hehe - I drive ~45 mpg car at 70 or so mph ^^ But - the fuel here is $4,50/gallon so it tends to help to decide to get a fuel efficient car [8D]

Last night, gas prices went up to $2.09 here in Manitowoc, WI. I was also told today that Milwaukee is now at $2.25/gallon! Prices are moving this way as well! Glad I filled up before they went up.

Yes it went up here as well now $2.19 for 87 octane. CNBC says oil is now over $55.00 per BRL on its way to $80.00. If they are correct $2.75 to $3.00 per gallon is right down the pike sorry to say. [:(]

The Swatch/Mercedes Smart Car is going to be offered here in the US, Finally. They will be sold initially in NY and LA and a couple other metro areas. Got to see these in Europe, they're all over the place there. Two seater, 80mph, 65mpg!!! you can fit 4 in the the place of one Hummer H1. I'm definetly test driving one when they get here! i want one so I can pimp it out into a street ricerocket , wing, flares, underside lights, obnoxious paint, HeheheIt, either that or I'm getting a old Fiat 500 to Hot Rod![8D]

Not a bad idea. On another (non RR related) board, though, someone pointed out that for the first century or so of organized sports in America, noone complained about using public funding for large stadiums (the LA coliseum and the late, lamented [by some] Cleveland Stadium that Art Modell complained about come to mind). Now lots do. By that reasoning, that poster went on, places like Central Park and Yellowstone should be sold off.

The gov will pry the steering wheels of my 4x4 V8s from my cold dead hands..... I'll live off ramen noodles if need be to pay any amount for gas/diesel. One thing I always wonder about is why people will #$%&@ about droppin 50bucks for a fillup, but will go out to eat everyother night, or a new PS2 game or whatever. If you don't want to pay big money for gas, get something smaller and make me worry less about some moron running into me causing damage. Well being a consumer society eating out generates jobs, taxes etc. & is good for the economy. Filling up the gas guzzler is sending $$$$$$ to our enemies. I guess that says it all. Right? [:(]

Personally I saw drive what ya like, like whatcha drive

If you want to drive a pigasaurus Hummer H2 that gets 9mpg downhill with a tailwind thats your choice,

All I ask is that when gas hit $3 a gallon, please keep a cork in the piehole when you're filling the tank. I'm so sick of hearing these whining soccer mom types be-hatching about how much cash it takes to fill thier Ford Excrement so they can drive thier kids all over town, Heres a radical Idea, buy a smaller car, and get your kids some [censored][censored][censored] BIKES, let them cart their own backsides around town and maybe they wont be so [censored] fat!

Hey if you didn't notice, the "biggest" "meanest" "gas guzzler" that I own is infact not. My diesel can squeeze out 20mpg on the highway (weighs 4tons), will burn alternitative fuels with no mods, and most of the Ford Excursions that get so much bad press have the same engine. I already experiment with waste cooking oil to reduce my dependance on crude. As soon as biodiesel made by AMERICAN FARMERS is available round here, I'll pay 10.00bucks a gallon to support that.

One other thing I dont get is the constant reference to the H2. IT"S NO FREAKIN DIFFERENT THAN A TAHOE. Don't see anyone talkin bout corvettes either, seems to get even worse milage. Thats ok, I don't really care what others think anymore.

Over here we pay the equivalent of $4.85/USgal (£0.85/litre). And it stops very few people from driving around in gas guzzling 4x4s

Why do I pick on the H2? Its a lot uglier than a Tahoe, Adrian! I will alway taunt the Hummer!!!! it looks too much like a Gobot not too.

... and the gas versions do get horrible milage...even downhill with a tailwind,

Dont take my comments about the Ford seriously, I just see so many of them I give them nicknames, So Ford has the Exploder, the Extrusion, the Excrement.

I'm a truck guy too, my Nissan Frontier with a V6 get 20mpg downhill with a tailwind. The difference is that I dont ask for any cheese with my whine while filling it up like so many others out here do. I knew what I was buying. Out here people dont buy big mondo-trucks & SUVs like the Excursions because they need them, they buy them because they're Fashion Accessories, then cry to high heaven when it finally dawns on them that they really do get a lot less milage than the Accord they traded in...[;)]

The H2 is an ugly peice of junk, but you know what? Maybe ten years from now when gas prices are so high you can get one REAL CHEAP !! and by then it will be even UGLIER !

