About four to six inches from the blizzard early last night, then a light mix for a short period as temps starting rising.  Got the driveway cleared, so the 35º temperature and and the light rain will do the final clean-up if this hold for a bit.

Wierd storm.  The long distance doppler radar shows the warmer air and rain partly surrounded by "mix" and snow.  One would expect that the weather bands would have rain to the south, then heading north, icy mix and then snow.  The radar shows bands in central Illinois going the opposite way-rain to the north then mix then snow heading south.

If it's Sunday, I am taking a nap.

Weather is rather difficult to forecast at times... that's all I can say about this winter storm. We had thundersnow and very heavy snow yesterday evening, but then dry air wrapped into the thing and really cut into snowfall rates. My official forecast was for 5 to 7 inches and most areas across Omaha measured 4 to 6 inches, so I was not too far off. However, I got my hopes up yesterday evening that it would snow more. Fortunately, I left my forecast on my web site alone and didn't change anything.

I believe there are two reasons the heavy snow in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa didn't last long: 1) The massive area of rain, mixed precipitation, and thunderstorms to Omaha's east and southeast really took away a lot of our moisture. 2) This storm was so powerful that it wrapped dry air into its circulation, which cut back our snowfall amounts.

The knowledge that surprises like these can happen really make me keep my forecasts conservative. While I kept my prediction at 4 to 7 inches, the NWS increased our totals way to 6 to 12 inches and that obviously did not happen. I figure it's better to be conservative and possibly have a forecast that is a couple of inches under what happens, rather than go all out and have a forecast that is 6 inches above what happens. Weather is tricky, but if you stay level-headed, you have a decent chance at foreseeing its tricks and not letting them bust your forecast.

Joe, got a big ole plate ready for you to take tonight.  It's in the cooler, with your name on it, as always.  Glad your temps are going up; our temps are starting to slowly drop.

For everyone else, you will find everything out on the warmer bar.

To heck with the Oscars on TV tonight.  Never watch them, and won't be tonight.  Will probably call it an early night tonight, and try to catch up on some of the sleep I lost last night.Zzz [zzz]Zzz [zzz]  Like around 9:30, 10:00.

Oscar who?  Nevermind.

Meatloaf certainly hit the spot!  Never made it enough to develop any real personal touch, besides maybe adding onion soup mix...

Looks like a band of snow from the big storm will touch us overnight, but from what I hear, it won't amount to much.

When I was headed to VA last Sunday, I stopped to help out a motorist whose car had quit.  Actually ran into her today while shopping - turns out her catalytic converter was plugged.  That'll do it every time.

Time to catch up on some chores left undone whilst on the road.

Normally I would respond that I wouldn't be watching them either, but tonight our son is doing a podcast about the Oscars while they are being handed out.  Knowing him, it should be hilarious.  If anyone else is interested, their podcast site is here:

Joe - Got the email. Very nice photo. On Friday in Fremont, I saw 4 SP units, but all were patched. That must have been quite a treat seeing that unpatched engine. I keep hoping that someday I'll manage to see one of the few remaining unpatched SP units; that photo gives me hope!

That is a neat thing to play with!  My only wish is that there was something local to listen to but then again, new things are cool too.

Good Monday morning, to one and all!  Think I'm starting to feel 'human' again, after a very good night's sleep!  Big90Mac, the coffee pot is always on here, so no matter what time anyone comes in, there's coffee available, along with other n/a beverages.

We've got a nice temp out this morning, 35 degrees.  May have a few rain sprinkles this morning, but other than that, supposed to be a pretty good day today.

On the warmer bar this morning, you will find:  turkey bacon, sausage, biscuits, sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, tater tots, oatmeal, toast, bear claws and bagels.

Sure do hope that everyone can make it in this morning, after the storms from the weekend.  Seems like I may hear someone coming in the door, best go check, and see who is popping in.

Wow - some of you are up early this morning!

