Temotu may actually be Tuamotu, which is the archipelego (island group) where Tahiti is located?

I've been through there aboard ship, but we didn't stop.

Per Wikipedia, there are three Temotu's - Kiribati, Tuvalu, and the Solomon Islands.

Good afternoon and peace be with you. all 52 and sunny in Carolina this afternoon.

Big news locally is a double shooting with one dead. The west side of town is shut down while the hounds do their job.

For the nth time, a local teacher or school official has been gigged for having an affair with a student. I can hardly turn the news on without hearing of one, twice this weekend. What are these people thinking?

I have been putting in some time on the wireless for a change and having an interesting time. Recent contacts include Temotu and Ogasawara. Who can identify these places and find them on a map?

Everyone take care and have a great day.

Tom

Where we are back to the dull skies and ccold again ...high of 27F and low tonight of 19F...oh...and ice fog....yay...

It is cold, no doubt.  But after all this is the dead of winter when we have to expect cold.  I live in north Jersey.  I remember not all that many years ago walking to my morning train.  My path paralleled (but was a few feet away from) the track.  It was in the high teens with fires lit under the switches to keep them from freezing and I felt like stopping to warm my hands despite my heavy mittens.  I slogged along in the path that was worn in the snow, my feet freezing in my boots.  My timing was good; just as I was buying a cup of coffee I could see the train headlight and a few minutes more I was in my seat smelling wet wool and drinking it.  The morning paper said continuing cold.

But that was then.  This is now.  So far there has been almost no days below freezing.  Today the temperature was in the mid 30's.  Where I live global warming has arrived.  It's a lot less uncomfortable but it isn't really good.

Ms Mook - with the goldfinches having gone to their winter wardrobe, sometimes it's hard to tell what's stuck inside the feeder.  It's not like they stick around for a chat when I get them out.

Lately the trick for getting them out has been to dump more seed into the top-loading feeder.  The whole "roof" hinges up.  Once I get enough seed in, they're close enough to the top to make their way out.

I have to refill the danged thing anyhow.  The little monsters go through a couple of gallons of seed a day if I let them.  The worst are the Jays, who seem to be either awfully fussy, or exceedingly considerate, as they sweep food out of the feeder and onto the ground.  I figure they're just looking for exactly the right seeds to stuff into their gullets.

At least the seed on the ground attracts an audience.  Thejuncos, mourning doves and cardinals are usually ground feeders, along with most of the "dicky" birds.  And the occasional squirrel or three.

Musings -

General:  We have wall-to-wall sunshine and really slick spots in the shade.  33 right now.

Tree:  I worked with birds for a few years.  When sparrows were being made, they heard brains, thought they said trains and said they would take one later (old saw, but true)  But their mental deficiencies make them fun to handle.  If you were bonded with them a little, you could open your mouth and they would mimic you.  Great way to get food down them.

Adrian:  I go to my basement and all I get is dirty laundry.

Wow....so much difference in our morning here from Larry's NY site...Sky is totally blue, clear and plenty of sunshine.

Quentin - While many areas experience lake effect snows (officially "lake enhanced"), what we get off the east end of Lake Ontario tends to be extremely focused and defined.  I can have sunshine and blue skies here at the house, while 10-15 miles to the south they're experiencing whiteout conditions.  Drive another 30 miles (it'll be slow going) and you're back into the sunshine again.

Watch the weather radar for the area east of the lake - you'll see when those bands set up, and when they do in earnest, they'll be in for snow measured in feet, not inches.

Understand Larry, the Lake effect certainly can be meaningful in effecting local weather conditions....And some times it can be far reaching.  But not often here where I am.  We're 175 mi. {roughly}, from the lakes, and don't see Lake effect snow here very often but it can happen.  Have a niece in Meadville, Pa., south of the Erie area and they certainly know the effects of Lake {enhanced}, action on snow activity.

I must have missed the "muffled thump" of an inch or three of snow arriving overnight.  The scanner is quiet, though, so it apparently hasn't been a problem on the roads.

Gotta go rescue a sparrow from one of the bird feeders.  The little duffers have apparently found a way into the feeder (it'll hold about 3 gallons of sunflower seed) but haven't figured out how to get back out.  I'd love to be able to band one of them to see if it's the same bird every time...

Things to go, places to do...

Forecast has us in the possible snow showrers / flurries catigory this morning as well as last night, and we did get a half inch or so last evening, but  some snow has melted overnight, and it's now 35 degrees.  So maybe we've broken out of the deep freeze for a while, and we'll continue to see our snow melt away.  The new week is to be somewhat warmer.  Anyway, this morning we have dark overcast sky, but no rain or snow currently.

Glad of no snow overnight to make it slippery to go to church and then Sunday meal.

Good Evening...

Well, everything is ready for me to get those reports done...computer all put together and ready...4 boxes worth of surveys and account books at my disposal...et cetera....

Same up this way...sun all day while to the north of us..more dull gray clouds and snowflurries...depending on how the wind sets up across Lake Huron we could see sun or snow squalls...we saw a few of those set up a few days ago here...a couple of years ago London got buried under close to 6 feet of snow in a day ...

Nasty, nasty, nasty this morning, although you wouldn't know it here at the house, where it's merely cold and blustery.

"Up on top of the hill," in areas where the roads border large fields, the winds are running at 25 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH (actual measurements), causing drifting and poor visibility - blizzard conditions.

We were sent to one such area this morning for a car off the road.  After I got home from that, at least two other vehicles went off the road in the same area.

Good day to stay home...

Larry, am I remembering correctly the official weather service standard location for temp pick up is:  5 ft. off the ground surface.  For years my brother tended an official weather "station" on the property where our Esso Station was and I seem to remember that figure.....

That's about where the main sensor is located.  The anemometer also has a temp sensor and that's about 15 feet higher.  Usually the two are within a degree or two of each other, though.

One "problem" I have is that I'm near the bottom of a fairly narrow valley, so I'm shielded from the wind somewhat.  We can be getting 40 MPH winds up above and I'll only see 15-20 MPH on my station.

On the other hand, the cold air does settle, so it's often colder here at the house than in the surrounding evirons.

I think we've done Gatorade via IV - no reason we couldn't do coffee.

The upper sensor for my home weather station showed -19F overnight.  The lower sensor is much closer to the ground and only got down to about -10F.

Several projects today.  Better get to work.
