Yes, Mookie, this atmosphere arrives all too often in the winter, but we are having one of the longest stretches in which it is warmer up at the ski resorts than it is in the valley. It is not just the Salt Lake Valley that has this problem, but also Cache Valley (north of here), with Logan in it, is subject to high pressure holding the exhaust from everything down.

Today, for the first time since Christmas I felt it was warm enough for me to be able to really play Indian with the ice on my driveway and proceeded to chip away at it.

I knew someone who owned a private car and had it sitting in their backyard.

I once knew a guy who came upon a narrow gauge logging railroad that was no longer used.  He brought the tracks and an engine and set them up in his (large) back yard.  He built himself a very comfortable caboose and was working on a passenger coach.

There is a Big Boy in Omaha that - while it won't fit now, I could fit it if I cut down trees, remove the garage and that would give it a lot and 1/2 if I place it just right.  I want an old CBQ covered wagon, and an SD70 in Greenie colors.  Throw in a Nebraska Zephyr and I would be the happiest person in Lincoln.  For that I would probably have to take down the neighbors fence....

However, the landlord won't allow pets, so doubt he would be agreeable.  And I am trying to downsize.  However, it would give me the ability to put all the houshold items in any or all of them and have them taken to the parking lot of the "home".....

Mudchicken could help with the design of the layout.  Right, Sir C?

I knew someone who owned a private car and had it sitting in their backyard...along with some track. Don't think it is still there though...

Mookie, you must have quite a backyard--unless you would settle for an 0-4-0, perhaps without a tender. You are, indeed, asking for more than Rickie ever wished for; she merely wanted a sleeper (she never did specify the accommodations, but may have settled for any one with sections, since the first trip she had in a Pullman was in a lower--when night came, the seats became beds!). I had to tell her, sadly, than our backyard was not wide enough.

Mookie
For years I have been asking for a locomotive to put in my back yard

Mookie,

I think a locomotive in the back yard is a really good idea.  I'm sure the firebox would make an excellent barbecue and of course the tender is right there to store wood in.  And it has all kinds of crevices--it would be a fantastic planter.  And that it just the beginning.  With a few miles of track you could use it to run errands.

Sir C - I heard they had some really bad, bad accidents in the area you are talking about.  Cars and trucks don't mix well.  Then stick a cell phone in the mix - and I wish you a safe return trip!

Check your water dish - there is a note in it!  Captain

Mooks:

Blew thru Nebrasky yesterday  and didn't wanna interupt the cat's late morning nap. Dealing with Chicago turning into stupid zone after their first snow of winter. How mant times can they rebuild I-80 between Lincoln and Omaha or is that an orange barrel preserve? Sheesh!

Rough job towing the snow cloud this far east. Working close to MP173's backyard.

Yep - Massachusetts, West Springfield to be exact.  Amherst Model Railroad Club show at the Eastern States Expo - the "Big E."  Quite the event - the biggest on the east coast, I've been told.

We'll be visiting a friend with a magnificent layout in his basement tonight for an operating session.  This will be my third year, and I'm starting to get the hang of how to "play the game" on his layout.

Gotta make sure I've got everything packed, then it's time to hit the road.

Good Friday morning all.  Temps in the low to mid 20s, with a wintry mix affecting several parts of the area.  Jeff. Co. schools in KY open; here in Bullitt Co., reported earlier that schools on 2 hr. delay, no morning preschool; just got a phone call with an update:  due to the road conditions, school is cancelled.

Coffee & other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, and breakfast is on the warmer station.

Larry take care on your trip to Maryland, and everyone else have a good day, take care, keep safe and see you all later.

Still cold - just +4F at 11PM.

On the road to MA tomorrow.  Truck is mostly packed.

Got a tee-hee today.  Inspector from state labor department had to look over our banquet hall (a regular event).  During idle chatter it came out that I'm an engineer on our railroad.  The inspector (a lady) was, like, "they let you run those big trains?"  Sure!

Heck, somebody has to run them...

Time for bed.

The Salt Lake City airport was shut down for several hours this morning because of ice on the runways--about the tenth time since in the 1940's. It is not often that the area receives freezing rain, that did come this morning. At 4:30, one runway was still closed, and the airport had many delayed passengers inside. Now, if the UP (and its various predecessors) still ran as many passenger trains as it did in 1950....

We can at last look forward to several days in a row with highs above freezing; I think we had not reached the freezing point since Christmas Eve, and the lows were generally about 10 degrees or lower.

