DeggestyHardness in your water? Where do you get your water!?
I have a well - municipal water is not something we'll see here in the foreseeable future, unless it is mandated or the water fairy suddenly presents us with the $10 Million + needed to build it.
Most folks balked at the $650 per year cost per household ($400+ debt service and ~$200+ for the actual water). Some may consider that cheap, but my water right now costs me only the electricity to pump it out of the well. Even if I had to replace my water heater annually (which I don't), it would be cheaper than the estimated annual bill.
Our bedrock here is limestone, and it's not very far down - they had to blast to put in a new 1000 gallon septic tank here a few years back. Installation of the sewer system at the time (we were totally on leach fields before that - now it's septic tanks discharging into a collection system). As a result, my water is very hard.
We did an experiment in a college chemistry class I took after we moved here - how hard is your water? Ours was off the scale. Let's just say that I keep "Lime-away" in the cupboard...

tree68 I don't think we're due for much, if any, snow from the latest "named" winter storm - it looks like it's staying south of us. On the other hand, we probably won't escape the cold. Ms Mook - part of your problem might be humidity - or the lack thereof. I go through a gallon of water every day in my humidifier, and that doesn't really keep up. The worst part of that is that I have to use distilled water. There is so much harness in my water that when I use it in the ultrasonic humidifier, I end up with a layer of fine dust throughout the house, and can even sense it as I breathe.

I am slowly improving from my last visit to the hospital--and Katie tells me that my urologist wants me to have more surgery.
We'll see.

Norm48327It never ceases to amaze me that people forget how to drive on snow every year.
Heck. They seem to forget how to drive in snow between snow storms....
mudchicken Stay away from Denver...It's demolition derby season on the freeway and there wasn't even that much snow. (100+ car pile-up in a concrete trench) Picked a good day to go to CRRM the long way around.

mudchickenThis old track guy just did a double take.
I know. You can tell it's been a brutal winter.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
zugmann Our storm that was predicted from 2-100" is now being downcasted closer to 1-3". Fine with me. Still was nice having ballast to walk on instead of snow.

Well, the computer got to 9 above, but Arthur was saying 20 (he's supposed to be in the shade), so we went out after dinner. Pat got out a couple of minutes ahead of me, and between the two of us we cleared all of our shovel-ready surfaces. The sun has been out, so most of our driveway is not only clear, but dry. Our sidewalk is shoveled, but the snow piles along it are still too tall to allow much sun to reach it. I took care of our patio after Pat went back in; it's to the north, so it will never dry off as well as the other surfaces.("Never", of course, being a relative term...temperatures above freezing might help, but we aren't expecting anything like that until much later in the week--Thursday at the soonest.)

It was done snowing here by dawn. Maybe an inch or three, tops. Still cold though - we won't see +20F today.
Off to new projects (or maybe an old one I need to finish).
Our snow has stopped falling for this episode. The news said that up to four inches fell overnight--a casual look outside suggests that if they visit us they could bump that number up a little. I'll be out with the shovel a little later, but right now my computer is showing 7 above.
Morning
snow has arrived. No need to go out in it. Will be shoveling soon. Niece and family made it safely to mickeyland in Florida.Told them to bring back the warmer weather.
stay safe

Deshler Ohio-crossroads of the B&O Matt eats your fries.YUM! Clinton st viaduct undefeated against too tall trucks!!!(voted to be called the "Clinton St. can opener").
Coldest night of the season. Skiff of snow. Neighbors at opposite corner of block decided to burn down their attached garage!
Had scanner on - Fire department had an inspector on the way before they even had the fire out. Driver said it was a garage that the owner built - over a period of about 2 years. Last I heard, they saved the house. Probably had to throw ice cubes at it!

Norm48327 Larry, Take a look at Intellicast radar loop. Looks like you'll be seeing snow by morning. It's tracking north of their projection.

Actually saw some flakes in the air (snow...) on my way back from town a little while ago.
No problem. Plenty of gas for the snow blower...
Mr Tree: Our humidity is 72% right now - and no snow or moisture. Temp is 2 above with -18 wc.
We also have very hard water, (that's why it tastes so good when it is really cold!)
Joe - I caught your nap as it went by. Came close to banging my cold nose on the desktop!
I have my space heater practically in my lap. It isn't even coming close to keeping up with the cold. -18 below wc and maybe snow, altho we haven't seen any yet. That's ok - it just adds insult to injury.
One thing about the cold air @ nite - you really hear the loaded trains going up a grade and south out of the city. And we don't have any whistles any more. Sounds like they are running up our driveway!
hi
warming up.spent the day at Hicksville hill.Dekalb County is getting ready to take the bridge out at road 75.Csx is a traffic jam. Mother nature is going to give us some snow, then a break then more snow according to the guessers. Need to do some chores. Might go to bed a little early tonight.Didn't get my afternoon nap.(hate it when that happens).
Just researched Tug Hill. Holy cow! I was complaining about our snow here. YIKES!
CShaveRRbringing the total for the season up to six feet or better.
Spoke to another of my cousins at the memorial today - he said the snow at his camp on Tug Hill is coming in at well over 250" so far this year...
edblysard Uhhh…it is going to be in the 70s tomorrow…. Could always use another ground pounder on my job!

Sounds good to me. When do we show up?
We're in a warm-up in Chicagoland...at 28, it's the warmest it's been all day, and probably as warm as it will be for the weekend. As usual, with the warmup will come precipitation...not the dire predictions of a few days ago, but we could still see up to six more inches of it--bringing the total for the season up to six feet or better. Is it all right if I give up winter for Lent this year?
Sun shiny all day today. And COLD. Fortunately, I didn't have any outdoor work to do.
The oldest brother of my late cousin arrived last night - straight into the teeth of some substantial lake effect. Reminded him of why he lives in Arizona now... Drove through the snow belt today - plenty of evidence of snow plowing and driveway clearing.
Passed through one little settlement on my way to Utica, where it appeared one farmer with a snowblower on his tractor was making his way down the road, clearing driveways as he went. Nice guy!
Not supposed to warm up much, but I've got plenty to do inside...
evening
ran errands and checked over Matt's homework.Ns had alot of empties to pick up at work. Not sure how CSX is doing tonight. Paper showed where a woman found a telephone pole. Not a good result. Guessers are still guessing on how much more snow we are to get.More chores here at home to do now.At least we got cookies and milk at the store. Ed we would come down and pound the ground with you but the traffic in Houston is losy.
We, up north, are still in the ice age.

A little snow on the grass here this morning; there should have been much more (I have not seen numbers yet) up at the ski resorts.
Everyone must be satisfied with the delivery of Trains this month; I have not seen any complaint. My April issue came two days ago.
No snow here this weekend Zug.
Come on down.....bring Norris with you...
zugmann Murphy Siding zugmann My first weekend off in about 4 months. What am I going to do with such an occurrence? Watch it snow? Sunday into monday, supposedly. Anywhere from a rain shower to a foot of snow. If I shifted trains like these guys predict weather....
