Went to the big town of Toledo today to use some gift cards.Cn was asking to leave Walbridge to go back to Lang yard when we got there.Ns crossed some trains at Vickers as well.16 G had quite a few flat cars with John Deere tractors.Took the back way home through Wauseon.Ns decided to run some more trains.358 had 2 Up units and an Ns high hood.31 M had 1 dash 9 loco on the front and 8000ft and 20 tons if I heard right.Have a couple chores to do.We have tomorrow off for Presidents day.
Extra day off today. The NDW was working and crossed the diamond at Fc.Followed the 2026 "santa fe" west to Cecil Ohio. There they switched things around and went down the former Cincinnati Northern to work La Farge.Back in Defiance they have some track set off for the new fertilizer plant.Nothing has been worked yet.Chores to do.
Balmy here today - +44.9°F here as I write this. But - cold will return, and bring several inches of snow with it later in the week.
Wheeee!
Hopefully we won't have any weather issues for the safety seminar we're holding next Sunday.

Sounds like a pretty significant snow event coming up across the great lakes. Wisconsin is talking 15", we're expecting 9" here in northern New York. Old Man Winter isn't giving up just yet.
Actually, it's been a pretty dry winter - we could use the snow.

They are calling for 90 in NE Florida on Thursday. In the 80's Tuesday & Wednesday.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I'll be fine.
Well this morning we had 3 boxcars sitting outside the door at work.I did see the 2 other cars that were inside. When we left work the boxcars were gone. Not sure if Ns picked the other ones up or not.Going to get nasty here.Guessers say freezing rain.Need to get some chores done.
I've been getting on a FB page for the area of the county where my mother grew up. I've got a fair amount of info from Mom's "files," so I'm sharing.
It's fun seeing the reactions, and recognizing some of the family names from friends of my cousins, etc.
I have an entire suitcase my sister sent home with my daughter when they visited a few years ago. I'm supposed to give it to the local historical society, but I suspect I'll be doing a bunch of scanning and posting first.
Well, we had one 70F day in the SFBA yesterday but some serious weather is coming soon. SFGate reports that mountain peaks up and down the state probably will see snow.

They're talking about ice at the house, I dealt with the snow Monday from Minneapolis to Green Bay. One inch of snow and all the steering wheel holders jackknife........
Heading to Muskogee, so everything should stay liquid, at least until I get close to Sterling, IL, Thursday afternoon.........

Apparently, they are talking several feet of snow around MSP.
We're looking at around a foot, but western NY is apparently right on the line and NWS doesn't know what to tell them.

Have the Great Lakes frozen yet?
The swamp is getting filled big time.No ice for us here yet thankfully. The great lakes have partially froze over in some spots but it has been too warm. The lake effect spots have been getting plenty of extra from the lakes.Still have the 2 cars in our building.Ns has spotted 4 cars on the line next to our spur. Those go across the street.Did hear an Ns go through town after work.Going to stay inside and keep warm.
BaltACDHave the Great Lakes frozen yet?
No.
I just saw an NWS ice coverage map of the Great Lakes. They are pretty much open except for some bays and the like.
Navigation on the St Lawrence is planned to open on schedule on March 22, and the big hold up will be getting the buoys out. The river is mostly open as well.
This event will be chiefly fed with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, believe it or not. My winds right now are out of the northeast, which negates any possibility of lake effect. Our snow forecast varies from 7 to 11 inches. Maybe more.
The snowblower is ready to go, and the main roads have already been pre-treated.
We had a little burst of snow around noon, but the big event isn't supposed to kick off until later this afternoon.

If you're not using it yet, some folks in Tehachapi could use it. The depot webcam shows more snow on the ground that I've ever seen there, wow. RR is open and a WB freight just came through.
Nearby SR-58 has just closed with high winds and the ever present low experience semi-truck drivers auditioning for demolition derby .
As expected, Flagstaff has been covered since yesterday and I saw Kingman get some for a hour last night (didn't stick).

