Mookie - It's safe to come out of the cellar now.
Shovelled 8" of wet heart attack snow off the driveway. Glad I had not planted yet.
Freeways are giant stupid zones this morning in Denver.
Forecast high for Tuesday is 93F.
Four inches of snow on the ground (grass & Dirt) here at the house.
Well, the Mookie is speechless! This almost never happens!
Lincoln is pretty much dead center in the county. They have been having wall-to-wall weather about storms moving this way from the west. I am watching my own radar and listening to the police/fire channel. NWS issued a tornado warning for nw corner of our county - pretty long way from Lincoln.
Sirens in way south Lincoln went off. Nothing down by UNL, in north Lincoln, which would be a whole lot closer than way south Lincoln! Nothing in our neighborhood - we are dead center town.
Fire asked why. Dispatch was clueless what was going on other than the warning in NW corner. I was with them on that one. But then, they woke us up one night with a siren and then went oops, false alarm, go back to sleep.
Then right at the height of mass hysteria on tv - they interrupt for about 3-4 political ads.
I shut the tv off and will rely on police/fire and my own radar.
Looks like this massive storm will wave when it goes by us. But lots of damage in other small towns. Rain is doubtful for us.

We are getting hammered here...the rains hit about an hour ago, and we're at over an inch in the gauge already. Over the same amount of time, the temperature has dropped from 81 to 64.My kids were occupied, so I took their mother to the park by myself this afternoon, where just about every other family in many states had the same idea. We left the park going in opposite directions--she to the Historical Society's Carriage House, and I to the tracks, where two eastbound freights were lined up. I didn't have long to wait--a manifest came slowly through on Track 1 (lots of frac sand cars), and a stack train much more quickly on Track 2. I suspect the stacker got to Elmhurst first, because the signal at Grace behind the manifest didn't change to Approach until the stacker had also disappeared around the curve. After the signal at Grace changed to Advance Approach, then Clear, on Track 1, I left to go back to the Carriage House. Pat and I then did a little shopping (couple of grandchildren's birthdays coming up). We missed the inbound scoot, then got blocked by another eastbound stack train, but were able to clear the crossing before the westbound scoot came through.

All we got was a decent rain this morning - little to no noise.
Nebraska has some rotating clouds moving down Hwy 6 to the northeast. If there is damage done, it will be west of us about 30-45 min. But it has about an hour to travel before it gets within smelling distance of Lincoln and we should be ok - maybe not even get any more rain.
It has passed over a main line for BNSF and followed the main line east for awhile. The towns along Hwy 6 were named by the railroad - Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont, Geneva, Harvard, etc. (pattern...)
Would not want to be out in the open country - feel pretty safe here.
Those old pumpers - wasn't that what they used on Keystone Kops? Might be a little before your time, but I remember them trying to put out a "fire" in true Keystone Kop fashion.
Talked to my oldest and only daughter this morning. She said south edge of Lincoln had tornado sirens going off. I am inclined to think they were probably more for the Roca/Hickman area - south of Lincoln just a little way. Nothing in town - and we live about 4 blocks from one.
Had lunch trackside! Tried to see an old CN motor, but the coal train was pigging up the view. So just saw the colors go by between the cars. Darn! Don't get much foreign power here. And yes, I had food in my hands. Got to lure those trains out somehow...
Did my "sonly" duty by calling Mom this AM to wish her a Happy Mother's Day. I always forget to buy cards for pretty much every suitable event...
She's in AZ, I'm in NY. Can't exactly take her out to dinner....
Looks like Madam LaMook might have gotten an "all natural" wake up call this morning, courtesy of Mother Nature...
Got the rest of the materials for the awning project yesterday, so after lunch, that's the project. And while I'm waiting for the stain to set, I can work on digging out the lawn mower. The grass is rapidly reaching mowing length...
We're supposed to see some rain early in the weeks, the remnants of what's in the middle of the country right now.
Ms Mook - a great video from our antique apparatus muster last year was pumping a hand engine (with the handles on the side that get pushed up and down). One youngster was taken right off the ground when the "brake" on that side went up.
Soup's all warmed up. Time to eat!

