I submit we add this to the category:

If I get enough expression of interest I'll work up more formal design and see if I can put a trust together to build it...

What the hell is THAT?

Jeez!  And people said the Union Pacific's streamlined Pacific used on the "49er" looked like a slug!  This thing  looks like a psychotic Moby Dick with drivers!

Taking Vinces pictures seriatim...

1)  Yep, Russian all right.  They can't get past "Socialist Realism," that is, it doesn't have to look good, it just has to work!

2)  That mini-steamer's cool! I want one for the back yard!

3)  The NYC elevated.  That particular section's obviously outlived it's usefulness, or someone thinks it has.

4)  Um, I appreciate the sentiment, I really do, but I think that KCS locomotive's a bit over the top.  Need to dial it back a bit.  Sometimes less is more.

5)  All those diesels!  A "Prosperity Special" for the 21st Century?

6)  Reminds me of a story of a Southern Railway's roundhouse foreman when the first diesels began to show up...

"You ain't bringin' those streetcars in MY SHOP!"

7)  Great ad from the "Fabulous 50's," and yeah, it's too archaic, wouldn't work now.  But it's cute!  Speaking of cute, we used to have those cast-iron street mailboxes years ago too.  All gone now.

8)  Forget what I said about #2!  I want THIS one!

Superb. I like the elevated ditch lights and the front driver mud guard. Not sure how you get in... perhaps that hatch by the 'tender'.

Could be steam or Diesel, an option for each? Or perhaps bush button selection. At least it shows some thinking!

Your #1 is not a TEM 7A, it's a TEM 8A. (See Red Dot design awards). I believe most of these 16-wheel TEMs are road-switchers, not centercabs; the 7/7A have very interesting span-bolster B-B trucks instead of the Russian-designed eight-wheel type seen on the 8A. These are supposed to have two 8-cylinder engines for a total of 2400hp. Note the cab window treatment -- this opens interesting possibilities, albeit raising some fairly severe cab-safety issues (compare the discussion of glazing in S-580 cab development in North America).

1) Russian TEM 7A Heavy Shunting Locomotive

2) Dosen't get much simpler than this.. at least he won't run out of coal.. more tender than locomotive! ( yes I know the boiler is under the coal)

3)  "Save Our Tracks"... abandoned elevated NYC

4) KCS Commemorative ... Well ok , but.....no.

What say you?

5) Comedy break time!

UP sets PSR record delivering 58,753 cars to Chicago. Problem... they didn't know what to do once they got there with the train. Traffic backed up to Timmins, Ontario.

6)  " If they think I'm taking out that Diesel they better think again"

7)  Some ads that would not fly today.

Well now this one might, not much changed really.

 8) Now this is quite a contraption .. study it for a while!

Some folks thing the E-S-E streamlined Hudson looks better than the Dreyfuss Hudson.  I'm not one of them, but I like them both!  They're both lookers!

Along with the named cars NYC got some extra 56-seat coaches.  One of them was later named for Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, who was in office when the cars were delivered.

One more thing about the Empire State Express I forgot to mention. Many people including me forgot the names of the designer who created the streamlined shrouding of the E-S-E Hudson, they were Mr. Chase H. Knowlton and Mr. George M. Davies! It wasn't easy to create something as impressive as the Dreyfuss Hudson, they did a great job and their efforts have paid off.

And in the spirit of the El Capitan  lounge car, and to inject some badly needed humor, there's this story.

One of the "Trains" staffers, Mike Yuhas I believe, grew up along the Long Island Railroad.  As Mike said...

"I always used to wave at the trains, but nobody ever waved back.  Except the people in the bar car, they always  waved back!"

I wonder why?   Wink

Yes you can Mr. Jones, you're entitiled, and make it good and strong to kill the bug!

Try "Makers Mark Cask Strength" bourbon if there's any available.  112 proof!  Wow!

I only take a shot on the coldest days.

And you be careful over there!  Please!

Those "Drank himself to death" stories are tragic, to say the least.  Did any of you know Mr. Trump's older brother did the same?  That's why Mr. Trump doesn't drink, at all.

Jeez, let's get back to trains, QUICK!

Cheers to good friends, good health, Wayne!

Believe it or not, I seldom drink in my spare time, but I do enjoy having drinks with my friends.

 Fill the glass!

My younger only brother by 6 years drank himself to death, always in some kind of trouble especially later in life. I don't know I just don't know, troubling and haunting.

A friend shot himself @ age 19.

And I learned how to Cry.

Thank You.

I recall as a kid spotting a headlight and waiting.. and listening intently, and as soon as it was recognizable as a Diesel I would say " nah, just a stupid Diesel"  Geep or covered wagon, didn't even look, just a stupid Diesel.. turn back around to catch the caboose and wave. If it wasn't steam it was disappointing. That was the rule of the day.

As for Raymond and drunkards, well 'But for the grace of God go I'.

Growing up with drunks for Uncles I have learned well to simply avoid, but I wish them no harm.

The "Steam streamliners getting ready to have a drag race" image Mr. Jones posted?

My money's on Mighty 611!  She ain't gonna let herself get beat by those damn Yankee engines!

N&W HAD to call it a "Class J,"  NO WAY were they going to call it a "Northern!"

That C&O "banana" is a friendly rival, but she won't let that one win either!

2) "Now listen Frank, you just can't go around punching F units in the face!" (Birmingham, Alabama 1959 FYI)
Role Play: "(Drunk Voice) First...... I am no Frank... and don't you call me Frank again...! Second...... I am going to punch it just because I can! I CAN... even though my mentor said that the E unit and F unit are good looking diesel..."

This would be far funnier if, in fact, there were an F unit involved here.  That is another E unit, as immediately seen from the flush numberboards and central gangway door, if you can't tell from what is visible of the truck detail.

Compare here: (OK, so it's an excuse to roll some green-and-gold video...)

It sure does.

About 17 years later, GE would take that design, stretch the frames to allow for one extra powered axle on each side of the center articulation, add a mid-40's streamlined cab and attempt to sell it to the Russians (Little Joe).

Thanks, Johnny.

I found this message from the quiz thread by forum member passengerfan:

EMPIRE STATE EXPRESS

New York – Cleveland - Detroit (December 7, 1941)

New York – Cleveland 605 miles

New York – Detroit 687 miles

The New York Central System inaugurated the two train sets that comprised the lightweight streamlined EMPIRE STATE EXPRESS on December 7, 1941 between New York City at the one end and both Cleveland and Detroit at the other. This date is best remembered as the date the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor and other military installations in Hawaii were attacked by Imperial Japanese forces plunging the U. S. into WW II.

The Detroit and Cleveland sections of the EMPIRE STATE EXPRESS split at Buffalo with the Detroit section operating across Southern Ontario to its destination. This section was generally anywhere from one to three Parlor cars a dining car and two or more coaches. The remaining cars operated through to and from Cleveland the two New York Central EMPIRE STATE EXPRESS lightweight streamliners departed from their respective terminals and after exchanging their Electric Locomotives at Harmon and the outskirts of Cleveland on the west.

The new J3A streamlined 4-6-4 Hudson Locomotives and Tenders took over for the run to the opposite electrified territory. The two streamlined J3A Hudson Locomotive and tenders were 5426 and 5429 with stainless steel installed on the tenders to match the trailing consists and stainless steel installed on the boiler Jacket cover. The roofs of the otherwise all stainless steel Budd built consists were painted black and the top of the Tender and Locomotive were painted black to match. Yes; the NYC trains between the East and Detroit used the CASO.
