BaltACD Speed doesn't kill - sudden stops do!
A factoid lost back when they were busy lowering speed limits was that most fatal accidents occur at speeds under 45 MPH.
Then there was the fellow who decided to move because he heard that most accidents occur within 25 miles of home...

Quoting tree68 "Then there was the fellow who decided to move because he heard that most accidents occur within 25 miles of home..." That's like the fellow who heard there was a traffic jam downtown, so he went downtown, taking a loaf of bread with him so he could make jam sandwiches.
65-70 years ago, such a fellow would be characterized as being greatly deficient in intelligence.

Afternoon
Went and looked at Csx.They have a railgrinder keeping the caboose company in the Defiance yard.Trains all around trying to get by Deshler from what I heard on the scanner.Deck has tables and chairs put back on.Grass is getting crunchy.Could use some rain now.

Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
There, a couple of days of railroading in the books.
Ridership was decent, weather was great Saturday, kinda damp on Sunday.
Saturday night brought some interesting weather in the north country. Weather out of the west usually gets moderated by Lake Ontario. No so that which comes out of the northwest - ie, out of Ontario and across the St Lawrence River. The system generated a plethora of severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado warning (radar indicated - none actually spotted, to my knowledge).
By the time it got to the Old Forge area it was oh-dark-thirty and I slept right through it.
Some minor damage and a couple of power outages. Had a tree down in the road near my house, but I haven't found out exactly where, yet. My FD was called to it.
Started out my Monday morning amateur radio net today by suggesting that folks might want to dust off their copy of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.
Pleasant temperatures and hardly a cloud in the sky - and for most of the week, to boot!
Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north (for me that's about 10 miles), or if you're old school, Happy Dominion Day!

Triple H's in effect here in Nw Ohio.Ns still has the ballast train in the siding. There was also an eastbound mixed freight waiting on track 2.Chores to do here.Matt gets to do dishes tonight.
There may have been a bright golden haze, but they'd be lucky if the corn is as high as an elephant's toenail.

DeggestyWas there a bright golden haze on the meadow?
It just ocurred to me-- most of last week we had a yellowish haze due to Saharan dust blowing across the Atlantic from Africa. It's cleared up now, but we could use some rain.

That's the case here - "knee high by the Fourth of July" is just a dream in most cornfields around here.

We had a similar event some years ago, although it was smoke from wildfires in the north of Quebec. Even brought along a slight smell of smoke. Caused a few "vicinity calls" as people saw the glow of the orangish sodium vapor lights and smelled (and saw) smoke. Made the sky a strange color, too.
As for rain - we've got a few billion acre feet we'd like to send you, if we had a way...
Scattered rain here in Nw Ohio.Ns still has the hopper cars in the siding.Chores to do here. One more day of work this week.
I would guess that was very good show. We ( my bride, ) & me remember those days. They were the best of the best, a shame Brian had to drown.
Y6bs evergreen in my mind
Concerning corn around here, most is past knee high. Even some fields in Nebraska, that I though wouldn't get planted, now have knee high corn. And some places the water is still receding and won't produce a crop this year.
It seems like one day they are just preparing the fields and planting. Soon the plants can be seen to sprout. Almost over night it seems like they're knee high or higher. Then within the blink of the eye, they're full grown and starting to dry out. Then comes harvest time and the fields are bare again. The snow comes, and eventually goes and it all starts over. The year flies by so fast it seems. The older I get the faster time seems to fly by. No matter whether having fun or not.