We will have a nose count here throughout the day.  Make sure everyone survived the wild weekend and the television programs.

Willy - we had 1.5 snow here.  Mostly slush that turned to chunks of ice overnite.  I whined loud enough that I diverted most of the snow from us.  I am happy, happy.

See Datafever is bringing flowers into the diner; Tree is back from his trip and some of our regulars are back visiting again.  Ah - all is right with the world and it is only Monday!

I'm glad you had a good night's rest, CW. Right now in Sioux Falls we have a cloudy sky and 21 degrees. the wind here is out of the north/northwest, leaving us with a wind chill of 8 degrees.

Last week I came upon a recipe for banana nut bread from the Northern Pacific Railway, and I think I'm going to try it later this week. I'm going to have to buy some bananas and a few other ingredients first. The list of ingredients in this recipe tells me it should be pretty good, and if it is, I will share it with others in this forum. Chef [C=:-)]

Joe - had pink eye a couple of times.  Felt like a little kid - but it was allergy related both times and it is nothing to mess with.  Warm water compresses until you can get the eye dr to poke his finner in your eye!

Joe, if you have pink eye, I can sympathize with you. I've had it two or three times and it is nasty stuff! Wash your hands often, avoid rubbing your eyes as much as possible, and it would be a good idea if you would change your pillow case every night when you go to bed. Above all, see your eye doctor or your primary care physician as quickly as you can, either one would prescribe eye drops which would quicly get rid of the mess in your eyes. I think the medical term for pink eye is "Cunjunctivitous" (not sure of the proper spelling).

Good morning, everyone.  Another beautiful day.  It is not a sunny day, but that is at least partially due to the fact that the sun is still sound asleep.

Not a bad stab there, Ray- just a couple of letters off.  "Conjunctivitis"

It's a weird Monday here in Eastern Iowa- the roads in town are OK, and most everything else is normal as far as my wife and I are concerned, but most of the schools in the area are closed today and alot of other things are canceled due to large sections of the area still not having any power.  Kinda the same situation they had in central Nebraska back around New Year's Eve, IIRC.

Joe, sounds like you've gotten good advice on pink eye, so won't add anything, except I hope you get better soon!!

For lunch today, we're having leftover meat loaf, mashed taters, etc. from yesterday.  I kind of got on a cooking binge yesterday, and mixed up several meat loafs.  Knew at least Mookie loves meat loaf, and asks for it every so often, so I wanted to make sure I had enough on hand, to have as leftovers today.  Now, to think of something for supper tonight.

Just got back from picking up my medicne.  I am now on the generic of Zocor, because my cholosterol is up to 255.  Think I'm gonna have to cut several foods from my diet, so I can help the medication get my cholosterol down.  Any suggestions from anyone? (Besides me not eating very many sweets, and gravies.  I don't imagine that helps cholosterol counts very much .)

Good Morning!

I have Thursday and Friday off from school this week and tomorrow is a late start, so I'm pretty happy.

There are two more storm systems that I'm watching. The first one will be on Wednesday. Ray, it looks like you could get some snow or freezing rain out of that one, with just light precip down here in Omaha.

The second one looks stronger and farther south and it has the potential to give Omaha and points south several inches of snow. That one really bears close watching. I'll keep everyone updated.

Willy I look forward to your forecasts!  By my estimates we got about 16" of snow in total up here over the last 3 days.  As you said before Willy we're supposed to get round two this weekend.  I'm hoping for it.

Mookie I may have to beg to differ with you (respectfully!) on the snoring issue!  I know someone (female) that, while she sleeps, on occasion sounds like a Freightliner using a Jake brake!  BTW my little cat (Chace http://www.danielgbraun.com/cgi-bin/i/images/chace_010_256x192.jpg) had his first try at the out-of-doors yesterday.  He made it about a foot out of the door, slipped on snow, and then boogied back to the warm bed!