I am  still sorting books and packing those I will take with me when I move. I can let those who really need to know my new address since Katie and her daughter moved in last week.

Q - I am still watching the trains in Helmond, NL and find that they have cams in just about every corner of their country.  You can watch trains, traffic, construction, power plants and people.  Sometimes on dreary, long, cold days - it is nice to see that the world still goes on, even if you can't get out in it that day.

John:  99% of what I write is written tongue-in-cheek.  I think a lot of people think I just don't have all my puzzle pieces, but those that do "get it" - we have fun.

The Driver was reading over my shoulder (doing a good back scratch) when I was reading your reply and we both cracked up at your last sentence.  For years I have been asking for a locomotive to put in my back yard and figure there must be some poor soul out there that really thinks I am trying to accomplish this.

They are right!

Mookie,

I hope you realize the last sentence was written with my tongue in my cheek.  But I do have the stainless steel thermos.  Commuter trains have no place to get coffee and after waiting for the train in cold weather a cuppa jo is good.

A heat wave over here in central Indiana.  21 degrees right now.  9:15 pm.

May have a bit of snow passing thru tomorrow.  To be finished by noon or a bit after....We're to get 1 to 2".

Trivia:  Found a web site for streaming web cams all over the world....watched cars going over the big bridge in Austrailia a short time ago...oh, and a train too.  Noted it said it was 84 degrees currently.  Of course they are in the middle of Summer now.

Can watch the salvage operation {live} of the Costa Concordia over near Italy too....Also live cam overlooking Flight 93 site with windmills with blinking red lights in the background.....That's just about 7 mi. from my home.

John:  Wow!  I Bow to you, sir!  You must be a hard core coffee drinker.  I throw all my spare change in a piggy and figure I could now probably buy (if I add to it) maybe a nite at a local hotel?

Looking back, as much milk as I drink - I should have bought a cow.....I really could have gotten a left-over Big Boy!

Will need to move closer to some kind of coffee place, since my own coffee is horrible.  Either instant water or wow!  spit it out!

Many years ago when the coffee stand at work raised it price to 35¢ a couple I got mad as hell and decided I wasn't gonna take it any more.  I went out and brought myself a stainless steel thermos.   Every evening I set up my coffee machine and in the morning I filled my thermos.  And every time I drank a cup I put the difference between my actual cost (perhaps 7¢ a cup) and the cost of buying a cup into a piggy bank.  I took the money I've saved over the years and brought myself a private railroad car.

Down in Georgetown, KY, tonight, after spending two cold days in the cold an snow that is New York. Had fun in Fulton yesterday, was not bad going in loaded, but coming out empty was another story, took the long way to Rochester via Syracuse, I did not like the look of those roads.......

Tomorrow should be fun as well, they are predicting ice south of here, we may be a day late to the customer......

Had lunch out yesterday - and about 2 cups of coffee.  Then to local Starbucks and another medium latte.  Slept like a log all nite.  Not the usual aches and pains.  Guess I should stop the ibuprophen and drink lots more coffee.  Thumbs Up

Will need to move closer to some kind of coffee place, since my own coffee is horrible.  Either instant water or wow!  spit it out!

Hey Joe - they are bringing back the 2nd favorite Mookies - the SD60 - white face.  We haven't seen any for ever so long and now we might!

Meanwhile, we are still seeing coal heading east, but with some different markings.  I wonder if these were the ones that used to use the northern route and are now coming thru here on their way west.

Or not.  What do I know?  I just guess a lot!

A bit of a warm up.  It only got down to -3F overnight...

Ever the joker, the sun is once again shining brightly.

We were dispatched yesterday on automatic mutual aid for a smell of smoke in an apartment.  Turned out to be a furnace malfunction and we were cancelled.  But I've fought some fires in this kind of weather, and they are never fun.

The thing about those old mills and warehouses is that when they burn you can pour on all the water you like, but the fire will go out when it runs out of fuel.  Photos from the aftermath show the walls still standing and little else.

The fire went to five alarms, and had a third of Chicago's on-duty firefighters on the scene...

Sir C - also heard Omaha had a fire that looked very much like that one.  Seems like January is when Omaha tries to burn down old warehouses and decorate them in ice that lasts until spring.

Reach up and close that north window!  Grumpy

One heckuva building fire. Probably lit up BNSF Corwith Yard as well.