How far can your fire pumps shoot water?
By the way, here's an impressive number: The flow in the Mississippi River past New Orleans at flood stage (It's just below that now.) is 1.25 million cubic feet per second.
We've had an inordinate amount of rain so far this year, some rain on almost every day for the last couple of months. Fortunately, we had the foundation patched last fall so the basement is staying dry.
Paul of Covington How far can your fire pumps shoot water?
If we're pushing a fire stream (through a nozzle), something on the order of a couple hundred feet.
When pumping through a hose (large diameter - 5") we can go up to 8,000 feet between pumpers if we want to maintain 1,000 gallons per minute...
Of course, we have to factor in elevation changes, too.
It would take a lot of pumpers to get the water down to you... Given 7-8 mile spacing between fire stations, there would be a lot of mutual aid involved.
But the folks up here sure would be glad to see it gone.
I think the agency that enacted the new plan may realize they messed up, but they can't figure out a way to back it out and still save face.
As I mentioned before, it appears that environmentalists may have played a large role in creating the new plan, to the detriment of property owners along the lake and river.
Ns sent a westbound stack train after work. They also had an autorack train waiting and the hoppers were still in the siding.Came home and mowed the yard. While finishing up mother nature sent a scattered shower.Felt good.Have chores to do here.Matt has to finish packing for his trip.He also needs to finish a project for his class since he'll be gone next week.
While at the post office this morning, I watched as a manifest started pulling out of town. The last three units were brand new GEs heading west. I first saw the new paint, then noticed they were all consecutively numbered. UP 7059-7060-7061.
I went to a crossing on the west end of town. They were making a switching move, not actually ready to leave town. (When operating with PTC, once it's intialized, it doesn't recognize the first signal until you are within 1500 feet and requires restricted speed until the leading wheels are past said signal. That's why I thought they were leaving town.) Another railfan I know, past president of the CNWHS, also stopped to take photos. He, like myself had noticed the fresh paint and consecutive numbers.
They were dead-in-consist, no diesel fuel in the tank sight glass, just along for the ride.
Got a heads up that Csx was running the local today. They brought the caboose with them as they shoved cars for scrap into omni.Three of them were mow ballast hoppers.Need to get stuff ready for G+G's hose.Matt can visit fo a bit but he gets to do dishes. He will have more tomorrow night as Defiance has a redo for the fireworks.(got rained out last night).
Ma Nature got into the act - Single large rainstorm (T&L) parked itself inside the belt freeway and just pounded the crap out of Denver for two hours with pea sized to ping-pong ball sized hail and then quit at dark. (nothing else on radar for the whole state -odd) Locals are now blowing-up the 'hood with illegal Wyoming fireworks. Cat has gone into hiding and the dog is attacking the source of the noise.
Matt is finishing up project.Stuff for trip is ready he just needs to pack it in the bags.Did errands and chores today.Trimmed back the jungle.Gussers say Fireworks redo might get rained out again tonight.Deshlers might get some rain as well tomorrow.Stay tuned.
Some folks around here had a Glorious FOrth--skiing--one resort (Snowbird) was open and the evening news reports showed many people (some skimpuly dressed) enjoying going down hill on their skis.
Good Morning
Matt is on his way on his trip with the church group.Csx was busy at Deshler. They decided to put 2 trains together to run on some. The fireworks were nice last night as well.Mother nature has sent us rain this morning.Going to get things at the store.Back to work tomorrow.
The fireworks at Deshler were good - I watched them on the webcam. Only fireworks I've really seen this year.
Couple of good days on the railroad - I think the rain on Saturday actually brought them out.
Down day today - nothing firm on the schedule.
tree68The fireworks at Deshler were good - I watched them on the webcam. Only fireworks I've really seen this year.
Tehachapi had a good 20-minute show, too. Camera pointed right at it. I caught a little of the nearby show from in front of the house, a little blocked but had a good view somewhat a bit over a mile away.
We are about 10 miles inland from Sea World but we could in summers past hear the nightly fireworks pretty well because I guess the sound channels right up Mission Valley. This summer they only do it on Saturday nights, it seems.
good evening
Ns was clear when I left work.Came home and took care of the yardwork. Some wild rasberry stalks were shooting into the yard zone so I trimmed them back.Guessers are calling for another heat wave next week.
Got out on the 4th to exercise the camera (Canon A-1). I had a pleasant outing with a few interesting finds at various locales.
evening
Ns had the local uptown when I left work. Here in Defiance saw a few trains and the local as well while running errands.Paul some of the Csx crews are upset. They have to take train q 350 and work Garrett,Barr yard and get it to the belt railway in 12 hours. This train has been 10k plus long lately.Chores to do here
Well, the oldest continuously operating County Fair in the country (202 years) is underway. The big event tonight was the parade. I was there as president of the county Firefighters Association to take salutes from the marching units.
Some of the high school bands were decent.
The Italian sausage and lemonade I had afterwards was a tad expensive, but I expect that at such events. And I was hungry.
