and were fitted with a diaphragm at the Observation end to permit mid-train operation. This is exactly where the cars were moved to operate directly behind the dining cars.

Dome –Dining cars joined the streamliner fleet in April – May 1955, for assignment to the CITY OF LOS ANGELES and CITY of PORTLAND consists. These cars numbered 8000 – 8009 were built with a kitchen in the short main level of the car ahead of the dome the pantry was located under the dome occupying ½ of this space. The other ½ of the area beneath the dome was occupied by a ten-seat dining room. This was the reserve dining area used only during peak travel periods or when reserved by passengers traveling in groups or when movie stars or other VIPS traveling required privacy. To the rear of the under dome area in the long main level area was a dining room with three round tables for four and three round tables for two giving this dining room seating for 18. The dome area seated an additional eighteen passengers for dining at conventional type dining seating with three tables for two along one side of the dome and three tables for four along the other side of the dome. Food was delivered to the dome level by an electric dumbwaiter located at the front of the dome. There was also a condiment area and bread warmer as well as toaster located at the front of the dome. Those dome –dining cars 8000-8004 built for the CITY OF LOS ANGELES were decorated in a Hollywood theme, while those built for the CITY OF PORTLAND 8005 – 8009 were decorated in Rose patterns as Portland is known as the city of Roses.
Total dining capacity of the cars was 46 seats when the reserve dining room was used.
These cars were not popular with crews as the kitchen and dome was always hot and the air conditioning system was unable to adequately cool these areas of the cars during the hot summer months.

American Car and Foundry delivered four Lunch Counter Dining cars to the UP in June 1956 for assignment to the CITY OF ST. LOUIS. Only four cars were built as they only operated between Denver and Los Angeles. Five would have been required for through St. Louis – Los Angeles service. The four cars were numbered 4000 – 4003. These cars seated 20 at one of the longest lunch counters on a streamlined passenger car. There were also four tables for four at one end of the car.

The 4000 was assigned to the CITY OF LAS VEGAS between Los Angeles and Las Vegas round trip daily beginning September 15, 1957 with 4002 held in reserve for this service.
In 1960 the cars were shopped and the Lunch Counter seats were removed and a cafeteria service area replaced the lunch counter. The tables were also removed and seating only was provided for 16 against the walls of the car where the dining area had formally been located.

As a kid and teenager I and my mom would use the GN Red River to get up to our lake home (getting off at Fergus Falls where my dad would meet us and we'd drive to the lake). I've always considered it one of the most beautiful GN streamliners ever built -- the interiors of the cars were remarkable. The coaches if I recall correctly were done in a color scheme of rose, salmon pink, silver gray, charcoal gray, and walls of a cream yellow. Does anyone know of or have any photos of the interiors of this remarkable train set? They (and the artwork inside the cars) were exceptional, in league with the Empire Builder.
