Mookie

I couldn't get our thermostat to work last year.  Beat the daylights out of it before I figured out it had 2 AA batteries that were going bad.  Poor thermostat.....

And - I almost melted the answering machine before I figured out it needed 4 of them!

Now that's hilarious!

Had a cheeseburger for lunch.  Have to raid the 'fridge for leftovers...

Made a trip down to the railroad today to "receive" the pumpkins and bales for our Pumpkin Trains this weekend and next.  400 of those little beasts, tossed one at a time by the produce guy and placed carefully so as not go damage them.  Same with the 35 bales of straw.

Then I got back home and helped season 400 chicken halves for our BBQ on Sunday.

Oh, my achin' back.

Cleaned out the rental in anticipation of returning it tomorrow.  The body shop guy says my truck will be done by mid-day.  I can't wait.  Those little cars weren't made for guys like me.

Ms Mook - I just noticed that my old "Regulator" clock on the fireplace had quit.  The wind-up mechanism died several years ago so I replaced it with a battery unit.  It needed a new battery.  Smoke detector battery is due for replacement soon!

Good afternoon.

37° a cloudy now, with a bit of snow still on the ground. There is a bit of a windchill too. It was the first real snowfall of the season last night and the drivers didn't adapt well. There were a number of accidents, including a 20 player bumper car event on a icy bridge deck.

The Grizzly bear incident is still in the news. Now there is going to be some event at Mount Royal University where the purpose of the National Parks is going to be debated. Is it to promote tourism or preserve nature. At this point though, everyone is going to great lengths to not look like they are picking on the CPR.

.It's a telephone made to look like a model train steam engine...green...southern steamer about what would be 027 size.....I have never used it.  To use it, one simply picks it up holding it at the "boiler" area and half of it comes up to be a telephone....It is realistic appearing too

Just the other day I was thinking to myself that with all the little phones around now, the specialty shops you used to see in the malls with all sorts of different landline phones have disappeared. Back in the '70's in my first place I had a Candlestick phone. The phone company (remember when each area only had one?) had an offer on specialty models and I ordered it because it was like the very first phone I can ever remember seeing in the station. We didn't get dial phone service until I was 10. I can sure see why people wanted to get rid of those. It was a real pain to use and after 8 or 9 months I called the phone company back to take it out (remember when you had to do that?).

Think I will go with a burger for supper.

Yes, keeping fingers crossed does make it difficult to type, especially if you really have them crossed--little finger under ring finger, middle finger under forefinger, and forefinger over little finger--on both hands at the same time. I haven't figured out how to get the thumb into the crossup, but perhaps you can use it to type.

Quiet afternoon here in Louisville; been watching the Reds game, Joe.  So far, the Reds are still behind, 6 to 3, SF, and I believe they're in the 9th inning.  But I'm still keeping my fingers crossed, which makes it very difficult to type!

Here's our menu for the rest of the afternoon/evening:

1.  Sloppy joes w/fries and garden salad

2.  Burgers and cheeseburgers w/fries and garden salad

Cannonball, sounds like you and Shirl had an enjoyable anniversary.

Quentin, I need to pull up the Roanoke cam.  Haven't done that in awhile.

Everyone have a good evening, take care and see you all later.

Smile  CW , thanks for the aniv. greeting. We have been in the siding  off the main with the "kids" about the last 57 yrs. The great grand  kids are about the age  of  understanding of who we are. Sometime the time sure flys by us.   Biscuits and sausage  gravy sure sounds good on this dark and rainey day here in the mtns. Need more hot coffee for now.

Thanks for trying J......I've not seen any other answers.  I just doubt if it is fiber optics, from what I've seen so far....But who knows.

The removed, what was {I believe}, a former passenger train platform...concrete for some length, and have been working around that opening with the orange plastic fence around it....I'm wondering if that was part of the Passenger access to an inner track back when this area was used with for that purpose.  At least I think it was.

Just watched a front end loader pull up to the site, and a fellow jumped down from it, and then I turned the "page"...So didn't watch what he did....

White frost here early this morning.  37 on the instrument, and now bright sunshine and blue sky...Believe we're to see 60 today.

Trivia:  I was looking for some picture frames here at home yesterday in a built in unit at the end of the family room and spied something I forgot I had....It's a telephone made to look like a model train steam engine...green...southern steamer about what would be 027 size.....I have never used it.  To use it, one simply picks it up holding it at the "boiler" area and half of it comes up to be a telephone....It is realistic appearing too.  Used to see it advertised in TRAINS mag....Maybe it still is....Haven't noticed lately.  Anyway, just forgot I had it, as it kind of surprised me.....Thought it was a model steam engine at first glance, until I remembered just what it was.....

Good Thursday morning all.  38 degrees here in Louisville this morning, going for a high somewhere in the 60s this afternoon.  At least the winds have died down, so it doesn't feel too bad outside this morning.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the breakfast warmer bar this morning:

bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, toast, biscuits, gravy, hash brown taters, bagels and bear claws.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, and see you all this afternoon.

Tree - I got an early start on my battery changing today.  I made a list on puter of what needs to be changed and when it gets changed.  I have 13 items in this itty bitty place that need at least 1-2 batteries and one that needs 4.