When I was stationed in Oklahoma City in the early 1970's we got about 6" of snow in one storm between Christmas and New Years. The entire city ground to a halt.
If you have access to the VR cams, check out Pulaski, NY. This storm isn't going to be a lake effect event, but they still get a lot of the white stuff.
Our town plows haven't come out yet as we've only gotten a dusting at this point. The 8" or 9" we're forecast for won't be a challenge unless there's a lot of wind involved.
West coast snow update:
- Light snow seen falling in Chehalis, not seen that before. Local temp is 33F so we may see it stick.
- Truckee has plenty but they know how to deal with it.
- Light snow in Cajon Pass has just started, also a novelty. Forecast for SoCal mountains is three to five feet, that is gonna be interesting.
We've been quite lucky. We got about two inches of rain from yesterday afternoon until this morning. Ice became a major issue as you headed north toward the Wisconsin state line.
Time to go out and kick the thermometer. 11 below here and we might hit zero by noon. (Weather liars are all covering their butts on how they missed their guesses on the low temperature) ....Truckers in the high country managed to shut down I-70 and some other major roads for failure to carry chains or chain-up. (hope they like the fines they will be slapped with)
We went from sixty to below zero in 36 hours with snow. The warm ground melted the early snow and it's a skating rink in many places.
My "snow board," actually a stone table, had six inches on it this morning, despite winds of up to 29 MPH overnight. There was a drift in front of my garage, which is almost always the case with storms such as this, as the wind is out of the northeast and eddies around the garage.
The worst of the snow is pretty much over - the danger now is the rain/snow line migrating north and bringing ice. Syracuse and Buffalo have had scattered power outages. Posts from friends in Michigan show some pretty significant icing.
Probably worse, if one has to be outside, is the wind chill - currently +5°F and forecast to dip below zero tonight.
I topped off the bird feeders last night - they've been hitting them pretty hard this morning.
Made a trip to the hardware store - truck thermometer showed 97.
Still cars on the dock today.Went to the store after work.Plenty of people were shopping.Glad tomorrow is Friday.Need to go give hugs this weekend.
Had a half inch of ice at the house, only lost power twice, four hours each time. My parents weren't as lucky, they were out for 23 hours. All the flickering and off and on eventually killed the modem Wednesday, new one arrived from AT&T today.
We had a little ice here - nothing debilitating. Points south got more, and it did cause some problems. Friends in MI made a lot of posts on FB about ice there, and a firefighter was electrocuted on the west side of the state.
The trace of freezing rain actually helped with clearing the driveway since it made the snow on the driveway a little crusty and it peeled right up off the pavement. The sun came out and at least the end of the driveway is now bare and dry.
Working on tying up loose ends for Sunday's safety seminar. Still have to go through a lot of toner and ink to print handouts, then get them assembled.
Morning
Still had the cars on the dock yesterday when I left work.Ns did shuffle some more cars around uptown.Boots got a bit muddy as we took care of some big branches in the back yard yesterday.Mother nature sent a bit of snow overnight.Inside chores today.Hugs tomorrow.
Stay safe
update
Contractors are out tamping and ballasting the switch for the new fertilizer plant west of Defiance. Its a left switch coming off the NDW.Also saw some Csx trains as well.
- There was snow at 'higher' elevations all around the bay. People were sledding and building snowmen in the Berkeley and Oakland hills. None seen on my side.
- SoCal is still getting snowed on, both I-5 (Grapevine) and I-15 (Cajon) have been closed off and on. Plenty of the white stuff seen on the Cajon cam and it is sticking for now.
- EDIT: a Cajon/Hesperia cam operator has been active all day, using the P-T-Z capability to show 360 degree, beautiful views of the local terrain and mountains covered with snow. Catch it while you can!
Early morning traffic on VR Cajon cam capture.
Snowed a bit here - made driving into town a little dicey. Some folks didn't compensate and paid the price - I passed two fender benders on the way in.
I think I have everything ready for my seminar tomorrow. Now if all the speakers will show up, and folks will show up to learn, we'll be all set.
