Tomorrow is the first day of summer.Ns sent it's OCS train by my work today while I was inside working.I did take brother out after work and we had a good time in Butler Indiana.Saw plenty of new NS units come by as well.Tomorrow we have errands to run.The weekend outlook looks like spring-wet.

Today is allegedly the first day of summer. The only good thing so far is that my morning train was almost 10 minutes early arriving at CUS.
Summer officially arrives shortly after noon (eastern) today. Last night I attended a concert by a Beach Boys "tribute" band. They were actually pretty good. It's got to be tough playing in front of an audience of 60-somethings who may know the words and music better than you do...
Gotta get things found and loaded up for the amateur radio "field day" this weekend. Hopefully band conditions will be good and we'll get lots of contacts.

Haven't flown my drone for a while, so I took it out to the back yard for some practice. It is now nestled at the top of a tree, a la Charlie Brown. Not sure how I'm going to get it down - too high for a ladder and it's not in an easily accessible spot regardless...
I was planning to use it to help deploy antennas for the field day. There are several athletic field light posts there - the drone could have carried a leader line over the top.
I was thinking about buying a new one, anyhow...
Rained overnight at The Glen - we were group 3 - track was still damp. Let discretion be the better part of valor and watched the group.
PA announcer announced the 'official start' of Summer.
Ran the Qualifying session after lunch - Dry Track, Had a drivers meeting after the Q session - came out from the Media Room at WGI and everything was WET. A shower moved through. Felt some spitting rain the rest of the afternoon with alternate Sun and Clouds.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Is it really summer? The low here this motning was 42 degrees F.--and it will stil be cold through Sunday.

Well heck NDG got snow, posted pics of String Lining. Furnace still comes on overnight here... lows mid to high 30's F. Good for sleeping though!

Did see a few trains on Csx today.Worked on some projects too.Matt got some couplers for the rail cars.We had to send an antenna back because it won't fit his scanner.Friend came over and helped re-hang the door to our train room.The spring in the door handle stopped working so we decided to replace the hinges as well.It's all on the level now.Tomorrow my sister will still be 13 years older than me.I will start a 365 day journey to 50.Hopefully I can find some trains.

52 degrees F here this morning.
45 degrees here and snow in the high country between Johnny and I. Snow at Aspen, Vail, and Winter Park/ Moffat Tunnel. (Steamboat got a foot?) Just damp around here. I'll work under roof today.
Still lots of rain in KS (my 2nd home) as I prefer CO or Prescott, AZ. But age dictates that I live near family that can care for me (somewhat).
Kansas wheat crop is late this year because of the weather.

10 PM news last night listed current "feels-like" temps in the mid nineties. That's one problem with high humidity--it doesn't cool down much at night. And I don't think they're expecting that cold wave to get down here.
Well went with plan B today and went to Deshler.Some trains that you thought would go straight turned and went the C&O way to Toledo in Fostoria.Some UP power made a quick turn at North Baltimore.Came in on Q192 and went back to Chicago on Q 191.Tomorrow it's sisters and nieces turns for birthdays.Going to get the final paperwork for Matt's mission trip as well.
Well, amateur radio field day 2019 is over. We made a lot of contacts, including as far west as AZ. I tried for a couple of Hawaii contacts, but couldn't quite get them.
It's a long day/night - basically 24 hours straight - but it's fun trying to make as many contacts as possible. We had folks doing conventional phone (voice), digital, and even Morse code.
Once I got home, it was snooze time...

Larry, your mentioning the American Radio Relay League brought back memories from years and years back. I do not doubt that some members would rejoice to have some old contact cards. My brothers had a couple of their books, which I thorougly perused. They also had some copies of CQ and QST.; I do not know if these are still published.I never did learn the International Code, though I thought about it. I did build a superheterodyne, using surplus military parts primarily. I also built a power supply, which I used with an amplifier that I built--using a speaker from an old Atwater Kent radio; I iused the electromagnet on the speaker as the choke in the power supply. Did you ever see an ozone-filled rectifier at work?--it has a beautiful blue-purple glow.
My last two years in high school, I made pocket money getting other people's radios to work--primarily by replacing burnt out tubes, though I did replace other components from time to time. One of the most interesting radios was the one in the post office at home--the postmaster asked if I would look at the radio, and invited me in to the inner sanctum (only employees allowed) to pick the radio up and to put it back after I had replaced a tube.

Nah - rented a lift. Had some other work to do with the lift as well, so it wasn't quite as bad.
Never could have gotten a ladder truck where the drone was anyhow, never mind that we don't have one.
If you've never worked on such an aerial device, you don't realize how much they move when extended. I have a safety harness, and felt a good deal more comfortable wearing it than not.
I've been up 100' on a fire department tower ladder a number of times - 100' doesn't sound like much on the ground, but it's sure a long way up...

Mother nature sent a small shower this morning.Looked like Ns had a herzog ballast train on Main 2 after work today.Came home and mowed the swamp.Might go into town and see a Fleetwood Mac tribute band.We'll see what Stacey says when she gets home.

Working on a unique project. We're doing a "boot drive" at the fire department next week - standing in the road (with permission) and asking for donations.
Instead of holding a fire boot, I'm assembling pseudo-boots using old badminton raquets. Kinda like a basket as used in church, but the "basket" will resemble a fire boot. Still working the kinks out of the pattern, but they should be interesting...
