Followed a semi with an empty heavy equipment lowboy up I-25 yesterday. Wasn't quite empty, strapped down over the rear axle was a large yellow Tonka-Toy dump truck. Somewhere,, Mookie was smiling.
Watching western Kansas with some interest. There is a fight in the courts and STB pitting Kansas Law, Federal Law, local land owners and trail advocates against each other with national implications. The abandoning railroad's real estate arm and its lawyers apparently also have to learn a lesson.
1.5 -2 inches of rain and hail yesterday - about 10% of our yearly total. Think it's safe to take the water wings off the scottie today.

Actually, it was an end beam on the car itself, one that held the coupler in place. Took them a while to sort out how to deal with it...
Apparently, the car had been repaired before...

Just checking in quickly after having been to the Land of No Internet for a week. It was lovely up there, and the party we went to on Saturday was the best ever (not exactly a high-school class reunion; we just got together to celebrate everyone turning 70 or thereabouts...yes, there was cake!).The Land of No Trains had plenty of freight cars for me this time. What looked like a train ready to go (needed power and an EOT, but was on the main line) was sitting at Baldwin, Michigan. I walked it and was able to check out some cars very closely (there are stamped numbers on some cars that give a good clue as to their precise origin). Plenty of freight cars, but not much out of the ordinary, at Ludington.A day later, we went down to Grand Rapids for a quilt show. Going home, we passed through the junction known to the railroads as Fuller (back in the day it was where the GR&I/PRR and C&O/Pere Marquette used to cross the Grand Trunk Western...now it's Marquette Rail and the Mid-Michigan Railroad, and the crossing has been automatic-interlocked). There were a lot of cars there, too, and I got some good data off some covered hoppers (not as close-up as at Baldwin, but still usable). Muskegon had plenty of UTLX T108 tank cars in storage, awaiting upgrading.Back to civilization yesterday, I found a new series of flat cars for the Lake Michigan & Indiana (LMIC), and some information on some new-but-already-reported UTLX tank cars. So for the "no-trains" trip, I'm going to have about a 12-page report in a couple of days.Tomorrow I have my one-month-post-TAVR checkup. I'm expecting no complications and the lifting of most of the restrictions I'm still under. One of my medications (I assume) is giving me an annoying rash; maybe we can get that resolved as well.Today I will be hopping on my bike and running errands around town: drug store, bank, and post office. All three are close to the tracks, so my fingers are crossed.

evening
Ns was clear when I left work. There was an electrical truck working near the power lines across the road from our parking lot.Came home and took care of the yardwork.Chores to do inside. This nice weather can stay as long as it wants.
Much needed rain overnight - .85" so far today. My yard has a lot of clay - there are cracks I think a small child could disappear in...
Too wet today to finish planting a hosta I got from my daughter. They're having a patio put in to replace a deck and two of them had to go. So they're mine now!
Ns had a westbound when I left work.Errands are done. Not sure of any weekend plans as of yet.Mother Nature might send some rain.Dogs vs Cats out at the Defiance high school tonight.Chores to do.
Got the hostas in - have to go out and soak them down good with the hose tonight - and it'll probably rain.
Today, the wife and I returned from our vacation trip to Hawaii. We visited the Hawaiian Railway Society and rode their train. A remnant of the Oahu Railway and Land Company.
On our flight to Hawaii, the man sitting next to my wife was a navy officer moving to a new assignment on Oahu. He had been assigned to submarine, and while still being a submariner his new assignment didn't have him assigned to a specific Sub. He said he would still have to go out to sea, but only for shorter evaluation type cruises.
Anyway, my wife told him that I worked for a railroad and that I'm a railfan. He said his last assignment had been to the USS Scranton. He gave me a decal that had the Sub's crest on it. A picture of a Submarine with a steam engine pulling a train imposed over it.
www.combatindex.com/hardware/detail/sea/ssn756_data.html
He said it was chosen because of Scranton having the Steamtown National Historic Site.
While at the Hawaiian Railway Society, I was talking with one of the volunteers in model railroad display. He introduced me to a couple of other guys. One of them, whom I didn't get a chance to talk to for too long (he was leaving for the day) looked familiar. After he left, the volunteer I'd been talking to said he worked, or had worked, over for the US Park Service at the USS Arizona Memorial and was one of their experts on the subject. Then I realized who he was. I've seen him on the History Channel (back when it had history on it) on documentaries about Pearl Harbor and the Arizona.
You never know who you'll run into.

Well, that was so long ago, I don’t think anyone would blame you for not making the connection right away!
(at least Daniel M. still keeps investing his time and helping out with the mind candy)
Morning
Yesterday in Deshler was good.Worked outside in the park and inside the museum.Csx cleaned up ties on the Nw wye.Sent a westbound with a brand new Up engine on the point. Also had a railfan who brought his own MOW truck. He went to Montana to get it and it was BN green.Mookie was smiling .Mother nature cancelled Matt's group carwash for today.Stuff to catch up on here.
Morton our friend ask me, if water restrictions are in place, and it rains , can we still water ??. Morty is just 13 yrs. He will be a Rhodes scollor some day.
Y6bs evergreen in my mind
Nice day on Sunday to help out (amateur radio) with a running race (two simultaneously, actually - 18.12 miles and a half marathon). Spending over four hours standing in the road was tiring though.
Basically took today off, completely.
No problem with water here. Got 1.61" of rain overnight and this morning, and the lake and St Lawrence River are still above normal...
100 degrees here yesterday (football weather?)...no rain for the last three weeks - think we are about due.
Off to BLM today to look for filing map for Boise, Nampa & Owyhee RR (OSL) ....Odd that local Idaho BLM office can't find record of it and the railroad was there 15 years before anyone homesteaded or took out a patent.
Had errands and chores to do yesterday. Mother nature came through overnight and boomed and banged.Work calls.Soon it will be time to give more hugs.
Ns was uptown working after work.Chores to do.