Did about 5 of them - now must get a supply of batteries to finish the rest of them.

And our flu shots must wait until the 17th @ dr office.  I like them there cuz I don't have to do paper work.  They have volumes on us!

If you truly like Chinese, you should try good Vietnamese.  It is lighter and when done right, absolutely delicious.  Plus it is very healthy - but you might want to ignore that.

sorry to hear about the 2 little bear cubs.  I know they're wild creatures, but they sure are  really cute to look at, aren't they

CW, Grizzly bears go through their "cute" phase pretty quickly. Then they really bulk up. When the story finally broke about the bear kills, on Monday night, they showed some stock footage of what I presume were yearling cubs and they already looked like a force to be reckoned with.

30° and snowing here now. It is supposed to get back up to near 60° later in the week, so this snow won't be with us long.

I am running late, so Chinese food sound like a good idea for supper.

Got the lawn mowed before the rains came.  They only lasted a while, with the sun returning by late afternoon.

Got some errands run, too.  And worked on some of the props for the "Pumpkin Patch" for our railroad event this weekend.

Hopefully I'll have the truck back by mid-day Friday so I can head south and get the patch set up.  Besides, I'm too big for these little cars.

Haven't been watching the Roanoke cam, so can't comment....  Smile, Wink & Grin

Just signed up for my annual flu shot.  The county health department offers them to first responders as part of a mass immunization drill each year.  Apparently there's a couple of new strains of flu around this year.

Still watching over on the Roanoke cam and still in the "dark" as to what is being accomplished there....??

Q - I haven't been over there in a long time, but looked today and will hazard a guess that they are putting in fiber optics, probably for signaling?  They did a lot of that work around here for most of a year and it looked something like that.

May end up putting in a new switch in the area or even a spur if they have enough room.

Now maybe the pros will come out of the woodwork and prove me wrong.

Been doing more work around the house, trying to get things caught up, everything back where it goes, etc.:  continuing with the fall cleaning routine.

Current temp is in the mid to upper 50s; been sunshiny all day, but the  wind is really blowing, so really cool out, even in the sun.  Supposed to get down into the mid 30s tonight.

Tonight will be Chinese night here in the cafe:

Catching up on preparing the outside stuff for the cold seasons ahead....Wish it was blossom time we are looking at next...but it isn't.

Still mowing.  Grass has returned to beautiful deep green....Still a few spots to fill in, but so much has come back after our serious drought.

Good Wednesday morning all.  Starting out with temps in the low to mid 50s, and we may make it up to 60 this afternoon.  Then, tomorrow, high only in the 50s, after getting down into the low to mid 30s overnight tonight.  So freeze watches/warnings for tomorrow.

Barry, sorry to hear about your friend's wife.  Will be saying extra prayers for them, that she'll be all right, and return to good health.

Bruce, also sorry to hear about the 2 little bear cubs.  I know they're wild creatures, but they sure are  really cute to look at, aren't they.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go; breakfast is ready and on the breakfast bar.

Bruce - awww, I hate that when that happens.  We seem to have a few mountain lions throughout this eastern end of the state.  Problem is, they get too close to the cities and the solution seems to be to shoot them.

I don't approve, but then I am not in charge of wildlife.  But I have wondered if they would be attracted to peanuts/birdseed/corn....

Good afternoon.

It is not to bad of a day here. 57° and calm now. A sunny afternoon.

A bit of RR news. Two Grizzly bear cubs were killed by a CP train about six miles west of Banff at about 9 PM Friday night. These were the first two Grizzly bear kills of 2012 in the National Parks. Everyone is making the point that it was not caused by grain on the tracks. Parks Canada and CP are very sad about the incident but admit at this point they are at a loss as to what to do. One of the stories I missed commenting on over the summer was that CP, Parks Canada, and a number of other groups, are basically going to school on bear behaviour and trying to develop ways of keeping the animals safe. I started a thread on this issue several years ago and one of the posters then said that the only thing to do was send the bears to safety school and fit them with reflective safety vests.

Parks Canada has said that at this time there are about 350 mating bear pairs, but to stabilize the population they want to get that number up to around 1,000 pairs. The loss of these two yearling cubs is unfortunate.

Hey Mud - maybe a little trinket for da Boss - like (well, what would I like?) - a domestic goddess of my own, an elevator for those darn stairs, an end to nonsense phone calls on mah answering machine - let me know which one she will get....maybe I can borrow it.

Larry, that's what I need to do:  make a grocery run, probably sometime tomorrow.

The Produce truck showed up at 8:15 this morning; had only 1 helper, so they waited till a couple more people showed up, before they got out of the truck.  When we got it unloaded, we had:  cabbage, carrots, potatoes and caramel apples w/nuts.  Our selection seems to be getting smaller and smaller each week.

Our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta is now on the  warmer/serving station:

1.  Burritos:  beef, beef & bean, and beef enchilada style

2.  Tacos:  soft shelled and hard shell

3.  Spanish rice

4.  Chimichangas

5.  Fajitas

6.  Mesquite grilled steaks, pork chops and chicken

It doesn't feel too bad outside right now:  temps in the low to mid 60s, and the breeze has warmed up a bit.

You all have a good afternoon, take care and see you all later.
