.....Walt, that sounds correct as to where we saw the high water mark at the water co.

Item: The {one of them}, famous Johnstown, Pa. flood was in the Spring of 1936.  It was the one that caused the building of the great "river wall flood project".  The Army Corp. of Engineers came in and reconstructed about 15 mi. of river channel {deeper}, and slanted, large concrete river walls all along the channel as it passed by and thru the wide valley area of Johnstown.

It took until late Summer of 1977 before those walls were ever breached.....But they were....We had a chance to visit the area just a few weeks after that one happened, and one could still see the high water marks...That flood produced water in downtown of roughly 10 ft.

The worse one...The real famous one, occured in 1889.  Over 2,000 people perished in that one.  A dam had burst up stream about 14 mi. distant....There is even a flood museum there for that one.

Item...Trivia:  I'll look up that old TV set pic. and show it to you.

....A couple of things:  Walt, some years ago while approaching Louisville via boat...{from Madison}, we came upon some structures along the river at the edge of town and I remember I saw written, the data of the high water mark for the 1937 flood there in your town.

Commercials:  The one that I just have to mute when it comes on, as I'm so sick of it...."A fellow excitedly calling out "buy one and  get on absoutely free...Free...!" Selling clothing.  If it had run for a week or two, no problem, but it's been blasting now for months...!

Early TV:  Dad and I went together back in 1948 and purchased our first effort into Television.  The set was a floor model, 10" screen and the brand name of it was "Air King"....Believe it used the RCA chassis, as they had certain technologies tied up for, I believe it was 7 years.

Of course TV was very basic back then and I'm sure the costs were so much lower to produce a show.  Hence, minimum advertisements.

Item:  I recently found a picture of our TV of back then.  Actually it was of the 2nd set, as the first one had trouble soon after we purchased it.  It was the same brand, but a so called "table model", wood cabinet, and with the same size screen...10".  Eventually we purchased a "magnifier" that made the viewing screen larger....To about 17".  Of course it magnified the "snow" too.  Just some trivia.

Quentin, you probably saw the signs at the Old Water Tower here, right before the Big 4 Bridge.

It's amazing how much work was done on "flood protection" after the 1937 flood. Most of the rail/highway overpasses/ underpasses, floodwall, levee, etc. have a start date of 1937.(would be after Feb of that year.)

The high mark for flooding just past the "Falls of the Ohio" (McAlpine Lock & Dam, & old Pennsy railroad bridge)is around 55 feet, 1937 brought it about 10 foot higher than that.

Well, still raining here, a bit over 3" in our rain gauge--did look out the window and saw several ducks; they were wearing yellow rain slickers and holding signs that said "anywhere that's not raining" (apparently they were hitchhiking.Question)

Early TV was lots of fun to watch since it was "Live" & not videotaped; you got to see the actual mistakes, not some edited version. I forget what size the screen (tube) was on our first TV, but a bunch of years later I got an old B & W TV with a 7" picture tube that the entire TV was almost as big as our first set.

or do you spend more now to greatly enhance your revenue stream later.

That'll teach me to trust the mainstream media when it come to RR news. I was up at my Mom's place last night, and looked through her copy of the CPR staff magazine, which is sent to pensioners and their survivor's. I had made the above comment based on a story I saw in the Calgary Herald a while ago, where it used the word "contemplating" concerning certain capital expenditures. Then in the staff magazine, I saw pictures of tonka toys and men in hard hats at the same locations scraping and digging away. Obviously, they were well past the contemplation stage.Confused

Living in the city centre I hadn't realized just how much snow has fallen in the suburbs. 39° and partly cloudy now.

...And it's still raining here as well.  I've taken my rain gauge in a week ago as freezing temps we're upon us and didn't want it to break.  So I don't know how much rain we've had now since the weekend.

The White River thru Muncie is very high now and in some places it's working out on to the flood plane.  There are river walls thru here or the channel dug down that we don't see flooding {from the river}, in the main part of town.  There are some low areas though that will get a bit wet.