I agree with ya on this one!! I don't like the H2 at all. I like the older miliatry style Hummers but the new ones are juck!!! I'm telling you the H2 must get 2 blocks to the gal. They are almost as bad as the KIA's that are running around.

Anyway about gas prices, they have no were to go but up in durring this time. :( Here in PA we pay $2.30 for gas. But, I'm not going to complain because, over in Europe they have to pay approx: 5 bucks for fuel.

Wow...a bunch of different opinions. By the way a Corvette is very capable of good milage on the open highway.....H2's get a lot of attention around here.

I wouldn't want to force anyone to drive/not drive any given vehicle. What I find sad is that you take even a 6.0 navistar (Powerstroke depending on the body), and its a waste of an engine. International is going to blow the doors off of it when they start producing the 4.5 (V-6). It seems that most American Car manufacturers are pretty short sided when it comes to getting the most from the package. What happen to Americans striving for the best. I guess as long as we have gas below $5.00 a gallon its not going to change. All over the rest of the world they answer the question of fuel-mile-hp, America just seems to fall more and more behind.

Just thought that we might inject some interesting facts into the discussion. BNSF spent 11% of its gross income on fuel. A trucking company spends approximately 22% of its income on fuel. Independent truckers tend to spend around 35% of their income on fuel these days. This means that for every 10 penny rise in fuel costs, the trains gain a 1 to 3 penny advantage on the cost of trucking.

The best thing that could happen to this country in $4.00/gallon gas. You would have to watch out for the trains that will appear overnight.

One disaster of an engine is/was the 6.0L. It just never got a fair shake and was waaaay rushed into production. The 6.0 is already on the chopping block, and with the complete redesign of the superduty in 07, there will be a 6.4L twin turbo to replace it.

The V6 diesel: Now heres a strange tale if there ever was one for Ford.

Through a VERY tangled web of contracts, emissions laws, money, hurt feelings, and just plain stupidity the only thing so far to get the V6 diesel is the cabover box trucks. I can't wait for a diesel f150, expy, and other new stuff. I just hope it comes soon...

Just plan your trips to maximize the range of your vehicle over several days to a week and decide which trips are important and not so important.

I recall back in the early 1970's we had a Chrysler that was near 30 feet long and had a monsterous gas tank. At .25 cents per gallon it really hurt to fill that barge up. When the gas hit over .75 and the engine's ability to get good (*GASP!! GOOD!? yea.. if you think 7 miles to gallon is good) gas mileage declined.

That very large cash burner was finally retired simply because it got too expensive to drive. (Or park in the light of the new compact car parking tower craze that swept the inner cities)

I think that gas prices will continue to march towards the 2.50 mark or even 3.00 a gallon. Then we will sort out those who are able to maintain very large vehicles that guzzle gas and those who are willing to reconsider the useage and possibly the model of vehicle used to go about the life.

Eating out every night and buying trinkets 4 times a week in walmart probably will not be as necessary in face of rising gas prices.

There are as previously posted in this thread engines are being produced to run on fuels that are at least burnable. Perhaps finally huge gas costs will pu***he USA towards a serious hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle.

As of right now there are two Foreign import vehicles sold down in Little Rock capable of providing 650-700 miles on 15 dollars worth of gas as well as comfortable environment at highway speeds for about $24,000

I dont yet see a stampede towards similar vehicles. Perhaps today's very large passenger vehicles can be refitted with hybrid drives to give those 50 dollar a tank soccer moms a chance to get thru the week on one fill up.

What's sad is the auto manufacturers don't do much to improve gas mileage. We had an 8-cylinder 1994 Dodge full-size van that got about 20-24 mpg. We now have a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan with a 6-cylinder that gets 20-24 mph.

The problem is more deep rooted then that. If we just say drop out oil imports by 10% a year OPEC/Russia will just drop the amount they produce so the price of gas stays right where it is. The one & only way to win this battle is to save enough energy to make us totally self sufficent. That mean we would not have to buy 1 barrel of oil from countries that are committed to weaken us. [:(]