Quick note, before I head out to join one of the mothers in my life.Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers out there! I hope you're treated very well today by your offspring. As for the rest of you...happy Mother's Day to you, too. You've all had mothers at one time or another--please do good by them!
Tree: I think one of your "firemen" comes up a little short.
Quite a difference between then and now.
Denver to get 6 inches of snow tomorrow? Wash some feathers - ahem?
Must be nice outside - nobody's here!
After our SPAAMFAA meeting today, we got out our "new" piece of apparatus for a wash and to exercise it a bit.
"New" is a relative thing, though. In reality, it's 130 years old this year. Amazingly, after years in storage, it still managed to pump some water.
One of our future members gave it a go:

This Remington "Howe Patent" fire engine is intended to be operated by four horses or twenty-four men. As you can see from the video (assuming you can see it), it pumps by turning a large gear (under the dome) which drives three piston pumps, as compared to the usually man-powered pumper which is operated by moving handles up and down.
As near as we can figure, there are only four fire engines of this design still extant.
I think I've had that problem - but it's never bothered me. My bookmark takes me to the main forum page, and I have the posts sorted backwards. I have yet to have a problem getting in here.
Every now and then when I post I get a blank page back, but I'm done with this thread so just go back to the main forum, as I would for any thread.
As for the severe thunderstorm last night, some folks got a pretty good show, but here it was Pffffft! All of .03" of rain, some lightning and thunder.
Off to a meeting of antique fire truck enthusiasts.
CShaveRR Hey, if it helps diagnose the problem, I just made the previous post and the front door closed! Had to come in the back way to do this one.

Under a severe thunderbumper warning until 9. So far just some rain and thunder. We'll see if we get any wind.
Joe, I hope Matt had a great time and saw lots (despite being hampered by a class that probably had no interest at all in railroad hot spots). You'll have to bring him back on a Chicago field trip done right! Randy, good luck. Can't say much more without knowing particulars or your wishes.I had a surprise tour to lead around Lilacia Park today. In just two days we've had a lot of progress on the blooms. It was also a good day for trains going past. After guiding tours around the park, we took the first-ever historic walking tour of downtown Lombard. It was nice to have a lot of thoughts and ideas solidified by this tour, and find others' memories of what's been gone for a time.
Randy - go to Joe's and get a lawn chair and just direct train traffic. They have enough of it!
evening
Randy sorry to hear.Want to come to ohio?? Mother nature gave us some rain.Matt is on his way back from his field trip to Chicago.Due to get back about 10 pm.Just heard some thunder.Ns parked a cn-cn bc rail train in the siding.Word is they moved the train down to Swanton and tied it down again.Tomorrow going to help out Grandpa.Happy Mothers day to the mom's out there.
Randy: So sorry to hear that. Sending good wishes your way. If you decide not to stay in Maine, you know there are people in Texas (and even Nebraska) that can give you information on future employment.
Tree - Beware robins - they are very pushy.
Randy Stahl I dunno yet.. still kinda shocked. There are some advantages..

If it wasn't intentional, I can understand...
Got home yesterday and discovered a robin has taken a liking to the awning over the side door. Not sure I want a nest there, and mama might get a little protective if she has a brood. So the nesting material gets removed if she brings more.
But, I was planning on closing that area up anyhow, so there's no time like the present.

afternoon
well Ns has some cars ready to go in town.Good thing Matt paked shorts for his field trip to Chicago. Have errands to run tonight.Mother nature warmed us up.Mamma said I need to cook so I guess we are eating out.
I gave a tour of Lilacia Park to five garden-club-type ladies this morning. I said little, learned a little. Four trains went by during the 45 minutes or so we were in the park (two scoots, two stack). This was my first tour; they said I did well. I didn't do enough to do well.We were up near 80 degrees today, and that's supposed to happen for us again tomorrow. If there is no threat of bad weather, I'll bike over and continue my trackside cleanup project. I happened to walk on the side of the tracks opposite where I'd been working, and that was worse, much worse. That side has the cab stand, and I noticed again the "Flat Rate Cab" sitting there. I figure that means that they charge a higher fare when the tires are fully inflated...
Been sitting here in my 2nd floor office with the wonderful south window, watching a million dollars fall past my window!
Thunder, lightning, little wind and RAIN! We are still running so dry that even a teacup of water is welcome.
Northern Kansas has been sending us smoke from land burn off, but tonite they sent liquid. Kind of makes up for all the bad air.
95 degrees here (38 degress not much more than a week ago) and Driver wanted to go fishing. Lake was busy and he had to fish on the north side, casting into a 40 mph south wind. I sat in the car and hid behind the morning paper. Life is not only good, it is really funny, too!
Murphy--are you wandering about in your neighbors' yards?
We are having our May cold spell, with morning temperatures in the low forties; a lot of rain this morning, not much expected tomorrow, and another storm Friday. Katie had the air conditioning running Sunday--but not since then.
Johnny
busy getting Matt ready for his field trip to Chicago.Ns has a train in the siding and cars for the local to pick up.Better get some chores done.
Murphy Siding No, but I'm fairly certain that they've been hiding rakes in the tall grass.