Sure glad the temp has remained high enough that this hasn't been snow.  That would have been bad for our annual avg.  snow fall figure.

Walt just came in from checking our rain gauge in the front flower bed:  3 inches of rain so far, and its still pouring down out there.  The wind is picking up, too, and it feels like the temp is beginning to drop.

I've been spending the morning rewriting our Christmas Card list:  after I get through here on the Internet, I'm going to go to our Word screen, and type out the list, then print it out.  So guess tomorrow is when I'll be starting to address the Christmas cards.

Since it is so rainy and cold, here is what I've come up with for our afternoon/evening meal:

Hope everyone is keeping dry, safe, and taking care this afternoon.  Enjoy your evening, and see you all later.

1.  Vegetable beef soup

2.  Beef stew

3.  Chili (mild, medium and 2 1/2 alarm)

All three served with your choice of saltines or oyster crackers, or cornbread.

Nearly finish putting up our X-Mas decorations this weekend but with the recent Snow/Cold weather I decided not to get the ladder out and do the gutter lights yet and risk falling.

Good Monday morning everyone.  Still raining, and temp seems to be holding at 52 degrees this morning.

As Walt mentioned, we have satellite here at home, and some of the commercials can be quite irritating.  Especially the Dairy Queen commercials.  You'll see the commercial, it will end, and here it comes again, a millisecond later!  Same dang commercial, too, not a different DQ commercial.  Used to like Dairy Queen, 39 years ago:  now, they couldn't pay me to eat.

Coffee, juices, hot cider (especially for mudchicken), hot chocolate and hot water for hot tea are ready to go.  On the warmer/serving bar this morning:  bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits, gravy, oatmeal, toast, bagels, bear claws.

Everyone have a good morning, keep dry, safe and take care.  See you all later.

Q - round up the ducks and send them to CW.....

On our way past the Utica Marsh on our first Polar Express trip tonight I noticed what appeared to be thousands of Canada Geese, probably stopped over for the night.  Pretty impressive.

Helped another 2000 folks or so enjoy the PE festivities this weekend.

On a trivia note - I was wondering out what kind of load I was pulling with the locomotive.  After I figured out that 370 people comes in somewhere between 30 and 35 tons, I quit figuring....

On the nasty and too many commericals we have to wade thru to see {any program}, now on TV....It certainly is discusting....Overbearing.

I can say, when TV was in it's infancy....decades ago....A half hour program started with one commercial....half way thru, another one, and of course another one at the end of the half hour....Now we get more than three commercials in 5 or 6 min. or less on most programs.

Yes.....Times have changed....so much so.

Quentin, I am sure you and a few others remember the practice that was followed in advertising on radio programs--the one that early television ftook up. Now, apparently the cost of producing a program is so high that it takes many sponsors to provide a single half-hour program. I saw very little television until the mid-sixties, but I would not be surprised if a program had only one sponsor or perhaps two sponsors, as this was the practice in radio broadcasting.

Another annoying practice: running the same commercial two or three times in an hour or so--and another one yet: continuing to run a silly advertisement, or one that says, "This is brand new!" for several months.

There is one particular commercial that we see which should have been dropped several months ago: the same woman complains about wanting to get her life back because she has to wear dentures; the sponsor is a dental service that provides implants. I did not see it for a while--and she was back last week; did she get implants and they fell out?Smile

Going back to football: all too often, when there is a "break in the action" in one game, I will want to see how another game is proceeding--and it also has a "break in the action."

Luckily we've not had that four letter word here yet! We have had some flurries, but most of the other(four letter word) has stayed north of the river. The weather guessers have said that with this rain we're having now, could make this year one of the wettest Louisville has seen for quite a few years.

Jen.....I won't need to go after the  ducks to send them to C W...It's all down stream from here.  And the amount of rain we've seen since yesterday, and the river rising and it will continue to do so....They will be washed down stream as it starts flowing rather rapidly.  Roughly, 145 mi. to go.

