Had a good "Superheroes and Princesses" train today - even had some guests from Britain.

Greetings from Cincinnati, where we're attending a special conference of the C&O Historical Society.  The Society was established (though not incorporated) in 1969, 50 years ago, and I'm considered to be one of the founding members.  (My membership number, in fact, is 44.)

My health was good enough to allow me to make the trip, but I'm not going to participate in the prime field trip of the conference, a tour of Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops.  Instead, we're going to stay close to the hotel, spending much of the day hoping for CSX trains at Glendale, dining at the Cock & Bull, and trying to keep a few fries for myself Wink.

(shucks - gonna miss you two by a week in the old hood. Have a great time in the upper Mill Creek Valley. If you get a chance, go for at least desert at the Grand Finale.(half a mile west on Sharon Rd at 747))

You have the remains of NYC-Sharon Yard and the PRR/N&W Richmond-Muncie lie the other direction.

MC, we ate so well at lunch that there was no room for dessert...not even the "growing boy'!  It was great to see Joe, Momma, and Matt again and spend a little time with them.  CSX was cooperative, sending plenty of trains north, including a munitions train with lots of TPDX flat cars.  I will be kept busy for a while.

My week of dog-sitting is drawing to a close.  Zoe does love her Papa- of course, I spoil her rotten.

Daughter posted some pictures on-line from their vacation, including a short video of granddaughter playing in the sand and singing (although I don't know what she was singing).  Showed it to the dog and she expressed great interest...  Shouldn't tease her like that...

The pup goes home tomorrow - she'll be excited.

Meanwhile, packing up for the trip west - Deshler (and dinner with Joe and family), then up to Michigan for "Milford Memories."

Even found a hamfest in Port Huron on Sunday.   Railroading, old friends, and ham radio.  Should be a fun week.

Of course you do, it's right there in the job description.  My granddaughter just finished four days at Lollapalooza, enjoying it immensely.  She leaves for Michigan next month for her freshman year at Hope College.  Where did the time go??

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

Moral of the story:  you can party the summer away, but there's still Hope!

(That campus has grown quite a bit, and is eminently accessible by Amtrak for us Chicagoans!)

 but there's still Hope!

A home improvement store I shop at has a checkout supervisor named Hope.

One day I quipped that if there was a problem and she wasn't there, there was no Hope.

No one got the joke...

Just checking to make sure the levels of un-railroady fun in here are in check.

Carry on my wayward sons.  For there'll be peace when you are done.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

What are the two cars directly behind the tender?

I think you are talking about the auxiliary tenders carrying more water, also called canteens.   I've never noticed those two "boxes" on top of each one.  Does anyone know their purpose?

By the way, I've been wondering what the car near the middle of the train is that has that big "dome" near one end.   Is it a power car?

I believe that is correct re the last question.  In other threads/conversations with Jeff, he noted that the diesel unit along for the ride is not even used for HEP, just dynamic braking when needed.

To provide HEP, a locomotive has to have electrical equipment able to generate the required voltages and frequencies.  Freight locomotives do not contain that equipment.

It is indeed a power car.  It's a former dynamometer car converted into a power car.  (I saw it when it first showed up at the Heritage Park car shop in Council Bluffs for conversion.  It plainly said dynamometer on it's side.)

The dust cloud I saw must've been Joe and Carl Bugging out. Headed from Cincy to St. Louis after lunch. (Can Indiana DOT screw up the freeways with shutdowns and lane closures any more than what I saw Friday? Too many cars and not enough road does not work for Hoosiers used to driving in circles at high speed.) High School reunion #45 came and went - Everybody's appearance changed drastically since last time....The three letter A and O words were not allowed.

My trip across the state in May had the road surface knocking the fillings out of the teeth I used to have.  Shifted the race car on the trailer and shifted the equipment I attach to the trailer with ratchet straps.

My classes 55th was this weekend.  I did not attend.  Went to the 25th and 50th - at the 25th I recognized most that attended; the 50th 'Who are all the old people?'  I am certain they thought the same about me, even though I don't see it.  [/sarcasm]
