Had a great time trackside this am. Of course, before we got there, they ran the "good" trains. We only saw coal, but that's ok. At least it was some trains!
Just can't seem to drag myself trackside before 8 am. And Millie isn't comfy enough to camp overnite. I bet if I threw a few fishing poles in her, the Driver would be ready at 5 am!

After a mostly cloudy day today, with some rain showers, it is now sunny and 66°.
There was an amazing turnaround in the weather last night. At 8:50 my time I had posted that it was so humid in my apartment I thought it would rain inside, and later at 12:45 AM I suddenly noticed that it was as dry as it ever is. The change was quite astounding. There must have been a wind shift after a front moved through, and the fresh dry air just vacuumed the moisture away.
Tonight marks the end of this year's Calgary Stampede, and things will return to normal around here. And speaking of normal, CP says they have almost fully recovered from the communications meltdown we suffered here earlier in the week.
I expect the IT industry across NA to rethink their backup procedures and policies after this event. This is going to ding many companies earnings in this quarter. And it also affected things like 911 service and internet based health care records. When doctors can't access patients lab results, people sit up and take notice. We haven't heard the last of this.

There are cracks in the ground in my yard. Nothing big enough to fall into, though. The weeds are growing just fine. The grass, not so much...
La Fest Francais is in the books for another year. No word on attendance, but the EMS business was relatively slow. More tripping on sidewalks than heat problems. The air temperature was 85F in the shade at parade time. The pavement in front of our EMS tent registered 129F...
Most of the bands had water (or is some cases, adult beverages) available during the parade, but a few ran short before the end, prompting this bike medic to hurriedly shuttle some bottles of H2O to some of the bands.
And to top it off, the fireworks were the best ever (the coordinator is a friend of mine, as is "Napoleon.")

Rain whats that heck I have had 1 inch of that stuff since MAY here in my spot of the Transcon. I had a Frog hop over to me with a sign going can I get a DRINK PLEASE I am thristy. City has banned any and ALL open Fires even Charcoal BBQ Pits are Banned right now. Yesterday I had Birds lined up on my Pool Ladder for Drinks along with every Dragon Fly using the Pool Noodles as Runways so They can get some Water along with the Butterflies. The Corn is going fail looked at an ear across the road yesterday in the morning maybe 20% of it pollinated the Beans I doubt will Pollinate if we do not get anyrain.
That tell you how DRY IT IS.

....This drought is serious stuff. And in a wide area in the midwest for sure. We're in for another really hot week. Hi 90's and I'm sure more 3 digit days probably.
Corn in these parts will be a disaster. A neighbor across the street has farms in his family circle....big ones, and he was telling me last evening as we sat out and took in the nice calm weather...Almost no kernels to maybe 20% on ears this season....Everything drying up.
Of course our moisture is going somewhere else.....England...Other parts of Europe.....Even down in our southeast...El Nina {sp?}, is involved again.
But the extremes seem to be more and more each season....
I sure hope my submersible pump can continue to be submerged in our water table....So far it has for 40 years....It is down 45 ft. in a 73 ft. deep well...
The golf course is still watering behind me, but they are pulling water out of a small creek that flows thru the property.
Beginning readout on our instrument earlier this morning was 76 when I first looked.....and of course, not counting any stray storms....that means hi 90's or 3 digit temps for this afternoon.

Afternoon all. Walt and I finally got back home a few minutes before 2 p.m. I immediately put on half a pot of coffee, so I could get something in me (although, after I woke up after the procedure, they brought me a Sierra Mist to drink). But after not having anything to drink since 10 p.m. last night, my mouth was really wanting some moisture. Everything is A-OK, don't have to go back for another one until ten years from now.
Supper tonight is on the slim side: just sloppy joes w/fries and garden salad.
And yes, it is really warm outside, not much of a breeze blowing, either. only periodically, and even the breeze is warm. Heard on the weather report last night, that the rain we did get the other day? 1 1/2 in. out at the airport's NWS office. Here at the house, we had just barely a 1/2 in. of rain.

66° and cloudy here today. The drought in the US is making news up here as well. Because of the importance of agriculture around here, the media give good coverage of that type of news no matter where it occurs.
Just read that Kitty Wells, "The Queen of Country Music" has passed away at 92. I really liked her. Being a teenager at the end of the sixties I didn't much about her, but once I saw the Loretta Lynn biopic "Coal Miner's Daughter", I looked into Kitty's career and liked what I heard.
Not surprising since I come from a long line of Country Music fans on Mom's side. She talks about listening to the "Grand 'Ole Opry" back in the thirties. And in the seventies my uncle hand built a wooden carrying case to hold his collection of Kitty Wells 8-track tapes, in individual slots. Better than any case K-Tel ever sold. The Tennessean already has a couple of good stories and a video up. Yes, I have The Tennessean bookmarked, like a Country Music fan should.