And not only ducks....We seem to have a large population of Canadian Geese here along our {White} River.

Sorry Jen....can't wait until midnight to catch our Pacer's play basketball.  The way the opposition has been going between the owner's and player's {union}, negotiations, it was appearing we'd not see them at all this season.  Of course now, it seems they will settle.  Players and owners can mix, I believe it's tomorrow.

But.....better or worse, we will start to see NBA games on Christmas Day.

On the nasty and too many commericals we have to wade thru to see {any program}, now on TV....It certainly is discusting....Overbearing.

Yes.....Times have changed....so much so.

And back to this rain.....It's good it's "warm"...Right now it's 50 degrees, and we'd have snow up to where we don't want it, if it was colder.  Believe it's to continue at least all thru the night, and some perhaps tomorrow.

Our river here was not too high yet, {early afternoon}, but with the rain continuing, it certainly will get that way....and the higher it gets, the faster it runs....

Wind has been blowing briskly all day, coming from the south, hence the 50 degrees......My My 2 Cents

Mook & Q, send the ducks if you want; it is downstream from Quentin to here. But if they float past our house, it means the Ohio (and other rivers) have exceeded the 1937 Flood as far as total rainfall goes. According to what little bit of history we know about our house, the Ohio only made it to about 6-8 blocks north of here, this particular area wasn't flooded in 1937 or since.

Still about 54 degrees here at this hour, supposed to stay close to that overnight, and drop off whenever that "front" moves through tomorrow.

For what its worth, we have satellite TV here, reasonable price, less than our local cable, not sure exactly how many channels of commercials we get, but most of time is worth watching.

(although some of the commercials are getting out of hand!)

Johnny - I am a news junkie (local, especially) and I never get local news at suppertime on any weekend.  Have to watch it just before bed.

Fortunately, I don't mind football and golf which seem to be the biggest offenders, but I am fussy about who and which team.  So sometimes I don't appreciate the run-overs.

I guess that is minor compared to my irritation at having 65 channels and nothing to watch, but paying a fairly high price to not watch it....

Almost a full moon, isn't it?  I can tell....Grumpy

Mookie, of course they have to have lots of advertisements so they can pay the networks pay the tremendous amounts they have obligated themselves to pay the schools and such. The extended breaks when the ball changes sides, between quarters, and especially at half-time do give the viewer a little time to do something else--but they certainly extend the time taken to show the end of the game--and a few weeks ago, BYU complained because the start of their game was not seen on television because the previous game ran a little long. Apparently the complainers had not been exposed to national television broadcasts of football except during the bowl season. On the other hand, since I watch games that are between teams in the upper ranks of excellence, I am used to games running beyond the stated time.

Bruce - I wish they would show curling.  I get awfully tired of football/commercials/football/lots of commercials.....

I am not sure why we haven't picked up on "other" sports - curling, more televised hockey, more of the winter Olympic sports - what a nice change.  For my part, they could lose basketball or show it @ midnite.  Played a little in high school, but still not a big fan of it.  I even miss bowling!  Geeked

Been a very rainy afternoon here in Louisville.  As a matter of fact, when I came out of the grocery store earlier, it was absolutely pouring!  I saw one young lady fall flat on her butt in the parking lot, going to their car.  Guess she wasn't hurt too badly, as she picked herself up, picked up her bags, and went on down the parking aisle.

Here is your Sunday Dinner menu options for this afternoon/evening:

1.  Beef noodle casserole w/garden salad, mashed taters w/beef gravy

2.  Grilled or fried chicken w/mashed taters, milk gravy, biscuits or cornbread, mixed vegetables and garden salad

Mookie, by the time this rain is over by mid morning Tuesday, the ducks from the Ohio River will probably be floating by the house anyway.  Stick out tongueAccording to what I heard on the news/weather last night, we are already almost 63 inches over our normal yearly precipitation amounts.  And at 5:18 p.m., we are already beginning to start to see it getting a little bit foggy outside, even with the rain still coming down.

