Not quite to the stage where people are holding on to every available surface on the outside of the train...yet.
However, around here it seems that a third of the people think that the US railroads should be nationalized to "fix up our decaying third world rail system so it doesn't crash and explode like in North Dakota".
Now we know rail transport in the US is third world ?

You bring up several comments and questions.
1. All the BNSF haulage trains appear to be 90% + stacked. The only singles are usually 20 ft and some international 40s not stacked which may mean they were too heavy to stack anything on top. That applies as well to the UP run through trains and most CSX ones.
2. That brings up the question can the cranes that load have a scale so operator know its weight and will not overload a well car section ?
3. For some reason we have one daily CSX stacker that never is 2 containers tall when the single is a U-max container. Except an occasional doubled international containers and some domestic.
4. Absolutely more and more TOFC thru here especially UPS and FED EX. But more and more smaller outfits OTR trailers as well
5. Do the loose trailers pay some kind of premium since the do take up more train length ?

Well, Another Monday in South Central Kansas!
Day dawned with 20/30 deg Temps and a light wind out of the East, that was pretty Cold! Predictions are for more cold and wind...
Traffic on the T-con seemed to be moving regularly overnight, Had a 'Horn Happy' come through about 4:30 AM .it was a Westbound Stack that was moving pretty good (a number of JBH Cans). Then there were a couple of mostly tanker trains ( Key Frghts?) seemed to be running more or less on the new "National, Oil Train Speed" limit(?)..
While out for our morning walk to the cemetery, there was a Stack train came through, funny thing was it was mostly single stacks ( one high in the well- cars, the unusual part was that it was mostly single (20ft TEU's). With only about a half dozen 40' Containers stacked on pairs of 20 footers.) Then about a dozen or so double stacks and then the rear was a repeat of the front half(?). and a pair of DPUs on the rear. This seems to be aboiut a couple of times a week thing. All the rest of the Stackers seem to be doubled out to about 90 to 100%. Had dinner with daughter and family at the mall next to the CSX Chicago Line in Syracuse tonight. On the way out I spotted a signal at a CP displaying approach, so I hung around for a bit to see what was coming through. Finally gave up, and right about the time I was too far out of position to see the line, heard a train crew talking to the DS, who cleared them through the CP. Darn it.
Worked a small train show today - not very good attendance, but we talked to a few people and got some literature out. A Lego train group has a layout in the building. Since daughter asked me if I'd seen my son's old Legos around the house (for my grandson) I was interested to find bags of "spare" Legos on sale by the group. I bought a couple one pound bags.
Whodathunk an almost 5 year old would be that excited? It was all we could do to keep him from opening the bags right there in the restaurant...

Medical field is so much more patient friendly than it was years ago. They made them get away from the gruff and starch!
Driver just took the garbage out and said he saw our resident hawk sitting on the fence with a small grocery basket in his claw.

A year and a half ago, when I spent some time in a skilled nursing facility, I was able to get wine with my supper. However, the University Hospital does not serve wine--perhaps the Legislature needs to give its permission.
I am home now, and I will be having a home health care nurse come every day for a while to dress the wound that was made in my backside. It is hoped that this last trip has taken care of that specific problem for a while. Just as I was leaving the nurse (I had him last month), who is really nice, told me, "Don't come back." All of the nurses, doctors, and Health Care Assistants were capable and courteous.

Hospitals here are serving much better food and a bit of wine, if you qualify. Doubt they would serve it to me if they knew I would have a fit of giggles and probably fall out of bed.

Do a bit of research on Canadian Bacon. It is nothing more than cured pork loin which, of itself, is relatively cheap. Once they cure it and give it a fancy name it becomes cost prohibitive. That's why they only serve super thin slices. Oh, hospital food was never meant to taste food. I have that on authority from a doctor friend.

Our newspaper's food section had pictures of an upcoming benefit that will combine bacon and dessert.
Now - I love bacon and everyone knows chocolate cake is on the top of the food pyramid, but only want them combined after the bacon goes in first and chocolate cake follows. Mix with milk.

Norm - as my shrinking brain recalls - we went thru about 11 years of drought not all that many years ago. I never felt that we ever went back to "normal". Normal was always snowy winters, rainy springs, hot summers and rainy falls. Now it is warm, dry, cold, dry, warm again, still dry. This is just the Lincoln area. Rest of state is all over the checker board!
Based on the lack of snow cover I see on Intellicast, Nebraska may be facing a rather dry spring.
I think this spring is going to be a real challenge for all of us. Might not hurt to either get some items together or check the ones you have for an emergency.

Went to the funeral today. Nice service (Catholic mass in the church the deceased attended - although it was closed for the season and they had to dig it out and fire up the heat). As the priest was wrapping things up, saying a few words about her over the casket, he paused, and right on cue the noon fire siren blew - as if Gloria (a longtime member of the FD Ladies Auxiliary) was having one last word...
Spent about five hours on the road in the process as well. Long day, so far.
I did hear CSX doing some switching in Utica, and saw a westbound stacker fly by while I was picking up a uniform shirt. Also saw evidence that MA&N had their Jordan Spreader out. Wish I'd seen it in action.
We were supposed to have a high near 50 today. I have no proof that it got anywhere above 37, the current temperature. However, our snow cover has receded a bit, thanks to the rain (including thundershowers) that came today. The drain I shoveled out yesterday is bubbling merrily.Our tour of duty at the museum today (all 5 hour and 40 minutes of it) was a little disappointing, train-wise. There were only 16 moves in that period of time, or right around three per hour. And considering that there are usually two scoots per hour, that isn't much traffic. One nice surprise was the last outbound freight I saw...six units on the point, including our SP Heritage unit.
The only foreign power I saw were a couple of CP units. The first was the second unit of two on a westbound manifest. It was steaming mightily from the radiator, thanks to the rain that was falling. I didn't note the number of the unit...perhaps I should have, as a CP unit also came eastbound as the second of two light engines. I doubt that it could have been the same pair.

I think Nebraska weather migrated. Sounds exactly like what we got around lunch time.
Weird day! Supposed to have 3 inches of snow, high wind, snow heavy and wet, real blizzard conditions.
Had snow - really big flakes that showed up only on roof tops. No wind. Very wet. Ended by noon and now almost 2pm & no trace of snow at all - anywhere.
38 and sunny! No breeze. Not a lot of moisture, but at least it was more rain than snow. Now that's a winter I can live with....