This afternoon i managed to get together with some friends at the restaurant near here for a coffee and didst discover that there was a small problem with a car beside me..door access is somewhat cramped when buddy parks car about 9" from mine....had to find driver and ask him...politely ...to move his car so I can access mine..got a big lecture from him on MY parking skills...find out after I left parking lot that he took my spot AND another to park....ooooch number 3....
Good Tuesday morning all. I think I might have caught on my sleep a little bit last night. Not sure I moved around much overnight. Temp is already in the low 80s, going up to about 96 degrees this afternoon, w/a heat index of 105. Going to be a scorcher, that's for sure, with only a 30% chance of popup showers/storms.
Bruce, thanks for the info on Kitty Wells. She was one of my favorite Country music female singers. I grew up listening to her on the radio, and any of the country music television programs. As a matter of fact, didn't she and her husband, have their own country music program back then, too? Gonna have to do some research.

.....It seems this extreme heat is very wide spread...even up to our northern neighbors.
Humidity is horrendous this morning, and earlier when I first checked the outside temp.....80 degrees...! That's bad news. That means under these circumstances, we'll see 100 or plus. In 40 years since we've built this house....I've never gone this long between times of mowing the lawn. Simply just brown dry grass now....Sure hope it can survive.
My temp is raised anyway these past few days trying to receive due insurance.......Very frustrating.
Everyone watch out in this heat.....This is dangerous stuff.

Hot? I guess it's hot! Woke up about 0430 to find the outdoor temperature was 75F. It's 1030 and my weather station is proclaiming 88. Fortunately, there's a decent breeze.
I'll be on the shores of the St Lawrence later today as Clayton dedicates the new pavilion in their riverfront park. It's styled to look like a railroad platform, and is, in fact, just a few yards from where the station was actually located.
In 1908 there were some 8 daily arrivals and 11 departures (including Pullman sleepers and parlor cars) from this stub-end station at the very end of the Utica & Black River line (NYC). All for a village of just 1000 people.
The station was on the rivershore in no small part because of the trade on the river. Steamers shuttled vacationers (and island owners) between the station and the large and small hotels that dotted the Thousand Islands.

At 2:12 p.m. our temp is 93, 94 degrees and feels like 100 outside. Humidity if 49%. Definitely feels better here in the house, with the AC going!
We actually had the Bread Truck show up this morning (when I was told by the Produce Driver last week, that there would be NO DELIVERIES of any kind this week). This time, we had enough pastries for everyone, and plenty of bread, even some 'white' bread, that was the sliced Italian bread.
I have our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta ready and on the warmer bar:
1. Tacos (soft and hard shells)
2. Taco salad
3. Burritos (beef, beef & bean, and beef enchilada style)
4. Chimichangas
5. Fajitas
6. Spanish rice
7. Cheesy quesadillas
8. Enchiladas
9. Grilled Snapper
Or, if you're not all that hungry and just have the munchies, there are tortilla chips with your choice of Picante sauce, salsa and con queso, or avacado salsa.

We were under a severe thunderstorm watch until just a little while ago. Little good it did us - barely a sprinkle here. St Lawrence County, on the other hand, got hammered, with thousands out of power and damage to buildings.
We didn't escape unscathed. Persistent winds caused several trees on wires issues. Just as my department was clearing one such call, we were dispatched to assist at a tractor fire turned barn fire turned field fire. I'm still not sure if a barn actually burned, but a lot of field did - estimates run to 50 acres, a sizeable area from our usual perspective. We normally get little stuff - less than an acre.
The 20 MPH+ winds were a major factor with the entire event, but especially with the field fire. Given our very dry conditions, higher winds would have really caused some problems.
Had a thin red line...{radar}, pass over us about 7:30 this evening, but it had no rain for us....Amazing. Right over us, and on east, and no rain.
Did take temp from 100 down to 90. More heat tomorrow, and possible {chance}, for rain on Thursday.....Terrible dry here....Now telling people not to throw cig. out car windows...People shoud know that....Everything is bone dry. Of course all kinds of water saving restrictions on....Crops going to ruin.