Everyone have a good evening, take care, and see you all later.

Thought I would drop by for a rare Sunday afternoon visit. 17°F now. We had more snow last night, and now there is pretty much an even covering of snow everywhere. The last of the dry patches has been covered. Just in time for the first of several Christmas functions later this week that I will be attending.

Yesterday was the first day of the new TV season of Curling on TSN. Which explains why I wasn't back in for pizza last night. I heard an interesting thing a month or so ago about the differences in sports preferences between our two countries. Many of you here follow college football, and the TV networks there are almost willing to sell their mothers to get a chance to broadcast the games Yet, in Canada so few people are interested, the college football league has to pay a TV network to carry their championship game, just like it was an infomercial or a televangelist program.

In the US the majority of the population had never heard of Curling until the advent of Satellite TV. During the Canadian Men's and Women's Championships, TSN can make money showing THREE 3-3½ hour games a day for seven day stretches. With so many similarities between us I was surprised at how different our sports tastes were.

Been an interesting week for RR news. There have been a number of different items on this site as well as on other sites and forums, that while not significant in themselves, might prove to be really something in the future. With or without the activist hedge fund's new position in the CPR, I think in six months time things will be different there. Do you improve things (operating ratio) by concentrating on reducing costs at almost any cost, or do you spend more now to greatly enhance your revenue stream later. A common enough question for many businesses, but it seems the railway has painted itself into a corner where the answers have to start coming soon and fast.

It goes without saying I am more than a little curious to see how this story ends.

Everyone have a good day.

Bruce

Good Sunday morning everyone.  Hope everyone had a good night.  Temp is in the low 50s this morning, think I saw a reading of 54 degrees, on the puter's homepage.  Local news/weather not on yet.

Coffee, juices and other beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Cinnamon rolls, bacon, sausage & egg biscuits are also ready to roll this morning.

Everyone have a good morning, take care going to Church, work, Christmas shopping, or rail fanning, and see you all later this afternoon.

I just saw another interesting football game--LSU and Georgia playing for the Conference title. Somewhat like last week, LSU was a little slow in unleashing the powerhouse, letting Georgia score ten points before getting on the scoreboard. Then LSU scored forty-two points and kept Georgia from scoring again. I'm not sure what the Dawgs left in Atlanta--collars?

Tom, how will it feel if the Southeastern Conference comes out on top for five or six years in a row? I trust Mark Richt will be a better sport than that man who was supposedly coaching the Clemson team last week.

A note about 1862 or thereabouts: my maternal grandfather's oldest brother was a cadet at the Citadel, and went into the army early--and died in camp of typhus.

We did get some snow last night (less than an inch out here), and the streets were a little slick early this morning.

Don't know if we made it up to 60 degrees today or not.  I was chilly the whole time we were out shopping today.  We were gone from 9:40 a.m. until 2:40 p.m.:  the bus broke down, somewhere along the way, to pick us up to come home, so we had to wait for them to send another bus out.   We didn't find all that we were looking for, to finish our Christmas shopping.  So Monday morning, I'll be going online to find/order what we could not find today.

Rain is supposed to be in later tonight, or early tomorrow, and will be continuing until Tuesday.  There is a Flood Watch out already for about half the Commonwealth of Ky.

Here is our Saturday Night Pizza Fest menu:

1.    Anchovie

2.    Canadian bacon

3.    Cheese

4.    Chicago style

5.    Goetta

6.    Ham & green pepper

7.    Hawaiian

8.    Italian sausage

9.    Pepperoni/mushroom

10.  Supreme

Think I will try a slice of the ham & green pepper tonight, along with a slice of supreme.  (All I've had today is a bowl of cereal at 6:30 this morning, and around 5 p.m., a few cheese puffs.)  That is unusual for me, belieeeeve me.

Anyhoo, everyone have a good evening, take care and see you all in the morning.
