Ok folks. Time for a discussion on La Nina and El Nino. Enjoy.

Definitions:

La Nina is basically colder than average temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. The effects of La Nina are felt mostly during the winter. Temperatures during the winter are usually warmer than average in the southeast U.S. and colder than average in the northwest U.S., with the midwest and central plains usually ending up a little colder than average. Precipitation is usually above average in the northwest and below average in the southeast, with the midwest and central plains again falling in between.

El Nino is characterized by warmer than average temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. El Nino's effects on the U.S. are basically the opposite of La Nina's effects. Winter temperatures are generally warmer than average in the northwest and central U.S. and colder than average in the southern U.S. Temperatures in the central plains (including Nebraska and Iowa) are generally warmer than average.

Winter precipitation is usually right around average in our area during El Nino years. Often times during El Nino winters, we experience rather dry conditions during December and January with most, if any, precip falling as rain. February is kind of a transition month with average amounts of precip, falling mainly as snow. March can be a real bear with powerful low pressure systems lifting out of the southwest U.S. and bringing our area large snowstorms. This may occur over the weekend.

Was this a true El Nino Winter?

This winter was indeed a true El Nino winter with all of the effects of El Nino felt across the United States. This winter's El Nino was of average intensity, so no real wild extremes were felt for most areas. We were warmer than average for much of the winter, with our cold spell during late January and into February. Now, the late February and March storm systems are going to start rolling through the central U.S. with a possible big one this weekend.

I know this was a rather long explanation, but it was needed for everyone to get a good understanding of the whole thing. If you have any questions, just let me know and I will do my best to answer them, but keep in mind that I am only 16 yo!

Thank you for that explanation, Willy.  Thumbs Up [tup]

You may only be 16, but that doesn't mean a thing.  You have an interest in meteorology and already know all of the best places to locate meaningful information.  Plus, you are someone who is willing to do the legwork for those of us who are too lazy to sift through hundreds of web sites trying to find what we are looking for.  And even then, we might find the wrong web site and come away with an erroneous answer to our question.

Only sixteen?  Hah!  Don't sell yourself so short.  Age has nothing to do with knowledge, and seemingly very little to do with wisdom.  Not all sixteen year olds deserve much in the way of kudos, but you most certainly deserve all of the kudos that you receive.  Thumbs Up [tup]

Judging by the weather maps presented by our local prognosticators here in CR, it would appear that this weekend's big storm will track in a more northerly direction- thus sparing us members to the east of any significant snow.  They're telling us we might get doused with up to two inches of rain, though- which I'M looking forward to to check out my new electronic rain gauge on the weather station...

Willy, Very Nice Explanation of El Nino & La Nina; that was much better and easier to understand than what some of the "Actual Paid People" try to give!

Well, looks like CW won't be in today, so you all are going to have to "Fend" for yourselves.  Seems like certain things that were brought up yesterday have greatly

Since our regular cook has today off I thought I would make dinner tonight.

Here's the menu-

     Enchilada's-

           Chicken or Turkey

Texamati Rice with Mushrooms, Onions and Pine Nuts

     Guacamole

Refried Beans with or without cheese

 Dessert-

     Churros

       Rosca de Reyes (Sweet bread)

If you want anything else just ask and I'll make some and as always there is plenty for all.  I added some more chairs to the dinner table so there is plenty of room if anyone new decides to join us.

Emmar - Just wanted to let you know that dinner sounds awesome. So, I think I'll have a chicken enchilada, refried beans with cheese, and a churro.

Also, I'm glad everyone liked the explanation of La Nina and El Nino. Maybe I should do something where once a week I explain some weather phenomenon or historical weather event. How does that sound to everyone?

Sounds good, Willy.  You might even want to make a section of your web page a "learner's corner".

Oh, and perhaps you could add your web page to your profile - that creates a link at the bottom of each of your posts to make it easy for everyone to find your site.

I now understand El Nino and La Nina (Little Boy and Little Girl) at last. Thanks
Willy. When I look at the satellite page on weather.com, they show cloud temperatures. I have no idea how that affects the weather on the ground. That might be a tough one to explain so that I understand it.

That one person said said yesterday, "I've probably done enough damage here, and my own time can be better spent on threads where knowledge is being disseminated."

I guess that means you just go to the "Humor Thread".  I bet there's a whole lot of knowledge there to disseminated.

Sorry if I offended anyone. Yeah, Right!!

Actually, you did offend me. I happen to know "That one person" and he is a very good, kind person. Carl came to my rescue a couple of times in the past couple of weeks and now I'm returning the favor.

It really makes me sad that this is happening to the Depot Diner. In the past, I have always come into this thread to have fun and joke around with folks and I have made a lot of good friends in here. I'm sorry that it has all come down to what has been happening over the past couple of days.

I'd appreciate it if everyone here starts trying to treat each other with a bit more respect, or perhaps I will not be sticking around any longer either.

Oh yeah, I really admire your gracious exit, Kentucky Brian (Not!!). I'm sure we'll all miss you too. Disapprove [V]

Okaaaaaaay.....

Another day in VA - trying to store up some of this warmth to take back north with me.  Did manage to get in some trainwatching in - found a spot near the mall where I could watch NS kicking cars around their yard.

Off to VA Museum of Transport and the Link Museum tomorrow.

And on the road Friday - headed north and home.

I feel like I need to walk on eggshells right now, and I'm not even sure why.  But I've managed to develop a fairly thick skin over the years.

Every forum develops a personality over the years.  For better or worse, this forum has the character that it has.  At least Bergie allows us the freedom to banter and joke and even (gasp) get off topic now and then.  As with any community, there are bound to be rifts now and then.  When a rift develops, the community has two choices - make amends and reconcile, or split up and go their separate ways.  We each individually make that choice - sometimes in concert with talking things over with others, but still each individual choice.  Basta ya.

Nightrain, may I join you?
